Objective achieved! We prepared for this game by bouncing back in style from the defeat at Lower Breck by beating Burscough 4-2 away. The first 45 minutes were probably the best we’ve played all season, even counting the stunning 8-0 defeat of Longridge Town. So we travel once again to Merseyside with heads held high.

But it was disappointing to present Burscough with a gift goal early in the second half, and after that it was a struggle. Quality told in the end, and overall it was another great day for us.

It was good to welcome forward Pat Jarrett back into the team for his first league start for the club, but sad to say farewell to experienced Lewis Alessandra who played his final game at the weekend.

If you hadn’t already seen, experienced midfielder Nicky Adams re-joined the club for a fourth spell over the weekend, and subject to paperwork being approved, he will be avaliable for selection this week.

Now it’s onward and upward as we begin a busy and demanding December placed third in the league and with games in hand. First call is at Litherland REMYCA. We beat them twice last season – 4-2 at home and 6-0 away. Either score would suit us this time round – it’s the points that matter. Come on you Shakers!!

Saturday’s highlights and interviews are available to watch below:
      In Opposition – Litherland REMYCA
We can expect a tough game at REMYCA, who are currently 19th in the league with 26 points from 23 matches. They’ve won two and lost three of their last six games, including a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of top-of-the-table Ramsbottom United.

The club’s goal is a mid-table position, and they have a clear policy of giving high-flying teams like the Shakers a thorough examination.

They greatly value their place in the NWC premiership, and after several seasons flirting with relegation appointed one of their own players – popular striker Colin McDonald – as manager. That was four years ago, they and he are still here, and last season finished 12th.

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting two football clubs from Chicago on behalf of FTI Sports Ltd – Lindenhurst Area Soccer Club and Chicago KICS Youth Soccer Club.

Hiring Gigg Lane for training sessions, the children loved playing on the pitch and watching from the stands the parents loved hearing the story of Bury’s return to football.

Following the session they flooded into the club shop to buy memorabilia of their trip from football tops and hoodies to pin badges and an abundance of our scarves and bobble hats to take back to Chicago for the winter.

In the days that followed they played fixtures vs our Under 13s, Under 12s and Under 10s A & B teams, with some of the games streamed across the pond!

Replays of these exhibition fixtures, can be watched here.

We are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Nicky Adams from Radcliffe, and with it Nicky starts a fourth spell at Gigg Lane.

The 38-year-old began his footballing career with the Shakers, after coming through the club’s youth setup in the early 2000s.

He made his first team debut in October 2005 in a 1-0 win against Darlington, in what was a debut not only for him but the first game in charge for the then manager, Chris Casper.

Nicky scored the only goal of the game, which ended up being the first of 14 in his first spell at the club.

Casper spoke highly of Adams after his debut: “I’m made up for young Nicky Adams, as he has really worked hard on his game. He’s run himself into the ground for the team, and he took the goal well.”
Adams signed for Leicester City in 2008 This kind of performance was typical of the player, both on and off the field. His character was infectious, resonating with those in the stands and in the changing room-a-like. His abilities were noticed by a host of clubs and his first spell at Gigg Lane came to a close with a move to League One-side Leicester City in 2008.

He made his first return in May 2014 following spells at Brentford, Rochdale, Crawley Town and Rotherham United. This second stint only lasted a season, but his first promotion as a Shaker came with it, earning a top-three spot on the last day of the 2014/15 season at Tranmere.

Adams’ third spell began in the summer of 2018 when he joined a newly-relegated League Two side under the stewardship of club legend Ryan Lowe.
Nicky was the captain, leading by example and despite fantastic displays on the pitch, and another promotion to League One, (again at Tranmere), turmoil off the pitch spiralled the Shakers supporters into despair.

We left the Football League in the summer of 2019 after 125 years of membership.

Nicky spoke out on social media about the behind the scenes issues (left), but this was unable to prevent the downturn in club’s plight, with all players and staff eventually leaving the club after pay had been withheld for months.

Moving on again, Nick headed back to Northampton for a second spell, before returning north to Boundary Park and Oldham Athletic. Recently he joined Radcliffe, and helped guide them to promotion last season as Boro hit the National League North for the first time.

He reached 100 appearances for Boro earlier this month, and has over 750 appearances across an extensive 22-year career to date.
To date Nicky has made 191 Bury appearances, scoring 19 goals. We are sure you will be looking forward to welcoming him back to Gigg Lane once again.

The agreement is subject to FA and league approval, with Nicky going into Dave McNabb’s squad this week once this has been confirmed.

Our trip to Burscough this afternoon will see the final appearance of Lewis Alessandra, as he confirms his retirement from football.

Lewis has decided to call time on his 17-year playing career, due to recurring injuries & work commitments.

The 35-year-old started out at grassroots side Roach Dynamos before heading to Oldham. He went onto play in the football league for Morecambe, Plymouth Argyle, Rochdale, Hartlepool, Notts County, Morecambe & Carlisle United before moving into non-league and playing for South Shields & Hyde United.

He signed for the Shakers in August, and has made 24 appearances for the club this season.

Lewis got on the scoresheet in two of our FA Cup ties earlier this season at Avro & Garforth.

Manager Dave McNabb said: “Lewis is a brilliant lad who has added so much both on the pitch and off it since he came to the club.

“I’m gutted he’s decided to call a day, on what has been a career that most people can only dream of but we’ve got to respect his decision and he leaves us with our best wishes.

“Lewis will always be welcome at Gigg Lane and I can’t thank him enough for everything he has done to help me and the club this season. Good luck Lew.”

We would like to place on record our thanks to Lewis for his commitment to the club, and we wish him all the best for the future after what has been an amazing football career.
