FANS’ STORIES REQUIRED – ‘GOING TO THE MATCH’

The team at Bury Art Museum are asking for Bury FC fans to put pen to paper and write down your personal stories of why you support the Shakers.


How did you come to support the club?  Did your parents / grandparents support Bury? What was your first ever match?  What are your best memories of supporting the Shakers?  What does the club mean to you and your family?
 
These memories and stories  will be included in a booklet  which will be available for everyone to read at an exhibition “Going To The Match” which will be held at the Art Museum from 4th October 2024 through to 1st March 2025. 
 
If you would like to take part, please email your stories (no longer than 350 words) in Word format before the deadline of 26th August to artgallery@bury.gov.uk    
 
The focal point of the exhibition will be LS Lowry’s masterpiece ‘Going to the Match’, the 1953 painting which depicts fans arriving for a Bolton Wanderers game at Burnden Park.
 
The exhibition will focus on football fans and will include iconic photographs of football fans from various north-west clubs, including Bury, Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool, Oldham and Bolton.  There will also be various interesting Bury FC historical and fan-related items on display at the exhibition.

Squad Update

Ahead of tonight’s game away at Abbey Hey, Dave McNabb has issued the following update on a number of players:

Brad Carroll


We’ve been dealt some bad news in the last week with the scan results coming back on Brad knee injury confirming that he has a full rupture of his PCL and is likely to be out for up to 6 months. Brad has been brilliant since he came to the club, fantastic performances on the pitch and a player who is highly respected and well thought of in the changing room.


Morgan Homson-Smith


Morgan is out for another two weeks with an ankle injury. After a very impressive start to preseason Morgan was really unlucky to pick up the knock at Atherton LR in early July. I’m sure once he’s cleared to play he will get back to full speed pretty quickly.

Jack Dunn


Jack has had a tough couple of years with a serious knee injury. As expected he will pick up a few niggles and strains as he makes his way back to full fitness. Jack has been back into training this week and should be available for selection in the next week or two. We know we will have to be patient with Jack but it will certainly be worth it when we get him 100% fit and sharp.


Iyrwah Gooden


Iyrwah is unavailable for the next 10 days. Another who’s had a brilliant start to his life as a shaker and will no doubt be missed over the next few games.


Bryan Ly

Bryan will be back into full contact training this week and available for selection next weekend following a concussion. It’s been extremely frustrating to lose Bryan but there’s nothing more important than the health and wellbeing of our players and it’s a very long season ahead.


Connor Comber


Connor has missed a large portion of preseason due to holidays and injury. Connor trained a couple of weeks ago and managed to play in the final weekend of preseason away to Nelson but unfortunately has picked up another injury since. It’s nothing serious but painful impact injury on his knee.

Match Info: Abbey Hey (A), Tues 13th Aug, 7.45pm KO

The Shakers have an early opportunity to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointing and rather tame home draw against Irlam when they travel to Gorton to face Abbey Hey on Tuesday.

Everyone around Gigg Lane had high hopes for lift-off in the first game on Bury’s new pitch. The Blue and White Army in the South Stand were in good voice, but it turned out to be a frustrating afternoon for them and for manager Dave McNabb.

Bury struggled in a sluggish first half in which they went behind twice, but managed to pull back to 2-2 with a Stepan penalty – literally the last kick of the half.


The performance improved after the interval, but not enough to give them victory which would have put them into the top three in the league.

Still undefeated, the Shakers now face Abbey Hey. They were promoted from the NWCFL First Division South via last season’s play-offs. But they’ve had a disappointing start to their season.
 
    In Opposition – Abbey Hey
Abbey Hey also had a 2-2 home draw on Saturday – against AFC Liverpool, who had beaten them 3-0 on Merseyside just eight days earlier. These results, along with two 3-0 defeats away from home by FC St Helens and Ramsbottom United, have left them in 22nd position in the league.
 
Like so many football clubs, Abbey started life – way back in 1902 – in a church Sunday league, and over the years played in various local leagues. They were given a big boost in the 1960 by an influx of good players from a works team which had been disbanded.
 
After playing for many years on grounds which belonged to other people, they finally achieved some security – with the help of the City Council – by acquiring their own home just 40 years ago. They joined the North West Counties Division II in 1998.

Driving: M60 to junction 24, take A57 to Manchester City Centre for approx. 1 mile, at first set of major traffic lights (McDonalds on right) pass through for approx. 300 yards, turn left immediatley before overhead railway bridge (A.H.F.C. sign) into Woodland Avenue. Take first right, pass under railway bridge, turn first left into Goredale Avenue.

Welcome to Bury: Cameron Fogerty

We are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Cameron Fogerty

The 20-year-old joins the club after leaving NPL side Witton Albion.

He made 78 appearances for the club.

Prior to his time in Cheshire, he came through the academy at Hyde United.

Dave McNabb commented on the latest addition:

“Cam is a an all action midfielder who has a bit of everything. He’s aggressive, tenacious and has a brilliant engine. He’s technically excellent and always wants to get on the ball and play forward.
“Another player I’ve tried to sign on a number of occasions I’m really excited to work with Cam and help him continue to develop.”

Welcome to Bury: Lewis Alessandra

We are delighted to announce the signing of forward Lewis Alessandara

The 35-year-old joins the club after playing for Hyde United this season.

Born in Heywood, he came through the ranks of local side Roach Dynamos before joining Oldham Athletic.

Morecambe, Plymouth, Notts County & Carlisle United are also amongst his former clubs.

He made 43 appearances for Hyde United last season in the Northern Premier League.

Manager, Dave McNabb commented on the signing:

“Lewis Alessandra is a player who I’m sure many of the fans will be familiar with having spent much of his career in the football league. Lewis has had an unbelievable career and will add some much needed experience to the squad.

“A forward player who is extremely intelligent with his movement and a real eye for goal. I was very impressed with his hunger and desire to play for Bury and fulfil an ambition that almost came true around 9 years ago.”
