After seven successive away games, we look forward to a performance of high-calibre against visitors Irlam following a high-scoring start to the season.
And fans will be hoping manager Dave McNabb’s line-up includes 19-year-old winger Alex Cherera, who scored a stunning hat-trick in the FA Cup last weekend.
The goals played a big part in Bury’s 4-2 extra preliminary round victory at Congleton, which followed a crushing 5-1 league win at Padiham four days earlier.
These successes made up for the dramatic but equally disappointing 4-4 draw at sunny Squires Gate, which kicked off our season in the NWCFL Premier Division two weekends ago.
Now – after a total of seven successive away games – the team at last gets to play on that shiny new surface which has so expertly been constructed since the grass Gigg Lane pitch was ripped up in May. Come on you Shakers!!!
Following Saturday’s cup win against Congleton, we caught up with Dave McNabb & Alex Cherera – you can see those interviews below alongside match highlights.
In Opposition – Irlam FC
Irlam FC are a good side who had a major problem with consistency last season, finishing in 13th place in the NWCPL table. In a way, however, they were consistent – 15 matches won, 15 drawn and 15 lost.
On their day Irlam can beat any team in the league. But so far this term they’ve played three and lost three, scoring only twice and conceding eight times.
In the corresponding match last season, Irlam lost 3-0, but they won 1-0 at the RG3 Digital Stadium in March as the Shakers hit a rocky patch. Declan Daniels, one of Bury’s scorers in the Gigg Lane game, is now on Irlam’s books.
The club started life as a works team. It traces is history back to 1935, entered the national league system in 2008/09, and is rooted firmly in the Irlam community. Head here for Irlam history.

Match Info: Irlam FC (H), Sat 6th Jan, 3pm KO
With the weather seemingly calming down since Tuesday’s game fell victim to days of endless rain, we shift our focus to this coming Saturday and the visit of Irlam FC.
After going through the whole of December unbeaten in the North West Counties Premier League, Dave McNabb’s charges have eighteen games left in the hunt for the League title and promotion. With us currently sitting in second place, two points behind Wythenshawe who we have a game in on hand following Tuesday’s postponement.
The promotion hunt will continue and keep our current momentum going against an Irlam side who have struggled to get a game on in recent weeks and currently sit in 18th after playing only 20 games so far this season, eight less than the Shakers.
Former Irlam man, Dec Daniels will be loooking to keep his run of great form going against his old club. The forward has scored three goals and has picked up the oppositions Man Of The Match Award in his first four starts in blue and white.
You can see Dec’s third goal in the highlights from our last outing, away at AFC Liverpool below.
In Opposition – Irlam
IRLAM FOOTBALL CLUB began life as Mitchell Shackleton Football Club, founded in October 1969 by a group of employees working for Mitchell Shackleton Limited, a well established engineering company based in Eccles, which manufactured marine and diesel crankshafts.
The founding members of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club were Bob Cowlishaw (Chairman), Bill Russell (Secretary) and Charlie Flynn (Treasurer, who served the Club also served as Secretary with distinction from 1981 until his death in 1994). They were ably supported by a Committee comprising of Alf Johnson (now Club President), Ged Moore (Kit Manager) and Stan Catlin (Team Manager). Although the Cub has been in existence for over 30 years, Mitchell Shackleton FC can trace teams playing under the Company’s banner as far back as 1935.
Initially, the Football Club was financially supported through the Company’s active Sports and Social Club, however the recession of the late 1970’s led to the Company restructuring its business interests, and unfortunately a reduction in the workforce.
These events inevitably led to the dissolution of the Sports and Social Club, and a splintering of the various sporting sections with each individual group becoming self-financing.
The Club initially entered the Eccles Amateur league before moving in 1972 to the Manchester Amateur league where there reputation began to grow. Third Division (1973-74) and Second Division (1974-75) Championships were won consecutively, and a reserve section was created as the Clubs profile grew. During this period, a re-structuring of the League saw Mitchells competing in the Industrial ‘B’ Division, in which the Club were runners-up in 1979-80.
In season 1983-84, Mitchells finished Industrial ‘A’ Division runners-up, but ended the season on a high by winning the Gosling Cup. Industrial ‘A’ Division runners-up once again in season 1985-86, and defeated finalists in the Gosling Cup of 1988-89 signalled the end of the Club’s 17 year association with the Manchester Amateur League with Mitchells again progressing upwards by joining the Manchester League in 1989.
In their second season, the Club was promoted as Runners Up to take their place in the Premier Division for season 1990/91 under the guidance of Paul Traynor and Kenny Davies. In 1993, Mitchells reached the Gilchrist Cup Final, only to lose out to Woodley Sports in the Final.
In 1994 Paul Traynor departed due to work commitments and Kenny Davies assumed control, ably assisted by Billy Hall. This management team took Mitchells to their highest ever league position in the Premier Division, runners-up to Abbey Hey in season 1994/95. The Club was rocked prior to the commencement of 1997-98 season when Kenny Davies walked out; taking with him several first team players to a local, at the time rival Club Monton. Dave Rowan and Craig Woodley, who had forged a successful partnership with the reserves, were promoted and asked to rebuild the side. A difficult season was to follow, but after being adrift at the bottom of the Division for most of the season, a dramatic win against fellow strugglers Wythenshawe Town and mid-table Monton Amateurs saw the Club stave of relegation. After such a close call, Mitchells would never go below sixth position in their subsequent seasons i Mitchell Shackleton were proud winners of the Albert Booth Sportsmanship Trophy in 1998-99, a testament to the spirit in which the Club plays the game.
In June 2000, Club Secretary Ian Street was named Premier Divison Secretary of the Year at the AGM of the Manchester League.
A major change at the Club occurred in 2002 when Mitchells were informed that Salteye Park, their existing ground at Barton was to be purchased and subsequently used for what has now to become the new Salford Reds rugby League stadium.
The hunt was on for a new ground, and with compensation from their move, plus football foundation assistance, Silver St in Irlam, once home to Irlam Town became an obvious choice. The start of the 2001-02 season saw the Club change its title to Irlam MS in anticipation of a proposed move to Silver St, the site of the then defunct Irlam Town FC.
The new ground at Silver St was officially opened in 2003 with a visit from Brian McClair’s Milk Cup winning, Manchester United youth team.
A further name change saw Irlam MS become Irlam FC, and the appointment of Warren Dodd as secretary of the Club, from Irlam Rangers Junior Club saw development increase at the ground.
The Club made the decision in 2006 that they would pursue a place in The North West Counties football League, and entry via ground improvements at Silver St meant that the Club entered their highest level of competition in their history in readiness for the 2008/2009 season. That inaugural season, under the guidance of manager Dave Mann was a tremendous success, finishing in 8th position on 52 points in our first campaign. The Clubs performances over following seasons fluctuated in the NWCFL as the Club adjusted to the higher level of competition. Previous managers Dave Mann, Ryan Gilligan and Nick Parker have all poured their effort and commitment into the Club, culminating in the appointment, Steve Nixon, a local manager with an impeccable coaching CV in readiness for season 2014/15 after taking over mid-way through the previous season
With manager Steve Nixon at the helm for his 3rd campaign for the 2015/2016 season, the future began to look bright both on and off the pitch at Silver St. The opening of a brand new Clubhouse at the ground again pushed the Club to greater heights, creating a real non-league footballing set up at Silver St.
Season 2015/16 season proved to be a watershed moment for the Club. Since joining the league in 2008/2009 the focus has been on youth and development of the ground, and it was 2015/2016 season when all the efforts and sacrifices made came to fruition. Irlam manager Steve Nixon shaped a fantastic group of maturing young players as they put together a magnificent run of results to take second spot and gain automatic promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history.
Season 2016/2017 proved to be the most successful in the Clubs long history, an eighth place finish in the Premier Division showed the growing strength of the Club, whilst a treble winning U21’s development side swept all before them in the Cheshire U21’s league. Point deductions for our U18’s were all that stood between them and a possible title win as they finished 4th, just six points adrift of Nelson FC.
For season 2017/2018 a restructuring of positions at the Club has seen new faces take control of on the field matters. 1st team manager Steve Nixon and asst Chris Boardman have moved out of the hot seats in order to take over the commercial side of the Club, with Steve Nixon taking over from Ron Parker as chairman of the Club. New manager Michael Dodd, and asst Matty Kay, both part of the 1st team backroom staff last season were chosen to take control for the new campaign. They have assembled a strong backroom staff around them and we wish them well for future campaigns.
The 2018/2019 season was arguably the most successful season the Club has embarked upon since its entry into the national league system in 2008/2009. Although league position remarkably remained the same as season 2017/2018 (13th), it was in the national competitions where the young Irlam squad gave a glimpse of things to come in the future. An unprecedented FA Cup, surpassed only by an even greater campaign in the FA Vase, saw the side mentioned in dispatches up and down the country.
A three match winning streak in the FA Cup, including a 2-1 victory away at Prescot Cables set the side up for an away trip to Gateshead Club Dunston UTS, a match that saw Irlam’s campaign end with a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of the North East side who would go on to a famous victory over Chester FC in the next round. The FA Vase would capture the imagination of all at the Club as the team confidently pushed into the fifth round of the FA Vase, a five match winning run , beating Clubs from up and down the region as they saw of Burscough , Yorkshire sides Handsworth and Hemsworth, Hull based Winterton and Midlands based Cadbury’s Athletic.
The fifth round however would prove to be a bridge too far for IRLAM. Welcoming Surrey based Chertsey Town FC to the Ambitek Stadium, a rearranged fixture after snow put paid to the original date, the Southern based side just had the edge on the day, a 2-0 victory moving the Curfews in to the quarter finals and ultimately into the Final itself where the eventually lifted the Famous Trophy at Wembley Stadium.
An excellent season, built on solid foundations gives the Club renewed confidence going into the new season, and with manager Michael Dodd retained with his backroom staff, the omens are good for 2019/2020.

Match Info: Kendal Town (A), Sat 4th Nov, 3pm KO
Dave McNabb and his team will look to make it four wins on the bounce this weekend as we travel North into Cumbria to take on Kendal Town in a top-of-the-table clash.
This will be our second meeting with The Mintcakes this season and The Shakers will be looking to avenge a 3-2 loss in the reverse fixture back in August, a game in which Andy Briggs bagged a brace.
Briggs was back among the goals last weekend as were Connor Comber and Anton Smith as we put a good West Didsbury & Chorlton side to the sword in a match fraught with action including sin bins, red cards and penalties (both saved and scored)
You can see the highlights of that game below.
Following this week’s announcement of the points deduction, as well as the opening game of the season against Glossop is to be voided and replayed, it is now more important that ever that you get behind YOUR club. Be the twelfth man and roar your Shakers on.

Match Info: Kendal Town (H), Tue 22nd Aug, 7:45pm KO
After Saturday’s disappointment in the FA Cup, league action returns to Gigg Lane on Tuesday night as Kendal Town are the visitors for our first competitive game under the lights.
Charnock Richard were the victors at the weekend. Goals from Connor Comber and Jack Tinning gave Bury a two-nil lead, scoring at the beginning of each half. Injuries to both centre-backs, Niall Battersby and Jack Tinning, early in the second-half led to a defensive re-shuffle before Greens top-scorer Jordan Darr scored just before the hour mark to peg a goal back for the hosts.
Luke Power slammed home a second with eight minutes remaining, and with the tie looking to be heading to a replay, the aforementioned Power slotted home the winner with a back-post header in the fifth minute of added time to send Charnock into today’s draw. We caught up with gaffer, Andy Welsh after a disappointing afternoon at Mossie Park – watch below:
Onto Tuesday night, the visiting Mintcakes have started the season like a train after finishing their first year back down in the Counties in 12th last season. The only blot on the card in the league so far was an amazing 4-4 draw at Barnoldswick last week, with Town leading both 3-0 and 4-1 before being pegged back by a remarkable second half effort from Barlick.
Other than that, it has been a clean sweep of league wins for the Cumbria-based outfit, dispatching AFC Liverpool, Longridge, Padiham, Litherland and lately against Pilkington on Saturday.
They sit top going into the game, and who doesn’t love an early-season top-of-the-table clash? Get on down to Gigg Lane this week and experience a night under the Gigg Lane lights. Full information available below.

Match Info: Litherland REMYCA (A), Sat 13th Jan, 3pm KO
The Shakers chalked up another three points this past Saturday in front of a bumper Gigg Lane crowd of 3304, putting on a sensational attacking display in the second half and putting Irlam to the sword to jump back to the top of the North West Counties Premier Division.
Goals came from all three available strikers; with Dec Daniels slotting home a penalty past his former club, Andy Briggs taking advantage of a wayward back pass to power through and smash home, and finally Joe Hobson with a proper poachers effort in the 98th minute.
Dec Daniels was awarded his 5th Man Of The Match award in a row which is definitely a Shaker’s non-league-era record but we will have to check the record books to see if it’s been done by any other player previously.
We now move on to Saturday and a trip to Litherland Sports Park to face Litherland REMYCA, a side currently sitting 12th in the table with a record of 12 wins, 12 defeats, and 4 draws.
You can watch the highlights from Saturday’s victory over Irlam and the latest episode of Playing Away below.
Playing Away Episode Five
Opponents
The club was established in 1959 as St Thomas Football Club and were initially based in Seaforth.
They were later renamed Bootle Church Lads Brigade, with Bootle YMCA becoming the club’s base.
In 1967 they became REM Social after a local working men’s club started financing the club, before being renamed REMYCA United the following year, the name reflecting links with the REM social club and the Bootle YMCA.
Under the new name the club joined Division Three of the I Zingari Alliance, winning it at the first attempt. After winning higher divisions in successive seasons, the club entered the I Zingari League.
The 1975–76 season saw REMYCA win the league’s Challenge Cup, and the club were league champions in 1987–88. In 1990–91 they won the Lancashire Amateur Cup.
The mid-1990s were a highly-successful period for the club as they won both the league title and the Challenge Cup in three successive seasons between 1993–94 and 1995–96, before winning the Challenge Cup again in 1998–99.
In 2001 they joined the newly re-established Division Two of the Liverpool County Combination. The two divisions merged into one the following season, but the club withdrew from the league midway through the 2002–03 season.
REMYCA returned to the I Zingari League and were Division Two champions in 2005–06. The league then merged with the Liverpool County Combination to form the Liverpool County Premier League, with the club placed in Division Two. They won the division in the league’s inaugural season and were promoted to Division One.
After a third-place finish in 2009–10 the club were promoted to the Premier Division. In 2013 they were renamed Litherland REMYCA. A fifth-place finish in the Premier Division in 2013–14 was enough to earn promotion to Division One of the North West Counties League.
In 2016–17 Litherland finished third in Division One, qualifying for the promotion play-offs; after beating Sandbach United 1–0 in the semi-finals, they lost 3–0 at home to City of Liverpool in the final in front of a record crowd of 1,303.

Match Info: Litherland REMYCA (A), Wed 4th Dec, 7:45pm KO
Objective achieved! We prepared for this game by bouncing back in style from the defeat at Lower Breck by beating Burscough 4-2 away. The first 45 minutes were probably the best we’ve played all season, even counting the stunning 8-0 defeat of Longridge Town. So we travel once again to Merseyside with heads held high.
But it was disappointing to present Burscough with a gift goal early in the second half, and after that it was a struggle. Quality told in the end, and overall it was another great day for us.
It was good to welcome forward Pat Jarrett back into the team for his first league start for the club, but sad to say farewell to experienced Lewis Alessandra who played his final game at the weekend.
If you hadn’t already seen, experienced midfielder Nicky Adams re-joined the club for a fourth spell over the weekend, and subject to paperwork being approved, he will be avaliable for selection this week.
Now it’s onward and upward as we begin a busy and demanding December placed third in the league and with games in hand. First call is at Litherland REMYCA. We beat them twice last season – 4-2 at home and 6-0 away. Either score would suit us this time round – it’s the points that matter. Come on you Shakers!!
Saturday’s highlights and interviews are available to watch below:
In Opposition – Litherland REMYCA
We can expect a tough game at REMYCA, who are currently 19th in the league with 26 points from 23 matches. They’ve won two and lost three of their last six games, including a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of top-of-the-table Ramsbottom United.
The club’s goal is a mid-table position, and they have a clear policy of giving high-flying teams like the Shakers a thorough examination.
They greatly value their place in the NWC premiership, and after several seasons flirting with relegation appointed one of their own players – popular striker Colin McDonald – as manager. That was four years ago, they and he are still here, and last season finished 12th.

Match Info: Litherland REMYCA (H), Tue 3rd Oct, 7:45pm KO
On a rainy afternoon in the Derbyshire hills, Dave McNabb’s charges fell to a late defeat courtesy of a headed 96th minute Glossop goal. Until the goal The Shakers had held on well after being reduced to ten men following a red card for Bury wing back Gaz Peet early into the second half.
In a game that could’ve gone either way in the with both teams having plenty of chances there were some bright spots in defeat including a debut goal for new man Andy Scarisbrick and a solid debut for Charlie Doyle.
We now move on to Tuesday night and as we look to set the record straight and return to winning ways against Merseyside’s Litherland Remyca.
You can watch Dave McNabb’s post match interview following the Glossop game below.
In Opposition – Litherland Remyca
Litherland REMYCA FC began life in the Seaforth area of Liverpool as St Thomas F.C. (1959).
Players were recruited mainly from Seaforth and Bootle, and the team later became known as Bootle C.L.B. (Church Lads Brigade).
Links were formed with Bootle YMCA which provided a club base and facilities to train.
In 1967, a local working-man’s club offered to finance the running of the club.
One year later, REMYCA UTD F.C. came into being, the name deriving from connections with both REM Social Club and Bootle YMCA.
The team, after successive championships and earning a reputation for playing attractive football, were accepted into the I Zingari League.
The founder members of REMYCA Utd, Bill and Ken Edwards, acted as managers having recently given up their playing careers.
The I Zingari Challenge Cup was claimed in the 1975/76 season as REMYCA Utd began to establish itself as a force within amateur football on Merseyside.
The formation of a Premier League led to the club being invited to become inaugural members.
This demanded improved playing facilities and the club left its spiritual home at Moss Lane, Litherland to move to Maghull High School.
A former player, Steve Smith, became manager and began building a squad capable of competing with the best amateur sides in the region.
REMYCA Utd became the I Zingari League Champions in the 1987/88 season and in 1991 became one of the few Merseyside Teams to win the all Lancashire FA Amateur Cup.
The 1990’s was a significant period in the club’s history, and the most successful, as both Premier League and Cup doubles were achieved in seasons 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96 followed by again winning the Challenge Cup in the 1998/99 season.
This period of dominance and success resulted in REMYCA Utd seeking entry to the Liverpool County Combination League to test itself at a higher level again.
REMYCA are now based at Litherland Sports Park. Our mid-long term aims are to work with local councils to identify a site and build a community facility for all sides under the REMYCA banner as well as the local area.
In 2013, the Management Committee of REMYCA began exploring the potential to grow and develop the club. The aim is for a sustainable club – a community based model offering football opportunity with good coaching to all ages from seven years upwards.
The first stage of the new development plan was to add Litherland to the club name so as to identify with the local area and enhance the community ethos of the club.
A key appointment was Colin Begbie as head of youth development, who’s experience and network of football contacts has proven invaluable.
The club then applied, and secured a league position worthy of promotion to the NWCFL in 2014.
In their first season, the club finished 9th and reached the semi final of the Reusch Cup, only to be beaten by Atherton Colls.
A first ever appearance in the LCFA Senior Cup saw the club beaten by Skelmersdale United. REMYCA went on to reach the semi final in three consecutive years after this defeat.
In 2015, Phil Stafford was given the job as first team manager following a successful stint at Maghull.
In his second season, he led the club to a thrilling battle for promotion, which culminated in defeat at the final hurdle – the playoff final.
That game holds the attendance record in NWCFL history, with 1303 supporters flocking to LSP.
In March 2016, the quarter final of the LCFA Senior Cup saw Everton travel to LSP and fall to a solid, containing REMYCA by a goal to nil.
This game put the club on the map, and boosted their profile and reputation.
Ultimately, at the end of that season, Stafford decided it was time to move on along with Andy Olsen, and, after a search for a new gaffer, Paul McNally was handed the task of leading REMYCA from the beginning of the 2017/18 season.
McNally put his own stamp on the team, and under huge expectations, guided the club to its first ever promotion and the highest level of football in the history of Litherland REMYCA.
Along the way, REMYCA made their first ever appearance in the FA Cup, beating AFC Liverpool 2-0 in a game live streamed across the BBC iPlayer.
In a shock turn of events, McNally left the club by mutual consent at the end of 2017-18, and left the club manager-less for the second straight summer.
James Olsen was chosen to be the man to take over in the summer of 2018 and lead the club in its first ever season in the NWCFL Premier Division, however departed midway through the season. Former manager Phil Stafford returned to guide the club to consolidation within the division. With Staffo’ having departed for a second time, former AFC Liverpool, Burscough and Bangor City Manager Derek Goulding was appointed in 2021 as the man to consolidate The Remy in the Premier Division for going forwards.

Match Info: Longridge Town (A), Sat 5th Oct, 3pm KO
Our visit to Longridge Town for a league match is in no sense a case of “back to the old routine” for the unbeaten Shakers. It will be a tough game against opponents who had a good start to the season but now desperately need to prove a point.
Town are more than aware that Bury go into the game after that dramatic Emirates FA Cup win at Radcliffe last weekend and a good result in a demanding midweek encounter with Chadderton.
In such a situation, a come-down in a real danger. But everyone at Gigg Lane has promotion as the No 1 priority for the season, so the game at Longridge is a Cup Final – just like every league game.
Last season, Bury took four points from their two games against Town, drawing 1-1 at home and winning 2-1 at Longridge.
Highlights and post-match interviews from Tuesday are available on our YouTube channel (links below)
We head up the M6, looking to make 20 unbeaten since the start of the season in all competitions. It’s 13th away game of the season – looking to pick up our 10th win on the road.
We’ve scored 39 goals on the road this season, averaging 3.25 goals per game.
In Opposition – Longridge Town
Town’s last match on Tuesday was a 4-3 Macron Cup win on penalties after a 1-1 draw at home against Holker Old Boys. Before that, they’d lost three successive league games – against Abbey Hey and Squires Gate away and Litherland at home.
The Preston club was created in 1996 by the merger of two teams which had started life in the 19th century as church sides playing in different leagues. They progressed to the NWCFL’s Division One North in 2018, and scored 144 goals on their way to becoming champions in their first season.
Their aim now is to consolidate their position in the Premier Division, having finished in 19th position last season with 44 points from 46 games. They are currently in eighth position, having won eight and lost seven of their 15 games.

Match Info: Longridge Town (H), Sat 16th Nov, 3pm KO
It wouldn’t be surprising if Longridge Town come to Gigg Lane fired up with determination to take revenge for the 5-1 defeat we inflicted on them last month, when they visit Gigg Lane this weekend.
It was a score that perhaps flattered the Shakers back in October, conceding three penalties in the game but after overcoming that storm and Mitch Allen saving two of the penalties, the result was empthatic in the end.
Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw against Charnock Richard proved that we won’t have it all our own way as we look to assume top spot in the league, and with three draws in the last four at home manager Dave McNabb will be looking of more of type of finishes supplied by second-half substitute Alex Cherera.
After a difficult first half, we were lucky to be only 1-0 down to lively Charnock Richard and were rescued by an unforgettable solo goal from our startlet Cherera on 71 minutes. Check out the goal below on the highlights, as well as comment from Tim Lees and midfielder Cam Fogerty.
The challenge now is to extend it to 21 games. So once again we need lots of fans and plenty of noise to help us that run going. So come fans, and come on you Shakers!!!
You can relive all the action from Tuesday and hear post match reaction from Tim Lees and Cam Fogerty below.
In Opposition – Longridge Town
It’s not been a good season so far for Longridge. They’ve lost their last two matches – at home against Glossop North End and away to South Liverpool – and are 16th in the table with 27 points from 22 matches.
Longridge were promoted from the NWCFL’s Division One to the Premiership in 2019, but their first two seasons were curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
They then turned down the chance of playing in the Northern Premier League. Lee Ashcroft – still their manager – explained: “We’re not ready… We’ve got to establish ourselves at this level for the next two or three years, maybe longer.”
Last season they finished 19th. They drew 1-1 at Gigg Lane and we beat them 2-1 in the return fixture.

Match Info: Longridge Town (H), Sat 9th Sept, 3pm KO
We go again this weekend after picking up four points since last Saturday, with a win at home against West Didsbury & Chorlton and a point on the road at Wythenshawe in midweek, following a late penalty.
Shakeel Jones-Griffiths grabbed his first Bury goal with a header from a corner on Tuesday night and a returning Benito Lowe sent Gigg Lane into raptures last weekend when a spirited West fightback set up a nail-biting finish and a last minute winner. Get your highlights for both games at our YouTube channel HERE.
We head into the weekend sitting second in the league, behind early pace-setters, Kendal Town, by five points following the Mintcakes loss away at Colne on Tuesday night.
Andy Welsh, gave us his thoughts last weekend following the win over West Didsbury and how electric games at Gigg Lane are for the lads on the pitch:
We are the season’s top-scorers in the league so far with 25 goals, so if you are looking for entertainment then Gigg Lane is the place to be at this moment at Step 5.
Our visitors, Longridge Town, head into the game in 22nd in the league but did secure their first league win of the campaign last weekend with a 6-0 drubbing of Skemelsdale United. They have lost all three away games this season however, a fact they will no doubt be looking to put right this weekend in the Gigg Lane sunshine.
Get all your pre-match information on the opposition, tickets, programmes, access to Gigg Lane, and much more in our details below.
In Opposition – Longridge Town
Formed in 1996 when the two clubs of the town, United & St. Wilfrid’s came together with the aim of raising the standard of football in the town.
The previous two clubs had existing from as far back as the 19th century, so the experience was by no means novice, and the club quickly moved out of the local religious leagues they had taken part in for nearly a century and through the Preston & District and then West Lancashire Leagues before being promoted to the NWCFL in 2018.
They quickly moved into the Premier Division following a successful first season, finishing as Champions. They have remained at this step since that point.
For more information on Longridge, head to their NWCFL page HERE.

Match Info: Lower Breck (A), Sat 16th Sep, 3pm KO
The Anfield area of Liverpool is nestled in football history and that’s where we head on Saturday.
Andy Welsh’s side face Lower Breck, who played just under a mile away from the home of Liverpool. It was a 1-1 draw last time out against Longridge, the goal coming from Benito Lowe who scored started his first game since his return from injury.
The players have had a well-earned rest with no game in midweek, so two sessions in training this week to prepare for this fixture.
Former Clitheroe player Ben McKenna joined the club last week and you can hear from him speaking to Adam Clark below.
In Opposition – Lower Breck
History
Lower Breck Football Club was founded in the summer of 2010 in the Tuebrook area of Liverpool. The aim on formation was to establish a youthful group of quality, committed players capable of challenging for honours in all future competitions in the years to come.
In the club’s first season they took the South Liverpool 2010/11 Youth Division Title which was a great achievement at the first time of asking. For the 2011/12 season, the club took on the challenge and step up in quality and moved to the highly respected Carlsberg West Cheshire Association Football League.
In the season that followed the club created history winning the West Cheshire League Title, The West Cheshire Youth Plate and The LCFA County Cup. History was made as no other club from the West Cheshire League had ever got their hands on the treble. The club was also been nominated for Merseyside Team of the Year 2011/12.
Again not wanting to stand still the club for the 2012/13 season joined forces with the highly respected and fast-growing Famous Grapes Football Club. The lads in their first season as an open-age side became a member of the Liverpool County Premier League’s 2nd Division. In keeping with tradition the lads won the 2nd Division title another remarkable achievement as this was their first year in adult football.
Not settling for just a domestic trophy the club embarked on a European Tour when they travelled over to Cologne Germany to take part in the 2013 Rheintal Trophy and in doing so brought home the winner’s trophy capping another trophy-led season for the lads.
For the 2013/14 season the club played their football in the Liverpool County Premier League’s 1st Division as Lower Breck FC. With hard work and dedication the club was aiming to be playing Premier League football the following season and that aim was realized when the lads clung on to the last remaining promotion spot.
With the step up to the Premier Division secured the club looked to secure their position amongst the very best the city had to offer and build a squad capable of challenging for a league title in the forthcoming years.
For the start of the 2015/16 season Lower Breck had grown from the one team the Moore family founded back in 2010 to the club now running five playing sides.
A Reserve, Sunday and two youth sides have all been added to the clubs roster of teams playing under the Breck Banner.
With the addition of these sides Lower Breck set their focus on growing into a strong established club and with growth on/off the field and the club pushed full steam ahead. In the 2016/17 season the Breck secured a domestic cup double winning the highly respected I-Zingari & George Mahon Cups.
In the 2017/18 season the club raised the bar even further and achieved greatness in Liverpool by winning all four competitions they played in and also going unbeaten throughout the whole campaign with a run stretching back to October 2016.
LCPL, LCFA, George Mahon & I-Zinagri Cup Champions a truly remarkable feat that some massive clubs in Liverpool never managed to achieve.
Lower Breck FC have made the swift transition from Youth side to North West Counties affiliated member Club in under 10 years.

Match Info: Lower Breck (A), Sat 23rd Nov, 3pm KO
The first of three successive away games provides the Shakers with one of the toughest challenges of our season so far. Lower Breck are among the top teams in the league, and look certain to be among those scrapping for the promotion places come April. So they will be keen to end our unbeaten run of 21 games.
The Shakers go into the challenge having had a week to reflect on our outstanding 8-0 home win against Longridge Town and extra training to further boost the skills on view in that game.
Strong in defence, dynamic in midfield and relentlessly threatening up front: we certainly looked the real deal.
Lower Breck also come into this game with a great win fresh in their minds. 5-0 at home against Glossop North End, who we know are no push-overs.
And they also will have had a week off, because a frozen pitch scuppered their mid-week away fixture against FC Helens in the Macron Cup second round.
Our next match at Gigg Lane will be against Colne on Saturday December 7. After Lower Breck we travel to Burscough a week later and Litherland REMYCA on December 4.
Plenty of miles for our travelling fans – but all the players really value your backing, and so does everyone at the club. So please keep going for it!!
In Opposition – Lower Breck
Lower Breck are currently fourth in the league table – two places behind us, with 46 points from 25 games against our 49 from 21. They have won three and drawn two of their last six games.
Formed 14 years ago as a youth team, they play at the Anfield Sports Community Centre. They later joined the Lancashire County Premier League second division, were promoted to the NWCFL in 2019, and went up into the Premier Division in 2021.

Match Info: Lower Breck (H), Sat 2nd Mar, 3 pm KO
Will it ever stop raining? It seems like it hasn’t stopped for months, doesn’t it?
We look to “go again” after our Tuesday night fixture against fellow promotion hopefuls Wythenshawe was rained off due to a waterlogged pitch.
We have to celebrate the work of our grounds team and volunteers who have worked hard throughout what has been the wettest February on record to get games on but unfortunately on Tuesday, after an afternoon of rain, they were left with no time to clear the pitch and have it ready to play.
Our attention now turns to this weekend and the visit of Lower Breck, one of only five sides who have managed to beat The Shakers this campaign who will this time face a much-changed Bury side, with only three of the matchday squad of sixteen still being with us at Gigg Lane.
Breck have had mixed fortune in their last six outings with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 2 defeats. They currently sit 8th in the Premier Division table just three points off the playoffs and 19 points behind Bury having played one more game.
It should be a great game of football featuring two sides who still have it all to play for! Get down, be loud and proud, and support your Shakers!
Her Game Too
This weekend our fixtures across both men’s and women’s first-team games will celebrate women in football, and in sport in general, as we endorse the ‘Her Game Too’ message.
Read more about the plans for the weekend here and find out more about your HGT Ambassadors here.
Alcohol Sales Resume At Gigg Lane
The sale of alcohol during the game has now resumed as restrictions start to lift. for more information click here
In Opposition – Lower Breck
Founded in 2010 in Liverpool’s Tuebrook area, Lower Breck Football Club quickly established itself with a youth-driven approach aimed at future successes. Winning the South Liverpool Youth Division Title in their first season, they moved to the prestigious Carlsberg West Cheshire Association Football League, subsequently making history by winning the league title, West Cheshire Youth Plate, and LCFA County Cup—a first for any West Cheshire League team.
Joining forces with Famous Grapes Football Club in 2012, Lower Breck entered the Liverpool County Premier League’s 2nd Division, winning the title in their first open-age season. Their ambition led to a European victory at the 2013 Rheintal Trophy in Cologne, Germany.
By 2013/14, playing as Lower Breck FC in the Liverpool County Premier League’s 1st Division, they earned promotion to the Premier Division. By 2015/16, the club expanded to five teams, emphasizing growth and securing multiple domestic cup victories.
Achieving an unbeaten record and sweeping all competitions in the 2017/18 season underscored their dominance in Liverpool football. Transitioning to a North West Counties affiliated member within ten years, Lower Breck FC exemplifies grassroots development, setting sights on FA Cup football and benefiting from community support.

Match Info: Maghull (H), Sat 24th Aug, 3:00pm KO
The Shakers march on! Tuesday’s convincing 2-0 league victory against AFC Liverpool lifted us to fifth position in the league table, just two points behind leaders Ramsbottom United. We now face Maghull at home in the FA Vase first qualifying stage on Saturday and Cheadle Town in the league on Monday.
There was only ever one team in Tuesday’s match, although there was quite a gap between the goals. Skipper Macauley Wilson’s header gave us the lead on 12 minutes, and it was a long 80 minutes more before we hit a second. But Rustam Stepans’ cool and clinical penalty clincher on 90+2 was well worth the wait.
After five league games, unbeaten Bury are now in 5th place on 11 points – just two behind Ramsbottom United and Chadderton. Now if we’d won instead of drawing against Irlam in our first game on the 3G pitch… But there’s every reason to be positive as we face two more games at Gigg Lane in three days. Up first: Maghull FC in the FA Vase first preliminary round on Saturday.
In Opposition – Maghull
Maghull went down 3-2 away to Manchester side Maine Road FC on Monday evening. They are currently fifth in Division One North of the NWCFL, having won four matches, drawn two and lost two.
The Merseyside club was founded in 1921 and joined the Zingari Alliance League 1922-23. They were in the Cheshire County League when it linked up with the Lancashire Combination to create the NWCFL in 1988.

Match Info: Padiham FC (A), Tues 15th Aug, 7.45pm KO
This past Saturday The Shakers had their first taste of defeat in competitive action since returning to Gigg Lane in a 1-3 defeat to Chadderton.
An amazing crowd of 4115 were present and in fine voice as Andy Welsh’s charges went ahead after 25 minutes courtesy of a Darius Palma penalty.
Bury defended their lead well, with both sides having chances but neither capitalising until the 86th minute when Chadderton grabbed an equaliser in the form of a wonder strike from their skipper Jordan Schofield.
Goals from Kgwakgwa and Knight came deep into injury time as Bury pushed men forward to try and restore their lead sealing the win for the visitors.
Following the game speaking to match reporter Adam Clark, Andy Welsh said, “We can never be sore losers and well done to Chadderton for winning the game, as for us as a football club, i’ve said it time and time again that one game isn’t going to define us and it shouldn’t” (interview available below)
We now switch our focus to this Tuesday’s trip to the Ruby Civil Arena to face Padiham FC.
Tickets are already on sale for this game, and you can grab yours here.

In Opposition – Padiham FC
It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the `Caldersiders` as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire`s soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England.
The Padiham Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879, reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 – 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters. Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.`s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall.
At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham`s initial decade of success.
Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham`s progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues.
The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club`s involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915 – 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant until after the end of World War Two when they were reformed.
The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the `Arbories` Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1,777 spectators turned up to see the Club`s opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949 – 50 football season.
In 1982, Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League, however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons.
Padiham returned to the North West Counties Football League for the 2000/2001 season, winning the Premier Division Title in 2012/13 to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League, where they spent two seasons before being relegated back to the North West Counties Football League for the 2015/16 season. Since 1999 the club has spent in the region of £600,000 upgrading their ground.

Match Info: Padiham FC (A), Tues 30th Jul, 7.45pm KO
It was all-square at Squires Gate over the weekend in a high-scoring affair at a sold out Brian Addison Stadium with each side finding the back of the net four times and both sides leaving their first game of the season with a point.
Goals for the Shakers came from Iyrwah Gooden, Bryan Ly and Rustam Stepans who all opened their club accounts as the spoils were shared following a baking day in the sun on the coast.
Highlights and post match interviews from our Analyst Chris Watts, stepping in for Dave McNabb who accompanied Bryan Ly to a local hospital, and defender Lewis Earl are available to view below.
Our attention now switches to Tuesday night’s trip into Lancashire and Padiham for our second outing of the new season.
Last time we met our hosts at the Ruby Civil arena it was early on in the last campaign with The Shakers coming away with all three points. Padiham would return the favour as we met them at Broadhurst Part in the return fixture, denting our hopes of grabbing the promotion spot as we headed into the final league game in April.
Matchday and ticketing information for Tuesday night’s game is listed below and we look forward to seeing as many Shakers there as possible.

Last season, the Storks grabbed the final play-off spot before losing at the semi-final stage to Wythenshawe Town. They started their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Litherland on Saturday, taking an early two-goal lead before a come back from the Merseyside outfit grabbed a share of the spoils.

Match Info: Padiham FC (Broadhurst Park), Tues 16th Apr, 7.45pm KO
Well, it all comes down to this. Two games to define a season. A crazy season, including points deductions, a number of postponements due to weather, behind closed doors fixtures and now to top it all off, a change of home venue to get the game ON!
Saturday’s postponement of our game against Padiham, came less than 48 hours after the previous game had ended. This did see us victorious over neighbours Ramsbottom United under rainy Bury skies at Gigg Lane, but ultimately on top of a surface struggling to cope with the rigours it was being put through.
As manager Dave McNabb explained in his summary video, Thursday night’s game has left the pitch in an unplayable condition and we have a forecast of more wet weather to come.
With the season end rapidly approaching, the club agreed with the league on a venue switch late on Saturday evening. FC United’s Broadhurst Park coming to the rescue at the eleventh hour. We thank the ‘Red Rebels‘, who have returned the favour following their groundshare with the Shakers from 2005-2014.
Amazingly, FC United’s first league game at Gigg Lane in the summer of 2005 was against non-other than our opponents at Broadhurst Park this week, Padiham.
And what a crucial game to take to north-east Manchester. With both Wythenshawe sides ahead of the Shakers in the league going into the weekend, failing to win their respective games against Chadderton and Burscough, the door has cracked open for a late title charge. Two wins lands us top spot and the league title.
Where would you rather be on Tuesday night? Be #PartofIt with our match information below.

Post Match Interviews
In Opposition – Padiham FC
Founded in November 1878, Padiham Football Club, initially known as the ‘Caldersiders’, quickly became one of Lancashire’s soccer pioneers and a prominent team in England. The club was a founding member of the Lancashire Football Association’s Senior Cup in 1879 and achieved success in the F.A. Cup during the 1883-84 season. Their early encounters included significant victories over Burnley F.C. and matches drawing crowds exceeding 2,000 at their original ground near River Calder, leased from the Shuttleworth family.
However, the establishment of the Football League and the legalization of professionalism in football shifted the competitive landscape, leading to a decline in Padiham’s fortunes. The club struggled to attract skilled players and financial constraints forced them into lower leagues.
World War One halted their activities, and they remained inactive until their revival in 1949 at the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground. Over the years, Padiham saw various league changes and spent significant funds on ground upgrades. They rejoined the North West Counties Football League in 2000, won the Premier Division in 2013, and after a brief stint in the Northern Premier League, returned to the North West Counties League in 2015.
This season has seen the ‘Storks’ make a late charge at the play-offs, after only two losses in the last 10 they sit in 7th going into the game. Wins in all three final games would see them in with a very good shout of playing in the post-season, so all to play for.
Highlights of our game at Padiham in summery August conditions can be found below.

Well it’s been some season and the final league home match of our first campaign back in our Gigg Lane home is now upon us as we welcome Padiham FC to Gigg Lane.

Match Info: Pilkington (H), Sat 2nd Nov, 3pm KO
There are plenty of good reasons for every available Bury supporter to head to Gigg Lane for the match against Pilkington this weekend.
The lead-up has been about as good as it gets: two away wins in five days and two clean sheets, followed by two training sessions in a rare week clear of matches.
It’s likely that on-loan striker Djavan Pedro will make his first home appearance following his impressive debut at Colne.
And then… you might just catch a glimpse of our old striking-hero Ryan Lowe – special guest in the hospitality venues. We might even get to sing his old Gigg Lane chant! Ryan Lowe…repeat and repeat!
All our hopes for the trips to Colne and Charnock Richard were fulfilled, and the next aspiration is a third successive win with another clean sheet. Mitch Allen has been superb in goal, and thoroughly deserves the greeting he will get from the fans if we pull it off.
We are 16 unbeaten in the league and look to start off the month of November with fireworks of our own. So…come on you (Shakers) fans, we will see you at Gigg Lane to be #PartofIt. Get all your pre-match information below.
In Opposition – Pilkington
Two wins in their last six games represents improvement for third-from-bottom Pilkington. Success against Colne and Charnock Richard and a draw with South Liverpool will have given morale a bit of a boost.
The Greens are in their second season in the Premier Division after winning the Division One North title in 2023. Last season, we won 3-1 in the same fixture with late goals from Billy Reeves & Joe Hobson. Recap the highlights below.
Check out Pilk’s history, from their breakdown available at the NWCFL website HERE. Ryan Beigan will be one to watch who has previously featured at Lower Breck, moving to Pilks in the summer and has eight goals so far this term.
Next week Pilkington might fancy their chances a little more – they’re at home to our neighbours Prestwich Heys, who are having an even tougher time of it. But then a week later they face another daunting prospect…a visit to our other near neighbours and current league leaders Ramsbottom United.

Match Info: Pilkington (H), Tue 14th Nov, 7:45pm KO
We return to Gigg Lane for the only home game of the month tomorrow night, and we will be conducting our remembrance service ahead of kick-off so please arrive early. Full details on the night’s service, can be found here.
We maintained our position at the top of the table following our exploits in the FA Vase over the weekend. Wins for both Wythenshawe and Kendal closed the gap on us below, which means we will need to be back at it following a lacklustre performance in the north-east against Whickham on Saturday.
Catch the highlights here and the manager’s thoughts below
After a strong start to life in the NWCFL Premier Division following promotion from the Division One North as champions last term, Pilkington have struggled in recent weeks with four losses in five outings.
A 4-3 win at the Acroframe Stadium against Skelmersdale being the only victory in that spell, Pilks were defeated by FC Isle of Man in Douglas over the weekend by a single Frank Jones goal. They sit 13th going into the game, on 28 points from 20 games.
The full match information pack can be found below.
In Opposition – Pilkington
The club was established in 1938 and joined both the Liverpool Business Houses League and the St Helens Combination. The name originates from the Pilkington glass factory in St. Helens. They later became members of the Liverpool County Football Combination. In 1980 the club joined Division Two of the Mid-Cheshire League. When Division Two was abolished in 1983, they became part of the league’s single division. The club finished bottom of the league in 1986–87.
A new second division of the Mid-Cheshire League was formed in 1987 and Pilkington became members of Division One. However, after finishing bottom of the league in 1988–89 and 1990–91, they were relegated to Division Two. The club were Division Two runners-up in 1997–98, resulting in promotion to Division One. They finished bottom of the division in 1999–2000, but were reprieved from relegation after another team left the league. The following season saw the club win the Liverpool Junior Cup, a trophy the club won again in 2004–05.
In 2010–11 Pilkington were runners-up in Division One, missing out on the title on goal difference. The division was renamed the Premier Division in 2014. The club finished bottom of the Premier Division in 2014–15 and were relegated to Division One. They won the league’s Presidents Cup in 2016–17, and after finishing as runners-up in Division One in 2017–18, the club were promoted back to the Premier Division. The following season saw them win the Premier Division title, resulting in promotion to Division One North of the North West Counties League. They were Division One North champions in 2022–23 and were promoted to the Premier Division.
The club originally played at Crossley Road, before moving to Ruskin Drive at the beginning of the 1948–49 season. Their home ever since, the complex was redeveloped from 2016 to incorporate an astro-turf pitch amongst additional upgraded facilites to cater for all sports including space for other local football clubs, as well as rugby, cricket and tennis. The ground is shared with other local side, St Helen’s Town AFC.

Match Info: Pilkington (H), Tue 28th Nov, 7:45pm KO
It was disappointment in Burscough for The Shakers on Saturday, falling to defeat to bottom of the table Skelmersdale United.
On day where it just didn’t seem to click for Dave McNabbs men, Pascal Chimbonda’s Skelmersdale side made sure that they took their chances and were fortunate enough to gain a goal courtesy of a rare Harry Wright error.
Skem Chairman Frank Hughes described to us on Playing Away how there was a False bottom in our Division and his team showcased why they perhaps should not be written off as relegation fodder.
Dave McNabb had a message for all the fans as he spoke to our Match Reporter Adam Clark following Saturday’s game, he also took to x.com to show his appreciation for the support shown to the team. You can see his post match interview below.
We however can’t dwell on the defeat for too long, as we are straight back into league action this coming Tuesday for our re-arranged fixture against newly promoted Pilkington FC.
After a strong start to life in the NWCFL Premier Division following promotion from the Division One North as champions last term, Pilkington have struggled in recent weeks with four losses , one win and a single draw in their last six outings.
A 4-3 win at the Acroframe Stadium against Skelmersdale being the only victory in that spell, Pilks were defeated by Chadderton over the weekend and they sit 16th going into the game, on 29 points from 23 games.

Match Info: Pilkington FC (A), Sat 3rd Feb, 3pm KO
In our last outing Dave McNabbs men put Skelmersdale United to the sword in an emphatic 10 – 1 victory. A result that is a new league record for The Shakers surpassing the 8 – 0 set against Huddersfield Town way back in January 1970.
Goals for; Andy Briggs, Connor Comber, Andy Scarisbrick, Dec Daniels, Arthur Lomax-Jones, Benito Lowe, Sam Burns and a debut hattrick for local lad Jacob Holland-Wilkinson left the Gigg Lane faithful in no doubt that the team has their eyes fully set on the task ahead of them in the next fifteen games.
Our next outing see’s us travel to St Helens to face another Merseyside team, Pilkington Football Club. The last time the two sides met it was a closely contested affair until the final 10 minutes with Bury putting the foot on the pedal, piling on the pressure to come away with a 3-1 win.
We will be facing a much changed and very youthful Pilks side as manager Ste Palfrey stepped back following the November fixture at Gigg, making way for Matt Potter and Kev Langley to take the Glass’ reigns sparking a transformation of the playing squad, as is often the case at this level.
Get down to the Arcoframe on Saturday and help us bring the three points back to Bury as we continue our push for promotion.
You can view the highlights from our last outing and the latest episode of Playing Away below.
‘Playing Away’ – Episode Seven
Opponents – Pilkington Football Club
Pilkington Football Club, officially founded in 1938, boasts a rich history rooted in the Pilkington glass factory in St Helens. Originating from workers’ teams in the 19th century, the club officially formed in 1938 after the amalgamation of St Helens’ works teams. The early years were marked by participation in various leagues, with the club joining the Mid-Cheshire League in 1983/84.
Over the decades, managerial changes and league challenges characterized the club’s journey. Notably, the 1992/93 season marked a shift in focus towards youth development under Dave Burrows. The late 1990s witnessed the 1st Team’s ascent, securing promotion in 1997/98. The early 2000s saw a rejuvenation led by managers Dave Burrows and Andy Hockenhull, achieving success in the Liverpool Junior Cup.
The 2010s brought managerial changes and a renewed emphasis on professionalism. The club experienced both relegation and promotion, with Ste Palfrey taking over in 2015/16. The 2017/18 season marked a turning point, with Pilkington FC achieving promotion to the Cheshire League Premier Division and expanding its junior and women’s teams.
The 2019/20 season saw the club enter the North West Counties Football League, Division One North. Managerial changes occurred in 2020/21, with Ste Palfrey returning for his third spell. In the 2022/23 season, Pilkington FC triumphed as North West Counties First Division North Champions, culminating in their third promotion in five seasons. The club’s growth extends beyond the men’s senior team, now fielding multiple women’s and junior teams, showcasing a flourishing community presence.

Match Info: Prestwich Heys (A), Mon 1st Apr, 3pm KO
We head into the final five games following an agonising finale to our Good Friday battle with Wythenshawe at Gigg Lane. Saturdays game saw us draw with our promotion rivals after a penalty given in the dying seconds of eight additional added minutes handed Wythenshawe a point and a boost in the race for the title.
We now turn to Easter Monday and a trip to Adie Moran park where we will take on playoff chasers Prestwich Heys.
Heys have won four of their last six and will be looking to put pressure on fellow playoff contenders Padiham and Chadderton who sit just above them in the Premier Division table.
Dave McNabb’s charges will be looking to reverse the trend set in the last four games and get back to winning ways on the road after run which has seen us fall to two defeats and draw tow in our last six.
The away allocation for this game is sold out and our volunteers will be on the gates helping scan fans in on the day. We advise fans to please not travel to Adie Moran park without a valid ticket.
As always Roch valley Radio will be with us to provide commentary on the day and you will be able to keep up with all the action on our social media pages across the afternoon.
Highlights and post match interviews from Gaz Peet and Max Harrop are available below.
Last Time Out – Prestwich (h)
Opponents – Prestwich Heys
The origins of Prestwich Heys AFC can be traced back to 9th February 1938 when a meeting was called at the Music Room of the Heys Road Boys’ School at which Elgar Lumsden put forward the idea of forming an Old Boys’ Association.
Despite the onset of the Second World War a year later, the Association flourished under the Chairmanship of Proctor Bell, who also acted as Secretary of the football arm, known as Heys Old Boys AFC, and was acknowledged as one of the region’s best.
The team gradually progressed through the Bury Amateur League and in to the South East Lancashire League claiming Championships in 1960, 1961 and 1964. Under the guidance of Peter Gilmore in the sixties, Heys won the prestigious Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1967 followed by the one and only Lancashire Combination Grand Slam in the 1970/71 season with Heys bringing all four trophies available back to Grimshaws.
The club also changed its name in 1964 to Prestwich Heys AFC, an acknowledgement of the fame achieved by the club as they proved one of the nation’s top amateur clubs.
Thousands flocked to see Heys play, and beat, the likes of Sutton United, Ferryhill Athletic, Finchley and Highgate United in the FA Amateur Cup with the club’s best run taking Hey’s to the last 16. The victory over Sutton United in 1969 ranks as one of Heys most famous moments, attracting nationwide coverage, coming a week before their opponents were due to meet Leeds United in the FA Cup.
The above has been taken from the history section of the Prestwich Heys website, read more here.
In more recent seasons, Heys re-entered the NWCFL in 2017 (following a stint in the divisions in the early-80s) before gaining promotion to the Premier Division during the covid league re-shuffle in 2021. The side finished 7th last season, and are looking to improve on that this season, comfortably sitting inside the play-off positions going into the festive period.
