  2. The competitive season is finally here! We welcome South Liverpool to Gigg Lane for our Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie. Our pre-season has been solid, rounding it off with a 3-1 victory against Wigan on Tuesday night. All about taking that momentum into the competitive action. In Opposition – South Liverpool South have won one and lost one of their opening two competitive games in the NWCFL Premier Division, an opening day defeat at home to Stockport Town 3-0, followed by a 3-1 victory at Atherton LR on Tuesday night. We picked up victories in both games against them last season, 2-0 at Gigg Lane and 1-0 at Jericho Lane. The club came into existence just 90 years ago this year and was relaunched in 1991. On the Day & In the GroundOur Matchday @ Gigg guide is available to read to find out everything you need to know going on in and around the ground. 3. We are delighted to confirm the signing of winger Ryan Atkinson, who will join Northwich Victoria immediately on loan. A product of Chester’s academy, he was awarded the Peter Mitchell Trophy, the Academy’s prestigious Players’ Player of the Year, a testament to both his talent and character on and off the pitch. Ryan has featured for us off the bench in pre-season games against Chester & Ashton Athletic. Manager, Dave McNabb said: “Ryan came into preseason and really impressed in every season and game. His ability is clearly evident, but he’s also very switched on for such a young lad. “Consistent game time is key to Ryan’s development, so an agreement for him to go straight out on loan to Vics works perfectly for all parties.” The club will monitor Ryan’s development throughout the season, and we thank Northwich for aiding his development in adult football. New signings are brought to you in association with S&S Northern. View the full article
  4. Bury Football Club is proud to announce the beginning of a comprehensive Strategic Plan Review, designed to shape the future direction of the club across four key pillars: Football, Community, Commercial, and Stadium. As we move forward, it’s vital that the voices of our supporters, volunteers, partners, and the wider Bury community are heard. To ensure this, we are starting with a series of small, focused group discussions. These focus groups will provide an open and constructive environment for participants to share ideas and contribute to the long-term vision of the club. This first stage marks an important step in building a stronger, more sustainable Bury FC — one that honours our heritage while embracing innovation and opportunity for the future. Our Four Strategic Pillars: Football: Developing a clear pathway for players, coaches, and teams across all levels. Community: Strengthening our connection with local people, groups, and initiatives. Commercial: Building sustainable revenue streams and strong partnerships. Stadium: Enhancing our home, Gigg Lane, to better serve fans and the community. We will be inviting a diverse range of stakeholders to take part in these focus groups to ensure we have a variety of views from across our fanbase, with initial communications to be released in the coming weeks. Further opportunities for wider public involvement will follow. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we can build a stronger future for Bury Football Club. View the full article
  5. We welcome Ryan Lowe and Nicky Adams back to Gigg Lane as Ryan prepares for his first full season as Wigan manager and Nicky as his first-team coach. The Latics completed their official pre-season programme on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Tranmere Rovers. Wigan may see this is a gentle bonus fixture, but it gives our players a chance to test themselves against a team from a League One club. There’s quiet satisfaction at Gigg Lane with the outcome of our pre-season programme – played six, won three, drawn two, lost one. The 3-2 defeat at Radcliffe on Saturday was perhaps a fitting outcome to a great, competitive game in which we more than held our own. It means Radcliffe hold the trophy in memory of their late chairman, the inspirational Paul Hilton for the next 12 months. Catch all the interviews & highlights below. In Opposition – Wigan Athletic Wigan have been in the Football League for the last 46 years and have had some remarkable ups and downs. They were in the Premier League from 2005 to 2013, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final as a prelude to relegation to the Championship. They’re now in League One, and three years ago survived as a club only thanks to a takeover by Wigan-born billionaire businessman Mike Danson. He came to the rescue after the club was served with a winding up order by HM Revenue and Customs. Ryan Lowe’s association with Bury goes back many years. He served us brilliantly as player, player-coach and manager. Nicky Adams had four spells with us, and joined Ryan at Wigan after calling time on his long playing career. On the Day & In the GroundOur Matchday @ Gigg guide is available to read to find out everything you need to know going on in and around the ground. Tickets are still on sale via our ticketing page on our website. Main Stand ONLY open for this fixture, with Wheelchair access in the South Stand via the Cemetery End. 7. With just a week until the competitive season gets underway, we travel to Radcliffe for the first of our final two pre-season fixtures. The tie pays tribute to late Radcliffe Chairman Paul Hilton who passed away suddenly at the end of September, a week before the two sides met in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. His passing left a lasting impact on everyone at Radcliffe, following the loss of a man who dedicated the last eight years of his life to the vast improvement and success of the football club, the community, and the town.

A minute’s applause will take place for Paul ahead of kick-off. Radcliffe will offer a tough test, going into their second season in the National League North. 8. Bury Football Club is proud to announce a new charitable partnership with Jason Yeo and Prost8, a UK-based charity dedicated to raising awareness and expanding access to minimally invasive treatments for early-stage prostate cancer. This partnership marks a significant step in our ongoing commitment to community wellbeing, men’s health, and early cancer detection. Through this collaboration, we aim to help break the stigma around prostate cancer, encourage open conversations, and support Prost8’s vital work in funding modern, life-changing treatment options across the country. Why Prost8? Every year, thousands of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, many of them with early-stage disease where modern treatments can offer excellent outcomes with fewer side effects. Prost8 is leading the charge in making these options more widely available and educating the public on the importance of early detection. Huge thanks to Bury FC volunteer Warren Stone for not only facilitating the partnership but raising £130 which is being donated to The Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal. Thanks also to club partner NB Signs for generously producing the Prost8 advertising board that is now featured on the Main Stand at Gigg Lane. 11. We are delighted to confirm the signing of centre-back Louis Isherwood. The 23-year-old has spent the last three seasons at Widnes, including a title win last season before the club’s unfortunate demise. Isherwood started out at Wigan, where assistant manager Tim Lees coached him in the club’s Under 9s & 10s team before a move to Liverpool, where he was coached by Tim once again in the Under 13s. He returned to Wigan before a move to Chorley’s youth setup, then progressing into their first-team setup. He had two NPL loan spells at City of Liverpool & Bootle. The latter being under our Head of Recruitment, Brian Richardson. Upon signing, Louis said: “I’m really proud to be joining a club with such a rich history and a massive fan base. It’s a top-quality group, from the players to the staff. The moment I played with the team, I felt like I fit in straight away. I know I’ve got a lot to offer, and I’ll do everything I can to push the team to a successful season.” Manager, Dave McNabb added: “Really pleased to get Louis into the club. He’s a centre back who’s got a bit of everything. He’s big, strong, dominant, quick and can play. “Even though he’s only 23, he has a lot of games under his belt, including 44 appearances last season for Widnes, where he was a key part of their NPL West title-winning side. He knows the league, and I’m sure those experiences will help him fit in straight away.” View the full article

  23. We are delighted to confirm our involvement in the Football Supporters’ Association’s Women’s Trophy, as part of our pre-season friendly with Chester this Sunday. It’s the first friendly of the summer, for Jason Jarrett’s side as he looks to assess the squad. 12 players have been retained from a very successful season for our Women’s side. Click here to view the retained list. Off the field, this weekend our fixtures are dedicated to our Month of Action in support of Mind, the national mental health charity, aimed at promoting mental wellbeing and reducing the stigma around mental health issues. All proceeds from these matches will go directly to support the work of Mind at a local level, helping them provide essential services and support to those in our community who need it most. FSA Women’s TrophyThe inaugural FSA Women’s Trophy was launched in 2023, and runs alongside the long-standing Brian Lomax Trophy and FSA Shield games in the men’s game. All three trophies celebrate football club community-ownership. The introduction of the fixture stemmed from a project called ‘Nevertheless, She Persisted’ which was a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the ban on women’s football, as well as the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the lifting of the ban. The project saw two fixtures (one in the South and one in the North) take place between four community-owned women’s teams (Enfield Town Women v Grays Athletic Women and FC United of Manchester Women v Clapton CFC) back in the summer of 2021. The current holders are Clapton CFC Women, who beat Enfield Town 3-1 at the Dave Bryant Stadium last July, which meant they retained the title having beaten FC United of Manchester in 2023. Richard Irving, Network Manager at the FSA said: Our women’s first team play in the North West Women’s Regional League Premier Division, whilst Chester play in Division 1 South of the same league. Deborah Dilworth, head of women’s football at the FSA added: On the Day & In the GroundOur Matchday @ Gigg guide is available to read to find out everything you need to know going on in and around the ground. 25. We welcome Chester FC back to Gigg Lane after a gap of sixteen years for this afternoon’s friendly match. The two clubs have met each other in various competitions on sixty-five occasions, so let’s take a look as some of those meetings. FIRST EVER GAME between the two clubs came immediately after World War Two began. The 1939/40 Football League season had been abandoned after just three games were played and clubs were arranging friendly games in order to give the public some relief from the conflict. On December 16, 1939 the Shakers travelled to Sealand Road and won a goal-filled game 4-3. THE FIRST FOOTBALL LEAGUE GAME came during the 1957/8 campaign, Bury’s solitary season in Division Three North, with the two clubs meeting on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. With ex-Shaker Stan Pearson in the Seals’ line-up, Chester (in 22nd place) beat Bury (in 2nd place) 2-1 at Gigg Lane and earned a 0-0 draw at Chester. MOST GOALS IN A GAME was the 4-4 draw at Sealand Road in December 1987, when the Shakers scored twice in the closing three minutes through Peter Valentine and Liam Robinson to claim an unlikely point. MOST GOALS BY ONE PLAYER stands at 4, with Andy Bishop scoring four for Bury in his 8 league and cup games against today’s visitors. For Chester, Gary Bennett and a certain Ryan Lowe also each scored 4 goals against Bury, with Ryan claiming a last gasp 90th minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Gigg Lane in March 2009 – the very last Football League game between the two clubs. SENT OFF players versus Chester stand at four for Bury, Chris Lucketti, Colin Woodthorpe, Andy Bishop and Ryan Cresswell. Les Steele is the only Chester player to be dismissed – for celebrating his second goal in the FA Cup game in December 2006 at Gigg by jumping into the visiting fans and earning a second yellow card.
