After that great win at home to Lower Breck, we face a different kind of challenge – a team even newer to this league than we are, and packed with lively young players. Lower Breck were beating everybody in sight, but we beat them in some style. The first half was probably our best 45 minutes of the season so far. Yes, we gave them a window of opportunity by sitting back at 3-1. But we made it, and overall were the better team by some distance. The last six weeks have been tough for our players and coaches as a result of illness and injuries in the squad and new signings and departures. We had one really bad day in South Manchester, but overall we’ve proved ourselves more than worthy title contenders. We go to the Stockport Sports Village looking for a double – we beat them 2-1 at home in September – and with the memory of our performance last weekend still fresh in our minds. In Opposition – Stockport Town Town’s first season in the NWCFL Premier Division follows their promotion as Division One South runners-up. They’re doing well, sitting in 9th position and with a last six record of three wins, one draw and two defeats. In contrast to Shakers, they go into this game after a home defeat. On Monday evening, two second-half goals gave sixth-placed Irlam victory after Town had taken the lead in the 19th minute. This was disappointing for the club after their 2-1 win at South Liverpool last weekend, so they’ll very much want to bounce back. Admission & Tickets This fixture is ALL-TICKET. Just after passing the McDonalds Drive-Thru, take a left at the traffic lights and proceed down Stockport Road towards Woodley, passing both Morrisons and Homebase on your left before passing under the railway bridge at Bredbury Railway Station. Continue on Stockport Road until you meet the next set of traffic lights. After the lights take your first left on to Mill Lane, and continue along Mill Lane over the train bridge, taking the second right on to Woodlands Avenue, then the first left on to Lambeth Grove. Follow the road until you see the entrance to Stockport Sports Village. We strongly advise all spectators to turn left in to the car park as this is nearest to the turnstile entrance. We are delighted to announce the signing of defender Aiden Walker from Farsley Celtic. The 25-year-old who can play at both right back and centre back, started out at Barnsley before a move to Mansfield in 2019. Walker picked up non-league experience in loan spells at Leek Town and Grantham Town during his time in the East Midlands. In 2021, he joined NPL side Brighouse Town before a move to Guiseley in the summer of 2023, where he was a main stay in their defence playing 42 times in the league. He made the move up to the National League North this season with Farsley Celtic, where he has made eight appearances, including in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Warrington Town. Speaking to buryfc.co.uk, Walker said: “‘I’m delighted to be here. Challenges don’t come much bigger than the one we face against the team who back in November ended our 21-match unbeaten run. Lower Breck are in good form, having won their last six matches, but they have to play Pilkington less than 48 hours prior to their trip to Gigg and our win last weekend as well as a strengthened squad send us into what we know will be a tough game brimming with confidence. The Shakers’ performance in the victory at Barnoldswick was excellent, especially in the second half. And the scoreline could have been even more impressive had it not been for Jack McGovern’s penalty heroics and a late consolation depriving us of a clean sheet. This first home game of 2025 marks a fresh start, with a stronger and hopefully more settled squad as we go into our last 14 games. The competition at the top of the league is hotting up. In Opposition – Lower Breck Lower Breck are currently fourth in the table, with 61 points from 30 games compared with our 67 from 32. So they, too, are well on target to achieve their goal of promotion. Their last six matches – every one a win – have yielded 18 goals, with only two against. The club came into being 14 years ago to provide a youth team for the Tuebrook area of Liverpool and plays at the Anfield Sports Community Centre. They removed the age barrier with the aim of becoming the top non-league club in Liverpool – a target reflected in the motto on their coat of arms: nulli secondus (second to none). Lower Breck joined the NWCFL in 2019 and were promoted to the Premier Division four years ago. Ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Barnoldswick, we have added two new players to the squad. Defender Louis Jeanne joins us on dual-registration from NPL side Wythenshawe Town. The 25-year-old played a massive role in their promotion last season and was a key part of the defensive unit that conceded the fewest goals in the league. Attacking midfielder, Tyler James also signs for the Shakers, joining us from fellow NWCFL side Padiham. The 21-year-old joins us after scoring 21 goals in 34 games this season. Tyler has also previously played for Macclesfield, where he came through the clubs BTEC programme & Prestwich Heys. We’ve had two weeks to move on from the defeat we suffered in South Manchester. Postponement of the home game against FC Isle of Man was unfortunate but necessary. So now we’re all set to go again as we travel to Barnoldswick. How do we handle this match? – Coaches, players, and yes, fans as well – it is crucial that we start the final third of the season with a bang. And a repeat of the 7-0 drubbing we dished out at the Silentnight Stadium last season could be just the catalyst we need. We still second in the league, and recent new signings have further strengthened an already strong squad. Our bid for promotion is most definitely on – and eminently achievable. First-team manager Dave McNabb has provided the following squad update to supporters: Ben Hockenhull – Ben has left the club to explore other opportunities. Ben has played an important part in the season, featuring in 24 games and scoring 4 times in the process. Jack Dunn – Jack has now left the club on a permanent basis. Jack has been so unlucky with injuries both prior to joining us and since he signed. Jack had a very bright start when he joined the club following two years out with a significant knee injury. Unfortunately Jack picked up an unrelated injury at the back end of pre-season which hampered his start to the season. Following a handful of appearances Jack joined Ashton Town on loan to build his game time. Unfortunately, Jack has picked up another injury and will now take some time out to recover and consider what comes next. Pat Jarrett – Pat has also now left the club on a permanent basis. Pat is another player who has suffered a significant injury while playing full-time football in the Scottish Championship. Pat has been trying to regain his full fitness and sharpness over the last few months but balancing consistent game time whilst not fully fit has proved challenging. Pat leaves in search of much-needed regular game time to allow him to gain full fitness and get back to the levels he is capable of. Ben Hockenhull Jack Dunn Pat Jarrett Sam Coughlan – Sam will be unavailable for selection as he searches for full-time football higher up the football pyramid. Sam who came through the Everton academy has always expressed his interest in getting back into a full-time environment. At 19 years of age, this is something I and the football club want to support. Sam has a number of offers to trial at a number of professional clubs and Sam will now look into these options. In the meantime, Sam will still train with the team in and around these trials and remains a Bury player. Morgan Homson Smith – Morgan will move to Longridge on loan in order to get back to full fitness and sharpness following his time in Dubai and his minor thigh injury that has kept him out since the Prestwich Heys game on 28th December. Morgan Homson-Smith Sam Coughlan Eoin Charles Eoin Charles – Eoin has unfortunately suffered a further setback during an Under 23’s game last week. It’s a reoccurrence of the thigh injury he picked up during his first training session. Eoin will now be referred to a specialist to look at the injury. It’s been a frustrating start for Eoin but he remains a firm part of the plans both now and long term. Josh Gregory – Josh stepped up his return to fitness this week with an appearance for the Under 23’s on Monday night. Josh has been unavailable since dislocating his shoulder in the game against Pilkington in early November. Josh has been working hard with his rehab and in training and is not far from being available for selection for the first team. Brad Carroll – Brad is progressing really well in his recovery. He’s back in full contact training and has made two appearances for the u23’s Brad has been injured since early August. He was worked incredibly hard throughout with his rehabilitation to get this far. Aaron Chalmers – Aaron is back in training this week following his horrifying injury on New Years Eve. Aaron has made a remarkable recovery considering the extent of his injury and after being given the all clear by the burns unit at Wythenshawe Hospital he will be available for selection very shortly. We can confirm tomorrow’s NWCFL fixture with FC Isle of Man has been postponed. The pitch at Gigg Lane remains frozen after another night of sub-zero temperatures. As noted in our statement last night, an early decision had to be made for this fixture to be considerate to FC Isle of Man’s travel plans for its players, staff and supporters. A Happy New Year to all supporters as we head into 2025 with the same thirst for success we had at the start of the season. We look forward to welcoming you at Gigg Lane through January as we head well into the second half / business end of the season. Ahead of this exciting run beginning, the following has been provided as an update, starting with some notes on supporter society matters. Football Supporters Society of Bury – Elections Re-started The election process for The Football Supporters Society of Bury (FSSB) re-started on Monday 6th January. Members have been informed of the process, and this can be accessed for all supporters to review on the FSSB website here. Candidates have until Monday 20th January to put themselves forward for election and to vote in this upcoming election, sign-ups for membership are open until 5pm on Sunday 2nd February. They will close for the duration of the election period after this. The Special General Meeting (SGM) is set for early March, whereby three elected members will join the FSSB board. FSSB AGM – New Date to be confirmed It was confirmed in mid-December that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for FSSB would be delayed following a review with the auditors. A meeting has taken place with the auditors both before and after Christmas, with resolution on this still to be decided upon. It continues to be monitored and members will be inform of updates to this when they are available. New Head of Operations – Casey Lynchey On football club operations, Casey Lynchey has taken on the role of Head of Operations at Gigg Lane. Assisted by the stadium management team, new caretakers to aid with the 7-day operation at Gigg Lane, the football board members and our wealth of volunteers, has ensured the ongoing obligations and daily activity at the stadium, both on and off the pitch, have continued to thrive. More details on the works being put in place to manage the ground through the winter months, and any impacts the weather has on fixtures at Gigg Lane is expanded on further down this update. Football Committee in place As part of the changes in some of the club structures, Interim Football Chair Gareth Castick is now heading up a Football Committee, alongside Manager Dave McNabb, FSSB Director Jon Newby and Head of Recruitment Jimmy Holmes. This is designed to streamline club decision-making on playing staff, fixture and training arrangements. This has worked well and will be continued until the end of the season and reviewed. Budgets will continue to monitored by this group, to ensure that set out at the start of the season is maintained. Football Board Member steps down Football Board member Adam Ingram had informed the board of his decision to step down from this role, and that of Head of Media back in October. He has been working with the media group to ensure a satisfactory hand over in time for new year. Adam leaves with our thanks and best of luck for the future. Options to bolster this group into the future will be reviewed, with all ongoing media obligations to continue as they are for now. Applications for a new Commercial Manager to be released As part of the next stage of developing the commercial department of the club, we will be seeking to add a club Commercial Manager as we progress through 2025. This will be aimed at building on the foundations set so far and continue to build upon the Partnerships Programme released last year. The scope on this role is being developed currently, with applications to be sought soon after. Pitch Management and Protection through winter Despite spells of bad weather nationally this winter, the ground and its 3G pitch has remained open to fulfil fixtures and bookings the majority of the time through December and so far into January. Whilst the 3G pitch has enabled a much more consistent playing surface this season, and allows numerous fixtures to take place each week, it is still susceptible to postponements in bad weather – particularly in freezing or snowy conditions. On a couple of occasions bookings have had to be cancelled due to the pitch being frozen, and regular visitors to Gigg Lane will note the long-standing issues of the pitch not having the benefit of sunlight across its full area during the low-sun period in the winter season. There has been discussions with the 3G installers McArdle, around suitable treatments that could be applied and where possible these are being used to maintain as many fixtures and bookings as possible. The covers used towards the end of last season were only to provide protection from rain and are not suitable to be used to protect the pitch in either freezing or snowy conditions. The suitability of sourcing covers to protect the pitch in these conditions, does also need to be considered alongside the time taken to lay and remove covers to suit the schedule of bookings and fixtures. Whilst the club’s first-team fixtures are an obvious priority, the wider context of the pitch’s community obligations is a consideration to be factored into this process. The stadium management team are doing all they can to manage this process, and we thank them for the effort in clearing the pitch of snow on Monday (6th) to enable that night’s U23s game to go ahead. Any impacts on first-team fixtures will continue to be communicated to supporters as soon as they are known, and whilst postponements could still occur, we expect that these will not likely have the same significant impact they had last season. They’ve hit a rocky patch, having won only one of their last six matches. But the recent 3-2 home win against St Helens – just above them in the table – gave them a boost. The club has been made aware of some recent incidents at our home games at Gigg Lane, which have gone against the values, and in some cases, the rules set in place which supporters are required to adhere to. We therefore have to address these important matters to ensure the continued success and inclusivity of our club. This season, we’ve made significant strides in many areas, particularly in improving fan behaviour. These efforts have been recognised by the FA, the league and other stakeholders. In our first season back at Gigg Lane, incidents off the pitch led to severe consequences, which culminated in two matches being played behind closed doors. Thanks to the measures we’ve implemented, these challenges are now largely behind us. We sincerely thank the overwhelming majority of our fan base for supporting our efforts to make Gigg Lane a welcoming, family-friendly club. A loud and proud fan base is invaluable, as any conversation with Dave McNabb or the players will confirm, and your energy on match days is deeply appreciated. Despite this, there has continued to be isolated incidents that are entirely unacceptable. This includes acts of discrimination. Regardless of gender, race, age, or sexuality, everyone is welcome at our club. Just look around the stands, and you will see the diversity that makes our club special. We urge all fans to continue making Gigg Lane inclusive. If you witness any anti-discriminatory behaviour, we ask you to call it out by reporting it immediately. By reporting to a member of our security team or volunteer base immediately will help us stamp out these issues straight away. Please do not take matters into your own hands – let us handle it appropriately. As a reminder to all supporters, the following rules are in place inside the stadium and should be adhered to at all times. Pyrotechnics and Smoke Bombs Possession of a pyrotechnic or smoke bomb when entering a stadium is illegal and in line with this, is strictly prohibited at Gigg Lane. These items are dangerous and can cause harm if misused. There has been an incident of one being thrown onto our new pitch over Christmas, which threatens to damage the surface. This is completely unacceptable. Our pitch is vital for our men’s and women’s teams, as well as for junior, recreational, and community teams. Please help us protect this valuable asset. Smoking and Vaping Smoking and vaping is permitted only in the designated smoking area. In the South Stand, this is located past the toilet block which is clearly marked behind the Manchester Road End. Smoking in other areas, particularly near the South/West stand corner and food outlets, is not allowed. Non-compliance will result in removal from the ground. Please adhere to the new signage indicating smoking and non-smoking areas. Alcohol Consumption We encourage everyone to drink responsibly when at Gigg Lane, for the safety and enjoyment of all. Underage drinking has been identified as an issue and will not be tolerated at Gigg Lane. Please do not purchase alcohol for others who are unable to do so themselves as we combat this issue.
