Message to supporters

As we approach the final match of the season, with promotion and a potential league title firmly within reach, excitement is understandably building across the club and fanbase. The support we’ve seen at Gigg Lane and away from home has been nothing short of outstanding and we thank each and every one of you for playing your part in what could be a historic moment for Bury Football Club.


However, with high emotions comes increased responsibility. We would like to remind all supporters that entering the field of play and the use of pyrotechnics (such as flares and smoke bombs) are strictly prohibited. These actions are against ground regulations and the law and can result in serious consequences for individuals and for the club.


In addition, it’s important to remember that Gigg Lane is home to a newly installed 3G playing surface. This pitch is a vital asset to both the club and the wider community, used by hundreds of players of all ages and abilities every week. Damage caused by pitch invasions or pyro can result in costly repairs and disruption to scheduled activity, including matches and training sessions. It is essential that we all take responsibility to protect this valuable asset.


Should we secure promotion, we want those celebrations to be safe, inclusive, and respectful – a proud moment for all generations of Bury fans to enjoy together. To do this, we ask everyone to remain in the stands at all times and celebrate responsibly.

Nicky Adams confirms retirement

Nicky Adams has announced his retirement from football.


Adams has had a 22-year football career and will hang up his boots at the end of the season to take up a full-time coaching role. 


He returned to Gigg Lane in December to take up a fourth stint with the club.


The 38-year-old began his footballing career with the Shakers, after coming through the club’s youth setup in the early 2000s.

He made his first team debut in October 2005 in a 1-0 win against Darlington, in what was a debut not only for him but the first game in charge for the then manager, Chris Casper.

Nicky scored the only goal of the game, which ended up being the first of 14 in his first spell at the club.


His abilities were noticed by a host of clubs and his first spell at Gigg Lane came to a close with a move to League One-side Leicester City in 2008.

He made his first return in May 2014 following spells at Brentford, Rochdale, Crawley Town and Rotherham United. This second stint only lasted a season, but his first promotion as a Shaker came with it, earning a top-three spot on the last day of the 2014/15 season at Tranmere.

Adams’ third spell began in the summer of 2018 when he joined a newly-relegated League Two side under the stewardship of club legend Ryan Lowe.


Nicky was the captain, leading by example and despite fantastic displays on the pitch, and another promotion to League One, (again at Tranmere), turmoil off the pitch spiralled the Shakers supporters into despair.


Moving on again, he headed back to Northampton for a second spell, before returning north to Boundary Park and Oldham Athletic. Then joining Radcliffe and helped guide them to promotion last season as Boro hit the National League North for the first time.

He reached 100 appearances for Boro before his departure in December.


Since joining the Shakers again, he’s made 17 appearances, taking his total to over 200 for the club.


Speaking to buryfc.co.uk, Adams said: “I think it’s perfect timing for me, I’m learning the coaching side of it. I’ve been doing that for the last few years, and I’ve got a big opportunity to go and do that full-time now.


“I came here at 16 years old; I’ve come back a few times now, I’ve played over 200 games for the football club, I don’t need to tell anyone what it means to me.


“I’ve had some unbelievable times here, and I’ll be forever grateful to this football club, which gave me the opportunity to go and be a professional footballer and go on the journey that I’ve been on. I’m forever grateful for that.”


Manager, Dave McNabb added: “I’m not really sure how to put into words the impact that Nicky has had on me and this group since he walked back through the door in December.


“His legendary status at this football club is well-known and documented. I had heard a lot about good things about his character and his personality through mutual friends and people within the game so I knew he was going to be a good lad and have a positive impact in the dressing room. Even with this knowledge, never did an expect to meet such an honest and caring man with enormous levels of integrity and with such high standard and principles.


“He’s a leader amongst men. When he talks, people listen. He gets the best out of others. He is trusted and respected by everyone. He drives positive relationships within the group. He is the glue that holds things together.


“I’m proud to have brought him back to HIS football club, I’m proud to have played a very small part in his illustrious career but most of all, I’m proud to be able to call him a friend.


“Good luck Nicky, you’re a legend.”

Fan remembrance

This last game of the season is to be dedicated to all Shakers who have passed away and, in particular, those who have left us most recently.


For the past two seasons we have dedicated part of the Remembrance Day event to those fans, however, we feel that, going forward we should celebrate the memory of our Shakers family as a unique event, so that we can fully acknowledge the history and contribution our fans, players, officials, volunteers and staff have made to our club.


Fans have been raising money to buy a commemorative wreath for the game which will then be placed in our Memorial Garden. Thank you to everyone who has donated. The surplus raised will be donated to Bury Hospice in memory of all past Shakers.


The last game in this season, our 140th anniversary year gives us an opportunity to not only look back on the year, but the proud history of Bury Football Club. We, and all those who have entered Gigg Lane before us, are part of the rich tapestry of Bury FC and, on Saturday, we will honour and celebrate their impact with words of thanks and commemoration followed by a minutes applause.


There are many who may not be with us in body today but they are always with us in spirit at our beloved Gigg Lane so let’s raise the roof with our applause and let the proud history of Bury FC ring out across the stadium and beyond.


The names of fans who have passed away since November 2023 will be scrolled onto the scoreboard and are remembered here.

Reaction: Aaron Chalmers Cheadle Town (N)

Bury won 2-0 over Cheadle Town at Broadhurst Park home of FC United as the Shakers look to close in on the title, Defender Aaron Chalmers spoke to the club after the game.


Aaron Chalmers: “It weren’t the best game, if I’m being honest. We struggled to play our usual game. Fair play to Cheadle, they played their game, they played out from the back constantly. It wasn’t the best of pitches, but it should be no excuse if they can play, we should be able to, but again, we’ve won ugly, 2-0, it doesn’t matter how it is. As long as we win, one more game to go and we’ll just keep doing the same.”


Aaron then spoke about on the Shakers achieving 14 consecutive wins “Yeah, immense. I’m absolutely over the moon for it. As a defender, mainly the clean sheet, that’s another one to the tally we’ve got already, but it’s just the consistency we’ve got in the team, the never-die attitude, the will to win, the will to run through brick walls for each other and just to never give up. It wasn’t the best game to play in, I don’t know about watching, but a win’s a win and it doesn’t matter how it comes at this time of the year, it’s vital to just keep going and we’ve got one more game to go and we’ll do everything we can to get that win.”


He then spoke about how tough it was to get goals today against Cheadle with him saying “Yeah, I think I said it a few weeks back at St Helens, when you play teams in this league who play against Bury, they give that extra percent, 10-20%. Back against Cheadle today, they played their football, they did well in times. First half I think they were the better team, even though we scored earlier. Second half, it was a little bit more like us, but we had to play in behind quite a lot to get them second balls. But yeah, anyone in this league is unpredictable, you don’t know who’s going to win, who’s going to draw, you never know what’s going to happen, that’s football, that’s why we play it. Unless you work hard and you take your chances, that’s what’s going to happen. It’s just very unpredictable, that’s what football is about and that’s why we love it.”


Aaron then gave his appreciation for the Bury faithful, with him saying “You can’t really put words into it. I had an interview with Mike Shearer’s podcast and said the reason why I joined was to play in front of thousands of fans every week. I’ve done it for the last 20 years of my career, barring two years ago, but when you sit and you’ve seen 3,000 of your home fans, you can’t really put it into words. It’s just one of those things, everyone knows in this league, Bury are massive and it was part of me joining, but standing there listening to some of the songs, I only live a stone’s throw away from here. It’s something special and you can see what it means to them. You play week in, week out, even at home or away, it’s only a few hundred people coming. It doesn’t matter; they’ve got the loyal supporters who will travel all over the country. We spoke last week; Michael and Rob came in the dressing room and spoke about the club’s history and how us as a football team are bringing it back to Bury and that’s all we can do. We can just play football and just strive for greatness, strive to be better, strive to be a better club, better players and just keep pushing because, like I said weeks ago, it’s the only way we’re going. We’re going up and we don’t want to stop anytime soon.”


To finish the interview Aaron looked ahead to next weeks season finale against Burscough, with him saying “Yes, of course I am. Considering I retired two years ago and then retired last year, I’ve played another year. My wife’s not going to be happy again if I try and do another year but it is what it is, it’s football and next week it can’t come quick enough. In this tier, I keep saying, we spoke about it a few weeks ago, you’ve never seen 5,000, 6,000, 7,000 fans and especially at this tier. The club shouldn’t be here in the first place of what happened a couple of years back but you have to start somewhere and we’re starting again and we’re going up and next week’s a phenomenal atmosphere in front of up to now 5,500. Let’s see if we can get to 7,000.”

Reaction: Dave McNabb Cheadle Town (N)

Bury won 2-0 over Cheadle Town in the penultimate game of the season, Manager Dave McNabb spoke to the club to give us his thoughts.


Dave McNabb: “It was a tough game, wasn’t it? I think obviously when you get to this stage of the season and the weather we’ve had over the last few weeks, the pitch is tough, it’s bobbly, it’s being prepared fairly well, I think they’ve worked night and day on it to try and get it the best they can, but it’s just not very conducive to playing the type of football that we wanted to play. And Cheadle, to be fair, I think they’re another side that does try to play, but it just made it a little bit more scrappy than we’d have liked. There are too many transitions, too many turnovers, but if you want to try and get promotions, then you’ve got to go out and do things when things get tough, and we’ve proved that today. I think they’ve probably had one shot on goal where they looked dangerous, so defensively we’ve been absolutely outstanding. We’re always going to criticise, because we want the best from the lads, so we’re always going to criticise the lack of control we had with the ball, but out of possession I thought we were outstanding, and like I said, they never caused us any problems. Decent Cheadle side, good Cheadle side, they were set up in a way that was tactically really strong, so overall really pleased. The noise in the fans, I’m sure you would have probably come on to it, but that today, that’s not Northwest Counties it’s not. If you can’t stand in front of that and just enjoy it, then you’re in the wrong sport.”


He then spoke about his unchanged eleven from the side that beat Padiham last week at Gigg Lane, with him saying “I think it was just deserved. Arguably the best performance of the season last week, tough circumstances, going into the game obviously on paper, playing another playoff team. I thought the lads were fantastic and they deserved a start. You’ve got players like Rusty [Stepans] coming back available, you’ve got players on the bench knocking on the door, Lewis [Byrne] has been fantastic, but that’s part and parcel of being a squad. When you perform like that, you expect to keep your shirt and it’s only fair that the lads did.”


He then added onto this by giving us and update on Reuben Jerome, he said “No, not at all. I think, again, it’s just getting really difficult now to pick a squad. Obviously, we picked up a couple of little niggles and knocks today, but it was just making sure that we had cover in every position. You’ve always got to try and plan for the worst-case scenario, a defender getting injured, a wing-back, whatever else. I think it was just making sure we had cover in all areas and, like I said, we’ll assess next week based on next week’s merits and how people train, so there’s no guarantee that the squad will stay the same.”


Dave then gave an update on both Cam Fogerty and Connor Pye with him saying “We’ll assess it in the week. I think Cam’s shoulders just popped out a little bit, probably one that will probably take two to three weeks in ordinary circumstances. Obviously, with it being the last game, it’s probably going to be a case of strap it up and carry on. Connor, a touch of cramp. He’s 21 years old and getting cramp, I’m not too sure I’m very happy with that, but look, he’s worked hard today and hasn’t got a lot of quality into him in terms of what to work with, but he hasn’t played as much recently as he would have liked to, so playing nearly 90 last week and obviously a big part today, so he’s just got a touch of cramp and it was a bit precautionary.”


Dave then also gave his plaudits to young Tyler James after the forward made it 5 goals in 2 games after scoring a brace today, he said “He’s a fantastic player. This is the reason why we wanted to bring him to the club. He was one of the players we were going to speak to in the summer. We didn’t think it was right at the time, but he’s got goals in him and he’s a very unassuming lad. He’s very quiet. He’s fitting straight away. It’s always tough when you move to a big club like that, especially when you’re a quiet lad and you’re not super experienced in non-league. Coming to a club like Bury, where you’ve got really established players, you’ve obviously got the weight and expectation of the club and the crowd. It can be difficult. It takes a bit of time to adjust, so I said to him all the time, just relax and just wait. Your chance will come and when it does, you’re good enough to take it and the last two games he’s proved that.”


He then also praised Goalkeeper Mitch Allen who was awarded the Northwest Counties Premier Division Goalkeeper of the month award, with him saying “Another clean sheet, that eight on the bounce. I mean, I don’t know what happened to his kicking today. He was their best player for spells. He’s a phenomenal goalkeeper. He’s had to deal with some challenges in terms of a bit of a back line that’s changed a couple of different shapes, different personnel for different reasons. I know we had a sticky spot in the middle of the season, but our confidence has never waved in, in one little, tiny bit. He was the best goalkeeper in the league above the last two seasons on the bounce, so there’s no doubt that his capabilities are going to go higher.”


To finish the interview Dave looked ahead to the final game of the season against Burscough, with him saying “It is, but it’s not a party. We’ve got to prep. We’ve got to go and win the game. I know that we’re pointing off, but we’re not going to be setting ourselves up to try and take a point. There’s no way. Burscough are a good side. They’ve got very experienced players down the spine of the team. They’ll be coming to try and finish the season on a high. They’ve had a few ups and downs this season, but they’re finishing really well. I think they’re second or third in the form table. So, they’re going to be coming, and look, they’re going to come and want to ruin our day because it puts them in the shot window and puts them in the manager’s plans for next season. They’re a good side. We need to be at our best to go, and we will be going out to try and win the game.”

“When we get promotion, this is what we’ll sing…We are Bury, we are Bury, we are…”


The words rang out at Gigg Lane on Saturday, and no-one could blame us for singing them.


We were playing like champions. We were winning our 13th match on the bounce. We were keeping our seventh successive clean sheet.


There were performances right through our team which could only be described as top class – especially Tyler James’s hat-trick against his former club.


As a result, on and off the pitch, it felt like we could finally start to think this is it. But it isn’t. We still have two games to play, and our focus is on Cheadle.


We’ll line up to face Cheadle Town at Broadhurst Park, the home of FC United of Manchester and the scene of ‘that” loss to last weeks visitors last season. Cheadle are a strong side, who set up to frustrate their opponents, and one that Dave and the lads will not be taking lightly.


Get down to Moston for this final away game of the season – louder and prouder than ever. It’s a long time since being part of it has been so exhilarating. Come on you Shakers!!!
In Opposition – Cheadle Town

Like us, the Cheshire club are in their second season in the Premier Division. They’re in 14th place, and have won only two and lost four of their last six games.

Both victories have been away from home, and the match against us might feel like an away game as Shakers fans pile into FC United’s ground in numbers.

We beat them 3-0 at Gigg Lane back in August, and did the double last term – 2-1 at home and 2-0 away.

Town started life as Grasmere Rovers in 1961 and changed their name when they joined the NWCFL in 1983. They ended last season in 13th position.
Admission & Tickets
Tickets are still on sale via Cheadle’s TicketSource platform, and we encourage everyone to purchase their in advance of the game. This will allow matchday turnstile operators to scan your tickets, and prevent unnecessary queues to allow everyone to enter the stadium ahead of kick-off.


All tickets issued will be unreserved, with access available to all areas of the ground upon entry. The ground will be open from 1:00pm, with early arrival suggested for those who wish to be seated in the 500 available seats. We would appreciate supporters showing courtesy to those with greater difficulty standing.


Tickets will be on sale until 1:00pm on the day of the game, so to guarantee entry make sure you purchase your ticket in advance.

FC United of Manchester have provided their stadium Travel Plan, which is accessed here. The car park at Broadhurst Park will be made available for officials, players, staff and for those with mobility issues. To contact about this, please email here.


Parking elsewhere is limited to the roadside along Lightbowne Road. Please do not park along St Mary’s Road or the streets accessed from there, which are to be saved for residents.


There are a number of public transport options including a local tram stop at Newton Heath & Moston (around a mile walk from the ground), train station at Moston (under a mile from the ground), as well as several bus services from Manchester which alight on St Mary’s Road close to the ground or along Moston Lane, which is a five minute walk away.
