Match Info: FC Isle Of Man (H), Tue 26th Sept, 8pm KO

A new era begins in BL9 this week, after the Shakers unveiled their new manager on Monday evening. Dave McNabb joined up with the squad for the first time last night ahead of Tuesday night’s clash with the visiting islanders from the Isle of Man.

And he is itching to get going. Find out a bit more about our new manager here and listen to the manager’s first interview on our YouTube channel from early on Tuesday morning, by subscribing here.

Interim managers, Leon Mike and Stephen Sheil return to take the under-23s and they go with our thanks for stepping in during turbulent times. They left with a bang, following up the win on the Fylde coast last Tuesday with a thumping 4-1 against Colne at Gigg Lane on Saturday. Results which keep us right in the hunt at the top-of-the-table.

Catch highlights of Shakeel Jones-Griffiths grabbing his first goal at Gigg, alongside Harry Brazel and Andy Briggs with a second-half brace in the link below.
Striker Benito Lowe sat out the final game of his delayed three-match suspension on Saturday, and will be back in contention for Tuesday’s nights visit of FC Isle of Man.

In Opposition – FC Isle Of Man
FC Isle of Man was founded in 2020 and is a community-based football club which represents the island as a whole.

The Ravens, like ourselves, were officially accepted into the English non-league pyramid for the 2020/21 season. However, due to Covid restrictions and border controls into the island, the club were temporarily suspended from the league as it was not possible to fulfil all their fixtures by 31st May 2021, as required by the English FA.

With the entire season eventually scrapped due to further Covid outbreaks in early 2021, the 2021/22 season became their first in the non-league system.

Despite going top of the division temporarily in February after a dramatic 4-3 victory over eventual league champions West Didsbury, the Ravens ultimately finished second in the league but were promoted at the first attempt after defeating New Mills in the play-off final in front of more than 3,000 spectators at the Bowl. Last season, they finished a respectable 13th with some good late season form which moved them comfortably away from the relegation zone which had begun to look on the cards during mid-season.

So far this season, after a fast start with five wins in the opening seven games, results have tailed off and the Ravens are without a win in six. Last time out, they took part in a seesaw battle with AFC Liverpool and a share of the spoils in an eight-goal thriller.

    The Gaffer: Dave McNabb

Following the announcement of Dave McNabb as Bury Football Club’s 44th permanent manager, we look at the record behind the appointment and Dave’s footballing journey to this point.

Dave was a coach within the younger age groups at Manchester United in his early career before a youth managerial post at St Helen’s Town and reserve team manager position at Rainhill Town lead to taking his first managerial appointment at Billinge in the Cheshire League in 2018, winning the Warrington Guardian Cup during his short time at the club.

McNabb (centre) pictured with coach Frazer Ablett & joint player-manager Stuart Wellstead following early success at Rylands. This early success took McNabb to Warrington the following season, as joint-manager of newly-promoted Rylands (now Warrington Rylands 1906) who took their place in the North West Counties (NWCFL) for the first time. The NWCFL First Division South title was secured at the first attempt in 2018-19, amassing 111 league goals in the process, alongside the Champion Cup Winners secured when they overcame First Division North winners, Longridge Town.

With the 2019-20 season abandoned and results expunged as the Covid pandemic took hold across the world, Rylands were sat handily in second place with fewer than 10 games of the season to go. Beginning the equally disrupted 2020-21 season well, again sat in second when the league was curtailed, Rylands were selected for promotion, with the Football Association league allocations deeming their performances across the previous two seasons worthy of elevation to a higher division. They took their place in the Northern Premier League for the first time in the 2021-22 season.

Sealing the NPL West 2021-22 title at Warrington Rylands, McNabb holds aloft the silverware to cap off a stunning four years at Gorsey Lane. Assistant manager Tim Lees pictured on the far right. One competition that did continue to a conclusion during that period was the FA Vase, with Rylands coming out on top following a 3-2 final win against Binfield at Wembley in May 2021. Highlights of that game are available here.

McNabb had taken sole charge by this point, joined by his assistant Tim Lees and they proceeded to take Step 4 by storm at the first attempt, securing the title by one point, courtesy of a run of victories as the season came to a close and title rivals Workington only managing a draw against Market Drayton on the final day of the season. They finished with a significant goal-difference, scoring 95 league goals in the process.

He left Warrington Rylands in September 2022 after four and a half years at the club, with a record of three promotions, four trophies and an almost 70% win rate.
McNabb was unveiled as Macclesfield manager in 2022
In October of last year, he joined Macclesfield as manager replacing Danny Whittaker, a role he left later in the year.

He came back to football in March 2023, taking over as Bootle manager after veteran EFL defender Steve McNulty left the club. He steered the club to safety at the end of last season, after their early-season form threatened relegation.

His last game in charge of the Liverpool-based side was Saturday’s 2-0 FA Trophy win away at Stockton Town, with the Merseyside club sitting in ninth in the Northern Premier League West.

McNabb will be in dugout tomorrow evening for his first game as manager. If you want to be #PartofIt, get your tickets HERE.

Dave McNabb Appointed Men’s First Team Manager

Bury Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Dave McNabb as men’s first team manager.

He is joined at Gigg Lane by his assisant Tim Lees and they arrive after a six-month stint at Northern Premier League (NPL) side, Bootle.

An extensive list of candidates was generated following the request for applications last week, with Dave and his team being chosen from a strong shortlist interviewed for the position. As a ‘born winner’, with an objective to play progressive and attractive football, he was the obvious choice to take the club forward into the next stage as we look to move up through the National League System.

Football board chair, Marcel De Matas, told buryfc.co.uk how delighted he was to get a new manager in place quickly to build on the momentum of the recent two victories:
We also caught up with McNabb following the announcement, who was keen to stress how excited he was to be moving to Gigg Lane:
We will have more from Dave in his first interview as manager on Tuesday morning, available on our YouTube channel. Click to subscribe so you never miss a thing, HERE.

The new management team will be in charge for the first time this Tuesday, when we take on FC Isle of Man at Gigg Lane. Get your tickets to give Dave and his staff your biggest Gigg Lane welcome HERE.

Welcome to Bury, David, and Up the Shakers!
