Match Info: Glossop North End (H), Tue 8th Oct, 7:45pm KO
We need noisy fans in numbers to get behind the Shakers as they face Glossop North End in their 21st match of the season. Yes, we are indeed, still the mighty Shakers. Yes, we are unbeaten. And yes, we did beat North End 4-2 away three weeks ago. But the 5-1 win at Longridge on Saturday flattered us. Without Mitch Allen’s heroics in saving two out of three penalties it might have been a very different story. The 900 fans who made the journey up the M6 will have been delighted with the result, but maybe concerned that the match could all-too-easily have got away from us. They may well have wondered if the pressure of that unbeaten run and two matches a week, week after week, is beginning to tell? Just a few days after the Glossop match the Shakers have yet another big game – and yet another away from home. On Saturday, they travel 130 miles each way to take on Harborough in the final qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup. Another win in the league game would send them off in good spirits. So please…come on down!! Come on you Shakers!!! You can relive all the action from Saturday and hear post match reaction from Chris Watts & Ben Hockenhull below. In Opposition – Glossop North End Glossop had a terrible start to the season, but have won their last five league games – including a 5-1 defeat of Squires Gate on Saturday. They’re 16th in the league table, having scored 26 goals and conceded 31. They ended last season in 21st position. We played them three times, losing 2-1 at home and winning 1-0 away in the league, and losing 2-1 at Glossop in the Manchester Premier Cup. North End’s history dates back to 1886. They won the NWCFL Premier Division title in 2015 and in the same year they played at Wembley in the final of the Isuzu FA Vase, losing 2-1 to North Shields. Club Statement – FENIX Trophy Withdrawal
This week we informed the FENIX Trophy organisers of our intentions to withdraw from the competition. Following discussions amongst the board & management team, it was felt that our recent cup successes coupled with the Finnish weather, it would be difficult to arrange a date before the first round concludes in December. We understand that this might come as a disappointment to supporters, but we have taken this decision in the best interest of the football club. View the full article

Player Update – Andy Briggs
We can confirm Andy Briggs has joined Northern Premier League side Widnes on dual registration. Andy has made 12 appearances off the bench this season and heads to Merseyside in a bid for more game time. Manager, Dave McNabb said: “Andy has had a bit of a stop, start season so far for various reasons. He hasn’t managed to get the game time he wants or deserves. “Now he is fully fit it makes sense for him to go an get some regular game time at Widnes. “Andy remains an important player and part of the long term plans.” Briggs added: “I would like to give a quick thanks to the fans for their unwavering support so far this season. Obviously, as a team it’s been a great start but from a personal point of view, this season I’ve not had as much game time as I would have hoped. “The fans however have been unbelievable throughout. As a player, playing games is the most important thing, so hopefully I can take this opportunity to get so much needed game time and I hope to see you all soon.” We’d like to wish Andy all the best for his time at Widnes and we’ll keep you updated on his progress. Match Info: Longridge Town (A), Sat 5th Oct, 3pm KO
Our visit to Longridge Town for a league match is in no sense a case of “back to the old routine” for the unbeaten Shakers. It will be a tough game against opponents who had a good start to the season but now desperately need to prove a point. Town are more than aware that Bury go into the game after that dramatic Emirates FA Cup win at Radcliffe last weekend and a good result in a demanding midweek encounter with Chadderton. In such a situation, a come-down in a real danger. But everyone at Gigg Lane has promotion as the No 1 priority for the season, so the game at Longridge is a Cup Final – just like every league game. Last season, Bury took four points from their two games against Town, drawing 1-1 at home and winning 2-1 at Longridge. Highlights and post-match interviews from Tuesday are available on our YouTube channel (links below) We head up the M6, looking to make 20 unbeaten since the start of the season in all competitions. It’s 13th away game of the season – looking to pick up our 10th win on the road. We’ve scored 39 goals on the road this season, averaging 3.25 goals per game. In Opposition – Longridge Town Town’s last match on Tuesday was a 4-3 Macron Cup win on penalties after a 1-1 draw at home against Holker Old Boys. Before that, they’d lost three successive league games – against Abbey Hey and Squires Gate away and Litherland at home. The Preston club was created in 1996 by the merger of two teams which had started life in the 19th century as church sides playing in different leagues. They progressed to the NWCFL’s Division One North in 2018, and scored 144 goals on their way to becoming champions in their first season. Their aim now is to consolidate their position in the Premier Division, having finished in 19th position last season with 44 points from 46 games. They are currently in eighth position, having won eight and lost seven of their 15 games. Match Info: Chadderton FC (H), Tue 1st Oct, 7:45pm KO
Pressure? This Bury team thrives on it. Everyone knows the league is our top priority. But this past weekend it was the FA Cup and a visit to Radcliffe. It was a remarkable away victory in a massive local derby, against a team three tiers above us in the football pyramid but Dave, his staff and his team never thought they wouldn’t come away with the win. Before the kick off there was a tribute to the late Paul Hilton, Radcliffe’s Chairman, who sadly passed away last week. With both clubs laying wreaths in the center circle and all 2,800 in attendance taking part in a minute’s applause to celebrate the life a man who has done so much not only for non-league football but for his club’s local community too. He will be missed by all who knew him. The game began… And what a game: Radcliffe one up after seven minutes. Bury level in 57 and ahead in 82. Radcliffe level in 89. And finally…Bury’s winning penalty in 103. Amazing! Yes, we celebrated our win on Saturday. Yes, we all awaited the fourth qualifying round draw with baited breath. But there’s no blurring of the focus on promotion as we look back to the North West Counties Premier Division and a huge match against second placed Chadderton, a team who find themselves in a rich vein of form in recent weeks. It’s going to be a tough game, but Dave and his team are revved up and ready to go following this weekend’s win and we need you behind us from the first minute until the final whistle!! You can relive all the action from Saturday and hear post match feedback from Tim Lees, Sam Coughlan and Captain Gaz Peet below. In Opposition – Chadderton FC Good performances in recent games have put Chadderton in a strong position in the NWCFL Premier Division table, just behind leaders Ramsbottom and having played two games fewer. Their 32 points from 15 matches compares with Ramsbottom’s 36 from 17 and Bury’s 25 from 11 in fifth position. On Friday night, Chadderton beat AFC Liverpool 7-1 away, having won 5-3 at Prestwich Heys on Tuesday. These results followed an 8-4 home win against Retford United from the Central Midlands league in the Isuzu FA Vase. Their opponents at home in the first round proper are none other than the Shakers. The Chadderton club came into existence in 1947 and took their present name in 1957. They joined the Lancashire Combination in 1980 and two years later were one of the founding clubs in the NWCFL. On the Day & In the Ground Our Matchday @ Gigg guide is available to read to find out everything you need to know going on in and around the ground. Match Tickets can be bought online HERE. Match Info: Radcliffe (A), Sat 28th Sept, 3pm KO
Home victories over Stockport Town in the league and Burscough in the Isuzu FA Vase second qualifying round take our unbeaten run to 17 games. And that’s not to mention third place in the NW Counties league table with games in hand. It all provides an excellent springboard for our dive into the deep waters of the game against supreme rivals Radcliffe. But the Shakers made many fans shake with fear by conceding a late, late goal in the one-sided game against Town on Tuesday. Rustam Stepans had scored from a penalty on 55 minutes, and a second goal from Sam Coughlan on the stroke of 90 finally seemed to have clinched it. But three minutes later Harley Monaghan sparked a scary ending but a satisfactory 2-1 result. Goals from Ruben Jerome, Ben Hockenhull and Rustam Stepans made the Isuzu FA Vase second qualifying round win against Burscough on Saturday a complete contrast. It seemed all over by half-time. And so it was: 3-0. Highlights and post-match interviews from Tuesday’s win are available on our YouTube channel (links below) In Opposition – Radcliffe It’s not been a good start in the Vanarama National League North for newly-promoted Radcliffe. They’re currently bottom: played 8, won 0, drawn 4, lost 4. The 2-1 away win against Warrington in the Emirates FA Cup second qualifying round will have given morale at the club a hefty boost. And they will be hoping for another when they take on Bury at the Neuven Stadium in the third qualifying round. The game will have special resonance for 37-year-old Nicky Adams, who played for Bury during his long career in league football. Radcliffe football club came into being as Radcliffe Borough in 1949. It was a bitter blow for many in the town when it became part of Bury Metropolitan Borough in 1974. And that may explain why it took so long for the club to drop “Borough” from its title – in 2018. Recruitment Update – September 2024
Our Head of Recruitment Jimmy Holmes has provided the following update for supporters: We are now 2 months into the season. I just wanted to provide an update on the new squad with an insight into how we’ve gone about it. From day one at Bury FC my job was to help build a squad that could compete at the top end of the table and ultimately gain promotion, but also go on and progress up to the next league once we get there. Previously the club had a high turnover of players throughout the past 4 seasons. We wanted to change this and add in players for the long term. The next stage was to take what the club had from last season. We only had a handful of players that had committed so we had to build an entirely new squad. We had a number of key targets that had been watched on numerous occasions that we wanted to bring to the club so when we made our approach we were fully confident in the player. They are a brand new squad that will take time to fulfill its potential with an average age of 23. It was part of our plan to also build a squad that is younger. Long term we don’t want to have a relatively high average age & we don’t want to be having to re-build like in previous years. We have a clear plan on how we want to get there. Even if it isn’t always easy to bring the right players into Bury FC it’s important that the individual players we sign can identify with our path. Players who can handle the pressure of playing for Bury FC but who can also handle the expectations week in week out. Players that can go on a journey with the club, identify with fans and be ready for the next challenge when the club gets there. We want to invest in these players now so the rewards will come later down the road after making 50/100/150 appearances for the club. That is something unique at these levels of football. If you want to build something, you have to think two or three years ahead. Most of the players are of an age, so that in one, two or three years they will still be at a good footballer’s age and everyone’s goal is to move forward with the club. The purpose of good recruitment is to find players who fit a team’s style of play before anyone else realises how good they are clubs can also look for undervalued players. We wanted to bring into the club players that the fans might not have heard about before. New players that we believe can go and take the club on to another level. Players who may not have played in a certain position before who we can develop and fit into our system & style of play. If the players individually and squad collectively keep their levels high it’s going to be a pleasure to watch them moving forward. We don’t want to copy other clubs we want to recruit the best talent for our club and be unique. Jimmy Holmes. View the full article
