  1. Ahead of Gigg Lane’s biggest fixture for five years, we are delighted to be able to confirm that the Manchester Road End will be also be open for the first time since 2019. Works to the Main Stand and documentation around spectator safety will require further review, and despite the best endeavours, this now cannot take place until after next week’s game. Keen to maximse the number of seats Gigg Lane has to offer for the Play-off Semi-Final, the stadium team in recent weeks were able to turnaround the required improvements in the Manchester Road End and after a thorough clean, it is ready to go and has been given the all-clear from the visiting safety officer this week. The opening of the Manchester Road End does provide the club with the ability to increase the overall stadium capacity to 8,724. Now comes the task of filling it, and this comes down to you! With over 2,000 pre-sale tickets already sold, tickets for the Cemetery End will become available shortly. Tickets for away supporters in the Manchester Road End will become available later on Saturday, once our opponents are confirmed. Details on the ability to provide pay-on-the-gate turnstiles will be made closer to the game and subject to a review on tickets sold ahead of the game. Padiham currently hold 4th position, with Charnock Richard looking to win their final league game this Saturday afternoon, to jump into this spot and become our opponents on Tuesday evening for the single-leg play-off tie. 3. The North West Counties Football League have released updated dates for the playoffs following Charnock Richard’s continuing progress in the playoff hunt. These are now: Play-off Semi-Finals 2nd v 5th and 3rd v 4th, Tuesday 30th April Play-off Final Winners of each Semi-Final, Saturday 4th May Ties are to be played at the home venue of the higher ranking side. As it stands, we are due to take on Padiham at Gigg Lane in our play-off semi final. Should Charnock proceed to win both tomorrow night at Colne and against Pilkington on Saturday, we will take on the Greens at Gigg Lane and Padiham will take on Wythenshawe Town. Kendal Town would fall out of the play-off picture in this case. More details on admission arrangements for the Semi-Final will be communicated after the point our opponent is confirmed. #BuryFC | #PartOfIt View the full article
  4. The club has received the following message from Ramsbottom United following Saturday’s game at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium: On behalf of everyone at Ramsbottom United, may I pass on my thanks to the Bury supporters for their exemplary behaviour at the game on Saturday. Their presence helped us to achieve a record home gate for the club of 2,138, and the support they offered your team throughout the 90 minutes was first class. The whole afternoon presented us with no problems, and it was a pleasure to host the fixture. We wish you well in the play-offs, but if you are unsuccessful, we look forward to welcoming you back to “Rammy” next season. Your fans are a credit to Bury FC. Kind regards, Tony Cunningham, Secretary, Ramsbottom United. We would also like to thank our supporters in line with Tony’s comments above, and for adhering to our requests to remain in the stands at all times. It is of great importance that we all work together to make the matchday experience a special one, for all supporters. We take this into the playoffs now! 8. The North West Counties Football League released the dates for the playoffs ahead of the end of the season, taking place over the following two Saturdays as indicated below: Play-off Semi-Finals 2nd v 5th and 3rd v 4th, Saturday 27th April Play-off Final Winners of each Semi-Final, Saturday 4th May Ties are to be played at the home venue of the higher ranking side. Following yesterday’s results, we are due to take on Padiham at Gigg Lane next Saturday in our play-off semi final. However, there remains the completion of fixture backlog for other sides going into next week. Charnock Richard still have four games to complete their season and their potential points haul could still see them grab 4th place, and a play-off spot. Should it be mathematically possible that Charnock could still affect the play-off picture, the Semi-Finals would be delayed to the following midweek to account for this. The league will review the situation on Wednesday this week, following the completion of the first two of Charnock Richard’s games – taking place on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd. More details on admission arrangements for the Semi-Final will be communicated after this point. #BuryFC | #PartOfIt View the full article

  11. Bury Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of Leighton James at the age of 71. The winger was part of Martin Dobson’s famous “Forgotten Fifteen” who won promotion in the 1984/85 season using only 15 players all season, Leighton made 46 appearances and scored five goals. James won 54 caps for Wales, scoring 10 goals including a famous penalty to secure victory over England at Wembley in 1977. In his long and storied career he made almost 650 club appearances, turning out for clubs such as Burnley, Swansea, Derby, QPR, Sunderland and Newport County. He later held various coaching positions at a number of clubs, including Llanelli, before moving into media work as a columnist and pundit, where the directness and honesty he showed as a player continued to be in evidence. The thoughts of everyone at Bury are with Leighton’s friends and family at this sad time. Once a Shaker. Always a Shaker. View the full article
  12. The final league game of the season is upon us, and albeit possibly a slim chance, the league title is still up for grabs as we head the short distance north along the A56 to take on the Rams this Saturday. The Shakers faithful sucked up the available tickets in their numbers, with an anticipated crowd of 2,000 descending on the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium, which is one of three locations that the league trophy could be arriving at as the league season comes to its conclusion. The side weren’t able to capitalise on both Wythenshawe and Wythenshawe Town not winning last weekend which opened up the title race, when we took on in-form Padiham in our hastily arranged fixture at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday. Goals in each half for the visitors put us on the back foot and chasing in a must-win game. Connor Comber’s excellent free-kick strike late in added time at the end of the game, was the only attempt that was able to breach the goal, despite numerous efforts going ever so close. The post (on two occasions), saves, blocks and shots flashing wide, as well as some loud penalty shouts from the majority 3,500 home crowd left all with a frustration of what might have been. Just one of these chances going in, would no doubt have changed the game. But they didn’t, and we now hope for another minor miracle. A win for the Shakers, and both Wythenshawe sides not winning again gives us the trophy. A win for either of those sides means we will head into the playoffs, whatever the result in Ramsbottom. A keen eye will be cast towards the other games, but the job needs doing first in our own game. Something Dave McNabb and his squad will be keen to put right following Tuesday. As ever we need you to be the 12th team member behind the group from the off. Wherever you are taking in the game, in the ground, via our audio coverage from Roch Valley Radio, or across our social media channels. If you are in the ground, we do ask for your patience as our hosts are expecting a larger than usual crowd. Please arrive early, and be respectful of the staff on hand to assist on the day. As ever, at all times the playing field needs to remain the domain of the players and officials ONLY. No matter the result, fans are requested to remain in the stand areas for the duration of the game. There have been incidents of Bury supporters on the pitch this season and we cannot have a repeat. Should there be a need for celebration, please remain where you are. The manager wants to assure all supporters, that they will remain on the ground for as long as is needed to see every single supporter. But this can only be done if the playing areas are clear. The match information for the trip, can be found below. Last time out – Padiham FC Playing Away Episode 10 In Opposition – Ramsbottom Ramsbottom United, established in 1966 during England’s World Cup triumph, has been guided by its founding chairman, Harry Williams, for over five decades. From humble beginnings on a local park to its current home at the Riverside Stadium, the club has grown into a community pillar. Early success in regional leagues during the 1970s set the foundation for future achievements. By 1995, Ramsbottom United joined the football pyramid, ascending quickly through the North West Counties League with key infrastructure developments, including the installation of floodlights and ground improvements. The club’s participation in the FA Cup and consistent league performances marked a period of robust growth and fan engagement. The late 2000s brought managerial changes and the dynamic duo of Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson, propelling the club to new heights with record points and victories. Their departure in 2015, however, led to a challenging period, culminating in relegation. Despite setbacks, the club’s resilience shone through in the FA Trophy, where they made a commendable run until a dramatic tie with AFC Fylde. Recent years have seen fluctuations in fortune, with promising seasons disrupted by managerial changes and external factors like the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, facing another relegation, Ramsbottom appointed Steve Wilkes, aiming to reclaim their status in the Northern Premier League. Through all the ups and downs, Ramsbottom United has remained a cornerstone of the community, embodying the spirit of local football. Tickets – Pay On The Gate TICKETS FOR THIS GAME ARE SOLD OUT. 13. Bury Football Club is in the highly unusual position of speaking from the lowly position of a club in the ninth tier of English football and as one who has actually twice won the FA Cup. These days our FA Cup campaign starts in August, before the Premier League has even started. Cup replays have long been a staple of the competition and have provided an opportunity for non-league clubs to generate much-needed revenue and increase their profile. More importantly, the history of the competition demonstrates that replays have played a significant role in creating so many memories, which span generations of football supporters. Last season our FA Cup run took us to within one game of the first round proper. We were eventually knocked out in October after nine FA Cup games. Three of them were replays. Manchester City won the Cup in six games, none of them replays. We knew, even if we didn’t admit it publicly, that these cup runs would hurt our league form. We saw performances dip a little after a big cup game. They also hurt us financially. The prize fund for winners in each round is usually enough to help clubs break even for the fixture given gate receipts are split. We don’t think the players or supporters regretted a single minute of it. We could have asked the manager to play a weakened team. He wouldn’t have accepted that and nor would our fans. The FA Cup is too important to all football supporters for us not to treat it with the respect it deserves. All clubs and all supporters have cherished memories of FA Cup replays under the floodlights. We loved ours. Players with full time jobs outside football will slog their way through the early rounds, making their own way to away fixtures, barely covering their own travel costs, to be watched by supporters who are genuinely excited to be travelling on a Saturday morning to places they had to Google the day before to find. The Premier League, we are told, is the ‘product’ the global market wishes to consume. The FA Cup is the beating heart of football that English fans savour. Accident, risk, failure, mud, pitches with slopes, and very occasionally last minute glory, are all part of its beauty. This should not be a debate about the financial implications of removing replays. This is about what football supporters really want, what we love and cherish and why that is worth protecting. It about “the magic of the cup”. Bury Football Club now stand shoulder to shoulder with other volunteer run clubs at the foot of the football pyramid, not with the modern day FA Cup winners. We would like their voice to be heard too. View the full article

  18. Well, it all comes down to this. Two games to define a season. A crazy season, including points deductions, a number of postponements due to weather, behind closed doors fixtures and now to top it all off, a change of home venue to get the game ON! Saturday’s postponement of our game against Padiham, came less than 48 hours after the previous game had ended. This did see us victorious over neighbours Ramsbottom United under rainy Bury skies at Gigg Lane, but ultimately on top of a surface struggling to cope with the rigours it was being put through. As manager Dave McNabb explained in his summary video, Thursday night’s game has left the pitch in an unplayable condition and we have a forecast of more wet weather to come. With the season end rapidly approaching, the club agreed with the league on a venue switch late on Saturday evening. FC United’s Broadhurst Park coming to the rescue at the eleventh hour. We thank the ‘Red Rebels‘, who have returned the favour following their groundshare with the Shakers from 2005-2014. Amazingly, FC United’s first league game at Gigg Lane in the summer of 2005 was against non-other than our opponents at Broadhurst Park this week, Padiham. And what a crucial game to take to north-east Manchester. With both Wythenshawe sides ahead of the Shakers in the league going into the weekend, failing to win their respective games against Chadderton and Burscough, the door has cracked open for a late title charge. Two wins lands us top spot and the league title. Where would you rather be on Tuesday night? Be #PartofIt with our match information below. Match Highlights – Ramsbottom Utd Post Match Interviews In Opposition – Padiham FC Founded in November 1878, Padiham Football Club, initially known as the ‘Caldersiders’, quickly became one of Lancashire’s soccer pioneers and a prominent team in England. The club was a founding member of the Lancashire Football Association’s Senior Cup in 1879 and achieved success in the F.A. Cup during the 1883-84 season. Their early encounters included significant victories over Burnley F.C. and matches drawing crowds exceeding 2,000 at their original ground near River Calder, leased from the Shuttleworth family. However, the establishment of the Football League and the legalization of professionalism in football shifted the competitive landscape, leading to a decline in Padiham’s fortunes. The club struggled to attract skilled players and financial constraints forced them into lower leagues. World War One halted their activities, and they remained inactive until their revival in 1949 at the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground. Over the years, Padiham saw various league changes and spent significant funds on ground upgrades. They rejoined the North West Counties Football League in 2000, won the Premier Division in 2013, and after a brief stint in the Northern Premier League, returned to the North West Counties League in 2015. This season has seen the ‘Storks’ make a late charge at the play-offs, after only two losses in the last 10 they sit in 7th going into the game. Wins in all three final games would see them in with a very good shout of playing in the post-season, so all to play for. Highlights of our game at Padiham in summery August conditions can be found below. 19. We head to Broadhurst Park, home of FC United of Manchester, this coming Tuesday 16th April to take on Padiham in our penultimate game of the season. Kick-off is 7.45pm. The top-of-the-table really opened up over weekend, making our game in hand over the top two a crucial one. Two wins will win us the league. We want you there to cheer the lads on. As indicated in our release yesterday, we are now able to share more details on how it will work. Tickets & Admission Tickets already purchased for the game, be that season tickets, hospitality tickets, general admission tickets or matchday programmes will all remain valid for this fixture. Our matchday turnstile operators will be on hand to scan in your tickets as usual. We are working on the best solution for those with 1885 / hospitality tickets and hope to provide a separate update to those supporters on Monday following a meeting with FC United. We will make tickets available to buy online on Monday, with capacity having now been confirmed at 4,900. All tickets issued will be unreserved, with access available to all areas of the ground upon entry. The ground will be open from 6.30pm, with early arrival suggested for those who wish to be seated in the 500 available seats. We would appreciate supporters showing courtesy to those with greater difficulty standing. Tickets will be on sale until 6pm on the day of the game, so to guarantee entry make sure you purchase your ticket in advance. A pay-on-the-gate turnstile will be made available on the night, up to the available capacity. Padiham supporters are requested to purchase away supporter tickets and upon arrival, stewards and staff will direct you to the correct turnstile. More details on this will follow ahead of the game on Tuesday. Travel & Transport FC United have provided their stadium Travel Plan, which is accessed here. As at Gigg Lane, the car park at Broadhurst Park will be made available for officials, players, staff and for those with mobility issues. To contact about this, please email here. Parking for hospitality guests (1885 Suite ticket holders) as offered at Gigg Lane, will unfortunately not be available at Broadhurst Park and we apologise for this inconvenience. Parking elsewhere is limited to the roadside along Lightbowne Road. Please do not park along St Mary’s Road or the streets accessed from there, which are to be saved for residents. There are a number of public transport options including a local tram stop at Newton Heath & Moston (around a mile walk from the ground), train station at Moston (under a mile from the ground), as well as several bus services from Manchester which alight on St Mary’s Road close to the ground or along Moston Lane, which is a five minute walk away. Please check out the details on timings of services before you travel here at Transport for Greater Manchester. Recognising the impact this change of venue will have on some supporters who only travel locally, the club are putting on two coaches free of charge. This will be for those supporters who would otherwise struggle to get to the game at Broadhurst Park. These coaches will leave Gigg Lane at approx. 6pm on Tuesday evening, returning back to Gigg Lane after the game. Further details will be provided during Monday. We stress that this offer should only be taken up by those who could not get to the game otherwise, giving all supporters the chance of being at the game. Live Stream & Audio Commentary As usual for all our midweek fixtures, a pay-per-view Live Stream broadcast will be available for all supporters unable to make it to Broadhurst Park. You won’t miss any of the action! The stream will cost £6.99 (inc. VAT) and will be available on the day of the game. Season ticket holders will be provided with free access to this Live Stream service, as part of their purchase. All will be contacted by email (used to purchase their ticket) ahead of the game, with the details on how to access the game digitally. Click here to contact us if you haven’t received access previously and believe you should be doing. There will also be live audio commentary provided by the team at Roch Valley Radio from 7.30pm. To access this via their website, click here. We hope this answers the immediate questions supporters have. We thank you for your patience and understanding in dealing with this change at such short notice. Further details will be released before the game. View the full article
  20. Our game with Padiham has now been arranged for this coming Tuesday evening, 16th April with a 7.45pm kick-off. This time with a change of venue. Our friends at FC United of Manchester have offered their Broadhurst Park ground for the night, with the pitch at Gigg Lane currently unplayable following today’s postponement. With all fixtures to be completed by Saturday 20th April, and with risk of a further weather related postponement on Tuesday, the club sourced alternative arrangements over the weekend and thank FC United for their generosity and speed to turn this around in such a short timeframe. The ground capacity at Broadhurst Park is 4,400 so can accommodate a large midweek crowd. We realise this may have a significant impact on some supporters. Further details will be provided as soon as possible regarding admission, travel details and watching the game on a stream. All season tickets, and previously bought matchday tickets will be valid as usual. There is no need to buy new tickets. More details will follow in the coming days, and we thank supporters for their patience while these are put in place and able to be communicated. #BuryFC | #PartOfIt View the full article

  22. There will be a pitch inspection at 11:15 am due to concerns over the playing surface at Gigg Lane. Concerns were raised before Thursday’s game and due to weather before and during the game the pitch deteriorated quite badly, with only light remedial work having taken place yesterday due the pitch condition. We want to make sure that the surface is both safe and playable for both teams. 25. Well it’s been some season and the final league home match of our first campaign back in our Gigg Lane home is now upon us as we welcome Padiham FC to Gigg Lane. With just one point separating the top three clubs in the league and all three sides having only two fixtures remaining it’s still very much all to play for as we continue our hunt for promotion to the Northern Premier League. We last met Padiham back in August where goals from the now departed Jack Lenehan and Darius Palma sealed all three points from the Shakers. We’ve been on a long journey through the NWCFL Premier Division since then and we are a much changed side with only three players from the match day squad of sixteen remaining at Gigg Lane. (Andy Briggs, Connor Comber and Gaz Peet) This could be your last chance to cheers the lads on at Gigg Lane this season (depending on our final position) So we want to see the ground BOUNCING! Get down in numbers, bring your friends, bring your family… Bring as many as you can and create the same phenomenal atmosphere you have all season! As you have seen, South Stand tickets for the last couple of home games have sold out so if you plan to sit there this weekend head over to our ticket portal and secure yours now! Speaking of the last couple of games, we came out 2-1 winners on Thursday evening in a hard fought battle in less than ideal circumstances against near neighbours Ramsbottom United. You can check out the highlights and post match interviews from that game below. Match Highlights Post Match Interviews In Opposition – Padiham FC Founded in November 1878, Padiham Football Club, initially known as the ‘Caldersiders’, quickly became one of Lancashire’s soccer pioneers and a prominent team in England.
