Bury extended their unbeaten run to eighteen games in the league after a 1-1 draw with FC St Helens at Gigg Lane after DJ Pedro first-half goal was cancelled out by the visitors early into the second half.
“Very disappointing” was First Team Analyst Chris Watts reflection of the game.
“Look we had plenty of chances at least in the first half, where we should’ve gone in a couple of goals ahead and we still weren’t happy with the performance at half time. I thought we were sloppy and moved the ball slowly and I think when we do that we’re just letting sides come and sit and gives them something to try and cling on to and it’s what’s happened today and at the end, they almost won it which would’ve been unthinkable really like on the balance of the game but overall we’ve had some chances but I think we were poor.”
Bobby Carroll and Bebeto Gomes returned to the side following the injuries to both Josh Gregory and Sam Coughlan against Pilkington Watts reflected on their performances.
“I thought Bebeto [Gomes] was really good today and Bobby [Carroll] was really good as well they both tried to get us going and Bebeto was a constant threat up and down the right-hand side with Rusty [Stepans] and we’re pleased to have them back, obviously we needed them because we’re quite light in some areas at the minute after the weekend and some good minutes for them tonight hopefully they’re good to go on Saturday.”
DJ Pedro scored again, making it two in two, adding to the importance of having a goal scorer on the team.
“We’ve had discussions about that because out of the whole front line, it’s been Rusty who’s been carrying us a little bit so we’ve needed someone to step up the last couple of weeks, and DJ come in and done that and he’s done it again tonight he’s probably disappointed he doesn’t have another one as he did get another chance towards the end but he’s been good for us and it’s nice for him to get on the score sheet and hopefully another one on Saturday.”
Watts then spoke about Lewis Alessandra’s need for minutes after spells in and out of the team with an injury.
“He’s coming back from a groin injury and it’s one of those tough injuries where one minute you feel like your good and another minute you feel it again but he’s been okay the last couple of sessions he’s been involved tonight so hopefully we’ll get him some more minutes coming up and then it’ll be okay going forward but it’s one to monitor really.”
Looking ahead to Saturday, Watts said: “It’s very key and we’ve kind of had a target coming into a run of three games here and we’ve kind of let ourselves down tonight and that puts more emphasis on the game on Saturday, we need to see a reaction from everybody staff and players to go into that game on Saturday and turn up and give the fans something to shout about.”
