Staff Appointment Update

We are very pleased to announce two appointments of staff on a full-time permanent basis.

Casey Lynchey will take up the role of Head of Operations immediately.  Casey stepped into this role on an interim basis in November 2024, combining it with her existing role of Community Development Officer. 

Casey has introduced some excellent initiatives whilst in the role on an interim basis and has been instrumental in community engagement and ensuring the smooth running of events on and off the pitch. 

Casey’s energy, enthusiasm and dedication makes her an excellent fit for the club moving forward and we are delighted to be retaining her as a permanent member of staff. 

Her role will continue to incorporate an element of community development although additional resource will be recruited to this area in due course.


Chris Watts will take up the role of Commercial Manager in mid-April.  Chris is already well known as the club’s matchday analyst working with Dave McNabb and the coaching staff and he proved to be the outstanding candidate for the Commercial Manager position following a thorough recruitment process, particularly impressing at the interview stage. 

Chris will be fundamental to generating revenue through advertising and sponsorship by attracting new business through the club’s Partner Programme and engaging with existing stakeholders.

Chris will also provide an element of the additional resource required on the community development aspect. 

We are delighted to welcome Chris as a permanent member of staff and look forward to working with him.

Reaction: Aaron Chalmers FC St Helens (A)

Bury won 1-0 this afternoon away at FC St Helens, Defender Aaron Chalmers spoke to the club to give us his thoughts on the game.


Aaron Chalmers: “Yeah, very tough. The pitch didn’t help us at all, to be fair. You can’t really play football on that pitch. But this time of the season, it’s not about the performances, it’s more about just the results. We’ve come away with 1-0, the Keep have made three or four top-class saves, to be fair. So, could have been more, should have been, but 1-0 will take it and move on to next week.”


He then spoke about what its like being back in the starting 11 for the first time since Christmas, he said: “Yeah, obviously, I was away for two weeks when I got married and on my honeymoon. I had a little niggle last week that wasn’t nothing serious. Obviously, I got involved today, I was lucky enough to start. But yeah, the squad we’ve got, even if one of us is injured, one of us has niggles or suspension, there’s a full 18 to 20 lads who are more than comfortable to cover any position that we’ve got. We’ve got two or three lads in every position. So yeah, if I play or I don’t play, I’m just here to support. I’d rather play and sit on the bench because I’m not the best person to sit and watch. But yeah, we’ll get on with it and whatever happens, happens. But yeah, I’m well happy to play.”


Aaron then spoke about the squad and what its like playing in a back 3 “Yeah, we’ve adapted to be fair. When I went away, like I said, we adapted and went to a three in the back, maybe conceding a bit too many goals than we’d like to. We’ve gone to a three and I thought we’ve been comfortable to be fair. We’ve had one or two scares here and there. Obviously, I wasn’t here last week at Barnoldswick. I think the three at the back gives us more defensive cover. I do like to command and boss my players about, so it gives me the chance to do that. But I think with the solid three at the back, it gives us a bit more licence to use Russie as a left wing-back and Beto to get forward more, to join in to them forward players, as Cam’s been doing very well in the ten and Lewis and DJ do what they do anyway. So, I think going forward, we’re pretty solid with the three. If it’s me playing Reece [Kendall], Aidan [Walker], Louis [Jeanne], Gaz [Peet] when he’s in, I think we’re very comfortable and we can adapt. If it’s not working as a three, we can jump to a four. It’s not really a problem; we’ve worked on it in training. Everything comes pretty easy to us at the minute. So, yeah, a three at the minute, maybe a four next week, who knows?”


He then spoke about keeping another clean sheet this season “Yeah, of course. A clean sheet to a defender is like scoring a goal for a striker. That’s what we value. Our priorities are keeping clean sheets, especially as Mitch has done. Not just the back three, to be fair. No, the back four, five, six-ish. But today, we’ve kept another clean sheet, but it’s come working from the front, from stopping them long balls to the big nine, pressuring constantly, never letting them have a second on the ball. But in this league, clean sheets in this team will win all day. We’ll have 10, 12 to 15 chances a game. We’ll score three or four. Not today, because the keeper’s done some great saves, but yeah, clean sheets for us as defenders are pretty much everything we ask for.”


Aaron then gave us his thoughts on todays opposition, he said “They’ve got people who are good at what they do. They’re very direct. They play to the nine, they play off him, they’ve got runs in behind. And when you give them time, they do try and pick that pass out and try and play that ball in behind. But I thought we nullified it today. I thought we were very, very organised in the back as a three, then as a five and Bobby sitting. I thought Josh Greggory was different class again. Yeah, he’s got to pop the pitch and possibly should have scored. But yeah, they are a threat at what they do. They’re very good at what they do. But again, we said we’ve nullified them. They’ve hardly had a chance. So, we’ll take another three points on to Saturday.


He then looked ahead to next weeks fixture against Pilkington with him saying “You don’t really worry about them. We just concentrate on us. I’ve heard a few things of Lower Breck and Ramsbottom winning. If we win every game, it doesn’t matter what they do. So, we’ll go into that game full of confidence, like we have been for the last six, seven weeks. Play our game, it’s on a 3G. Yeah, it’s not as good as ours, but we’ll just go there, turn up, be professional and hopefully, I’m confident we’ll come away with another three points.”

Reaction: Dave McNabb FC St Helens (A)

Bury won 1-0 over FC St Helens as their charge for the title continues, Manager Dave McNabb spoke to the club to give us his thoughts on the game.


Dave McNabb: “I think overall, over the moon really, I think a really tough game, really challenging conditions, the pitch was tough in terms of the dry weather and the bobbles, wasn’t conducive to playing any type of football on, but you go through a season and you’ve got to come up against different challenges and different adversity and I think the lads were absolutely outstanding. It wasn’t pretty to watch, but we battled to a man, we probably created another four or five really good chances, the game should have been out of sight I think, even in the first half, but the commitment, the group, it’s a special group, I think we’ve seen something change over the last few weeks, the togetherness, the camaraderie, the never say die attitude and today they’ve shown it in buckets and made up it’s another game ticked off.”


Dave then gave special praise to St Helens keeper Joe Mason who he had previously worked with at Macclesfield with him saying “Yeah, he did, he’s an excellent young goalkeeper, Joe, worked with him at Macclesfield, he’s got a really good future ahead of him, you’ve seen today what he’s best at, that shot stop and that reaction, reaction saves, he’s a really, really outstanding young goalkeeper to go far, obviously working with Mick at FC St Helens I think, it’s a good club for him, it’s a good base for him to grow, so yeah, if we’re going to be critical I think we’ve got to put the chances away where we don’t give them a chance but he’s made one in particular was a world-class save and it was unbelievable but I think there’s a few where we could have got a bit better contact and maybe put the game to bed.”


He then spoke about the reasons behind Aaron Chalmers inclusion in the squad as well as Connor Pye absence with him saying “Yeah, so obviously I think what Aaron gives us is a lot of experience and a lot of leadership and communication across the back line, we knew it was going to be a game today where there was probably going to be a lot of balls put on us and I think that’s obviously Aaron’s strength sort of defending that first contact so it made sense to bring Aaron in today. It’s tough, it’s tough to leave lads out of the squad, it’s tough to make decisions over who starts but it’s a better problem to have than it is to obviously be searching for someone to fill a gap so yeah, we’ve got an unbelievable squad at the moment and it’s difficult to manage but every time lads turn up they keep performing.”


Dave also provided an update to Rhys Kendall injury after he came off in the second half, he said “No, it’s going to be touch and go, I think he thought he could get through it which is always a good sign, he’s just rolled his ankle a little bit so it’s a little bit sore but tender now, obviously we’ll assess him Tuesday and make some decisions for next weekend but hopefully Thursday.”


He then spoke about whether this squad has what it takes to go all the way “Yeah, I mean, that’s what I mean, the lads are together, they’ve got a common goal, I think they all understand the jobs, they all understand the roles within the team, within the squad and look, they’re all pushing each other and you know, steel sharp and steel, I think it’s really pleasing to be around the group at the moment, it’s really enjoyable to be around them, I think they’re pushing each other, they’re striving for excellence and you know, it’s only 1-0, I’ll take 1-0 every game between now and the end of the season so, another big three points, doesn’t matter what else happens, I think we’re just sole focused now on Pilkington away next week, we’ve got two good training sessions and everything’s about trying to pick up three points next weekend.”


Dave then gave a message to the fans as we head into the last five games of the season “I think as staff obviously we’re always looking ahead, we’re always looking at what’s coming sort of over the horizon but for the players, we’ve only got one game left and that’s the next one, we’ve got to focus on the next game, the fans were unbelievable again today, they’ve been outstanding at Gigg, we’ve got a tough away game next week, come in your numbers, bring the noise and we’ll make sure that we try and get the three points.”

Manchester FA Provider of the Month

We have recently been named the Manchester FA ‘Provider of the Month’, due to the number of new casual playing opportunities established at Bury FC since the turn of the year.


From girls only “Wildcats” for 4-9 year olds and “Squad Girls’” for those aged 11 to 14, to our successful “Comets” pan disability sessions and our most recently launched walking football, all groups are benefitting from playing on the 3G pitch at Gigg Lane and have been welcomed into the Bury Football Club family.

We have also expanded our over-subscribed men’s recreational sections by introducing a men’s vets group, so we now have over 50 men signed up to our recreational sessions and with more wanting to join, we are looking at ways to expand further.


Our development plans will see more new initiatives launched throughout the year and we are continually looking for new and innovative ways to get people down to the stadium both on and off the pitch.




Our next phase will see us introduce Soccercise classes and fitness boot camps. Again supported by Manchester FA to get things up and running, they are always on hand to offer support. We are working closely with Bury Council live well practitioners too.

One particular project we can’t wait to get started on is working with local BAME group on engagement through football and fitness for women and children from diverse backgrounds. This partnership will see the group take part in activities at Gigg Lane and also attend our final matches of the season.

We know for some, this will be their first ever football match, so we want to make it a special experience for them and we hope that they catch the football bug!

ANOTHER CLUB RECORD BEATEN

When Dave Russell’s team of the 1960/1961 season impressively claimed the Football League Division Three Championship, they did so in swashbuckling style. 

Three players – Don Watson, Bill Calder and Alan Jackson (pictured left to right below) – each scored more than twenty goals and the Shakers created a new club record by scoring an impressive 108 league goals.




Speed forward to 2025 and Dave McNabb’s boys have now already beaten that record – and with seven games still remaining! 

Those seven goals against Litherland REMYCA, 12 days ago, took Bury’s total for the season to 113 goals and who knows how many the final total might end up as – after the weekend against Barnoldswick Town we stand at 115 goals.


Fantastic stuff lads. Congratulations on creating yet another club record.
