Our third pre-season fixture is just around the corner, and we’ll welcome NWCFL side Ashton Athletic to Gigg Lane on Tuesday night.

We picked up our first pre-season victory against National League North side Chester, in a 3-1 win at Gigg Lane. Dave McNabb’s side were playing in front of their home fans for the first time since their title win against Burscough in April.

DJ Pedro scored a brace, whilst Trialist B also got on the scoresheet, in front of a crowd of over 1,600.

We spoke with new signing Owen Robinson, who got his first taste of Gigg Lane at the weekend, as well as DJ Pedro & Dave McNabb.

Catch all the interviews & highlights below.

We are delighted to confirm our involvement in the Football Supporters’ Association’s Women’s Trophy, as part of our pre-season friendly with Chester this Sunday.

It’s the first friendly of the summer, for Jason Jarrett’s side as he looks to assess the squad. 12 players have been retained from a very successful season for our Women’s side. Click here to view the retained list.

Off the field, this weekend our fixtures are dedicated to our Month of Action in support of Mind, the national mental health charity, aimed at promoting mental wellbeing and reducing the stigma around mental health issues.

All proceeds from these matches will go directly to support the work of Mind at a local level, helping them provide essential services and support to those in our community who need it most.
FSA Women’s Trophy
The inaugural FSA Women’s Trophy was launched in 2023, and runs alongside the long-standing Brian Lomax Trophy and FSA Shield games in the men’s game. All three trophies celebrate football club community-ownership.

The introduction of the fixture stemmed from a project called ‘Nevertheless, She Persisted’ which was a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the ban on women’s football, as well as the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the lifting of the ban.

The project saw two fixtures (one in the South and one in the North) take place between four community-owned women’s teams (Enfield Town Women v Grays Athletic Women and FC United of Manchester Women v Clapton CFC) back in the summer of 2021.

The current holders are Clapton CFC Women, who beat Enfield Town 3-1 at the Dave Bryant Stadium last July, which meant they retained the title having beaten FC United of Manchester in 2023.
Richard Irving, Network Manager at the FSA said:
Our women’s first team play in the North West Women’s Regional League Premier Division, whilst Chester play in Division 1 South of the same league.
Deborah Dilworth, head of women’s football at the FSA added:

Our first Men’s first team game at Gigg Lane since our promotion party back in April is upon us, as we welcome National League North side Chester this Saturday.

It’s our second friendly of the summer, after a 1-1 draw against Atherton LR last weekend, Kai Evans scored his first goal after his off-season arrival from Nantwich Town.

Dave McNabb brought a 23-man squad to Crilly Park, with four trialists being a part of the action. This game will offer another opportunity for minutes in their legs for the players.

Our Women’s First Team take on Chester this Sunday, playing for the Football Supporters Association Community-Owned Women’s Cup
In Opposition – Chester

This is the opening friendly for Callum McIntyre’s side, who missed out on promotion to the National League after losing in the play-off final to S¿¿¿¿horpe United, after the Seals finished fourth in the table during the regular season.

They have reached the playoffs in two of the last three seasons and will be looking to go one step further in 2025/26 season.

This afternoon will be the first time since March 2009 that Chester have visited Gigg Lane. Read more here on the history of the two clubs.

We welcome Chester FC back to Gigg Lane after a gap of sixteen years for this afternoon’s friendly match.

The two clubs have met each other in various competitions on sixty-five occasions, so let’s take a look as some of those meetings.

FIRST EVER GAME between the two clubs came immediately after World War Two began. The 1939/40 Football League season had been abandoned after just three games were played and clubs were arranging friendly games in order to give the public some relief from the conflict. On December 16, 1939 the Shakers travelled to Sealand Road and won a goal-filled game 4-3.

THE FIRST FOOTBALL LEAGUE GAME came during the 1957/8 campaign, Bury’s solitary season in Division Three North, with the two clubs meeting on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. With ex-Shaker Stan Pearson in the Seals’ line-up, Chester (in 22nd place) beat Bury (in 2nd place) 2-1 at Gigg Lane and earned a 0-0 draw at Chester.

MOST GOALS IN A GAME was the 4-4 draw at Sealand Road in December 1987, when the Shakers scored twice in the closing three minutes through Peter Valentine and Liam Robinson to claim an unlikely point.

MOST GOALS BY ONE PLAYER stands at 4, with Andy Bishop scoring four for Bury in his 8 league and cup games against today’s visitors.  For Chester, Gary Bennett and a certain Ryan Lowe also each scored 4 goals against Bury, with Ryan claiming a last gasp 90th minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Gigg Lane in March 2009 – the very last Football League game between the two clubs.

SENT OFF players versus Chester stand at four for Bury, Chris Lucketti, Colin Woodthorpe, Andy Bishop and Ryan Cresswell.  Les Steele is the only Chester player to be dismissed – for celebrating his second goal in the FA Cup game in December 2006 at Gigg by jumping into the visiting fans and earning a second yellow card.
Our club record vs Chester can be seen below:
