    Men’s Player Of The Month – January

    Tom Moore, your choice (& also Sam Ashton’s!) for December What a start to 2024 we have had! There may not have been many games, due to the weather conditions through January, but what we have done in the matches through the period has been nothing short of phenomenal.

    19 goals scored, two clean sheets (only one conceded) out of three games, and nine points comfortably gained in the process.

    Match Info: Pilkington FC (A), Sat 3rd Feb, 3pm KO

    In our last outing Dave McNabbs men put Skelmersdale United to the sword in an emphatic 10 – 1 victory. A result that is a new league record for The Shakers surpassing the 8 – 0 set against Huddersfield Town way back in January 1970.

    Goals for; Andy Briggs, Connor Comber, Andy Scarisbrick, Dec Daniels, Arthur Lomax-Jones, Benito Lowe, Sam Burns and a debut hattrick for local lad Jacob Holland-Wilkinson left the Gigg Lane faithful in no doubt that the team has their eyes fully set on the task ahead of them in the next fifteen games.

    Our next outing see’s us travel to St Helens to face another Merseyside team, Pilkington Football Club. The last time the two sides met it was a closely contested affair until the final 10 minutes with Bury putting the foot on the pedal, piling on the pressure to come away with a 3-1 win.

    We will be facing a much changed and very youthful Pilks side as manager Ste Palfrey stepped back following the November fixture at Gigg, making way for Matt Potter and Kev Langley to take the Glass’ reigns sparking a transformation of the playing squad, as is often the case at this level.

    Get down to the Arcoframe on Saturday and help us bring the three points back to Bury as we continue our push for promotion.

        ‘Playing Away’ – Episode Seven
        Opponents – Pilkington Football Club

    Pilkington Football Club, officially founded in 1938, boasts a rich history rooted in the Pilkington glass factory in St Helens. Originating from workers’ teams in the 19th century, the club officially formed in 1938 after the amalgamation of St Helens’ works teams. The early years were marked by participation in various leagues, with the club joining the Mid-Cheshire League in 1983/84.

    Over the decades, managerial changes and league challenges characterized the club’s journey. Notably, the 1992/93 season marked a shift in focus towards youth development under Dave Burrows. The late 1990s witnessed the 1st Team’s ascent, securing promotion in 1997/98. The early 2000s saw a rejuvenation led by managers Dave Burrows and Andy Hockenhull, achieving success in the Liverpool Junior Cup.

    The 2010s brought managerial changes and a renewed emphasis on professionalism. The club experienced both relegation and promotion, with Ste Palfrey taking over in 2015/16. The 2017/18 season marked a turning point, with Pilkington FC achieving promotion to the Cheshire League Premier Division and expanding its junior and women’s teams.

    The 2019/20 season saw the club enter the North West Counties Football League, Division One North. Managerial changes occurred in 2020/21, with Ste Palfrey returning for his third spell. In the 2022/23 season, Pilkington FC triumphed as North West Counties First Division North Champions, culminating in their third promotion in five seasons. The club’s growth extends beyond the men’s senior team, now fielding multiple women’s and junior teams, showcasing a flourishing community presence.

    The closest train station is St Helens Central which is approximately 2km away. There also railway stations at Thatto Heath (2.5km) and Eccleston Park (3.5km).

    There are bus stops on Rivington Road, Dentons Green Lane and Tennis Street (all within 250m of the Sports Village)

    Travel by car
    Leave A580 East Lancashire Road at Windle Island and turn onto Rainford Road. Follow Rainford Road and turn right onto Dentons Green Lane. Take your second left onto Ruskin Drive and follow the road until you reach the complex.
    From Liverpool leave M57 at junction 2 for A57 and follow signs for Prescot along High Street, ground signposted on left, Hope Street, as above.

    Car Parking

    There is a free car park on site for supporters to us and parking available via local residential street parking. When parking locally to the ground, supporters attending the game are requested to be mindful of local residents. Please leave space for residents to access properties at all times.

    The Arcoframe Stadium has a 200 seater covered stand from which spectators can enjoy the game. There is also space for standing spectators on the North, East and South sides of the ground. There is no segregation. Home and away flags and banners are welcome.

    There is a ‘refreshment kiosk’ on the ground prior to kick off and during the game with hot food and drinks on sale (pies, sausage rolls, bacon barms, tea, coffee, etc).

    There is also a fully licensed bar and clubhouse ‘The Wicket Bar and Grub’ for home and away supporters which is situated 50M from the ground. It opens at 12 noon on Saturdays and 6pm on midweek nights. A full range of food plus alcoholic and soft drinks available before, during and after the match. There is also BT Sports and Sky Sports matched shown.

    Club Statement: Fan Behaviour

    There was a short delay in the game restarting towards the end of the 90 minutes on Saturday due to three people attempting to enter the playing area. They were stopped from getting onto the pitch by stewards. Two of them did not co-operate and took some time to be restrained and removed.

    We have a number of eye witness statements, as well as video evidence, and are conducting our own investigation. We will act to protect the club and everyone working at the club from this behaviour. Where there are possible criminal offences, we will hand over evidence to the police to review.

    We have also made a number of policy decisions to further protect the club. These include:
     
    We will suspend the sale of alcohol in the stands during the game as a minimum and consider an outright ban. Starkies Bar will remain open before and after games, and the 1885 Suite will operate as usual for those ticket holders. We will release more information on this once a decision has been made.
      We will enforce stricter stewarding to prevent any potential encroachment of the pitch, including stopping anyone standing near the pitch during the game.
      We will ask players to be mindful where they celebrate goals and avoid areas where people are congregating.
    We know people have historically congregated in the corner of the South and West (Manchester Road End) Stands at the end of games for decades, as they have looked for a quick exit from the ground. Nowadays matches last for an additional five or ten minutes and it’s hard to know when the final whistle will be. Please stay in your seats until the final whistle where you can use any of three exits to leave the South Stand. These are behind the the Manchester Road End, in front of the Manchester Road End or through the Cemetery End. There is no need for anyone to stand before the final whistle other than to leave the stadium or go to the lavatory.

    We all recognise that an incredibly small percentage of Bury supporters are responsible for the problems we’ve faced in recent weeks, and it is bitterly disappointing that two or three people in a crowd of well over 3,000 can ruin the enjoyment of football for us all. However, we have to act now in the belief that we can then return to a more relaxed atmosphere in the future. We are concerned that the consumption of excessive alcohol is an enabler to anti-social behaviour.

    Today we should be talking about football, not crowd behaviour, but we will continue to punish and prevent anti-social behaviour where we find it.
