The club is affliated with the #HerGameToo movement, an organisation founded in May 2021 with the aim of raising awareness and educating others on the importance of inclusivity and diversity in sports. Their video above, was viewed hundreds of thousands of times and the quest to eliminate sexism in football had begun! We are proud to be one of hundreds of clubs, in both the professional and semi-professional / grassroots settings, to be affiliated in the UK. Whilst starting within football, and by a group of female football fans spread across the UK, HerGameToo has resonated significantly across the sporting landscape, with like-minded initiatives now set up covering cricket, rugby and ice hockey. The start of the campaign highlighted the inequality felt, particularly by women, in the stands at football grounds across the country. But this is not limited to football supporters on the terraces, we want to see the same acceptance and inclusion on the pitch and behind the scenes. We start the build-up to this weekend by introducing the team of ambassadors and advocates for the club, starting with Samantha Harman who volunteers as matchday volunteer co-ordinator at Gigg Lane. Sam sat down with buryfc.co.uk to answer questions around how she got involved with #HerGameToo. Club #HerGameToo Ambassador, Sam Harman Hello Sam, please can you give a quick introduction of yourself and what involvement you have for Her Game Too? Hi, I’m Sam Harman and I am the club’s Her Game Too ambassador. My role is to work closely with the club and Her Game Too to ensure there is no sexism within the club aimed at female players, fans, or volunteers and to also help promote Her Game Too. What is your main goal as the Her Game Too ambassador for Bury FC and what are your hoping to achieve in your role as ambassador for women who go along to football matches at Bury? My main goal is to ensure that everyone feels included, happy and safe within our club regardless of your sex, sexuality, and beliefs. Every female within the club should feel safe and comfortable when watching or playing football. As a fan-owned club, we want everyone to feel welcome at Gigg Lane. The Her Game Too advocates and I are here for all our female fans and female players to give them the confidence to report to the club and Her Game Too any incidents of sexism that may be aimed towards them in. We also provide free sanitary products in all female toilets at Gigg Lane, and we are also responsible for bringing awareness to our fans about the Her Game Too organisation and what they are doing to help stamp out sexism in all sports. The Her Game Too campaign has really taken off, how pleasing is it to see such a campaign for women especially after seeing recent campaigns like Kick It Out and Rainbow Laces? Her Game Too has really grown over the last few years with lots of clubs, from the Premier League down to non-league, joining and supporting the organisation and it’s reassuring that there is someone to report sexism in sport to. The work that the organisation and each club put in to stamp out sexism in the game is so important. How did you become aware of the Her Game Too campaign? Before becoming the ambassador, I had heard about Her Game Too on social media but when I was asked if I was interested in becoming the Her Game Too ambassador, I started to learn just how important it is to be affiliated with them and what good work they have been doing to curb sexism in all sports and not just football. Why did you decide to get involved in Her Game Too? The club initially asked if I would be interested and of course I jumped at the chance. It is important specially as a fan-owned club that we ensure everyone feels safe when coming to watch games. Have you ever been subjected to any kind of sexism at a football match or on social media yourself? Unfortunately I have been subjected to sexism at matches, home and away, and on social media. I have had comments such as get back in the kitchen and I bet you don’t even know the offside rule. I feel things have improved massively, most people are now much more accepting of women who support or participate in football. We have seen women’s football really grow recently especially with the lionesses winning the Euros and being runners-up in the World Cup. How good is that to see? It’s amazing to see how far women’s football has come over the last few years and it’s good to see how many more grassroot football teams are popping up all over the country. My niece loves football, she is part of the girl’s team who are today’s mascots. How good is it to see Bury FC promote women’s football as much as they do with the men’s team? I love how much our club promote the women’s games and I feel it’s so important to continue doing so, they are a huge part of the Bury FC family. What would you say to any female fan going to football matches who hear things they don’t want to or who are subjected to any sexist abuse? What would you advise them to do? If you hear or are subjected to any sort of sexist abuse or sexism, please report it straight away to the club and Her Game Too; please take this seriously and don’t suffer in silence. The club, myself and Her Game Too take all complaints and discrimination seriously. It’s not just about highlighting sexism and discrimination towards women at football matches but Her Game Too also promotes women’s participation in football too. Yes, that’s correct, Her Game Too was set up to help stamp out sexism and also helps to promote participation in football. This can be as a player, coach, manager or even a match-day official. Her game too are also affiliated with many teams from the Premier League right down to grassroots children’s teams. The time has come to choose your away colours for the 2024/26 seasons. Our current policy is to rotate kits every two years, to reward supporters for buying replica kits and keep them up-to-date for longer. As we started the 2023/24 season with two new kits, home and away, we need to break this rule just once so that home and away kits are changed in alternate years. The current away kit will be kept as a third kit. This means we are now choosing a new away kit for next season, and want help from our members to finalise the design. On Saturday Dave McNabb’s men made it thirteen Nortwest Counties Premier Dvision games undefeated with a 1-0 victory over Glossop North End. We have been on a run that has seen us score 40 goals, score in every game and keep six clean sheets on our way to the top of the table. We currently have a three point cushion over second place Wythenshawe Town with a game in hand. We now focus our attention on their near neighbours and fellow promotion chasers Wythenshawe. In the reverse fixture earlier in the season the spoils were shared in a one all draw with now former Shaker Shakeel Jones-Griffiths scoring our only goal that evening with Wythenshawe leveling up in the 89th minute with a Sam Dikov penalty. This promises to be a fantastic display of NWCFL football as well as being a potential six pointer between two of the leagues in form teams! Alcohol Sales Resume At Gigg Lane Restrictions placed on the sale of alcohol during the game have begun to lift. for more information click here In Opposition – Wythenshawe Originally founded in 1946 as Wythenshawe Lads’ Club by Reg Gauntlet, a local window cleaner, gathering together a group of kids kicking a ball about in the street, started playing friendlies, held meetings with parents in a wooden hut in the grounds of Cringlewood House, Yew Tree Lane. They then set up home by hiring a room in an old farmhouse in Daine Avenue, Rackhouse. A couple of years later Noel Timpson, of Timpson Shoes, purchased two ex-WW2 Nissen huts and sited them within the farmhouse grounds. Promotion was gained in May 2018 when the FA allocated the first team to a restructured North West Counties Football League. This meant that the club was competing at semi-professional level for the first time, they finished a creditable fourth in the First Division South in their first season. In 2019 the first team returned to the national stage when they re-entered the FA Vase. The following season 2020-21, they made their debut in the FA Cup, in the Extra Preliminary Round beat Shelley at home 4-2 in a memorable penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in 90 mins, exited in the Preliminary Round v. Trafford at home 1-4. The first full season, 2021-22, following two coronavirus pandemic hit seasons, they reached the NWCFL Division One South play-offs, losing to FC Isle of Man in the semi-finals. They improved on that the following season, 2022-23, arguably the clubs most successful, with a first team double, winning automatic promotion to the Premier Division by becoming champions, their first ever semi-professional title, then adding the First Division Champions Cup, reserves won the Altrincham District FA Senior Cup, Sunday team champions of the Stockport Sunday League, Division Two. Junior section won a club record 13 trophies. Sacha Lord, co-founder of the music festival Parklife and The Warehouse Project, in April 2023 joined the Board and installed as Chair in June. Barratt, appointed as Chair in 2019, remained on the Board as Vice-Chair. In June 2023, the club changed its name, dropping ‘Amateurs’, becoming Wythenshawe Football Club, with the playing name Wythenshawe. We are pleased to confirm after an initial inspection this morning, the pitch has been passed fit to play for this afternoon’s visit of Glossop North End. Their remain areas that are softer than others, with patches of standing water still present despite the pitch being covered. Ground staff will continue to work on these areas up to kick off. After the trials and tribulations of a trip to the Isle of Man last weekend, the lads earned a well-deserved break at the start of the week ahead of this weekend’s visit of Glossop North End to Gigg Lane. Manager Dave McNabb recognised the team’s efforts in first of all getting to the Manx island, before putting in a special effort to come away with a valuable 2-0 win and a brace from Sam Burns. In adverse conditions, you find out a lot about who’s around you. Whether that be on the pitch or in the stands. Both players and fans made a special commitment in being there to support each other last weekend, and we must do so again this Saturday. Glossop visit Gigg Lane again, after being our opponents in our first competitive game back at Gigg Lane all the way back in July. A special occasion no doubt, with a resounding scoreline to boot. However, it was to come to nothing in the eyes of the league soon after with an ineligible player contributing to the game. The game was removed from the list and ordered to be played again, with an additional three-point penalty handed down to the club at the same time. A fact that has rankled with supporters no doubt. However, we go into this game in great form and despite points deductions, sit top of the league heading into the game. Glossop spent two seasons each in The Combination and the Midland League, before moving to North Road and being elected into the Football League Second Division in 1898. Having been promoted in the 1898–99 season, they spent one season in the First Division. During this period the club was bankrolled by Sir Samuel Hill-Wood, who was later to become chairman of Arsenal. The club retains some connections with Arsenal. Glossop were relegated in 1900 and spent the next fifteen seasons in the Second Division, before exiting the Football League during World War I. Post-war, they spent 1920 to 1957 in the Manchester League, being crowned champions in 1927–28. They moved from the Lancashire Combination back to the Manchester League in 1966, and then spent four seasons in the Cheshire County League from 1978 before the North West Counties was formed in 1982 in which Glossop were founder members, they had a 33-year stint in the league before winning the Premier Division title at the end of the 2014–15 campaign. They were beaten finalists in the FA Vase in 2009 and 2015. In April 2023 GNE were relegated from Step 4 after a period of eight years, ending manager Stuart Mellish’s two-year stint at the helm. With continuing rain in the Bury area over the past couple of days, today’s uncover of the pitch has exposed some areas of concern and a pitch inspection has been able to be arranged for first thing on Saturday morning. The ground staff and volunteers were on hand to remove the covers this afternoon after the rain stopped. They continue to work on the pitch to alleviate these problems and we hope for the weather to match predictions overnight and give it the best chance to drain. Alcohol sales at Gigg Lane will resume for this weekend’s visit of Glossop North End. Kiosks in the South Stand and Cemetery End, will serve alcohol alongside their range of soft drinks and hot food. Sales will end in the kiosks at the start of the second half. On the advice of our stakeholders, alcohol sales will be limited to TWO drinks per transaction. Starkies will be open as normal in the Main Stand with drinks not being permitted to be taken into the stands during the second half. The club is pleased to announce Neil Sears as its Club Secretary and General Manager. The search for a General Manager began last year and paused whilst board elections were held. It was picked up again this year with input and guidance from a number of people, including a former EFL CEO. The ideal candidate was already within our ranks. Neil has fulfilled the role of Club Secretary on a part-time basis since October and that gave us a chance for him to work with us and see how we got on. His dedication and work ethic has impressed everyone. Neil already had an strong CV, with experience of senior corporate roles in the retail and leisure sector. He retrained in 2020 to pursue his passion, a career in sport, obtaining a first class honours degree in Sports Business and Law from UCFB. He’s picked up recent experience working with Burnley FC, UEFA, Beswick Sports Agency and the Fan Experience Company, in addition to his secretarial role with Bury. He will work full-time for the club, with the two stadium managers also reporting into him. This appointment promises another step up in the professionalism and pace of change in the club, as we continue with our strategy of blending highly qualified staff with sector expertise in with our hard working volunteers. Neil made comment to buryfc.co.uk on his appointment: “I’m delighted to be joining the club full time. I’ve been working with the club over recent months and I’m looking forward to taking on the responsibility of the new role. It’s been an incredibly busy period with positive results on the pitch, and having to navigate the more challenging side of the role such as the FA charges we’ve been faced with. “It’s the time of the season for us all to come together and ensure that Dave and the team have everything they need to ensure we achieve our goal of promotion. “I will be spending the first few weeks meeting the key stakeholders, reviewing our operational plans to ensure that we meet our financial goals, and putting together the plans for next season and beyond. I also look forward to meeting and talking to fans and establishing some clear lines of communication so I can update you at every opportunity. Our fixture with Glossop North End this Saturday is a replay of the opening game of the season, following the fielding of an ineligible player. As communicated at the time and now confirmed, all season ticket holders will not to be charged again to attend this re-arranged fixture. Unfortunately the players have been unable to get to the Isle of Man today. We are now trying to get them onto a 7am flight tomorrow morning. The players were told definitively at 3.30pm today at Manchester Airport that there was no way they would be able to board the last flight to the Isle of Man at 6.10pm tonight. If there was the slightest chance of flying they would have stayed. FC Isle of Man issued a statement suggesting there was room on the flight and the players refused to return and board it. This is misleading as there was no realistic chance of the players returning to the airport and onto the plane in time to fly when requested. We are disappointed with the approach they have taken, given it serves only to further frustrate the supporters who have travelled in their numbers to the island. The players care deeply about playing, and having spent many hours waiting at the airport would not have left if they thought there was any opportunity to get on a flight. Many live a good distance away from Manchester Airport and travelled by public transport to get there. We are acutely aware of how frustrated our supporters will be having spent time and money travelling to the Isle of Man. The Football Association recently made the club aware of historical public communications by current Bury FC player Charlie Doyle in 2019, which contravened rules E3 and E3.2 as set out within the FA for All: Grassroots Disciplinary Guide. The comments made were on the social media platform Twitter, and these comments triggered a breach of the rule regarding ‘improper conduct aggravated by a person’s sexual orientation or disability’. The charge was raised directly with the player and Charlie was asked to respond to the charge in late 2023. The club have assisted Charlie throughout the process. The penalty for this charge is listed as a ‘6-12 game suspension’. The FA include the below list of mitigating factors under this charge when considering applying action: How long ago the offence took place Age of the participant The intention to cause distress / offence Following review of the information, Charlie responded to the charge by pleading guilty last month, and his hearing was held on Wednesday evening. On the basis the player pleaded guilty and considering the presented mitigating factors, the FA have handed Charlie Doyle a six-match suspension with three of these suspended for 12 months. Providing the player is not charged or found proven of a similar offence within a 12-month period, the additional suspension period will not apply. Charlie has offered the following statement to supporters in response to this verdict: “I want to assure supporters that my actions from over five years ago are not representative of the person I am today. I am a different person from that period in my life, for many reasons, and this is reflective of my approach to my life, my work and my football. “I regret fully the comments made. They do not reflect my current views and my attitude to the issues raised have altered significantly, very much as a result of the ever-changing and ultimately more inclusive world we live in. “I have accepted the charge and the punishment handed down by the disciplinary committee this week and will use the time to focus my energy in supporting the team from the sidelines and being ready for the run-in.” Manager Dave McNabb has also offered his comments following Charlie’s verdict: “Having worked with Charlie before at previous clubs and now here at Bury, I know his character and his personality. He is a great lad to have around and by both acknowledging and accepting his involvement during this charge process, he has shown great maturity. “We are pleased that the committee have recognised this maturity when considering the level of punishment. Whilst disappointed that we will miss him from our squad for a couple of weeks, we will hopefully look forward to a fresh and raring-to-go Charlie Doyle for the remainder of the season.” These sanctions are applied with immediate effect and Charlie will be unavailable for the next three Bury games, starting with our trip to the Isle of Man this weekend. We are delighted to announce that Harry Wright has again been named January NWCFL Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Month sponsored by Reusch UK. He also picked up the award in October last year. Harry was in the team for the three games played in the month, with wins in all. Clean sheets in against both Irlam and Litherland, until the only blot on the copybook being the single goal conceded against Skelmersdale. Thankfully, 10 had gone in the other end! As well as Harry picking up his award, the club are thrilled to be awarded the ‘Club of the Month’ for the first time this season, in reflect of results on the pitch during the same period. 19 goals and nine points were enough to seal the prize which was awarded when league chairman, Paul Lawler, and League Development Officer Charlie O’Brien visited Gigg Lane on Saturday for the game against Burscough. It has been the one we have all been waiting for, a trip to Douglas for the Shakers this weekend as we take on FC Isle of Man at The Bowl, kick-off 6pm. The anticipation has been building for weeks, if not months, as supporters make their travel plans across the Irish Sea to take on the Ravens. We head into the fixture on a run of 11 unbeaten matches and picked up a win at Cheadle Town on Tuesday in the wet and rainy conditions of South Manchester. A first start for Benito Lowe since October was capped off with a goal. The fiesty striker was fouled for the penalty that he picked himself up from, to dispatch the opening goal of the game. Goal-machine Andy Briggs grabbed another minutes later to seal the win. FC Isle of Man visited Gigg Lane back in September, in Dave McNabb’s first game as manager. A tight affair, and the deadlock was broken by Gaz Peet midway through the first half in a 1-0 win. The highlights can be found below. The Ravens were officially accepted into the English non-league pyramid for the 2020/21 season. However, due to Covid restrictions and border controls into the island, the club were temporarily suspended from the league as it was not possible to fulfil all their fixtures by 31st May 2021, as required by the English FA. Subsequently the season as a whole was eventually suspended due to further Covid outbreaks in early 2021 and the 2021/22 season became their first in the non-league system. Despite going top of the division temporarily in February after a dramatic 4-3 victory over eventual league champions West Didsbury, the Ravens ultimately finished second in the league but were promoted at the first attempt after defeating New Mills in the play-off final in front of more than 3,000 spectators at the Bowl. Current manager, Paul Jones, stepped in to take the top job permenantly in February 2023 after a period as interim manager. The club’s first manager Chris Bass left in the November before, following a difficult start to life in Step 5. Their first season in the Premier Division in 2022-23 however ended in consolidation, with a 13th place finish after a strong end to the season. The Ravens go into the weekend in 12th place in the league, with 14 wins and four draws from their 32 games so far. They have also hit a bit of form as we head into this weekend’s clash, with a run of three wins in the last three games, culminating in a 4-3 dispatching of Prestwich on the mainland over last weekend.
