Club Statement: Update

We can confirm that the FA have agreed to a stay of the sanction requiring us to close Gigg Lane to supporters whilst the appeal is heard.

There will be no sanctions until the appeal process concludes. This means that our game against Wythenshawe will be open for supporters of both sides to attend.

We are, however, mindful of the weather and potential for a postponement due to a frozen pitch so continue to advise supporters not to purchase tickets in advance at this stage purely for that reason.

Club Statement

Bury Football Club has been informed by Manchester FA that an independent committee has decided that due to the offensive comments made by two supporters during our game against West Didsbury and Chorlton in September, we should be forced to play our next two home games behind closed doors.

We reported the incident at the time, and provided video and other evidence to the police to assist their enquiries at some considerable cost to the club. We have not disputed the claims made. The individuals have not yet had their case heard by the law enforcement authorities and have been prevented from entering the stadium indefinitely whilst we await the outcome.

Our grounds for appeal are limited. We have accepted the facts of the incident, and do not believe that we acted in a way which was anything other than responsible and measured. We accept that the two individuals involved could have been removed from the stadium immediately but the stewards took a view at the time to stop any further problems and review the situation afterwards. We paid additional money to a CCTV specialist to review footage and provided this to the police. Our stewarding costs are £3-4,000 per game, it is not something we take lightly.

The basis of our appeal is that the punishment is excessive. We have seen multiple incidents over recent years of groups of supporters collectively issuing racist, misogynistic and homophobic abuse, as well as tragedy chanting. These have gone unpunished or have been dealt with by fines. We acted on the day. We are unable to completely control the words of two people in a crowd of 3,838 on that particular occasion.

We accept there should be a punishment, but excluding every well-behaved football supporter from a stadium which has already excluded those who perpetrated the offences, does nothing to promote inclusion.

The loss of revenue is extremely damaging and our belief is that it would be far better to use that revenue to fund a campaign intended to positively promote diversity and inclusion. Football needs to change, this would help make that change.

A stadium closure throws this opportunity away and is likely to ignite a more divisive and polarised debate on these important issues.

We have taken huge strides to actively promote diversity and inclusion since forming the club and have raised money and awareness throughout the borough through the hard work of our volunteers, many of whom will be deeply dismayed by this judgement as it punishes them despite their efforts.

For this reason we intend to appeal. It is not because we are in any way dismissive of the issues involved. The appeal process will take a number of weeks and we will continue to play in front of supporters during this period, and we will keep supporters updated as to any progress made as it happens.

We are also concerned that this specific judgment has been published publicly whilst matters are still being considered by the relevant law enforcement authorities.

New Signing: Ollie Kilner

Bury Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of Ollie Kilner on loan from Oldham Athletic, subject to league approval.
  Ollie Kilner – Image courtesy of Oldham Athletic The highly-sought after 19-year-old defender joins the club on a deal until the end of the season.

Kilner started his career as an 8-year-old at Manchester United where he captained his age groups through until Under 16s.

Following a broken leg, he signed a scholarship with the Red Devils before joining Oldham in July 2021.
 


Manager Dave McNabb says Kilner offers another option across the defence and midfield positions.
 

Ollie is expected to be involved in the matchday squad for Saturday’s trip to Litherland REMYCA. Tickets can be purchased here.

Match Info: Litherland REMYCA (A), Sat 13th Jan, 3pm KO

The Shakers chalked up another three points this past Saturday in front of a bumper Gigg Lane crowd of 3304, putting on a sensational attacking display in the second half and putting Irlam to the sword to jump back to the top of the North West Counties Premier Division.

Goals came from all three available strikers; with Dec Daniels slotting home a penalty past his former club, Andy Briggs taking advantage of a wayward back pass to power through and smash home, and finally Joe Hobson with a proper poachers effort in the 98th minute.

Dec Daniels was awarded his 5th Man Of The Match award in a row which is definitely a Shaker’s non-league-era record but we will have to check the record books to see if it’s been done by any other player previously.

We now move on to Saturday and a trip to Litherland Sports Park to face Litherland REMYCA, a side currently sitting 12th in the table with a record of 12 wins, 12 defeats, and 4 draws.

The club was established in 1959 as St Thomas Football Club and were initially based in Seaforth.

They were later renamed Bootle Church Lads Brigade, with Bootle YMCA becoming the club’s base.

In 1967 they became REM Social after a local working men’s club started financing the club, before being renamed REMYCA United the following year, the name reflecting links with the REM social club and the Bootle YMCA.

Under the new name the club joined Division Three of the I Zingari Alliance, winning it at the first attempt.After winning higher divisions in successive seasons, the club entered the I Zingari League.
The 1975–76 season saw REMYCA win the league’s Challenge Cup, and the club were league champions in 1987–88. In 1990–91 they won the Lancashire Amateur Cup.

The mid-1990s were a highly-successful period for the club as they won both the league title and the Challenge Cup in three successive seasons between 1993–94 and 1995–96, before winning the Challenge Cup again in 1998–99.

In 2001 they joined the newly re-established Division Two of the Liverpool County Combination. The two divisions merged into one the following season, but the club withdrew from the league midway through the 2002–03 season.

REMYCA returned to the I Zingari League and were Division Two champions in 2005–06. The league then merged with the Liverpool County Combination to form the Liverpool County Premier League, with the club placed in Division Two. They won the division in the league’s inaugural season and were promoted to Division One.

After a third-place finish in 2009–10 the club were promoted to the Premier Division. In 2013 they were renamed Litherland REMYCA. A fifth-place finish in the Premier Division in 2013–14 was enough to earn promotion to Division One of the North West Counties League.

In 2016–17 Litherland finished third in Division One, qualifying for the promotion play-offs; after beating Sandbach United 1–0 in the semi-finals, they lost 3–0 at home to City of Liverpool in the final in front of a record crowd of 1,303.

On the day: There is a car park with approx 150 spaces and a coach bay. There are marked disabled bays but these tend to fill quickly when there is high demand.

Disabled access to the centre is OK and on the flat.There is a disabled toilet which might be a little tricky on the pathways to the pitch however that said many disabled supporters have visited the venue.

There will be bar food available – pies, pasties, hot dogs, etc. A range of drinks including beers teas, coffees, soft drinks etc are also available.

Dogs on a lead are welcome as are flags, banners, drums as all add to the atmosphere.

For those who require more substantial food there is a Hungry Horse Pub on the main road as you turn right to the ground – The Netherton . It is recommendeed to book in advance.
