Bury won 2-0 away at Pilkington as the Shakers look to continue their push for the title, Cam Fogerty and Lewis Byrne spoke to the club to give us their thoughts on today’s game.
Cam Fogerty: “I thought we were really poor. First half, second half we gave it more of a go. I think first half it felt like they had more energy. They were a yard quicker than us and they had the majority of the momentum, I’d say up until about the 30th minute. We had a few good chances but second half I thought we were much better, got in their faces, pressed well. That’s where the goals came from, playing with intensity and tempo. I’m just relieved to get the three points because it was a tough day. They made it hard for us.”
He then spoke about the frustration of missing so many chances in the 1st half with him saying “Yes and no because we made a lot of chances, but I don’t feel like we deserved scoring them. I felt like Pilkerton gave us a great game first half and they came out with a lot of energy. For large periods of it, they were the better team so for us to go in 1-0 or 2-0 up would have been a bit of a disservice to Pilkerton. But second half, I think we thoroughly deserved it.”
Lewis then spoke about his goal today “Yes, definitely good to get on the score sheet but I feel like I could have done a little bit more today with the way it went. It wasn’t much of a game of football; I didn’t feel like the pitch didn’t really allow it. It was just a bit of a fight. But yes, obviously I’m glad to get the goal for the club.”
He then spoke about how it was important to get onto the score sheet as quick as possible in the second half, with him saying “Yes, of course, I think the main thing was just to be battling the first and second balls and obviously be more in the faces. I feel like we let them have the ball a little bit too much in the first half. As soon as we did start getting in the faces and obviously didn’t let them have a second, that was when the chances all started coming.”
Cam then spoke about whether there was any nerves when they were 1-0 up with him saying “You know what, at 1-0 I felt really comfortable. It was at 0-0 where I felt these could nick one here and if we go in at the break, 1-0 down, then it would be an uphill battle obviously. But at 1-0 I felt really comfortable and obviously they got the sending off which made it easier for them. Although I did think they played better with ten men, surprisingly. When Rusty scored, we knew that’s lights out then, game over, which obviously is a relief. Now it’s all eyes on next Saturday for another win.”
Cam then looked ahead to next week game vs Squires Gate at Gigg Lane “Well, if we would have played, we would have won. They’re still fighting to stay up, so it’ll be a tough game, but we’re at a gig. We know how well we can play at a gig. We’re unbeaten this season. I don’t envisage us losing there or dropping points there for the rest of the season. I think we’ll put them out.”
