We’re off! Two wins in a row and the vast improvement in performance under the Gigg Lane lights on Tuesday suggest we’re finally on the move.
The NPLW win against Runcorn Linnets was much more convincing than the 1-0 scoreline suggests. And we’ve gone from 18th to 8th in the table.
Also encouraging was the attendance – not far short of 3,000 on an initially damp Tuesday evening. And so was the noise from the South Stand. Come on the Shakers?? You bet!!
We were well on top for about 80 per cent of the game, and it was a pity we managed only one goal. We now go into our next clash with second-placed Shifnal full of confidence: our season is finally under way.
Confidence, yes, but not complacency. It will be tough, because Shifnal – like us, just promoted – have made an excellent start. And another win will keep us in touch with the pack leading the league.
So get down to Gigg Lane and get behind the lads again with lots of noise. Up, up, up the Shakers!!
In Opposition – Shifnal Town
The Shropshire side were promoted via the Midland League play-offs. They were runners-up to Lichfield City, then beat Brocton and Northwich 1874.
They reached second place in the NPLW by gathering 13 points from seven matches – four wins, one draw and two defeats.
Founded as a church team in 1964, they’ve played in various leagues in the Midlands and have been known as Shifnal Town since 1972.
