New Additions to Dave McNabb’s coaching staff

Ahead of tomorrow’s pre-season opener at Atherton LR, Dave McNabb has added two new members to his backroom staff, with Craig Carney and Josh Porter joining the existing management team

Carney, who joins as First Team coach, is no stranger to non-league, having turned out for clubs such as Lancaster City, Marine, FC United of Manchester and Warrington Town throughout his playing career. The former midfield maestro ended last season at Northern Premier League West champions Widnes, and turn out against Bury for Avro in the Shakers FA Cup victory at the Vestacre Stadium.

Porter joins the staff as Strength & Conditioning coach, having spent the last two seasons working at Wrexham with the academy.

The start of this first of eight pre-season friendlies is a big moment in the life of our new-look, fan-owned Bury FC. The amazing achievements of our 2024-25 season are now history, and the challenge is to do it all again.


Our squad is a good mix of established favourites who were with us at the end of last term and a handful of new lads who can’t wait to get started in a Bury shirt.


They all turned up for their first training session fit and raring to go, and have enjoyed the pre-season preparations – including the open training session during Saturday’s Family Day at Gigg Lane.


Manager Dave McNabb is looking to win all eight friendlies – a tall order, given some of the teams we’ll be up against. But we’re going for it, and need the fans to be part of it.


So please get behind the lads as we kick off the 2025-26 season at the Crilly Park.
In Opposition – Atherton LR

LR were NWCFL Division One North champions last season, so they take our place as we move up to the Northern Premier West Division.


Atherton’s title was part of a triple triumph which also included winning the Edward Case and First Division Champions Cup – quite a feat for the club and 25-year-old manager David Jones.


They also had a good run in the FA Vase and were the only northern club in the last 16, just three games away from Wembley.


The club was created in 1956 and it is 15 years since they last played in the NWCFL Premier Division.   
Admission & Tickets
This fixture is pay on the gate only. Adults – £6.00, Concessions – £3.00, Under 16s – Free with a paying adult.
Travel & Parking
Nearest Railway: Atherton Station – approx. 8-minute walk (0.4 miles) from the ground.

Nearest Bus Route to Ground: Take the 582 bus between Bolton and Leigh. Alight near Atherton Train Station and follow the route along Upton Road, over the railway bridge. Turn left onto Springfield Road, then left onto Hillside Avenue – walk for approx. 300m to reach the stadium

Driving: Take the M61 to Junction 5. Follow signs for Westhoughton, turn left onto the A6. At the first set of lights, turn right onto Newbrook Road. Turn right onto Upton Road, passing Atherton Central Station. Finally, turn left onto Spa Road

Parking Facilities: There is a medium-sized car park located directly outside the main gates at Crilly Park. Additional street parking is available in the surrounding area. Please do not park in front of the stadium gates or at the bus stop, and ensure you are parking respectfully in residential areas – especially not blocking any driveways. If you need any assistance with parking or directions on matchday, Atherton LR’s friendly volunteers will be on hand to help.

Ground Facilities: Gates at the SafeGasUK Stadium (Crilly Park) will open from 12PM, and the Clubhouse will be open from the same time for those to enjoy some pre-match drinks.

Live sport will also be shown in the clubhouse before kick-off, and it will remain open post-match for any fans wanting to stay a little longer.

A hot-food counter located just outside the pitchside area will be open, serving locally sourced and highly rated favourites including cheeseburgers and hot dogs.


#NonLeagueDogs: Atherton LR are a dog-friendly club, so supporters bringing their four-legged friends are welcome – just make sure all dogs are kept on a lead throughout the game.

This season, fans at Gigg Lane will notice something new both pitch side and high in the stands- bold, engaging messages encouraging supporters to look after their health while backing their team. Bury FC is proud to support the Healthy Stadia movement, demonstrating its commitment to the wellbeing of its fans and the wider community.

Recognising Gigg Lane as a space where the community comes together, Bury FC and Bury Council’s Public Health Team are using the stadium as a platform to promote health in a way that feels relevant, accessible, and inspiring. This marks the first campaign of its kind in a football ground in Bury- an exciting step in connecting sport with community wellbeing.

The new signage, sponsored by Bury Council’s Public Health Team and supported by Bury FC, is part of a pilot campaign aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of quitting smoking. With messages like “Clear lungs. Louder chants,” the initiative is designed to spark conversations and guide fans toward free, local stop smoking support through the Bury Live Well Service.

This campaign also forms part of the wider “Making Smoking History” initiative, led by the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, which aims to reduce smoking rates and eliminate tobacco-related harm across the region. Bury FC is proud to play a role in this regional ambition by using its platform to promote healthier lifestyles.

We are excited to announce a packed day of football activity at Gigg Lane on Saturday 5th July as we take part in the FA’s Big Football Day – a national celebration of grassroots football, inclusion and the power of the beautiful game.

This family-friendly day brought to you in association with Manchester FA will showcase the very best of what our club and community have to offer, with something for everyone to enjoy – whether you’re a budding footballer, a passionate supporter or simply looking for a fun day out.

There will be plenty on throughout the day, culminating with our Women’sEuro 2025 watch party in Starkies from 7pm.


Wildcats Girls Football Session (11.30-1pm)

Our youngest footballers will take centre stage with a Wildcats session, specially designed for girls aged 4-11 who are new to the game or are already experienced team players. These fun, engaging and inclusive sessions offer a great way to build confidence, stay active and make new friends in a safe and supportive environment.

Squad Girls’ Football Session (1-2.30pm)

Older girls aged 12-16 can get involved in our Squad Girls’ Football session – the perfect place to continue their football journey, try new skills and experience the joy of being part of a team. Led by qualified coaches, this session aims to keep teenage girls engaged in sport and having fun.

Women’s Recreational Football Tournament (3-7pm)

The afternoon will feature the Greater Manchester Women’s Flexi League annual 7 a-side tournament, with women of all ages and abilities coming together to play an represent their respective teams from across the region. Bury FC have entered an impressive 5 teams into the tournament and we’d love Shakers fans to come down and show their support. 


EURO 2025 Watch Party (From 7pm)

The day will round off with a EURO 2025 Watch Party as we come together in Starkies Bar at Gigg Lane to support the England Lionesses in their UEFA Women’s EURO qualifier. With the match shown live, this is a chance for the whole community to unite behind our national team and celebrate the growth of the women’s game. The evening is suitable for both children and adults and costs just £2 per person, payable on the door. This also includes pizza at half time for all.

Bury FC Crown Green Bowling Competition 2025

Our Crown Green Bowling Competition will return for its second year, on Sunday 10th August 2025.

We are again returning to The Stanley Conservative Club to host this year’s event. Our sponsor as with last year is Polytec (UK) Ltd. a family run plastic fabrication company based in Bury. We thank them for their continuing sponsorship.

Following on from last year’s inaugural completion involving 24 participants with the winners being Mitch Toth and Kim Peake.

As with the previous year, this event is primarily a charity event, with the charity being ‘Sam’s Gift’ a local Bury based charity started in memory of Sam, their mission is to bring moments of comfort, joy and connection to teenagers, young adults, and families navigating the challenges of cancer diagnosis and end-of-life care.

We also thank Stanley Conservative Club for their continuing patronage with allowing us to run the event at their club.   There will be teas/coffees/alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments available within the bar area. Please bring your own food or purchase locally to the Stanley, all can be consumed with the Stanley premises.


Bowling will kick off at 11:30 a.m. and run through to approximately 6:00 p.m. We hope to increase participation this year from 24 to 32 entrants (16 pairs) – a mix of seasoned bowlers and enthusiastic first-timers. Don’t worry if you’ve never bowled before – non-bowlers will be provided with equipment and paired with more experienced players, making this a perfect opportunity to try something new in a relaxed and supportive environment.


The format is designed for maximum enjoyment and competition:


Group winners proceed to semi-finals, followed by a grand final to crown the 2025 champions
16 pairs split into 4 groups (A–D)
Each group plays a round-robin (three 9-end matches per team)
Results will collated on a win/score basis – with the highest team from each group going forward to the semi-finals. The semi-final draw will take place for a one of game to achieve our finalists.


Then the final will be played, resulting in our Bury FC Crown Green Bowling Competition 2025 champion pair.
