“When we get promotion, this is what we’ll sing…We are Bury, we are Bury, we are…” The words rang out at Gigg Lane on Saturday, and no-one could blame us for singing them. We were playing like champions. We were winning our 13th match on the bounce. We were keeping our seventh successive clean sheet. There were performances right through our team which could only be described as top class – especially Tyler James’s hat-trick against his former club. As a result, on and off the pitch, it felt like we could finally start to think this is it. But it isn’t. We still have two games to play, and our focus is on Cheadle. We’ll line up to face Cheadle Town at Broadhurst Park, the home of FC United of Manchester and the scene of ‘that” loss to last weeks visitors last season. Cheadle are a strong side, who set up to frustrate their opponents, and one that Dave and the lads will not be taking lightly. Get down to Moston for this final away game of the season – louder and prouder than ever. It’s a long time since being part of it has been so exhilarating. Come on you Shakers!!! In Opposition – Cheadle Town Like us, the Cheshire club are in their second season in the Premier Division. They’re in 14th place, and have won only two and lost four of their last six games. Both victories have been away from home, and the match against us might feel like an away game as Shakers fans pile into FC United’s ground in numbers. We beat them 3-0 at Gigg Lane back in August, and did the double last term – 2-1 at home and 2-0 away. Town started life as Grasmere Rovers in 1961 and changed their name when they joined the NWCFL in 1983. They ended last season in 13th position. Bury won 4-0 over Padiham taking the points total to 103 as the Shakers looked to close in on a title victory Bryan Ly and Hatrick hero Tyler James spoke to the club to give us their thoughts. Tyler James started the interview by speaking about his hatrick with him saying “It was a special moment. I saw the chances and took them. I got the win, so it’s all good from there.” Further adding “I loved the moment. I’ve seen the fans cheer and smile. It was a special moment for me” Bryan then gave his thoughts on the game, with him saying “We knew coming into the game that we had to win. Obviously, everyone was refreshing Twitter last night about the lower breck game, but when we come into the changing room, that’s all forgotten, and we know the quality that we have in the changing room. We knew that if we started off really quicker, then we’d blow them away and that’s what we’ve done. We’ve blown away by four goals. Every time they had the ball; we were on top of them. I just think we showed our class today.” Bryan then spoke about the tactical change to two 10s for this game, he said “We’ve adapted really well in training. Obviously, me and Tyler, we’ve played with each other previously a few years ago and we know each other’s game. When the gaffer told me I was back starting today and I knew I was in the 10 with Tyler, I knew it was just going to work. Obviously, you’ve seen it there. It was just fluid football. We were just bopping it side to side, and we took our chances. Well, he took his chances and bringing a match ball home. So, yes, that was good.” Tyler then gave his thoughts on the system, he said “Yes, it’s good because different positions bring different opportunities. I like playing with Bryan because we both know what we do and we both bounce off each other, even in training, just passing around. So, when we came on here, we knew what we were going to do and pass him off the park.” Bryan and Tyler then both looked ahead to next weeks clash against Cheadle with them saying. Bryan Ly: “Yes, no game’s going to be a pushover. We’ve got two games left. Obviously, if you told us at the start of the season that we had two games left to win a title, you’d say that. So, we’re just going to take it game by game like we have been doing all season and turn up Saturday, not expecting to just brush them over. We know we’ll be in for a game and hopefully, obviously, do what we’ve done today and blow them off the park.” Tyler James: “Get behind us, support us as much as you can because support means a lot. Bury won 4-0 over Padiham with a dominant display as they looked to close out the season, Manager Dave McNabb spoke to the club to give us his thoughts on the game. Dave McNabb: “I think so. Probably somewhat up in one way, which is outstanding. Everything, the warm-up was the best we’ve had all season. The intensity at the start of the game, first half, brilliant. 2-0, blew them away. Could have been more, should have been more. Second half, even better and then you add in the noise coming from the sidelines. It was actually enjoyable listening to them. It’s a shame that the game was going on at times because it was just so intimidating. It’s so intimidating. Look, them being our 12th man at times, got us over the line in tough games. Today was one that he could probably enjoy a little bit more in terms of the performance and the results. We haven’t done anything yet. We haven’t achieved what we set out to. We’ve got two big games, and we need to go and try and win both of them. Dave then spoke through the two changes to the starting 11 with Bryan Ly and Connor Pye coming into the 11, he said “Obviously, we know Rusty’s [Stepans] picked up a bit of a hamstring injury last week, so he wasn’t available for selection today. So, Conor’s been chomping at the bit really to get in. He’s been a little bit unlucky that Rusty’s been playing so well. So that was a no-brainer and then the second one, we just felt that having a different type of movement and different options from the top line in terms of the way that they set up. So, we’ve done our homework on Paddy for today. Look, it worked. Bryans again, he’s had a tough spell in terms of form, had a bit of a drop in form. But form’s temporary and class is permanent, as they say. So, he’s worked hard the last few weeks. When he’s come off the bench, he’s made big impacts. And look, he deserves his chance, and he’s took it today.” Dave then spoke about his tactical changes throughout the season with him saying “Yes, so I think it’s about having the fundamentals in place and the philosophy, like you said. We wanted to try and make sure we played a little bit more than what we had done for the spell. I think we’ve been solid. We’ve almost made sure that the back line was defensively solid and then tried to work our way forward. So I think you’re starting to see some of that now. In terms of two number 10s, two number 9s, they’ve got the freedom to play rotations. So there was no set formation when we set it up today. It was around having the back line set, the midfield set, and the rest. Go on and express yourself and enjoy yourselves. Attacking flexibility is something that we’ve seen all season in terms of players in different positions.” Dave then spoke about the importance of having the full squad as they head into the final games “It’s massive. You can’t win things. You can’t compete at the top of a league with 11 good players. You do need that squad of 17 and 18. That’s what we’ve been fortunate enough to have here. The lads have bought into it, and I think that’s why you’re seeing spells where whether you’re talking about Tyler [James], whether you’re talking about Reece [Kendall] at times, Josh Gregory, Bryan Ly, they’ve all spent time on the bench. They’ve all spent periods on the bench where the forms dropped and whatever, but they stayed bought into it. They stayed working hard. They’ve been listening. Then sooner or later, you get your chance, and then it’s down to you to take it and look at the squad and the togetherness in the group just through the roof at the minute. We asked them today to be brave. We asked them to go and be brave and enjoy themselves, and I think that’s got to be the message for next week.” Dave then spoke about the return of Will Callaghan to the side with him saying “We’ve been watching Will from afar. He’s been playing really, really well, obviously with Rusty being injured and unavailable. We need to make sure we’ve got options on that side of the pitch. Connor hasn’t played as much as he’d like, as we said before, so we’re just worried about whether he’ll be able to get through the 90, but Connor was outstanding, and Will was really good when he came on as well.” Dave then finally looked ahead to next weeks clash with Cheadle away at FC United “I think we’ve got to go and win the game next week and put ourselves in a really good position. The full focus this week is going to be on a really tough game. It’s an away game, neutral, whatever you want to call it. Cheadle have got the way that he sets them up tactically. They’ve got a way of playing that’s quite awkward and quite difficult to adapt to, so they’ve definitely got dangerous players. We just need to make sure that we’re up forward and make sure we’re planned and prepped and ready to go, and if we play like we do today, no-one’s going to stop us.” View the full article

PERFECT PITCH is a new collaboration between Walk the Plank and English National Opera – a space where football and opera collide. An 8-week programme of community connection and workshops, some with Bury FC fans at Gigg Lane, culminated last week during the match between Bury v Squires Gate, with an operatic and football chant try out from the terraces, and a half time performance. The half time performance featured ENO soprano Carrie-Ann Williams, and baritone Patrick Keefe, accompanied by the PERFECT PITCH choir and the orchestra of English National Opera. The choir performed a version of the Toreador song, from the opera Carmen, with new words developed by the Bury fans during the workshops. The combined choir of singers and football fans of 115 included Bury FC and Manchester Laces Fans, Bridgewater Hall Singers, Bury Fire Choir, Pop Vox Choir and Wigan Choral Society. Lauren Monaghan-Pisano from English National Opera said, “It has been a joy to get stuck into our first programme delivered in Greater Manchester with brilliant partners Walk the Plank, working closely with football clubs and singing groups to build our PERFECT PITCH choir. Shakers.. there are only 3 games to go! The final month of the season starts now As this Saturday we play host to Padiham. We need you down in numbers, loud and proud! Our run of 12 successive victories, along with clean sheets in every one of our last six matches has been superb. But on their own they win us nothing. The only way we can be sure of that league title is to win every match. If you’ve been to Gigg Lane on a match day, you know what a fantastic atmosphere there is. If you haven’t, just come and sample it. Unlike last weekend, there won’t be any opera singers or choirs, but the atmosphere In the ground keeps getting better and better. With all that support, it must be very difficult to play against the Shakers at Gigg Lane. But Padiham are having a good season and will be difficult to beat. They’re currently 4th in the table and aiming for the best finish they can muster. So be there and get behind the lads. Be louder than ever and prouder than ever. In Opposition – Padiham Padiham won the NWCFL Premier Division title in 2013 and had three seasons in the Northern Premier League. They’ve improved enormously since we beat them 5-1 at the Ruby Civil Arena back in July and have lost only seven out of 43 matches. They also have a long and proud history, dating back to 1878, and were among the top clubs in Lancashire for 10 years. But that era ended when the paying of players was legalised and the Football League formed. Bury won 3-0 over relegation battlers Squires Gate as the Shakers reached centurion status in their title fight, Rustam Stepans and Aiden Walker both spoke to the club to give us their thoughts on the game. Rustam Stepans: “Yeah, I think it was a comfortable game to be fair, I think we moved the ball really well. We worked in on Thursday for moving the play, getting out wide, if there’s nothing on, coming back and back out wide again. So, yeah, really happy with the performance.” Aiden Walker added onto this by giving us his thoughts on the game he said “Yeah, no, it’s massive. I think that’s six clean sheets now on the balance, so it’s always good to keep solid. I don’t think we looked like conceding much today. You know, they had two big lads up top who, they held it up well to be fair, but I think we dealt with it, we didn’t really look for it and we were just more being good on the ball, moving the ball side to side while building play up from the back. I don’t think Mitch [Allen] had a say to me, did he? No, I don’t think he did, no.” Rusty then spoke about whether he thought the game would play out exactly as it did “I think some of the lads were a bit nervous and obviously Squires gate, I know what they had to do. I think they came up with the game plan, but I don’t think it worked out for them. I think we were just superior towards them, you know, so yeah, it was good.” They then spoke about the need to focus as they enter the last three games, they said “Yeah, no, that’s it. We know win three games, win the league. We’ve seen a lot of people be focused on games later on, but we know we’re capable of winning three games, win the league, so that’s it really.” Rustam the ended the interview by giving a message to the fans he said, “No, just I know how happy yous are when I’m doing my little celebration or whatever. Bury came out triumphant after a 3-0 victory over Squires Gate, Manager Dave McNabb gave us his thoughts on the game. Dave McNabb: “Yeah, I think so. I thought we kept the ball really well, looked a little bit more like us today in terms of some of the patterns of play and a little bit better in possession. A bit disappointing we maybe didn’t take one or two of the chances, particularly first half, but second half I thought we just turned the screw a little bit more and we just kept them penned in. It was, like you said, a really professional performance, quite comfortable. Could have been a little bit more, but we’ll take the 3-0 and we’ll move on for next week.” Dave then spoke about how important it is to keep the defence tight knit in this part of the season, he said “t’s been massive. I think obviously if you look back through the season, the issue or some of the challenges we’ve had have never been around scoring goals. I think we’ve scored 121 league goals and 145, 150 whatever goals in total, so it’s not putting the ball in the back of the net that’s been the problem, largely. Although the last few weeks we haven’t looked as good in front of goal, but the six clean sheets is massive. You’ve got to build on defensive performances, and I think they don’t just come from the back line, the goalkeeper, they come from all over the pitch. I think our pressing today was much better, still not perfect, still not quite right, but we start from the front.” He then spoke about where he sees improvement would be needed, with him saying “I think we’ve got to improve all over. Obviously, the standards that me and the staff drive and the standards that the players drive themselves on, I don’t think we got out of third gear today. I thought we showed some really good spells and some spells where we were a little bit sloppy and turned the ball over too many times, but next week it’s going to be an unbelievably tough game. Padiham are absolutely flying at the minute, I think they’re fourth, depending on the results today. Yeah, really good side, we played really well against them early in the season and beat them at their place, but I think they’re a much better side now than what they were, so it’s going to be a tough game and we’ve got to make sure we prepare right for it and go into it and hopefully try and get the three points.” Dave then provided an update on Rustam Stepans after the Latvian was subbed off with an injury after assisting Bryan Ly with the 3rd, he said “Yeah, it was just a slight strain. I think he should probably be alright for next week, so we just need to try and get some tests done tomorrow. Obviously, it’s difficult now just after the game, but yeah, he’s obviously gutted a little bit, but we’ll do everything we can to get him back.” Dave then spoke about whether he’s keeping an eye on Lower Brecks results as they play later tonight with him saying “Yeah, I mean obviously we’ll watch the games, it’s one of those things I think obviously when you get to the stage and see, we’ll look around at all the results, but it’s just more around seeing what’s going on. I think we know what we need to do and that’s the most important thing, that’s been the message and it’s been consistent to the players as soon as we’ve got our noses in front. We said probably back end October time that we need to be in with the pack, we need to be within three points, up or down, going into the new year and then when we start playing one game a week you’ll see us play better stuff, more improved both defensively and going forward and I think we’ve done that, we’ve got our noses in front and then it just becomes about us then. So we just need to take it one game at a time, I know it’s a cliche, but the only important game we’ve got now is next week against Padiham.” View the full article

We’re back home after a three-week break, after wrapping up two amazing away wins in St Helens. Now, we’re all set to keep our winning streak going and make it 12 on the bounce. We want to give a big shoutout to the fans who made the trip down the M62 two weekends in a row to cheer on the Shakers. You guys were incredible, creating that atmosphere that really pumps up the lads on the pitch! A win would really crank up the pressure on our promotion rivals, Lower Breck, as they face FC Isle of Man in Douglas in the late Saturday evening kick off, we’ll be streaming the game live in Starkies from 6pm. So, get down to Gigg, be loud, be proud and roar us on to another victory and let’s make up for that frustrating 4-4 draw in our first league game of the year. An away victory over FC Isle of Man on March 8th gave their fans a glimmer of hope, but the facts stare them in the face. Over the season so far, Gate have collected only 28 points from 42 matches, leaving them at the bottom of the table. That win in Douglas was the only one in their last six games, along with two draws and three defeats. But Gate are led by a shrewd manager in Luke Evans, who’s been at the Brian Addison Stadium since 2019. They’ll be well organised and hard to break down. Starkies BarBefore kick-off: Starkies will be open at the normal time of 12.30pm for supporters to access from the Manchester Road End entrance before kick-off. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis up to capacity, which will be managed on the door. Supporters will only be able to gain entry by presenting their online ticket purchased in advance, and no re-entry will be allowed once supporters leave to take their seat ahead of kick-off. Starkies Pass ticket holders will be permitted access at any time in line with their purchase. During the game: After kick-off, the bar can be accessed by anyone situated in the Main Stand (via the door linked to the concourse) or in the South Stand (via the front of the Manchester Road End). The bar is open throughout the game, including at half-time. Post-match: Starkies will be open to all, again up to capacity, with last orders at 9:30pm.
