WOMEN’S MATCH PREVIEW: CREWE ALEXANDRA WOMEN FC (H) SUN 15TH SEPT 2PM KICK-OFF

Our women’s first team hosts Crewe Alexandra Women FC on Sunday, following two consecutive away games, with the Shakers looking to claim the home advantage after losses against Mancunian Unity Women First and Tranmere Rovers Women.


Crewe Alexandra currently sit 7th in the table, one place behind Bury. Out of five games played in the season, Crewe have had their highs and lows with three losses against Curzon Ashton (0-2) and (3-1) and Wythenshawe (6-0). The team has also secured two wins, against Fleetwood Town Wrens (4-3) and Tranmere Rovers (4-1).


Last season saw Bury both win and lose against Crewe, with the Shakers winning 3-2 back in January and experiencing a 2-0 defeat in April.


Come and get behind the girls on Sunday as they look to regain their successful start-of-season streak and secure another three points. Entry via turnstile (West Stand) from 1pm.

Legends Wall Update

We’d like to provide an update on our Legends Wall.
 
First of all, we’d like to thank all fans who sponsored a player from down the years. 
 
We’re currently working with our Heritage Committee to create the 15 history panels that will be interjected into the player panels, matching the relevant players to the correct era. 
 
Once designed we will publish each history panel and open these up for sponsorship. 
 
We’re hoping to launch the Legends Wall at our first home game in October.

Match Info: Glossop North End (A), Tue 10th Sept, 7:45pm KO

Dave McNabb’s 50th game in charge of the Shakers came with late drama at the weekend, with a 1-1 draw away at FC Isle of Man.

Ben Hockenhull equalised in the sixth minute of stoppage time, after Sean Doyle opened the scoring for the Ravens 11 minutes into the second half.

The fans were in fine voice in the Manx’s capital, after hundreds made the trip across the Irish Sea for the second time this calendar year. Luckily with no delays this time!

It’s the second away game of four in this run of fixtures. We head to Blyth at the weekend and then Ramsbottom, but focus for now is on Glossop North End.

      In Opposition – Glossop North End
The club was founded in 1886 and joined the North Cheshire League four years later. Glossop spent two seasons each in The Combination and the Midland League, before moving to North Road and being elected into the Football League Second Division in 1898. Having been promoted in the 1898–99 season, they spent one season in the First Division. During this period the club was bankrolled by Sir Samuel Hill-Wood, who was later to become chairman of Arsenal. The club retains some connections with Arsenal. Glossop were relegated in 1900 and spent the next fifteen seasons in the Second Division, before exiting the Football League during World War I.

Post-war, they spent 1920 to 1957 in the Manchester League, being crowned champions in 1927–28. They moved from the Lancashire Combination back to the Manchester League in 1966, and then spent four seasons in the Cheshire County League from 1978 before the North West Counties was formed in 1982 in which Glossop were founder members, they had a 33-year stint in the league before winning the Premier Division title at the end of the 2014–15 campaign. They were beaten finalists in the FA Vase in 2009 and 2015.

In April 2023 GNE were relegated from Step 4 after a period of eight years, ending manager Stuart Mellish’s two-year stint at the helm. Michael Worthington was appointed as manager in the summer of 2023 as the Hillmen head into their first season back in the NWCFL.

Last season they finished 21st in the table – won 11, drawn 10, lost 25. Both Bury & Glossop won their respective league home game last season.

Match Info: FC Isle of Man (A), Sat 7th Sept, 6pm KO

The fixture everyone looks for in the calendar, it’s a trip to Douglas for the Shakers this weekend as we take on FC Isle of Man at The Bowl, kick-off 6pm.

We’re once again heading across in our numbers with travel plans having been in place for many fans since the day the fixtures came out in July. For those who are traveling to the game, do check out the travel guide provided for supporters to take in all the best aspects of the island whilst they are there. Click here to read.

We head into the fixture on a run of 11 unbeaten matches (as we did going into this fixture last year) and picked up a win at home to South Liverpool on Tuesday night.
    Following Tuesday’s win, we caught up with Debutant Ben Hockenhull, Man of the Match Bryan Ly and goalkeeper coach Sam Ashton.
 
  Opponents – FC Isle of Man
FC Isle of Man was founded in 2020 and is a community-based football club which represents the island as a whole.

The Ravens were officially accepted into the English non-league pyramid for the 2020/21 season. However, due to Covid restrictions and border controls into the island, the club were temporarily suspended from the league as it was not possible to fulfil all their fixtures by 31st May 2021, as required by the English FA.

Subsequently the season as a whole was eventually suspended due to further Covid outbreaks in early 2021 and the 2021/22 season became their first in the non-league system.

Despite going top of the division temporarily in February after a dramatic 4-3 victory over eventual league champions West Didsbury, the Ravens ultimately finished second in the league but were promoted at the first attempt after defeating New Mills in the play-off final in front of more than 3,000 spectators at the Bowl.

Current manager, Paul Jones, stepped in to take the top job permenantly in February 2023 after a period as interim manager. The club’s first manager Chris Bass left in the November before, following a difficult start to life in Step 5. Their first season in the Premier Division in 2022-23 however ended in consolidation, with a 13th place finish after a strong end to the season.

The Ravens go into the weekend in 12th place in the league, with three wins, two draws and four draws from their opening nine matches. The Ravens picked up a 3-1 win in their most recent fixture on the mainland against Prestwich Heys on Tuesday night.

WOMEN’S MATCH PREVIEW: TRANMERE ROVERS WOMEN (A) SUN 8TH SEPT 2PM KICK-OFF

Our women’s first team heads to Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Sunday, as we face Tranmere Rovers Women in our reverse fixture.

The match comes following three consecutive home games at Gigg Lane.

After a 5-1 loss against Mancunian Unity on 1st September, the Shakers will be looking to return to previous form following a four match unbeaten run.

Tranmere currently sit ninth in the table, four below Bury’s fifth place. Out of four games played so far, Tranmere have experienced an unpredictable season, winning 1-0 against Salford City FC Lionesses, drawing 1-1 against Wythenshawe and losing 3-2 to the Shaker and 4-1 against Crewe Alexandra.

Match report: Bury FC Women vs Mancunian Unity FC

A clinical second half showing by Mancunian Unity hands Bury their first defeat of the season.

The first part of the game saw the two teams share even amounts of possession, with chances from outside of the box at either end being the only form of attempted goal scoring. Shortly after the 30-minute mark, Mitchell crossed the ball into the box from the left-hand side which hit the hand of Rachel Blythe, the referee then awarded Mancunian Unity a penalty for a handball. Payton stepped up to the spot kick and slotted it into the bottom right corner.

Bury were quick to reply though, as just under 10 minutes later Natalie Ainsworth unleashed a 30-yard screamer which dipped over the keeper’s head and into the back of the net.

The first half ended with a goal a piece for either side, and both teams having a relatively even number of chances.

Rain started pouring down at the beginning of the second half as Unity started off very quickly with Payton doubling her tally, after a rebounded shot from Groves’ save in the 47th minute. The away side then began to dominate the game, coming very close to taking the lead with various shots and crosses from close range.

They eventually found their edge as they scored 3 goals in 9 minutes. Their third was put away by Mitchell as she used some tricky footwork to create space in Bury’s box where she then lobbed Groves to make it 3-1. Two minutes later, Unity were causing havoc again as Bamber curled in an effort from outside of the box into the top right corner after a deflected throw landed at her feet. The final goal of the game was scored by Shaw in the 74th minute after Groves attempted to play out of the back, but unfortunately gave the ball away which left Shaw with an open net to make it 5-1.

The match then began to fizzle out as it appeared as though Unity were comfortable with their lead, whilst Bury tightened up their defence to ensure that the deficit didn’t increase. The final whistle blew and Unity picked up all three points at Gigg Lane.

Skipper Dannielle Bailey picked up back-to-back Player of The Match awards as she again showed great leadership and communication skills, even when the game looked bleak.

An obviously disappointing result for the Shakers after showing great form at the start of the season. Bury will attempt to pick themselves back up from this defeat and get another victory against Tranmere on Sunday, whom they have already beaten 3-2 this season.
