After seven successive away games, we look forward to a performance of high-calibre against visitors Irlam following a high-scoring start to the season.

And fans will be hoping manager Dave McNabb’s line-up includes 19-year-old winger Alex Cherera, who scored a stunning hat-trick in the FA Cup last weekend.

The goals played a big part in Bury’s 4-2 extra preliminary round victory at Congleton, which followed a crushing 5-1 league win at Padiham four days earlier.

These successes made up for the dramatic but equally disappointing 4-4 draw at sunny Squires Gate, which kicked off our season in the NWCFL Premier Division two weekends ago.

Now – after a total of seven successive away games – the team at last gets to play on that shiny new surface which has so expertly been constructed since the grass Gigg Lane pitch was ripped up in May. Come on you Shakers!!!

Following Saturday’s cup win against Congleton, we caught up with Dave McNabb & Alex Cherera – you can see those interviews below alongside match highlights.

    In Opposition – Irlam FC

Irlam FC are a good side who had a major problem with consistency last season, finishing in 13th place in the NWCPL table. In a way, however, they were consistent – 15 matches won, 15 drawn and 15 lost.

On their day Irlam can beat any team in the league. But so far this term they’ve played three and lost three, scoring only twice and conceding eight times.

In the corresponding match last season, Irlam lost 3-0, but they won 1-0 at the RG3 Digital Stadium in March as the Shakers hit a rocky patch. Declan Daniels, one of Bury’s scorers in the Gigg Lane game, is now on Irlam’s books.

The club started life as a works team. It traces is history back to 1935, entered the national league system in 2008/09, and is rooted firmly in the Irlam community.  Head here for Irlam history.
