  2. We are delighted to confirm the signing of centre-back Aaron Chalmers, who joins us from Stalybridge Celtic, subject to NWCFL approval. The 33-year-old, came through the ranks at Oldham Athletic, making it through to the first team to make two appearances. After spells at Macclesfield Town and Hibernian, he dropped down the leagues to join Mossley in 2010, where he made 44 appearances and scored once. In 2011, he had a loan stint at Droylsden before moving to Stockport Sports for a season, later signing with Southport. During his time at Southport, he made 29 appearances and had another loan spell at Droylsden. In 2013, he spent a season with Ashton United before starting the 2014 season at Hyde and concluding it at Northwich Victoria. A productive stint followed in 2015 with Stalybridge Celtic, where he amassed 89 appearances. He then rejoined Ashton United, moved to Buxton, and ultimately became captain at Prestwich Heys. During his time at Adie Moran Park, he was a standout player, starting nearly every match and collecting the Player of the Year award last May, before re-joining Stalybridge in the summer, and has made 20 appearances to date this season. Credit: Phil Smith Upon signing for the club, Aaron said: “It was a hard choice to leave Stalybridge. I’ve had two spells there and loved every bit of it, but after speaking to Dave about the ambition of the club and what he wants from me. It’s the right move for me. “The club are going up and not stopping anytime soon. I’m a winner I want to win at anything and everything I do. That’s just the way I am. I’m looking forward to helping the lads and the club get that promotion – that’s my main priority hopefully with a win on Saturday.” Manager, Dave McNabb added: “Aaron is top quality centre half with real defensive instincts. He’s a leader and organiser with an excellent CV and background. He’s played much higher up the pyramid but also knows these levels too. “Aaron will really help us defensively and will work with some of the younger players to help improve them too.” View the full article

  5. We welcome Colne to Gigg Lane determined to bounce back from our disappointing start to a month which may well prove vital in our bid for promotion. That 3-1 defeat at Litherland REMYCA was hard to take, but hey! – football’s always about a new start with the next match. We beat Colne 2-0 at their place at the end of October, with second-half goals from Ben Hockenhull and Connor Pye. Since then, we’ve won two and lost two and Colne have won two, drawn one and lost one. Losing twice in four games has come as a massive shock after going 21 without a single defeat. A convincing victory against Colne is clearly well within our capabilities, and would give morale a massive boost. So we need lots of fans in good voice to flock to Gigg Lane and get behind the lads. Please come on down – and come on you Shakers!! View Wednesday’s post match reaction from Dave McNabb and Cam Fogerty below. In Opposition – Colne All credit to Colne for their performance in the last four games, after a dreadful start to their second season following relegation from the Northern Premier’s West Division. They currently languish in 23rd place in the table, with just 13 points from 24 games. The Shakers are in 3rd place, with 52 points from the same number of games. Last season, we beat them 3-1 away and 4-1 at home, and they finished in 10th positon – seven places below us. Colne was founded in 1996, and just 20 years later – on 7 May 2016 – clinched the North West Counties Premier Division championship. A single goal in their last game of the season at 1874 Northwich was all they needed, and they finally scored it late in the second half. 10. Objective achieved! We prepared for this game by bouncing back in style from the defeat at Lower Breck by beating Burscough 4-2 away. The first 45 minutes were probably the best we’ve played all season, even counting the stunning 8-0 defeat of Longridge Town. So we travel once again to Merseyside with heads held high. But it was disappointing to present Burscough with a gift goal early in the second half, and after that it was a struggle. Quality told in the end, and overall it was another great day for us. It was good to welcome forward Pat Jarrett back into the team for his first league start for the club, but sad to say farewell to experienced Lewis Alessandra who played his final game at the weekend. If you hadn’t already seen, experienced midfielder Nicky Adams re-joined the club for a fourth spell over the weekend, and subject to paperwork being approved, he will be avaliable for selection this week. Now it’s onward and upward as we begin a busy and demanding December placed third in the league and with games in hand. First call is at Litherland REMYCA. We beat them twice last season – 4-2 at home and 6-0 away. Either score would suit us this time round – it’s the points that matter. Come on you Shakers!! Saturday’s highlights and interviews are available to watch below: In Opposition – Litherland REMYCA We can expect a tough game at REMYCA, who are currently 19th in the league with 26 points from 23 matches. They’ve won two and lost three of their last six games, including a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of top-of-the-table Ramsbottom United. The club’s goal is a mid-table position, and they have a clear policy of giving high-flying teams like the Shakers a thorough examination. They greatly value their place in the NWC premiership, and after several seasons flirting with relegation appointed one of their own players – popular striker Colin McDonald – as manager. That was four years ago, they and he are still here, and last season finished 12th. Tickets Tickets are available to purchase, via Litherland’s ticketing provider, Skiddle. Click here to purchase. 11. Last week we had the pleasure of hosting two football clubs from Chicago on behalf of FTI Sports Ltd – Lindenhurst Area Soccer Club and Chicago KICS Youth Soccer Club. Hiring Gigg Lane for training sessions, the children loved playing on the pitch and watching from the stands the parents loved hearing the story of Bury’s return to football. Following the session they flooded into the club shop to buy memorabilia of their trip from football tops and hoodies to pin badges and an abundance of our scarves and bobble hats to take back to Chicago for the winter. In the days that followed they played fixtures vs our Under 13s, Under 12s and Under 10s A & B teams, with some of the games streamed across the pond! Replays of these exhibition fixtures, can be watched here. View the full article

  14. We are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Nicky Adams from Radcliffe, and with it Nicky starts a fourth spell at Gigg Lane. The 38-year-old began his footballing career with the Shakers, after coming through the club’s youth setup in the early 2000s. He made his first team debut in October 2005 in a 1-0 win against Darlington, in what was a debut not only for him but the first game in charge for the then manager, Chris Casper. Nicky scored the only goal of the game, which ended up being the first of 14 in his first spell at the club. Casper spoke highly of Adams after his debut: “I’m made up for young Nicky Adams, as he has really worked hard on his game. He’s run himself into the ground for the team, and he took the goal well.” Adams signed for Leicester City in 2008 This kind of performance was typical of the player, both on and off the field. His character was infectious, resonating with those in the stands and in the changing room-a-like. His abilities were noticed by a host of clubs and his first spell at Gigg Lane came to a close with a move to League One-side Leicester City in 2008. He made his first return in May 2014 following spells at Brentford, Rochdale, Crawley Town and Rotherham United. This second stint only lasted a season, but his first promotion as a Shaker came with it, earning a top-three spot on the last day of the 2014/15 season at Tranmere. Adams’ third spell began in the summer of 2018 when he joined a newly-relegated League Two side under the stewardship of club legend Ryan Lowe. Nicky was the captain, leading by example and despite fantastic displays on the pitch, and another promotion to League One, (again at Tranmere), turmoil off the pitch spiralled the Shakers supporters into despair. We left the Football League in the summer of 2019 after 125 years of membership. Nicky spoke out on social media about the behind the scenes issues (left), but this was unable to prevent the downturn in club’s plight, with all players and staff eventually leaving the club after pay had been withheld for months. Moving on again, Nick headed back to Northampton for a second spell, before returning north to Boundary Park and Oldham Athletic. Recently he joined Radcliffe, and helped guide them to promotion last season as Boro hit the National League North for the first time. He reached 100 appearances for Boro earlier this month, and has over 750 appearances across an extensive 22-year career to date. To date Nicky has made 191 Bury appearances, scoring 19 goals. We are sure you will be looking forward to welcoming him back to Gigg Lane once again. The agreement is subject to FA and league approval, with Nicky going into Dave McNabb’s squad this week once this has been confirmed. For more on Nicky’s arrival, head to the socials X / Facebook / Instagram To get your tickets to watch Nicky back at Gigg Lane this December, these can be secured now by clicking below: View the full article

  18. Our trip to Burscough this afternoon will see the final appearance of Lewis Alessandra, as he confirms his retirement from football. Lewis has decided to call time on his 17-year playing career, due to recurring injuries & work commitments. The 35-year-old started out at grassroots side Roach Dynamos before heading to Oldham. He went onto play in the football league for Morecambe, Plymouth Argyle, Rochdale, Hartlepool, Notts County, Morecambe & Carlisle United before moving into non-league and playing for South Shields & Hyde United. He signed for the Shakers in August, and has made 24 appearances for the club this season. Lewis got on the scoresheet in two of our FA Cup ties earlier this season at Avro & Garforth. Manager Dave McNabb said: “Lewis is a brilliant lad who has added so much both on the pitch and off it since he came to the club. “I’m gutted he’s decided to call a day, on what has been a career that most people can only dream of but we’ve got to respect his decision and he leaves us with our best wishes. “Lewis will always be welcome at Gigg Lane and I can’t thank him enough for everything he has done to help me and the club this season. Good luck Lew.” We would like to place on record our thanks to Lewis for his commitment to the club, and we wish him all the best for the future after what has been an amazing football career. 21. On Boxing Day, the club is hosting a charitable fundraising event, which will benefit Bury Hospice and the North West Air Ambulance this year. These vital organisations rely heavily on charitable donations, with Bury Hospice requiring approximately £6.5 million annually to operate, and the Air Ambulance needing around £18 million. This fundraiser is not only backed by our dedicated volunteers, but also by the club’s management and players. We will be hosting an online auction featuring framed photographs signed by various players past and present, along with a raffle and bucket collection around the ground. We would love for you to get involved in any of these activities by either making a prize donation for the Auction, raffle or making a cash donation to support these two outstanding local organisations. As it’s the season to be giving, a small donation can go a long way and would be extremely welcome from both Bury Hospice and North West Air Ambulance. Raffle tickets will begin to be sold on Saturday 7th December, ahead of our home game against Colne, with the prize draw taking place on Boxing Day. The online auction begins today, with the following lots up for grabs: Signed photo of Dave McNabb vs Radcliffe Signed photo of Mitch Allen, Lewis Alessandra, Sam Coughlan & Ben Hockenhull vs Longridge (away) Signed photo of Connor Pye vs Chadderton (home) Signed photo of Bryan Ly vs Squires Gate (away) Signed photo of Connor Pye, Cam Fogerty & Bobby Carroll vs Radcliffe Signed photo of Rustam Stepans vs Squires Gate (away) Signed photo of Bebeto Gomes vs Padiham (away) Signed photo of Alex Cherera vs Congleton (away) Signed photo of Ben Hockenhull vs FC Isle of Man (away) Signed photo of Josh Gregory & Connor Pye vs Radcliffe (away) Signed photo of Gaz Peet vs FC Isle of Man (away) Signed photo of DJ Pedro vs Pilkington (home) Signed photo of Mitch Allen vs Radcliffe Signed photo of Bryan Ly, Connor Pye & Lewis Earl vs Radcliffe Signed photo of Ruben Jerome vs Radcliffe If you’d like to place a bid or purchase a raffle ticket – please email fundraising@buryfc.co.uk, with a starting bid and a contact telephone number to verify the bid. 22. The festive part of the 2024/25 season is upon us, and we have four Christmas-time crackers to bring you this December! Colne, Saturday 7th December 3pm Abbey Hey, Saturday 14th December 3pm Ramsbottom United, BOXING DAY (Thursday 26th December) 3pm Prestwich Heys, Saturday 28th December 3pm Get your football fix down at Gigg Colne head to Gigg on Saturday 7th December, before Abbey Hey travel from East Manchester the following weekend (14th) ahead of a set of local derbies to close out our home games for 2024. First up, ‘The Rams’ of Ramsbottom United arrive at Gigg on Boxing Day for what is shaping up to be a classic top-of-the-table clash against our neighbours from up the A56. Whilst we have been playing catch-up after our cup exploits earlier in the season, Rammy have maintained top spot in the league for long periods. This is becoming a superb turnaround season for the Rams, after what was a disappointing time following their return to the North West Counties last season. Two days later, again at Gigg Lane, we have the return of Prestwich Heys in a repeat of what was last season’s Boxing Day fixture. We ran out 2-0 winners on the day, and with Heys having somewhat of a difficult season so far this time out, sitting bottom at the time of writing, they will be looking to restore some pride and put a dent in the Shakers pursuit of wins in the process. The big question will be, can we break the recent attendance record again at Gigg Lane? Last year’s Boxing Day crowd of 4,833 is there to be shot at. Be there, and be #PartofIt! Online digital tickets can be purchased for all fixtures NOW – buryfc.co.uk/tickets Match Sponsorship & Hospitality Mitsubishi Electric & AC Ventilation presented Player of the Match, Lewis Earl with his award following our win against Longridge Have your brand associated with the Shakers and sponsor a game at Gigg. Either two-course or single-course options are available, with the bar open from 12.30pm to soak up the atmosphere ahead of the big game. 23. We look forward to bouncing back against struggling Burscough after having lost our unbeaten record in the disappointing 4-3 defeat at Lower Breck. Let’s be clear: it was a remarkable achievement to go 21 league games without defeat – just two short of the season’s half-way mark. And let’s not forget our previous game was the outstanding 8-0 home win against Longridge Town, in which we excelled in every department. Lower Breck were always going to be a challenge, given their form. The last time any team put four goals past the Shakers was the first day of the season – a 4-4 draw at Squires Gate. Having a week to recover, and with two training sessions, hopes are high that we can put that disappointment behind us and push on. Promotion is our goal, and every match is a challenge. Our outstanding group of players are no doubt being reminded of that performance as they prepare to take on the Linnets. So Burscough here we come, as we hit the half-way point in the season – Up The Shakers! Saturday’s highlights and interviews with Dave McNabb & Gaz Peet are available to watch below: In Opposition – Burscough Back in September, we beat Burscough 3-0 at home in the Isuzu FA Vase second qualifying round. They’re currently 17th in the league table, with 27 points from 24 games, in contrast to the Shakers’ 3rd position, with 49 points from two games fewer. They were given a welcome boost on Saturday when they beat Irlam 1-0 at home on their excellent 4G all-weather pitch. They had lost all their previous five matches. The club came into existence in 1946 and moved to a newly-built ground three years ago. They became members of the North-West Counties league when it was formed in 1982, and topped the table in the first season. Last term they finished 20th, having drawn 2-2 with Bury both at home and away. Tickets Tickets will be sold on the gate, both cash & card payments are available. 24. Join us on Friday, 13th December in Starkies, for a night of football stories, laughs, and great company! We will be joined by former Bury player & manager Martin Dobson, former Bury chairman Terry Robinson and current first-team manager Dave McNabb, all hosted by Michael “Braddy” Bradshaw. Martin Dobson, a prolific midfield player in his era, began his career at Bolton Wanderers before finding success with Burnley, where he spent 13 seasons across two stints, interrupted by a five-year spell with Everton. During his career, Dobson celebrated two promotions to the top flight with Burnley (1973 and 1982), made 494 appearances, scored 76 goals, and reached FA Cup semi-finals with both Burnley and Everton. Capped five times for England, he later became player-manager at Bury in 1984, transforming a struggling club with a streamlined squad and exciting signings like Leighton James. In his first full season, he led Bury to promotion from the Fourth Division, eventually establishing them in the Third Division. For the Shakers, he played 70 games and managed a further 282 matches, Dobson left an enduring legacy of success and attacking football despite limited resources. On the night, Martin will be launching his autobiography giving guests an early opportunity to purchase a signed copy. Tickets are £25 or £45 with a signed copy of Martin’s book, this includes: A table seat in Starkies Lounge Pie and peas. Special auction and raffle prizes. 25. Working with Bury Council and Bury Community Safety Partnership, at Bury Football Club we are committed to ending men’s violence against women and girls, by working to foster positive culture change. This White Ribbon Day we support White Ribbon UK’s campaign to encourage men to become allies to create a more equal society. To mark the end of Bury council’s 16 day campaign we will be holding a White Ribbon Weekend at the club, across our Men’s & Women’s games against Colne and FC United of Manchester on the weekend of Saturday 7th December & Sunday 8th December respectively. Violence against women and girls is rooted in harmful masculine traits. Starting with men, we must address the attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a fear of violence for women in their day-to-day lives. We’re encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women and to each other, so we can affect positive behaviour change to transform harmful cultures and commit to the White Ribbon promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women. 70% of women in the UK say they have experienced sexual harassment in public. (APPG for UN Women, 2021) 3 in 5 women have experienced sexual harassment, bullying or verbal abuse in the workplace. (Trade Unions Congress, 2023) 15% of women in England, and 17% of women in Wales have experienced online violence. (Professor Olga Jurasz, The Open University, 2024) 1.4 million women experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2023. (ONS, 2023) 63% of men agree that men in society aren’t doing enough to ensure the safety of women and girls. (YouGov, 2021) White Ribbon Champions are women, and people who do not identify as being a man, who promote the White Ribbon message and encourage and challenge men to get involved by finding opportunities to inspire and inform. Our Champions can hold us to account and ensure that women’s voices are heard in our work. For more information and to become an ambassador or champion click here. Any concerns of criminality, violence and harm can be reported anonymously via Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 1111 or report online. Make a difference to ensure everyone enjoys the beautiful game and in every walk of life harmful behaviours are called out and tackled. View the full article
