    1. Clamp down on Anti-Social Behaviour

Despite another great result on the road this weekend, it was not without problems. Particularly those of anti-social behaviour which the club take very seriously and which all of us need to tackle to make the environment on matchdays welcoming for all.

Any observations of disorder of any kind are reported to the league and to the County FA. Such reports will inevitably bring charges against the club for which there is a risk of large financial penalties. Continued indiscretions also risk the club being penalised, the most severe being the playing of games behind closed doors. This would be catastrophic for the club.

Whilst many fans see this as just a game of football and a release from the day-to-day stresses of life, the football authorities and the club will not tolerate such behaviour.

We have put in place a disciplinary procedure and clear sanctions for any unacceptable behaviour. These are displayed at the turnstiles, alongside the ground regulations. The club will not fail to take action against individuals where necessary.

All fans should remember that this is our club and we are judged on the behaviour of even the smallest minority of supporters.

Should we wish to continue to grow and at some stage return professional football to the town, we can only do so by removing such behaviour from our matches. Please therefore do not turn a blind eye and bring any reports of disorder to the club’s attention.

The best way to do this is by reporting any incidents on the day, at the game, to the stewards in attendance around the ground who can deal with any issues in line with ground regulations.

If this is not possible, supporters are requested to contact the club direct via email by clicking below and enclosing any supporting information to assist the club in dealing with the matter.

      Email about an incident
There are other avenues for supporters to contact managing authorities directly to report on behaviours we all want rid of within the game. Click on the below logos to contact either the Manchester FA, Kick-It Out, True Vision and HerGameToo.

You can also download the Kick-It Out app that enables on-the-spot reporting of incidents (links below):

      Android Link / iOS Link

Help our club be one of the best around, by enforcing a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour of any kind. We welcome all supporters coming together to make Bury games, whilst atmospheric and fun, also welcoming and respectful to all who attend.

      Thank you!

    3. Club Statement

Following a North West Counties Football League Management Committee meeting held on 6th September 2023, we have been notified of the League’s intention to fine the club £100 and deduct three points for fielding a player contracted to another club.

The club disputes this and is in the process of appealing to the Football Association. No sanctions will take effect until the appeal has been heard.

We know supporters will be severely disappointed to learn that we might lose hard earned points, as is Andy Welsh and his team. We would, however, ask for your patience as we go through the appeals process and will not be sharing any further information at this stage so as not to compromise that appeal.

In addition to the appeal, the club has now also made some process changes to mitigate against this risk in future. The volunteer involved in the transfer is no longer working with the club, and there is no evidence he knew of a problem. Neither the player nor any of the management team were aware of any concerns, and we would not play anyone where there was any known problem. There is nothing to be gained by blaming individuals given the specifics of this case.

The points deduction does not alter any of the results achieved to date. They all stand. There are 105 points up for grabs in our league campaign now. The focus is on continuing with our preparations and winning as many of those points as possible until the end of the season.

    4. Club Statement

Bury Football Club has been informed by Manchester FA that an independent committee has decided that due to the offensive comments made by two supporters during our game against West Didsbury and Chorlton in September, we should be forced to play our next two home games behind closed doors.

We reported the incident at the time, and provided video and other evidence to the police to assist their enquiries at some considerable cost to the club. We have not disputed the claims made. The individuals have not yet had their case heard by the law enforcement authorities and have been prevented from entering the stadium indefinitely whilst we await the outcome.

Our grounds for appeal are limited. We have accepted the facts of the incident, and do not believe that we acted in a way which was anything other than responsible and measured. We accept that the two individuals involved could have been removed from the stadium immediately but the stewards took a view at the time to stop any further problems and review the situation afterwards. We paid additional money to a CCTV specialist to review footage and provided this to the police. Our stewarding costs are £3-4,000 per game, it is not something we take lightly.

The basis of our appeal is that the punishment is excessive. We have seen multiple incidents over recent years of groups of supporters collectively issuing racist, misogynistic and homophobic abuse, as well as tragedy chanting. These have gone unpunished or have been dealt with by fines. We acted on the day. We are unable to completely control the words of two people in a crowd of 3,838 on that particular occasion.

We accept there should be a punishment, but excluding every well-behaved football supporter from a stadium which has already excluded those who perpetrated the offences, does nothing to promote inclusion.

The loss of revenue is extremely damaging and our belief is that it would be far better to use that revenue to fund a campaign intended to positively promote diversity and inclusion. Football needs to change, this would help make that change.

A stadium closure throws this opportunity away and is likely to ignite a more divisive and polarised debate on these important issues.

We have taken huge strides to actively promote diversity and inclusion since forming the club and have raised money and awareness throughout the borough through the hard work of our volunteers, many of whom will be deeply dismayed by this judgement as it punishes them despite their efforts.

For this reason we intend to appeal. It is not because we are in any way dismissive of the issues involved. The appeal process will take a number of weeks and we will continue to play in front of supporters during this period, and we will keep supporters updated as to any progress made as it happens.

We are also concerned that this specific judgment has been published publicly whilst matters are still being considered by the relevant law enforcement authorities.

    5. Club Statement – Update on Supporter Behaviour

We have today (Tuesday) had further conversations with Greater Manchester Police, around crowd issues in the play off final at Ericstan Park on Saturday.

The police will now be working through a process of identifying the people that encroached on the playing surface when we scored, and also the images on social media of fans fighting.

As a club, we deplore this behaviour and as well as supporting the police, we will be issuing the most serious of sanctions.

We will keep our supporters updated in due course.

    6. Club Statement: Andy Welsh

We can confirm that Bury Football Club and manager Andy Welsh have agreed to part company.

We would like to thank Andy for his hard work and commitment to the club, the players, and it’s volunteers over the past three and a half years.

Andy provided outstanding leadership throughout some difficult and turbulent times, not least during a global pandemic when just playing football was a challenge. In addition to winning a league title Andy quietly helped and supported many volunteers off the pitch when they needed it.

He more than earned the right to lead the team at Gigg Lane at the start of the season. We can’t speak highly enough about him as a person, and we know many will be extremely sad to see him go.

Unfortunately, we have decided now is the right time for a change and we wish Andy all the best for the future.

The under-23s management team of Leon Mike and Stephen Sheil will take charge on an interim basis, with the recruitment process to appoint a new manager to begin with immediate effect.

    7. Club Statement: Fan Behaviour

There was a short delay in the game restarting towards the end of the 90 minutes on Saturday due to three people attempting to enter the playing area. They were stopped from getting onto the pitch by stewards. Two of them did not co-operate and took some time to be restrained and removed.

We have a number of eye witness statements, as well as video evidence, and are conducting our own investigation. We will act to protect the club and everyone working at the club from this behaviour. Where there are possible criminal offences, we will hand over evidence to the police to review.

We have also made a number of policy decisions to further protect the club. These include:

We will suspend the sale of alcohol in the stands during the game as a minimum and consider an outright ban. Starkies Bar will remain open before and after games, and the 1885 Suite will operate as usual for those ticket holders. We will release more information on this once a decision has been made.
We will enforce stricter stewarding to prevent any potential encroachment of the pitch, including stopping anyone standing near the pitch during the game.
We will ask players to be mindful where they celebrate goals and avoid areas where people are congregating.
We know people have historically congregated in the corner of the South and West (Manchester Road End) Stands at the end of games for decades, as they have looked for a quick exit from the ground. Nowadays matches last for an additional five or ten minutes and it’s hard to know when the final whistle will be. Please stay in your seats until the final whistle where you can use any of three exits to leave the South Stand. These are behind the the Manchester Road End, in front of the Manchester Road End or through the Cemetery End. There is no need for anyone to stand before the final whistle other than to leave the stadium or go to the lavatory.

We all recognise that an incredibly small percentage of Bury supporters are responsible for the problems we’ve faced in recent weeks, and it is bitterly disappointing that two or three people in a crowd of well over 3,000 can ruin the enjoyment of football for us all. However, we have to act now in the belief that we can then return to a more relaxed atmosphere in the future. We are concerned that the consumption of excessive alcohol is an enabler to anti-social behaviour.

Today we should be talking about football, not crowd behaviour, but we will continue to punish and prevent anti-social behaviour where we find it.

    8. Club Statement: Points Deduction Upheld

Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in our appeal to overturn the three point deduction, and £100 fine, for fielding an ineligible player at the start of the season.

Glossop North End have also launched their own appeal and as a result we will replay the fixture at a future date to be confirmed, in addition to the three point deduction. The rules do not allow the three points we lose to be awarded to them, so this is their only opportunity to benefit from the situation.

We do not intend to charge season ticket holders to attend this rearranged fixture, subject to league approval.

As previously stated we are disappointed at the outcome, but keen to move on and continue our promotion push.

    9. Club Statement: Supporter Behaviour at Ericstan Park

Bury Football Club wishes to condemn some of the supporter behaviour at our Play-Off Final at Ericstan Park on Saturday afternoon.

We are a community club, and some of the scenes experienced in both the stands and again unfortunately on the pitch, are not acceptable.

It cannot be stressed enough that any poor behaviour reflects on the club in a negative way and has led to severe punishment already during the season.

We are handing over the investigation of these matters to Greater Manchester Police and will liaise with the FA on these matters in due course.

    10. Club Statement: Update

We can confirm that the FA have agreed to a stay of the sanction requiring us to close Gigg Lane to supporters whilst the appeal is heard.

There will be no sanctions until the appeal process concludes. This means that our game against Wythenshawe will be open for supporters of both sides to attend.

We are, however, mindful of the weather and potential for a postponement due to a frozen pitch so continue to advise supporters not to purchase tickets in advance at this stage purely for that reason.

    11. Club Update: March 2024

Following on from the announcement earlier in the week around the stadium ban coming into force from next Tuesday, the club is continuing to work on the plans around this and hopes to communicate an update on this ahead of this weekend.

Prior to that, the following update is provided on other matters of relevance this week, including:

      • Results of a charge following the home game against Skelmersdale United.
      • Impacts of charges on the club
      • Current match-day procedures at Gigg Lane.
      • General Manager to answer your questions.

Please find the full update below.
FA Charge Hearing – Skelmersdale United (27th January)
On Tuesday evening the club attended a second FA hearing within 48 hours, to answer charges relating to rule E.21 during our fixture against Skelmersdale United at Gigg Lane on Saturday 27th January.

The club responded promptly to this charge when informed, which resulted in the de-escalation of the process. We pleaded not guilty to the charge that we ‘failed to ensure our spectators and / or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters or followers) conduct themselves in an orderly fashion’ following an incident that occurred towards the end of the game.

These charges were found to be unproven by the FA and as a result the charges were discharged against the club. We are pleased with this result, and thank the team who responded to the charge for their work in this case.
Impacts of charges on the club
Whilst it is not expected that the club will routinely circulate the results of charges raised against the club (as above), partially as they are a matter to be dealt with privately with any relevant parties or authorities involved, we do recognise that the recent changes resulting in stadium closures will be alarming to supporters.

We welcome the result of the most recent charge and wish to confirm to supporters that the club’s disciplinary group work diligently in both assisting any cases presented and defending the club in these instances. Historical offences have meant that club still sits under a 12-month suspended stadium ban, which runs until mid-September 2024. We are therefore still under scrutiny and will act appropriately to protect against further incidents.

Steps have been taken to eradicate these issues at Gigg Lane, by both removing and banning individuals from the ground, as well as initially removing alcohol sales on match-day and making alterations to seating arrangements.

We will continue to work with the regulatory bodies in ensuring that our supporters conduct themselves appropriately when attending fixtures and we urge all supporters to work with us to this goal. As has been shown this week, these measures are not taken lightly and the penalties are significant and have increased over time.

A full stadium closure makes a large dent in budget expectations, which only serve to affect the club’s ability to progress. There is also the time spent by both staff, alongside dedicated volunteer effort, in preparing for each case. This time would be better spent on improving all the things that supporters want to see from their club.

We urge supporters to take on board the impacts and consequences of fan disorder inside the ground to work with the club and their fellow supporters to build upon what is mostly a vibrant, welcoming and ultimately enjoyable experience in following the Shakers.
        Match Day at Gigg Lane
Supporters will be aware that alcohol sales inside kiosks were re-introduced last week. This has been of a direct result of working with events and kiosk staff in implementing a workable solution. This process will continue to be re-evaluated by the board and General Manager going forward.

There are many other significant developments being worked upon across the club ranging from short to long term in timescale, but definitely show the progressive nature that the club is looking to take, with supporters and the wider community at the heart of these developments.

The most immediate plans centre on some big ticket items, like works to fully open the Main Stand, fan experience initiatives and works towards the proposed 3G pitch installation. We will of course bring you updates on these as they happen.
        Neil Sears answers your questions
To bring supporters insight into some of these plans and despite only officially being in position for a couple of weeks, we will be putting newly-appointed General Manager, Neil Sears, in front of the camera soon to explain his role and how he is settling into life in BL9. We plan for this to be a regular update and a way of reporting on club matters at least every couple of months.

Neil has overall responsibility for running day-to-day operations at Gigg Lane, but as part of the dual-role as club secretary, he also liaises with manager Dave McNabb on team matters.

Whilst we plan to cover the main points in the first part of the video, there will be a chance for supporters to ask questions on the important issues that matter to them across the areas that Neil covers.

If you have a question for Neil, please submit them via email to media@buryfc.co.uk by Sunday 10th March.

    12. Creating A Safe Environment For Supporters

Creating A Safe Environment For Supporters
For our football club to grow, it’s vital we create the right atmosphere inside the ground which makes people feel safe and welcome and encourages people to bring their children, and get involved regardless of their gender, race, or sexuality.

We would like to remind everyone that by turnstiles is a poster containing the following regulation:

‘The use of threatening behaviour and/or foul or abusive language is strictly forbidden and may result in arrest and/or ejection from the Ground. The Club may impose a ban (including, but not limited to, a ban for one or more Matches) and/or the removal of season ticket(s) for any such behaviour.’
We know things can get heated at football games, and we can all say things in the heat of the moment. We can forgive a mistake. But if you feel threatened, or if you observe anti-social behaviour which persistently breaches this regulation please let a steward know. This is a regulation we are prepared to enforce. It’s vital to the long term success of the club that we do so.
If you are concerned that there is a safeguarding issue and a vulnerable person is at threat, you can also contact safeguarding@buryfc.co.uk with your concerns. You can find our safeguarding policy here.
We want everyone to enjoy what will be a historic season for the club and hope you will assist us in ensuring that that happens, without exception.
      Tuesday 7.45pm: Nelson v Bury
We’ve added an extra friendly at short notice to allow some players to top up their minutes ahead of Saturday’s season opener against Glossop on Saturday.
We haven’t yet put tickets on sale for Glossop just yet as we will discuss next week what stands can be opened and what capacity limits we will be working under for this first fixture which is likely to be very well attended.

We will put them on sale as soon as this has been confirmed.
      Collect Your Season Ticket
The ticket office at Gigg Lane will be open Monday to Wednesday this week, from 10am to 12 noon for season ticket card collection.
Please remember that cards are only available if purchased prior to Sunday 2nd July 2023. All season tickets purchased after that date will be digital ONLY.
Further collection times are to be arranged and will be communicated

    13. Darius Palma added to Andy Welsh’s squad

Bury FC are delighted to confirm the signing of attacker Darius Palma, as he becomes the latest signing at Gigg Lane.
The 24-year-old joins the club from fellow NWCFL team Wythenshawe Town, who he made 45 appearances including 37 starts last season and scored 19 goals.   He’s also had spells at Altrincham, Trafford & Curzon Ashton.

“What attracted me to the club was the ambition it has going forward and also the opportunity to play in a ground like Gigg Lane in front of such a huge following.   “As for aims this season, obviously we want to get promoted and start climbing the leagues and get the club back playing as high as possible.”

    14. Dave McNabb Appointed Men’s First Team Manager

Bury Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Dave McNabb as men’s first team manager.

He is joined at Gigg Lane by his assisant Tim Lees and they arrive after a six-month stint at Northern Premier League (NPL) side, Bootle.

An extensive list of candidates was generated following the request for applications last week, with Dave and his team being chosen from a strong shortlist interviewed for the position. As a ‘born winner’, with an objective to play progressive and attractive football, he was the obvious choice to take the club forward into the next stage as we look to move up through the National League System.

Football board chair, Marcel De Matas, told buryfc.co.uk how delighted he was to get a new manager in place quickly to build on the momentum of the recent two victories:
We also caught up with McNabb following the announcement, who was keen to stress how excited he was to be moving to Gigg Lane:
We will have more from Dave in his first interview as manager on Tuesday morning, available on our YouTube channel. Click to subscribe so you never miss a thing, HERE.

The new management team will be in charge for the first time this Tuesday, when we take on FC Isle of Man at Gigg Lane. Get your tickets to give Dave and his staff your biggest Gigg Lane welcome HERE.

    15. Defender Gaz Peet becomes second summer signing

The club are delighted to confirm our second summer signing of defender Gareth Peet.
The 33-year-old joins the club after leaving Atherton Collieries in May, for which he is the record appearance holder at the club.
Peet made 36 appearances for the club in his final season, scoring twice, the latter of which was on the final day of the season, which was his 50th goal for the club.
He joined Colls in 2010, having previously played for Skelmersdale United.
Gaz is described as a tricky wing-back with a killer eye from free-kicks.
Upon signing for the club, Peet said: “I am really excited to be signed, the history of the club and also the chance to help the club progress on the pitch is the main reason I’ve signed, I want to get promoted in front of all the fans is the aim.”
Manager, Andy Welsh added: “Gaz is someone I’ve been monitoring for years now. He has an unbelievable engine to get up and down the pitch joining in attacks but also most importantly defensively very hard to beat.
“He has come from a much higher level and offers us the experience we need at the club to build on and add competition to an already very strong group of players and I’m pretty sure if he performs like we know he can he is a player that will be a firm fans favourite with his hard working performances.”
Peet joins Benito Lowe in joining the club this summer, alongside Jack Atkinson, Lewis Gilboy & Connor Comber who have also signed for the 2023/24 season.

    16. Details on Arrangements for Forthcoming games at Gigg Lane

Following the recent incidents of anti-social behaviour, we have brought in some additional safety measures for our home games under the advice of the police.

We acknowledge that almost all supporters are well-behaved and some will feel these are unnecessary measures. However, even standing near the touchline waiting for the game to finish makes stewarding harder and identifying genuine troublemakers difficult to identify in a crowd.

We are faced with ever more serious sanctions for crowd problems so we have to act to protect the wider interests of the club and its supporters. We have noticed other clubs, both professional and non-league, face similar problems over the weekend and this is a concerning trend in football which needs to be addressed.

The first three rows of the South Stand have been cordoned off and will not be available for use. This is to prevent people from rushing towards the side of the pitch when a goal is scored. All supporters will be required to remain in the stand unless leaving the ground or moving to or from a kiosk or the toilet. When moving please keep away from the pitch.

As a result the South Stand capacity will be reduced by around 500 seats and we will open the Cemetery End on Tuesday night and on Saturday against Burscough. We will keep an eye on South Stand ticket sales and decide if it needs to be made all ticket on a game by game basis. The Cemetery End will remain pay-on-the-gate and we will encourage away supporters to this stand, acknowledging some may have already bought tickets.

No alcohol will be served from kiosks. We have explored way of allowing alcohol sales with restrictions but the advice received from various third parties has consistently been that trying to manage alcohol sales in a restricted manner, such as stopping sales at a certain time or limiting consumption to inside the kiosk, is more likely to cause trouble than stopping alcohol sales altogether. Nobody working in a kiosk is responsible for this decision and they will have no alcohol available to sell.

      Anti-social behaviour is not acceptable.

You can report it to a steward, and the club has acted on reports, including referral to the police for potential criminal investigations. The club has a clear policy on this with sanctions. We have excluded a small number of supporters from matches this season already, with bans ranging from months to an indefinite amount of time. We will not make statements about specific individuals where this might prejudice criminal proceedings, but please do not take this as a lack of action.

We don’t think this should make the match any less enjoyable for the vast majority of supporters. It will be a safe and comfortable environment, and very similar to how things were prior to the 2019 league expulsion.

You can now have a drink in Starkies before and after the game, as long as you do not take your drink into the stands. You can make as much noise as you like. We are there to watch football, let’s not risk losing that again.

    18. Emily Wilcock

Bury Football Club is extremely saddened to share the passing of Emily Wilcock, aged 27.

Emily joined to play within the recreational setup two and a half years ago and was an very proud and committed member of the setup, barely missing a training session, taking part in extra summer sessions and attending social events with the squad.

A member of the ‘Greens’, one of a number of our teams competing in the local recreational leagues, who won League 2 of the Greater Manchester Women’s Flexi League in 2022-23 and was part of the club trip to Barcelona in 2022.

She grabbed her first goal of the season in the last game of last season, and was selected as Manager’s Player of the Season in 2021-22.

Everyone who knew Emily will know she was such a lovely person with a great personality and always had a big smile on her face. She will be solely missed for all these reasons.

Emily’s passing will be marked at both our Women’s game this evening and at Gigg Lane on Saturday afternoon.

As a club, we wish to pass on our thoughts and condolences to Emily’s family, boyfriend, friends and all of her club teammates as they come to terms with this extremely sad news.

      Rest in peace, Emily.

    19. End Of Season Awards Presentation

It’s been a long hard season for all concerned at Bury Football Club with our first team falling heartbreakingly short in a playoff final penalty shootout against Wythenshawe Town.

However, it is essential that we celebrate the successes of all of our teams within the Bury Football Club family as we complete our first season back at Gigg Lane.

In this regard, we would like to invite supporters to join us on Saturday 18th May at Gigg Lane to be part of our rearranged end of season celebrations, where we plan to recognise the efforts and achievements of all of our teams.

Tickets for this event are limited due to restrictions in place at Gigg Lane, whilst pitch works are being undertaken. 250 spaces will be available free of charge on a first come, first served basis.

The gates open at 1 pm, with the awards being given out from 2 pm.

This event will be a lower key event than originally planned owing to ongoing works at Gigg Lane and to it being holiday season for the players. There should, however, be representation from the men’s first team, women’s first team, men’s U23s and our junior team (U12s).

Entry is through the Manchester Road End turnstiles by ticket only.

Food will be available from Cugini Pizza with a pop up bar being open for refreshments including alcoholic beverages.

Comber knocked up 45 appearances last season, with the second most goal contributions amongst the squad, scoring 18 goals and supplying five assists.
