  1. Despite the late fightback from the hosts Bury first half dominance saw them run out 4-2 winners. First team analyst Chris Watt gave his reaction to the game when speaking to the club. Chris Watt: “I thought the first half was some of the better stuff we played in a few weeks to be fair in terms of creating chances, going forward and being solid defensively but in the second half we seemed to drop off a little bit we started to lose our shape and not really dealing with long balls in behind us and then you invite pressure onto yourself and there was some last inch clearances and it just kept coming back but its been the story of the last couple weeks really other than Longbridge we haven’t really put a full performance together so there’s stuff to work on like always.” Chris than spoke about the reason behind the 5 changes to todays starting 11 saying “ Just freshening it up really as last Saturday was a really tough game for the lads in terms of dealing with the style of play Lower Breck impose and I thought today we could try and get it down a bit and the pitch was a lot better so we tried to get some lads in who have missed the last couple of weeks who are ready to come on and do a job and I think that showed in the first half. We made a few changes with Brian [Ly] coming back in and Pat [Jarrett] starting and it worked well and maybe that didn’t help us as much in the second half because maybe fitness came into that because some of the lads haven’t had a lot of minutes recently, so they found it tough the same way the whole team did in the second half. Chris than gave us his thoughts on Patrick Jarrett performance in the side, he said “Yeah, you saw it in the way he came on last weekend against Lower Breck he was starting to find his feet because you know he’s not that long off of a long term injury and sometimes when you bring lads in you have to give them time not just to bed into the squad and get to know everybody else but to give them time to get their bodies where it needs to be and that’s not just physical but mentally as well you know because sometimes you can compensate for long-term injuries and it plays on your mind and things like that and I’m not saying that’s the case with Pat but sometimes it can be and you have to be kind of patient at times and let them get to where they need to be and slowly introduce them and he made his first start for us today and I thought he did really well.” Chris than spoke on Summer arrival Lewis Alessandra decision to retire after today’s game. Chris Watt: “What a career, it’s really sad to see him go obviously it’s his decision that he’s made and clearly he feels that’s what is best for him we’d have loved for him to stay but he needs to do what’s right and he feels like now is the time to wrap a really long career in the game and he’s done really well for us and he’s been the perfect pro and we wish him all the best.” To finish the interview Chris than looked forward to the midweek game against Litherland REMYCA saying “We can’t focus too much on other results we’re looking ahead to this month and we know we need to be better and December going to be a really big month for us as we’ve got a lot of home games so we need to make sure the points are on the board for those and Remy are a really tough place to go and a hard team to play against with tough conditions but we’ll make it right and train and work on the things we need to work on to try and prepare as much as possible for Wednesday and hopefully get the three points.” View the full article
  2. After the Shakers 4-2 win over Burscough Patrick Jarrett gave his thoughts to the club on the game after his first start for the club. Patrick Jarrett: “I thought as a whole it was positive in the first half we looked a real threat every time we went forward and we kept winning it back high up and we went forward with purpose but yeah the first half was good but in the second half I don’t think we really found our groove really what’s a bit of a shame considering we did so well in the first half so it’s about piecing both halves together and putting in complete performances but on the whole it was positive.” Patrick than told us what the half time message was after a dominant half what saw Bury take a 4-0 lead into the break, he said “it was just more of the same really and you know we were winning the ball high up and the press looked decent and just more of the same really, but it didn’t really go that way what was annoying really and they came out in the second half what is what the manager said and we couldn’t find a way of dealing with that but we grounded out another 3 points and that’s the main thing.” Patrick than looked ahead to the midweek game against Litherland REMYCA saying “It was disappointing to lose against Lower Breck, so we needed to put that right and get the 3 points and that’s what we did. It’s a massive game Wednesday and it’s a quick turnaround we’ll train on Monday, but we need to be right for it and we need to be in the right mindset for it and get the 3 points and carry on the momentum View the full article
  3. Bury have extended their unbeaten streak to 21 matches after a dominant display against Longbridge Town today’s Player Of The Match Lewis Earl gave us his thoughts on the game when speaking to the club. Lewis Earl: “I thought it was a confident performance, and I thought we did everything right we were clinical in front of goal and solid at the back. Off the ball we were unbelievable, and it was the kind of performance we needed really after a couple of games where we’ve been good in halves and good in spells it was good to get a solid performance and blow someone away.” He then spoke about whether today’s performance, really shows what this club is about saying “Yeah definitely, we spoke about that at the end of the game obviously as I say the first half on Tuesday night here wasn’t good enough, but we’ve shown today that were a team that’s good enough to do it and we need to be doing it more often instead of scraping through games and we can do stuff like that but we’ve got to be doing that all the time.” Lewis then spoke about whether the issue of not starting fast enough in previous games is something that will be left in the past he said “Hopefully, that’s all we can say but we’ve got to look towards the next game if it’s something and it’s nothing were doing consciously it’s something that just kind of happens, but we need to get that out and we know that we need to start faster we’ve talked about it a lot that we need to start imposing ourself on games.” To finish the interview Lewis looked forward to our upcoming run of away games and whether today’s performance was important heading into this run. Lewis Earl: “Yeah definitely, we talk with the lads as well about how away games always feel like home games with the number of fans we bring as well, the fans are unbelievable, so it really helps but yeah a result like this helps with tough fixtures coming up.” View the full article
  4. DJ Pedro spoke to the club about today’s performance after scoring a brace in a dominant performance for the Shakers. DJ Pedro: “I thought today the lads were excellent, pressing from the front we mentioned that the other day in training about pressing from the front, staying high and keeping the backline high and that kept us high and winning the ball higher up the pitch and starting the games better and put two halves together and we did.” He than spoke, us through both his goals in today’s game saying “The first one was a bit of a surprise, we won the ball high up the pitch like I said from pressing and the ball got played through to me and I saw so much space ahead of me so I took a touch and I know I could take it early so I took it early, the keeper got a little touch on it but I knew it was going to end up in the net but yeah I’m happy.” DJ than spoke about whether he relishes playing centrally in the Bury attack because of Bury attacking strength he said “Today I thought are attack was very good, we scored goals but we created numerous more chances and I feel like in previous more games we’ve not converted those chances and we know that so we worked on that and we talked about it as a team as in not playing as individuals but as a collective and we’re getting better with that week by week and even today we thought in the changing room because we believed we could’ve scored more and being that ruthless team that doesn’t stop hitting the back of the net.” To finish the interview DJ looked forward to our upcoming away games and whether today’s performance was something to build on saying “Yeah definitely as we’re very motivated as a team right now, we want to push on and we don’t want to drop points anywhere and we want to get three points every week and perform to the level we want to and not drop to a level where we’re not putting two halfs together every single game and give ourselves the best chance.” View the full article
  5. After seven successive wins, we’re determined to turn the tables on a team who stunned us on the road two months ago. We did it to West Didsbury and Chorlton and to Lower Breck, and now it’s REMYCA’s turn.
Another week without a midweek game has given us good preparation time and the lads will be chomping at the bit to get out in front of the Gigg Lane faithful and set the record straight but this doesn’t mean we will be taking our opponents lightly as we very well know, there are no easy games or walkovers in the North West Counties Premier League.
Our game this weekend is dedicated to Her Game Too. Founded in 2021 Her Game Too is an award-winning campaign tackling sexism in sport, including football, rugby, cricket and ice hockey. Find out more about the amazing work that they do here Grab a selfie with the Her Game Too picture frame and tag them on socials using #HerGameToo. Shakers fans, get down to Gigg Lane and show them and REMY what we can do. Come on you Shakers!!!
View the post match media from last weekend’s win at South Liverpool including interviews with Dave McNabb & Mitch Allen. In Opposition – Litherland REMYCA Our 21-game unbeaten run had already been ended by Lower Breck when we faced Litherland in dreadful conditions back in early December. It was the second of three successive away matches, and we’d won at Burscough four days earlier. So beating us 3-1 at the Litherland Sports Park gave REMY a massive boost. They had a good game plan and stuck to it.
The Liverpool outfit are currently 19th in the league with 41 points from 37 matches – well clear of the relegation places, but below where they would wish to be. They come into this game boosted by last weekend’s 4-1 home win against Charnock Richard – only their second three-pointer in six matches. 6. This weekend our fixtures will celebrate women in football, and in sport in general, as we endorse the ‘Her Game Too‘ message. The club is affiliated with the #HerGameToo movement, an organisation founded in May 2021 with the aim of raising awareness and educating others on the importance of inclusivity and diversity in sports. We are proud to be one of hundreds of clubs, in both the professional and semi-professional/grassroots settings, to be affiliated in the UK. Whilst starting within football, and by a group of female football fans spread across the UK, HerGameToo has resonated significantly across the sporting landscape, with like-minded initiatives now set up covering cricket, rugby, ice hockey and gaming, as well as branches in Wales & France. The start of the campaign highlighted the inequality felt, particularly by women, in the stands at football grounds across the country. But this is not limited to football supporters on the terraces, we want to see the same acceptance and inclusion on the pitch and behind the scenes. We’d like to give a special mention to our Bury FC HGT ambassadors: Samantha Harman, Kirsty Green, Nicola Parker, Steph Jackson, Cath Kenyon and Amy Thomas. Club #HerGameToo Ambassador, Sam Harman On Saturday, we will welcome our women’s first team as well as our youngest female players, aged just 4-7, who attend our Bury Ballers sessions at Gigg Lane on Monday evenings. The latter have recently played their first ever match in a Bury shirt; the start of a long and fruitful journey we hope and the former, now in their second year in the North West Women’s Regional League, are currently in very good form. They started the season brightly with wins over Tranmere Rovers and Fleetwood Town but several long-term injuries halted their progress and a difficult run before Christmas has now been turned around. Unbeaten in the last 6 matches, with a notable win and draw against the second and third placed teams in the league, as well as good cup runs with a dominating 5-0 result in the league cup against local rivals Radcliffe, puts us in a good place for the business end of the season. They have also reached the semi-final of the Manchester County Cup and will meet Hyde FC, to hopefully win a place in the final for the first ever time. Alongside these teams, we proudly have another 350 or so women and girls who regularly represent the club. Our under 9s, under 16s and under 18s in the youth section and we have no less than 11 other adult female teams. Additional initiatives introduced more recently are walking football for those over 40 and Squad Girls’, an FA supported programme to get more teenage girls playing football. These opportunities span from toddlers to retirees, and nothing makes me prouder than seeing so many females kicking a ball on the pitch at Gigg Lane. As a club we really are advocates who proudly demonstrate that it really is HER GAME TOO. Speaking ahead of the weekend, our HerGameToo ambassador Sam Harman said: “There is now a huge difference, in attitude towards women participating and watching in football. “More women are now watching and playing football at Bury we want to provide a safe environment for them to do so it’s great to see so many females involved. “Also having so many female teams is huge for us and that’s every female that plays for us from the first team down to those women who do walking football it’s so inspiring to see so many females playing at Gigg Lane.” If you hear or are subjected to any sort of sexist abuse or sexism, please report it straight away to the club and Her Game Too; please take this seriously and don’t suffer in silence. The club, our ambassador Sam (pictured above) and Her Game Too take all complaints and discrimination seriously. As always, keep across the latest from the club on the website, X / Twitter & Facebook. #ShakersTogether | #HerGameToo | #PartofItView the full article

  12. Bury won 1-0 to extend their lead at the summit to 7 points, goalkeeper Mitch Allen spoke to the club to give us his thoughts on the game. Mitch Allen: “Yeah, it’s nice to get the win, but ideally four or five definite goals we should have had. It’s nice to get the clean sheet, as always, we’ve made it seven on the bounce now, hopefully next week we can make it eight.” He then spoke about how Bury keep racking up the clean sheets this season he said “Yeah, definitely. It’s always frustrating because a lot of the goals we’ve been conceding have been at the very end of games, which has cost me my clean sheet. So, yeah, to get a few on the bounce and getting them added up now for the end of the season, it’s nice.” To finish the interview, he then spoke about what its like playing behind a back 3 with Louis Jeanne, Aiden Walker and Reece Kendall with him saying “Yeah, it’s good, like three new names in the squad. We’ve all gelled, and it’s worked well.” View the full article
  13. Bury held on to go 7 points clear at the top of the table after a 1-0 win over South Liverpool, Manager Dave McNabb spoke to the club to give us his thoughts on the game. Dave McNabb: “I think last week I came out and said that the all-round quality of the game was exceptional for the level of football we’re at. I think today’s probably been the complete opposite, possibly one of the worst games of football we’ve seen this season. I think it was so stop-start, I don’t think the officials had a great day in terms of it was quite itchy and quite tenchy and too many free-kicks, constantly stopping and restarting the game. Fair play to South, I think they really organised, they had a game plan, I think they were dangerous on the counter-attack from set-pieces. But I think we’ve made hard work for ourselves, I think we started the game really well we should’ve been 2 or 3-0 up I think, and then second half, there’s some of the chances in the second half as well. It’s tough because sometimes when you’re in the position you are, particularly at this point in the season, it’s all about three points but its fine margins the end they’ve had a shot at the 95th, 96th minute, if that goes in the top corner we’ve dropped points from a position where we must have had 20 attempts on goal and probably three or four missed from within two or three yards. So, pleased with the win, it’s another game, another game shorted off, seven points clear, massive positives there, no injuries and we’ll just move forward and strike it off.” He then spoke about todays changes to the starting 11 with Bobby Carroll coming in to replace Connor Pye who dropped to the bench with him saying “Yeah, so I thought Rusty did really well last week, obviously playing in the central areas and then in the second half played from wide, he looked really dangerous. When you’re coming on some of these pitches, they’re quite tight and it’s quite tough to play on at times. I think trying to build the game is massively important and Bobby’s probably the best player in the squad at that. So, to get Bobby back in the team, I think it was just a little bit of a tactical change and obviously I thought I’d admit Bobby was probably the best player on the pitch.” Also, then speaking about how the change allowed Cam Fogerty to play higher up the pitch, he said “Yeah, I think obviously when you’ve got the likes of DJ [Pedro] who really holds it up really well, having someone running off and either fair man runs without the ball or running with the ball to try and drive and create space, then Cam’s really good at it. He’s played multiple roles throughout his career, so I’ve got no worries about him playing a little bit further up advanced. He can play as a 6, he can play as an 8, he can play as a 10, so again having someone like that in the squad, loads of energy, loads of quality, just really helps us to try and set up slightly different games.” Dave then spoke about his triple change when there was 20 minutes left to play, he said “Fresh legs, I think we looked a little bit tired and, to be honest, a little bit shaken up. I thought we looked like we were going to potentially drop and drop. We were getting a little bit deep, making a few little mistakes in possession, so it was a bit more of a rocket to try and make the changes and try and make sure that we held on.” To finish the interview, he looked ahead to the next two fixtures both being played back at Gigg Lane. Dave McNabb: “Yeah, I think so, and look, our performance wasn’t great today, but the training, I thought we looked really good defensively, the shape and the unit work that we’ve been doing this week leading up to the game is really good. Obviously, we need to work on a few more attacking principles, maybe finishing from a yard out and being a little bit more comfortable. But we’ve got a big week ahead and then, like you said, we’ve got two home games, we’re not going to think about the second one, I think it’s all about next Saturday now and we’ll start planning for that tomorrow.” View the full article
  14. Everyone at Bury Football Club was saddened to hear of the passing of former Shaker Hughen Riley, after battling Leukaemia in recent years. Hughen was a Lancashire lad, born in Accrington, but he started his professional career with Rochdale, appearing in Dale’s first team for five seasons, amassing 114 league and cup appearances. He then spent four years with Crewe Alexandra, adding another 131 games before transferring to Gigg Lane for a fee of £4,000 on 1 December 1974 at the age of 25. Manager Bob Smith stated at the time that he had signed him because the midfielder was “strong in the tackle” and that proved to be an understatement. Our ‘older’ supporters will recall Hughie’s no-nonsense approach only too well. The ball was there to be won and nothing was going to stop him winning it, even if it meant that the man came with it. His wholehearted approach, work rate, determination and desire to attack made him a firm fan favourite. His Shakers’ debut came in an away game at Blackburn Rovers and he then scored on his home debut in a 3-0 Bonfire Night win against Peterborough United. After 63 league and cup games, and 5 goals, Bob Smith allowed Hughen to move on to AFC Bournemouth in April 1976 and he spent two further seasons at Dean Court before moving into non-league with Dorchester Town and Weymouth. Arthritis ended his career, and he had the first of three hip operations at the age of just 33. He also broke both arms later in life, suggesting that his determined approach to life didn’t change much. Hughen and his wife, Joyce, settled in Salisbury, Wiltshire and he became a publican for the next forty years, running 14 different pubs along the way and enjoying life as a grandad. On 16 December 2020 Hughen was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a rare type of blood cancer and he tackled the disease with the same determination that he had possessed during his playing career, raising money for Cancer Research UK along the way. Rest easy Hughen. Once a Shaker, always a Shaker View the full article
  15. Nine games to go, and the run in has very much started – and started well. We go to South Liverpool’s Jericho Lane ground in a strong position after a run of six wins on the bounce. We turned the tables on West Didsbury and Chorlton, and the 2-1 scoreline didn’t reflect our dominance for most of the game. Nevertheless it was sweet revenge for the result in the reverse game just a few short weeks ago. What told in the end was the high quality and fighting spirit of our players. Josh Gregory’s superb equalising free kick and DJ Pedro’s clinical penalty winner were both of the highest class. But there’s no room for complacency as Ramsbottom United and the rest of the top six continue to breath down our necks. So, travelling fans – let South Liverpool experience the power of the 12th man. Up the Shakers!!! In Opposition – South Liverpool Our opponents are struggling, and we can be sure they’ll be fighting for every point. This is their first season in the premier division, and losing their last five games on the bounce has left them in 21st place out of 24. South joined the NWCFL three years ago and won the League One North play-off final against Ashton Town on penalties at the end of last season. The club came into existence just 90 years ago this year and was relaunched in 1991. They’ve had the same manager – Martin Ryman – since the beginning of the third millennium. 16. Last Saturday we welcomed guests from English National Opera and Walk the Plank into Starkies Bar and onto the terraces at Gigg Lane. Soprano Carrie-Ann Williams kicked a ball around with Ladies first teamers Georgia Payton and Holly Davenport and met club legend Nicky Adams, before serenading fans in the bar with some impromptu pre-match opera. Whilst we treated them to a fantastic home win. Called Perfect Pitch, the project aims to engage with football fans to explore the impact mass singing has on team performance and spectator experience. The team behind the project were blown away by the energy and enthusiasm of the Shakers fans and are bringing a mass choir to the fixture on 29th March vs Squires Gate to join in the chants and provide some half time entertainment. They hope that this will lead to a full outdoor mass participation spectacular later in the year. ENO and Walk the Plank are looking to engage with the club’s supporters to hear your experiences of supporting Bury and singing at the game. You may see them about the ground over the next month or so. 17. People from across the local community are invited to the official launch of the Bury Sporting Memories Club, which is taking place at the Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre on Wednesday 26th February between 10:30am – 12pm. Bury Sporting Memories is a weekly session run every Wednesday from 10:30am to 12pm at Gigg Lane, which welcomes older people aged 50+ to reminisce, replay and reconnect through the power of sport. The club uses the power of remembering and talking about sport alongside physical activity to support older people aged 50+ to live better lives, including those living with dementia, depression, or living in isolation and lonely circumstances.  It has been running since November and has been a great success so far with many older people from across Bury taking the opportunity to join the free sessions to chat about sport and get stuck into all the activities on offer. The official launch has a special connection to a local sporting theme, with a football exhibition currently taking place at the Art Museum. People who attend the official launch will not see the impact that Sporting Memories is having on those that attend regularly, but they will also have the chance to view the famous LS Lowry painting ‘Going to the Match’ alongside other wonderful football memorabilia. 20. Representatives of the club met with Ian Harrop on 15 February 2025 to discuss Ian’s ban from the hospitality areas of the stadium. In the interest of moving forward in a positive manner Ian was informed that he is now welcome to return to the hospitality areas of the stadium with immediate effect. During the meeting Ian expressed concern about comments made regarding him on the usual social media platforms. As a club we do not condone the abuse of any individual, be that a board member, employee, volunteer or supporter. The decision to impose the ban was not made pursuant to the club’s official sanction policy as the circumstances giving rise to it were outside the scope of the policy. As such, it has no impact on any stadium ban which has been imposed pursuant to the sanction policy, all of which remain in place on the terms notified to the individuals concerned. The club and Ian have resolved the matter amicably and now regard it as closed. View the full article

  24. We last faced West a few days after some good performances, including a convincing home win against local rivals Prestwich Heys. But we suffered a 4-0 loss in South Manchester, a result Dave and his team are itching to set right. By coincidence, the return fixture follows another good performance against Prestwich. There was only ever one team in it as we won 2-0 at Adie Moran Park. That victory made it five in five games, and the long-awaited clean sheet was a welcome sign of progress – along with the signing of gifted left-side defender Reece Kendall. So we now face West on top of the table, on our own pitch at Gigg Lane, in great form, and with a strong squad strengthened even further. All this gives us every reason to be cheerful about our chances of taking revenge for the result in Chorlton and making it six wins out of six. Plenty of noise will help, so please come and shout for the lads. Up the Shakers! View the post match media from last weekend’s win at Prestwich Heys including interviews with Dave McNabb & Josh Gregory. In Opposition – West Didsbury & Chorlton West have had mixed fortunes since their big win against the Shakers. Their next match was at North Shields in the fourth round of the Isuzu FA Vase, and they lost 2-1. Since then they’ve won three, drawn one and lost one. The 2-1 defeat was in a home game against none other than Prestwich Heys. The club dates back to 1908, became West Didsbury AFC in 1920, and added Chorlton to the name after acquiring their own ground in 1996. They joined the NWCFL in 2012 and were promoted to the premier division after just one season. On the Day & In the Ground Our Matchday @ Gigg guide is available to read to find out everything you need to know going on in and around the ground. Kelvin Etuhu will be our guest in Starkies from 1:20pm. Saturday is also our dedicated fixture for Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week. As a club, we remain heavily committed to working with and for the Community, and at a time dedicated to raising awareness of hate crime and how to combat it. It may not be widely known but Gigg Lane is a Hate Crime Awareness Centre, and this on Saturday morning our Operations Manager, Casey Lynchey, will lead some training on the issues with our volunteer team. Next Monday (17th) we will be hosting an event at Gigg Lane in conjunction with Bury Council and Manchester United Street Reds all aimed at raising awareness of Hate Crime in Greater Manchester, and how to combat it. Starkies Bar Before kick-off: Starkies will be open at the normal time of 12.30pm for supporters to access from the Manchester Road End entrance before kick-off. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis up to capacity, which will be managed on the door.
