Dave McNabb has spoken of his plans and expectations for his team during pre-season. The Shakers will play their first friendly away at Atherton LR next Saturday. With the squad already back in training ahead of the 2025/26 season, the manager was in bullish mood.

“It’s started really well,” he explained. “The lads have come back in really good condition physically.

We’ve tested them a few times in terms of the physical output. [They are] looking really good, really strong.”

The Shakers were crowned champions of the NWCFL Premier Division in April after finishing the season with 15 consecutive wins.

Promotion to the Northern Premier League West Division was sealed with a 4-0 victory over Burscough in front of almost 9,000 fans at Gigg Lane.

As well as retaining the majority of his title-winning team, McNabb has added six new signings over the summer break.

“The number one priority of the summer was to make sure we retained the majority of that team,” he said.

Speaking about what he expects from his players over pre-season, McNabb said: “It’s about making sure we’ve got the tactics, the principles, the way we want to play both in and out of possession.
Pre-season will see us take on National League North sides Chester (July 12), Buxton (July 19) and Radcliffe (July 26), while Shakers legend Ryan Lowe is set to bring a Wigan Athletic XI to Gigg Lane (July 29).

We’ll face two sides from the NWCFL as well, Ashton Athletic (July 15) and Cheadle Town (July 22).
On Saturday, hundreds of supporters descended on Gigg Lane for the annual family fun day, which included an open training session from the first team.

In May 2023, we sadly lost our very own Amanda ‘Mandy’ Freeman. A supporter of Bury for many years, she was always keen to support the club in as many ways as she could.

Following her passing, her friends and the wider club volunteers came together to sponsor the number six home and away shirts in her name.

Volunteer Co-ordinator, Sam Harman said:
Fans can purchase a ticket for £5, with the aim to raise the £160 required to be able to sponsor the shirt.

A maximum of 100 tickets are available to purchase, with additional funds going to a charity close to Mandy’s heart – Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary. Last season, we raised £300 for the Ramsbottom based charity on-top of the funds raised for the shirt.

The winner of the raffle will receive the number six shirts at the end of the season, signed by all players.

We will confirm the date of the raffle in due course, it’s expected to take place at an early home game of the season.

Bury Football Club has been a central point for the local community for 140 years. After fighting through our own battles as a club, we have now been able to further invest in the wellness of our players, staff, supporters and the wider community. From our ever-growing fan-base to our popular recreational and youth teams, Bury FC is about the people and for the people and we now have a dedicated team of Mental Health First Aiders who are here to help signpost you to the support you may need.

Since 2024, we have been working with The Football Mental Health Alliance and we have formed a small committee made up of our players from our women’s and men’s recreational teams and fans. Leading this initiative is Tania Jackson, our club’s Safeguarding and Welfare Officer, she is joined by Mark Lomas, Jess Reed, Ben Travis, Samantha Radcliffe and Aaron Wilkinson. Together, they form the core of our Mental Health First Aiders, dedicated to offering assistance and support.

This investment reflects our commitment to fostering an environment where mental health concerns are met with empathy and prompt support, aiming to combat stigma and raise awareness of available resources. It exemplifies Bury Football Club’s commitment to ensuring everyone in our community has access to a supportive network.

By investing in this training, we prioritise individual well-being and align with broader initiatives promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. We believe in nurturing an environment where open conversations about mental health are encouraged and practical support is readily accessible. They are not therapists or psychiatrists, but they have undergone training so they can give you initial support and most importantly signpost you to the appropriate support services if required.

We encourage anyone in need to reach out to a member of our Mental Health First Aider team without hesitation. For assistance or enquiries about available platforms, please email mhfa@buryfc.co.uk to connect with one of our designated Mental Health First Aiders, who will guide you appropriately.

Together, let’s continue to cultivate a community where mental health is not only acknowledged but also given the utmost priority, support and understanding.
