Upon signing for the club, Owen said: “I’m buzzing to sign and join this big club, can’t wait to play in front of the fans at Gigg Lane and help the team as much as possible. Jimmy Nicholson 1943 – 2025
Everyone at the club was saddened to hear of the passing of another of our former players. Silky midfield general Jimmy Nicholson has sadly passed away at the age of 82. Jimmy was one of rookie manager Bobby Smith’s first signings in December 1973 and he knew that he could trust him, having been a team-mate at Manchester United. Jimmy played 25 games as Smith guided the Shakers to promotion in 1973/1974 season and was also a creative mainstay in midfield at Gigg Lane for the following two seasons. In all, Jimmy played 95 league and cup games for the Shakers before moving on to Mossley, and later, Stalybridge Celtic. Jimmy’s glittering career began with 58 games at Manchester United before moving on to Huddersfield Town in December 1964, where he spent ten successful seasons, winning promotion to the top flight in 1969/70. He also amassed 41 Northern Ireland caps. Our thoughts are with Jimmy’s family and friends at this sad time. View the full article

Match Info: Chasetown (H), Sat 11th Oct, 3:00pm KO
It’s a mouth-watering prospect as the Shakers welcome league leaders Chasetown to Gigg Lane. Our hopes are high after four successive league victories, but the story of the Scholars season so far shows it will be tough. They had a poor start, winning only one and drawing two of their first four games. But they then won five in a row and conceded only one goal in the process. And their victims included then leaders Lower Breck. Our aim will be to break that sequence, and we go into the game fresh from our convincing win at Trafford on Tuesday. Yes, our only goal was Kieran Glynn’s penalty. But that by no means reflected our dominance. We’re now fourth in the league with 17 points from eight games – only three behind Chasetown, and with a game in hand. This is by far the biggest challenge of our season so far, so please get down to Gigg Lane and make sure you’re in good voice to make plenty of noise. Up, up, up the Shakers!! In Opposition – Chasetown The Staffordshire club started life in 1954 as a secondary school old boys’ team – hence their nickname, the Scholars. They were fourth in last season’s final league table, but lost on penalties in a play-off semi-final against Congleton Town. That achievement reflected the progress the club has made. They enjoyed a brief spell in the Northern Premier League, and have also chalked up some brilliant performances in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. On the Day & In the Ground Our Matchday @ Gigg guide is available to read to find out everything you need to know going on in and around the ground. Tickets are still on sale via our ticketing page on our website. Pay on the gate will also be available. Starkies will be open at the normal time of 12.30pm for supporters to access from the Manchester Road End entrance before kick-off. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis up to capacity, which will be managed on the door. Starkies will remain open throughout the game (for those in the main stand only) as well as after the game. Matchday Media Coverage If you are unable to make it to the action at Gigg Lane, we’ll have all the live coverage across our media platforms. Live Stream: This fixture will be live streamed around the world, as it falls outside the UEFA blocked hours. Click here to purchase your ticket from 5pm on Friday. Season Ticket Holders receive FREE access as part of their purchase, by entering their 5-letter reference code from their ticket into the Promo Code box. Once entered and the discount applied, follow the steps to purchase as usual. This code will only work once per game. Keep up-to-date with all our video content via the club’s YouTube Channel. Angels United: A Club Built from Heartbreak, Hope and Healing
A club you wish you werent a part of…. For our upcoming fixture, we’re proud to welcome Angels United as our match sponsor — an incredible charity using the power of football to bring comfort, connection, and hope to those who have experienced unimaginable loss. Angels United isn’t just a football team — it’s a family. A safe space. A community where grief is understood without words, where memories are honoured, and where healing happens through shared stories, open arms, and sometimes just a simple nod across a pitch. About Angels United Angels United was founded in 2020 by 13 dads brought together through heartbreak — all of whom had experienced the loss of a child. From that shared pain, something truly powerful was created: a football club built on support, understanding, and togetherness. What began as a small group has grown into a registered charity, providing emotional and practical support for bereaved families both on and off the pitch. Through football, they’ve built a space where people can come together to remember, to talk, and to find light in the darkest moments. Tuesday Night Support Sessions Every Tuesday evening, Angels United host free football-based support sessions. These aren’t about ability or competition — they’re about connection. Whether you want to play, watch, or simply be in the company of others who understand, you’ll always be welcome. It’s a chance to talk, listen, or just share space with people who truly get it. Global Wave of Light Each October, during Baby Loss Awareness Week, Angels United join families around the world in the Global Wave of Light. On 15th October at 7pm, candles are lit worldwide to remember every baby taken too soon. We encourage our supporters to join in this moment of reflection — light a candle, take a quiet moment, and share your photos by tagging @angelsunitedfc on social media. Together, these lights shine brightly in memory of every angel gone too soon. This year, Angels United will also take to the pitch on 12th October at Stalybridge Celtic (kick-off 11am) for a special fixture against Honeysuckle FC, another team made up of bereaved dads. Entry is free, and all are welcome to attend. There will be a minute’s silence before kick-off to remember all the babies and children represented by the names on their shirts. How You Can Help As a charity, Angels United rely on community support to continue their vital work. Every donation, fundraiser, and shared story helps them to keep providing these free sessions, events, and a lifeline for grieving families.~ ~If you’d like to get involved — whether by fundraising, attending a match, or simply spreading the word — your support truly makes a difference. Find Out More If you’ve experienced loss and are looking for a place to belong — or if you simply want to support Angels United’s mission — they’d love to hear from you. Socials: @AngelsUnitedFC Email: info@angelsunitedfc.co.uk Website: www.angelsunitedfc.co.uk At Bury FC, we’re honoured to stand alongside Angels United as they continue to use football as a force for good — reminding us all that, even in loss, we are never alone. Match Info: Trafford (A), Tue 7th Oct, 7:45pm KO
It’s been a tough start to the season with both injuries and fixtures piling up and Saturday’s FA Trophy tie gave an opportunity for rest and recovery for many of our senior squad whilst giving an opportunity for our under 21’s to test their metal against strong opposition. The scoreline did not reflect the enormous amount of effort and heart put in by the young shakers side – who had an average age around 18 – and we thank them and everyone who travelled to Runcorn to get behind them on Saturday. Just 24 hours later the under 21s went on to play their county cup tie coming away 11-1 winners! Looking back at the NPL West league table, we remain well in touch with the league leaders sitting in seventh place with 14 points from seven games. Our opponents for this match are currently towards the bottom of the league with just four points from 10 games. So here’s looking to pick up more points at the Flixton side’s Shawe View ground. We look forward to seeing as many Shakers as possible at Trafford and as always…. Be loud, be proud! In Opposition – Trafford Trafford have spent most of their 35-year existence playing at the upper end of the north-west non-league structure and ended the 2024-25 season in a commendable ninth place in the NPLW table. They’ve struggled this time round, but their season took a turn for the better last Tuesday with their first point for a 1-1 draw at Witton Albion, followed by a 4-1 home win against Sporting Khasala on Saturday. Two of Saturday’s goals came from new centre-forward Tom Lawrence, who went on as a sub in the 33rd minute. Lawrence was previously with Chester but was released at the end of last season. Admission & TicketsThis fixture is ALL TICKET. Tickets will be on sale up until kick-off. Click here to purchase tickets. Travel & ParkingAddress: Away Day Care Shawe View, Shawe Road, Urmston, M41 5DL Public Transport: Train – Shawe View is 300 meters from Chassen Road train station with trains direct from Manchester. Buses – 248, 253 and 255 all stop within a short walking distance from the ground. 245, 247 and 256 all stop at Trafford General Hospital, which is a short 8-minute walk from the ground. SatNav Postcode: Parking Facilities: Supporters who have no option but to travel by car are advised that the car park on Pennybridge Lane is likely to be full by 19:00. Supporters should attempt to park away from the ground and walk a short distance to the match. This will ease congestion around the ground and make it easier for supporters to get away after the game. There is likely to be some parking on Bowfell Road and Moorside Road both of which are a short walk from the ground. We would ask all visitors to respect our local neighbours and not to park across driveways or restrict access to residential properties. Roadworks: There are currently roadworks taking place outside the Bird I’ th’ Hand pub on Flixton Road. The roadworks are traffic light controlled and are causing delays to traffic. Supporters are asked to avoid Flixton Road and park away from the ground. Match Coverage & Live StreamIf you are unable to make the game, we’ll have all the live coverage across our media platforms. Live Stream: For this game, we will have no live stream. Keep up-to-date with all our video content via the club’s YouTube Channel. PSA Test Day @ Bury Football Club
We are hosting a PSA Test Day in association with the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal on Saturday 22nd November. The Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal (BKPCA) was set up by Barry Kilby, ex-Chairman, of Burnley Football Club in 2014. Barry was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2011 after having no symptoms and he considers himself lucky to be alive. As a result of this, Barry is determined to help as many men as possible from being put in the same position as he was. There is no National Screening for Prostate Cancer and most men are reluctant to visit their doctor for testing. Initially, Barry found a way of reaching out to Burnley FC fans on match days, encouraging as many men as possible to come and have a simple blood test at the football ground to check their PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) score. So far, BKPCA have tested over 13000 men. Of those, 1200 men have had Red or Amber results and have been referred on to their GP for further testing. This is 1000 men that could potentially have Prostate Cancer and some, at such a young age, wouldn’t have been offered a test by their GP. Pre-booking is required for this event, which will run between 10am & 2pm in Starkies. Click here to book and find out further information. View the full article

Match Info: Runcorn Linnets (A), Sat 4th Oct, 3pm KO
After our stunning fightback against Stafford Rangers, we travel to Runcorn Linnets for a replay of the game which had to be abandoned at half-time with the score at 1-1. Our last-gasp league victory at the weekend was the third in succession and took us to third place in the table, with 14 points from seven matches. It really was a great squad performance, with two of our three goals coming from Gabriel Johnson and Rustam Stepans just minutes after they’d come on as substitutes. That performance suggests we’re now hitting the kind of form which will keep us in the top five. If we win at Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday night, we’ll face NPL side Morpeth Town at home in the third qualifying round on Tuesday instead of Trafford in the league. In Opposition – Runcorn Linnets Runcorn are one of the strongest teams in the NPLW and, like us, have high hopes of promotion. They’re currently 11th in the table, but have played only six games. Their only defeat this season was at Gigg Lane three weeks ago, when we dominated but managed to score only a single goal. All the more reason to get along to the Apec Taxis Stadium and cheer on the lads. Admission & TicketsThis fixture is ALL TICKET. No tickets will be available on the day. Any tickets already purchased for Tuesday’s tie will be valid for Saturday. Tickets from the original game are not valid. Click here to purchase tickets, priced at £6 – adults, £4 – concessions (65+, 19-22 and disabled) and £1 – 18s and under. Tickets will remain on sale until noon on matchday. Admission to the stadium are much the same as the original tie, Shakers fans will enter via Turnstile 2. Although supporters will again be accommodated on the opposite side of the ground to the main stand, a section of seating will be reserved for anybody from Bury unable to stand and requiring a seat. Please email Runcorn for refunds on tickets bought for Tuesday or with any other queries. Travel & ParkingAddress: Stockham Lane, Halton, Runcorn WA7 6GJ Public Transport: Runcorn is served by two railway stations, Runcorn (Liverpool Lime Street to London line, also with services from Chester and Birmingham) and Runcorn East (trains to and from Manchester, Chester and North Wales). Both stations are served by buses running close to the stadium, although Runcorn High Street bus station (10-minute walk) offers a wider choice for passengers using Runcorn Railway Station. SatNav Postcode: WA7 6GJ Parking Facilities: There is a large free car park on site. ROY PARNELL – 1943-2025
Bury Football Club sends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Roy Parnell, who passed away on 10th September, aged 81. Roy began his career as a youth player with Everton, signed professional forms on his seventeenth birthday and made his Toffees debut before turning eighteen. In three years as a professional he appeared in three games for Everton, all being away games. Everton manager Harry Catterick eventually allowed Roy to move on and in August 1964 he signed for his hometown club, Tranmere Rovers, who were managed by former Shakers boss Dave Russell at the time. The full-back went on to play 116 games for Rovers over the next three seasons but in February 1967, Bury boss Les Shannon paid £5,500 to bring Roy to Gigg Lane. Shannon had also been Parnell’s youth coach at Everton and knew the England Youth player well. Roy gave great service to the Shakers for three seasons and missed just two games as Bury gained promotion to tier two in 1967/8. In total he played 116 league and cup games for the Shakers before being given a free transfer in May 1970, when he moved on a semi-pro basis to New Brighton as player-manager and in 1973 was playing for Wirral team, Newton. Match Info: Stafford Rangers (H), Sat 27th Aug, 3:00pm KO
It’s never a dull week of footballing action when the Shakers are concerned. After having to replay our previous FA Trophy tie due to player ineligibility, we now face a re-arranged fixture against Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday night. More details to follow on that one, but first, we face off against Stafford Rangers in the league. The 45 minutes against Runcorn last weekend gave Oscar Threlkeld & Reece Kendall their Shakers debuts, Reece for the second time, also Gavin Massey’s first Shakers start and a welcome return for Aaron Chalmers from injury. Stafford Rangers will head to Gigg Lane to face the Shakers for the first time, but they have conceded seven goals across their last two visits when they played FC United of Manchester twice across 2013 & 2014. Words from the GafferAs we didn’t have a post-match interview following the Runcorn fixture, Dave McNabb has shared these short thoughts ahead of the weekend: “I thought the first half performance was good on Saturday and felt we had the majority of the play once things settled down after conceding early. “Never nice for a game to be abandoned but realistically the referee had no choice with the amount of standing water and more rain planned. “We now have a mega busy schedule two two-week games for the foreseeable future with potentially more to follow. We are also battling a growing injury list with 9 players unavailable last Saturday, and Bobby picking up a knock during the game itself. We may now consider utilising some of the excellent Under-21’s players in the replayed FA Trophy game. This could be a brilliant opportunity for the young lads to showcase their abilities on a big stage as well as showing the club’s commitment to building a pathway to the first team.” In Opposition – Stafford Rangers Despite extensive research, no one has been able to prove when Stafford Rangers was formed, as early minute books were destroyed during the First World War. Rangers’ formation year is recognised as 1876 because of articles in the local Advertiser newspaper, but an alternative theory on Rangers’ formation date, printed in the Sentinel newspaper during 1891, suggests that the club was founded by a Bible class in 1877. The club has peaked at 6th in the National League on two occasions, or at that time named the Conference, in the late 1980s / early 1990s. It’s their second consecutive season at Step 4, having only spent four seasons out of the last 15 at this level, having been at the NPL Premier and Conference North levels in recent years. On the Day & In the GroundOur Matchday @ Gigg guide is available to read to find out everything you need to know going on in and around the ground. Greater Manchester Bee Network Journey Planner is available HERE Travelling by car Supporters who have no option but to travel by car are advised that the car park on Pennybridge Lane is likely to be full by 19:00. Supporters should attempt to park away from the ground and walk a short distance to the match. This will ease congestion around the ground and make it easier for supporters to get away after the game. There is parking on Bowfell Road and Moorside Road both of which are a short walk from the ground. We would ask all visitors to respect our local neighbours and not to park across driveways or restrict access to residential properties. Roadworks There are currently roadworks taking place outside the Bird I’ th’ Hand pub on Flixton Road. These roadworks are traffic light-controlled and are causing delays to traffic. Supporters are asked to avoid Flixton Road and park away from the ground. View the full article

Match Info: Runcorn Linnets (A), Sat 20th Sept, 3pm KO
It all looked very straightforward. After winning three out of four successive home games, we had a week to prepare for this away cup-tie. Then came the shock of having just 24 hours notice to replay the previous tie against Wythenshawe Town on Tuesday evening. Despite being unable to field our strongest team, we won again. We now focus on the weekend, the tie at Runcorn goes ahead, and we go into it with confidence on the back of a series of excellent performances. We beat the Linnets in our recent NPLW game at home. The score was only 1-0, but there really was only one team in it. The return fixture in the cup will be tough, because they have a point to prove. But so do we. More than one. Up the Shakers!!! The Rebel Reds won 2-0. Admission & TicketsThis fixture is ALL TICKET. No tickets will be available on the day. 420 tickets have been allocated to the Shakers for this game so far. Incoming: Oscar Threlkeld
Bury Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of Oscar Threlkeld. The 31-year-old arrives at Gigg Lane with a wealth of experience across the Football League and National League, having represented clubs including Bolton Wanderers, Plymouth Argyle, Salford City, Bradford City, and most recently Torquay United, where he captained the side. A Radcliffe-born player, he brings not only leadership and experience but also a strong local connection as he returns to his hometown roots. The Media team caught up with Dave McNabb who had the following to say about his new signing. He’s made two appearances against the Shakers during his time in the EFL, once for Bolton and once for Plymouth – both times he was on the winning side.
