Melhado Joins Bury

We are delighted to confirm the signing of defender James Melhado ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The 25-year-old arrives at Gigg Lane with strong experience across the non-league pyramid, most recently playing for Warrington Town

Melhado began his career in the academy systems at Wolves and Burton Albion before making the step into senior football with Newcastle Town and Hanley Town.

A move to Salford City followed in 2021, where he signed his first professional deal and gained valuable experience within a full-time environment. During his spell with the Ammies, Melhado also spent time out on loan with Ashton United, AFC Telford United & Hereford, continuing his development in senior football.

After his release from Moor Lane, he made the move to sign for Truro City. He spent a season in Cornwall before heading back north to sign for Nantwich Town in the summer of 2024. Last season saw him top the appearance charts for Warrington Town, making 42 appearances.

Speaking after putting pen to paper at Gigg Lane, Melhado expressed his excitement at joining the Shakers and outlined what he hopes to bring to the squad:

“When Bury comes calling, you’re always going to take that conversation and that call.

“The club, the fans and the way everything is moving forward make it an attractive place to be. I’ve played a lot of minutes and a lot of games over the last few years. I can lean on that experience when things get tough. I can help some of the younger players who maybe haven’t played as many games and try to pass on some of that experience.

Speaking on his latest signing, Jonno added:

“James is a player I’ve been aware of since his Salford City days. His numbers last season were incredible, so he gives us another attacking outlet from the right flank. He’s a brilliant athlete as well as being technically outstanding and will give us great experience for a player at only 25 years old.”

James now becomes our third summer signing as preparations continue for the new season. Everyone at Bury FC would like to welcome James to Gigg Lane and wish him every success in white and blue.
