Match Info: West Didsbury & Chorlton (A), Sat 28th Oct, 3pm KO

What a way to follow up a bad result: two wins and two clean sheets, in-front of two bumper crowds at Gigg Lane in the past week, which put us clear at the top of the league as we head to another play-off chasing side this Saturday.

The Step Places Stadium is the venue for a sell-out clash, as fifth placed West Didsbury & Chorlton welcome the top-of-the-table Shakers to South Manchester. West’s form of two wins in seven league games will no doubt be a concern to manager Chris Rowley, but if the reverse fixture from early September is anything to go by – we are in for some fireworks.

Benito Lowe’s return from early season injury was timed perfectly, as he swiveled past his marker with added time almost up to place the ball into the top corner and send the majority of the 3,838 crowd home delighted following a pulsating 4-3 win. Recap the best bits, with our highlights below.
 

A 4-0 drubbing of Wythenshawe Town last weekend, with a debut hat-trick from Joe Duckworth was followed up with a more workmanlike performance against a lowly-placed Squires Gate on Tuesday. The game saw Lowe grab his 11th of the season and become the difference between the two sides. He left the field with strapping on his thigh, and of equal concern to manager Dave McNabb, Andy Scarisbrick left the field hobbling in the second half following a nasty challenge.

McNabb hope will pull up in time for the trip to West, otherwise their will no doubt be a scrap for the starting number nine shirt, with Dan Cockerline (right) joining Andy Briggs on the subs bench just before kick-off on Tuesday. Both will be vying to be on the teamsheet come Saturday at 3pm.

With a current record of seven wins from the last 10 is impressive, the manager admitted to a questioning of the squad’s mentality at points on Tuesday night. He will be pleased no doubt that whilst struggling at stages against Gate, the side still came away with the win – the sign of a good side in development.

The wins keep putting the pressure onto the chasing pack, who return to league action this weekend – with Wythenshawe taking on FC Isle of Man and Kendal Town traveling to nearby Ramsbottom United.

      In Opposition – West Didsbury & Chorlton
West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. in 1908, over 100 years ago, by Mr. R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

Competing as a grassroots club in the South Manchester area for the majority of their existence, ‘West’ applied to enter the Manchester League structure in 2006 and after fitting floodlights at Brookburn Road (now called the Step Places Stadium) to meet FA requirements in 2011, were permitted into the NWCFL in 2012.

West reached the Premier Division for the very first time in 2022, following the winning of the Division One South league. They finished a respectable 9th last season, with 64 points and amassing a competitive 81 goals in the process.

West Didsbury processed ticket sales online and these are now all sold-out. If you do not have a ticket, it is strongly recommended that you do not travel to the game.

Driving: From the M60 take junction 5 onto Princess Road towards city centre. Turn left at Christie Fields offices/Premier Inn onto Barlow Moor Road and continue past Chorlton Park to Chorlton bus station. Turn left into Beech Road, then 2nd left into Reynard Road and continue past the Chorltonville sign passing over 5 speed ramps as far as Brookburn Primary School. Turn left into Brookburn Road and continue to the end of the cul de sac, through the gateway and down the tarmac access which leads into the ground.

Parking: There is strictly no spectator parking on the ground, (apart from pre-booked disabled motorists with a blue badge). Bury fans can park for free at Hardy Farm which is accessed at the end of Hardy Lane, M21 8DP. Walk from car park to ground is approx. 5 minutes – shown here.
 

When parking locally to the ground, supporters attending the game are requested to be mindful of local residents. Please leave space for residents to access properties at all times.

Ground Facilities: Clubhouse, Bar(s) Tea Bar, Merchandise stall, limited seating capacity and undercover standing. Credit & debit cards are accepted.

Captain – Tom Moore

Tom Moore has been confirmed as the new club captain of Bury Football Club.

Manager Dave McNabb hosted a vote amongst the players and staff, to choose the new captain with Tom selected to lead the team in this new era.

Moore joined from Bootle only a matter of weeks ago, but has impressed as a towering presence in defence, as well as showing skills with the ball at his feet. Being able to offer either cross-field diagonals or quick balls into our forwards with precision has formed an important part of the new manager’s tactical plans.

Charlie Doyle will be vice-captain with Oliver Jepson as third choice. Senior players, Andy Scarisbrick and Chris Rowney will make up the leadership group of five.

We return to Gigg Lane for our second league game in three days, as we host Squires Gate in the NWCFL. This is a chance to extend our lead at the top of the league, so get on down and get behind the boys!
  Saturday saw an emphatic 4-0 win against Wythenshawe Town, a debut hat-trick from Joe Duckworth and Andy Scarisbrick also on the scoresheet gave Dave McNabb’s side a perfect Saturday afternoon.

  In Opposition – Squires Gate
Squires Gate were formed in 1948 as Squires Gate British Legion FC and competed in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. ‘Gate’ are therefore celebrating their 75th season in 2023.

Managed by Luke Evans, the club has gone through quite significant change in recent years starting with the Covid pandemic, and the passing of chairman Tony Jo resulting in the club on just surviving during the summer of 2022.

Despite these troubles, the club has maintained its position in the Premier Division of the league, finishing 20th last season and avoiding the relegation trap door by five points. For more historical information on our visitors, click HERE.

  Parking: Our new car-park policy for the upcoming season is now in force.
  Due to the limited space within the car park at Gigg Lane, it is reserved for the following:
Team Playing Staff and Management Match and Competition Officials Club Staff and volunteers transporting matchday equipment Members of the 1885 Suite  Sponsors Blue Badge Holders   If you have a blue badge or mobility issues please email the club secretary at secretary@buryfc.co.uk at least TWO days before the game.  Blue Badge holders shall be prioritised for a parking space.
  Entrance to the car park is strictly controlled and includes the areas within and in front of the fenced area.  Please contact the Club Secretary with any other related queries.
  There is on-street parking in the residential areas surrounding Gigg Lane, with supporters reminded to be respectful and considerate of the local residents at all times, as well as being mindful of and adhering to the parking permit measures in place in close proximity to the ground.
  Stadium Entry: Gates will open at 6:30pm.
  Our matchday volunteers will be on hand, both outside the turnstiles and inside the ground, to guide supporters to where they need to be. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask those who are there to help the day.
  Food / Drink: Our new catering partner, Quirky Catering, will be operating the kiosks this weekend and throughout the season, and are accessible for supporters under the stands. A selection of hot and cold snacks will be available. Alcohol will be sold, and can be consumed anywhere in the stand. Please respect the advice from stewards on managing this process on the day.
  Matchday Programme: You can purchase a programme online now, to collect at the merchandise stall tomorrow afternoon or head to the sellers in and around the ground ahead of the game at the price of £3.
  Pound for the Ground: Our ‘Pound for the Ground’ half-time raffle tickets will be on sale in and around the ground, £1 per entry. Sellers accept cash or card, with 40% of the total pot going to the winning ticket with results announced over the PA system and on the scoreboard.
  Keep #GiggGleaming: With so much work gone into Gigg Lane to get us to this point, we want to keep it that way and a lot of work goes into turning the ground around between games each weekend. We have a team of volunteers lined up to clean the stands following the game.
  With this in mind, we urge all supporters to make sure any rubbish is processed in the correct manner, using the available bins where necessary, or if possible please take any rubbish away with you.
  Designated Smoking Areas: Supporters are not allowed to smoke / vape anywhere within the stands at Gigg Lane. Designated areas are set aside to do this, follow guidance from stewards on this and only smoke / vape within these areas.
  #NonLeagueDogs: For now, dogs are NOT permitted in the ground.
