We, as a club, understand what Morecambe fans have been going through. When it happened to us, we each processed the situation differently, but ultimately it had a huge impact on us both emotionally and as a club. Thankfully, we are now in a much stronger place, and we’re delighted to see that Morecambe’s struggles have been eased with the takeover by their new owners, Panjab Warriors.
In 2019, after Bury FC’s expulsion, we received a great deal of support and advice from across the football community. Sadly, despite lessons supposedly being learned, clubs continue to suffer uncertainty and turmoil. That’s why seeing Morecambe’s future secured is something we’re proud to have played a small part in supporting.
Ahead of our game against Newcastle Town, a suggestion was made to offer financial help to Morecambe fans. This quickly developed into an invitation for them to attend the game, a flag display, and organised meetings. A collection was arranged with a call for volunteers, and within the hour we had a full team ready to go. On the day, Morecambe supporters, Christie the Cat, and Peeler all took part. Counting took place throughout the afternoon, resulting in an incredible total of £1,852, which has since been transferred to the Shrimps Trust bank account.
On behalf of the Bury FC volunteers, a special mention must go to Steve Sedman of Redfox and Paul French for their commitment to the collection, even though it meant missing much of the game. Thanks also to Alistair and Collette from the Shrimps Trust, along with Christie the Cat and Peeler, for taking part in the Pound for the Ground half-time draw.
If anyone would like to contribute further, donations can still be made via: https://shrimpstrust.co.uk/donate/
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated at the game – your generosity was deeply appreciated. Now, with new ownership in place, we wish Morecambe and their fans the very best as they move forward into a brighter future.
