  6. After beating Gainsborough Trinity on penalties last Saturday, The Shakers turn their attention to an FA Cup Third Qualifying Round fixture against Bromsgrove Sporting. Anthony Johnson’s side will be hoping to make it three for three this weekend after beating Workington and Gainsborough in successive cup fixtures. With another three goals scored on Saturday, Bury’s goal tally this season stands at 35, averaging nearly 4 goals a game at home. Bromsgrove Sporting, who play in the Southern League Premier Division Central, visit Gigg Lane off the back of a midweek draw against Leamington. In Opposition – Bromsgrove Sporting Established in 2009, Bromsgrove Sporting was formed in response to the town’s club, Bromsgrove Rovers, being left without a senior non-league football club after financial collapse. The club picked up their first piece of silverware in the Smedley Crooke Memorial Challenge Cup in the 2013/14 season, and earned promotion to the Midland Football League Division One with 104 points three seasons later. In 2024, the club secured Step 3 status and recorded their highest ever league and points tally at that level. Bromsgrove Sporting’s ownership model doesn’t allow one individual to hold more than 10% of the club, reflecting the previous club’s storied history of financial collapse. 14. Late drama at Gigg Lane saw Bury have to overcome visitors Gainsborough Trinity via the penalty shootout after a 3-1 lead turned into a 3-3 draw during second half stoppage time. Anthony Johnson making good on his promise to field fringe players in the FA Trophy made six changes from the win against Workington. Among the changes was new signing Daniel Adshead who made his debut while Liam Gould and Murat Aydogan from the Under21s made the bench. Playing in a different shape and with different personnel it took Bury a while to find their feet. Luca Navarro had the best early chance when his shot beat keeper David Robson but was cleared off the line. While Gainsborough found themselves with the ball quite often they offered little going forward, Mitch Allen only required to make a couple of routine saves. Bury took the lead as Luca Navarro bounded down the left and sent in a cross to Anthony Dudley to force home the opener. It was a first senior Bury goal for the former Bury youth player. Dudley nearly had a second as Bailey Sloane’s super forward ball found James Melhado, his cross reached Dudley at full stretch but he could only put it into the side netting. After the break Bury were lackadaisical and allowed Gainsborough to claim a foothold in the match, a Javelle Clarke shot was blazed over the bar. Against the run of play Bury claimed a second. Luca Navarro afforded too much time and space cut inside and shot from outside the box to the far post beyond the reach of Robson. The visitors never stopped looking to get back into the match. Fraser Preston had a shot tipped over by Mitch Allen before a scramble in the Bury box that could have gone anywhere was barely cleared by an under pressure Shakers defence. Things came to a head when the Holy Blues were awarded a penalty. Mitch Allen got a hand to the spot kick but Lewis Butroid was not to be denied. The match was on a knife’s edge, Trinity’s Callum Brown saw a shot saved well by Allen while at the other end Rustam Stepans hit the bar with a long range blast. First team regulars in Owen Robinson and Kai Evans were brought on and Bury found another gear. An Evans free kick spun wide of the far post while Robinson forced a good save from the keeper to force a corner. In the 88th minute Kai Evans taking a corner kick launched an inswinger that beat Robson and found the far corner of the net. Evans’ eighth goal in the month of September. With 90 seconds of stoppage time left Bury were 3-1 up and cruising. A defensive mix up allowed Aaron Simpson to claim what appeared to be a consolation. Gainsborough never gave up and Bury could not keep the ball out of their box. When a free kick was cleared only as far as Ronnie Kokkinos the Gainsborough debutant slammed a shot into the bottom corner to equalise and force the penalty shootout. As in the match itself Bury had the penalty shootout well in hand but couldn’t finish the tie off. Owen Robinson, Anthony Dudley, Bailey Sloane and George Glendon had all put their efforts away while three of the Gainsborough players had scored theirs, Theo Williams had seen his penalty saved by Allen. It fell to Kai Evans to score the last kick and win the day but Robson saved the centrally placed attempt. Melhado scored his penalty to extend sudden death into a second round. Mitch Allen saved his second penalty, this time against the scorer of the third goal Kokkinos, allowing Connor Pye with a smoothly taken spot kick to at last put the result to bed 6-5 on penalties. 15. Bury Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of midfielder Daniel Adshead. The 25-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Gigg Lane, having played in the EFL and National League during a career which began with Rochdale. Adshead made his first-team debut for Dale as a teenager, going on to make 25 appearances before earning a move to Norwich City in 2019 for £750,000. The midfielder spent time on loan with Dutch side SC Telstar, as well as Gillingham and AFC Fylde, before making a permanent move to Cheltenham Town. Most recently, Adshead has featured in the National League with Boston United. Along the way, he has also represented England at Under-18 and Under-19 level, scoring on his debut for both age groups. Speaking on his latest addition, Jonno said: “Dan has been training with us for the last few weeks. He has got a brilliant pedigree in the game and has played at a good level. Today presents a great opportunity for us to have a really good look at him in a competitive fixture with the hope of securing him on something longer term.” Daniel joins the club on non-contract terms and is available for selection for this afternoon’s FA Trophy tie against Gainsborough Trinity. Anthony Johnson’s side have been in fine home form of late, scoring seventeen gals in three consecutive games at Gigg Lane and conceding only one. The sides have met once this season, where Bury snatched a late winner courtesy of Bailey Sloane to claim our first away win of the season. Gainsborough Trinity sit only three points behind Bury in the league, having won 3-0 against Leamington last time out. In Opposition – Gainsborough Trinity Gainsborough Trinity were founded in 1873, becoming members of the Football League in 1893 and sitting in the second division until 1912. 17. Bury booked their spot in the next round of the FA Cup following a convincing 5-1 win over in form Workington at Gigg Lane. A brace apiece from Kai Evans and Mo Touray and a late goal from Rustam Stepans overturned an early Workington lead. Having won 8-0 in their previous round of the cup the Shakers looked to start strongly in this match as well. Owen Robinson had an early shot deflected away for a corner while a Kai Evans cross, headed on by Connor Pye was blazed over by George Glendon from a good position. Mo Touray and Evans both saw shots saved by Reds keeper Alex Mitchell while a heavily marked Glendon squeezed off a shot that went just wide. Against the run of play it was the away side that took the lead. A corner swung into the box left goalkeeper Mitch Allen in no man’s land. Failing to come out and claim the ball allowed Reds fullback Joe Grayson to volley home the opener. The match was a far more open contest than Bury have faced for a while and also quite physical. Two Workington players were substituted before the break with injuries while Connor Pye was replaced by Rustam Stepans. Stepans nearly made an immediate impact with a turn and shot that was just dragged wide. Reds substitute Jake Allen saw a shot saved by Mitch Allen and later hit the post from a free kick. At the other end Kai Evans had a shot palmed away by the Workington keeper while Glendon was denied by a last ditch block in the box. With halftime approaching Evans made sure Bury would not be trailing. Surging forward from the left wing and allowed into the box he tested Mitchell in the Workington goal with a shot to the near post and beat him to claim an equaliser. From there Bury never looked back. Evans nearly claimed a second immediately teaming up with Leo Graham to win the ball but curled a shot wide of the far post. Evans then gave Bury the lead in first half stoppage time. Mo Touray held the ball up brilliantly and set Evans free into the box. He was hacked down and the referee pointed to the spot. Evans took the penalty himself sending Mitchell the wrong way. After the break Bury looked the more likely to score with neat interplay with Robinson and Touray unlocking the visiting defence while Robinson set up Graham with a chance but the midfielder cleared the crossbar with his effort. Workington still only trailed by one and following a poor defensive header Luke Hunter nearly scored but was denied by a great save by Allen. The Shakers couldn’t be denied forever and got the goal they deserved. Robinson laying the ball off to Touray who switched onto his left and placed a curled effort into the top corner to extend Bury’s lead. Touray nearly scored another straight away as Evans slipped him the ball, his first time shot hit the post before Mitchell could claim the rebound. Man of the match Touray wasn’t to be denied again and seized upon a loose ball from lax Workington defending. From the edge of the box he sent another shot into the top corner to put the result beyond a doubt. Back in their comfort zone the Shakers pushed for more. An Anthony Dudley cross was spun wide by Graham while substitute Luca Navarro shot to the near post forcing a good save from the keeper when Touray was open for a chance to claim a hat-trick. Navarro came closer with a free kick that struck the far post with the keeper beaten. Bury completed a strong performance with another goal. Stepans sending a great cross-field ball to James Melhado. The substitute held the ball up well before laying it back to Stepans who arrived to finish into the bottom corner for his first of the season. View lineups and more in our match centre.
