Tony Bartley, 8th March 1938 – 22nd September 2024 Tony Bartley’s football career may have begun with Bury’s traditional local rivals, Bolton Wanderers, but it was Gigg Lane and the Shakers’ supporters with whom he shared a mutual love for the rest of his life. Lance Corporal Bartley played for the Wanderers during his national service in 1956/57 but arrived at Gigg in 1958 via a spell at his hometown club, Stalybridge Celtic. It was the beginning of a seven-year association during which time he was part of one of the most affectionately-remembered squads of the club’s history: the 1960/61 Third Division champions who blasted 108 goals on their way to the second tier. Flying down the left wing, fans of his vintage remember a tenacious, hard-working winger who also weighed in with his fair share of goals, particularly against Stoke City against whom Tony once scored a winner in a match when he shared the pitch with Stanley Matthews. He also found the net in games versus Newcastle, Sunderland, Chelsea and Leeds. With never a hair out of place, he is also remembered for his interactions with his fans, sitting on the perimeter walls of the Boys’ Stand, the South Stand or the Main Stand and joking with supporters as he readied himself to deliver a corner into the opposition area. Ever-present in the 1962/63 season when the harsh winter derailed Bury’s promotion push to the top flight resulting in an eighth-place finish in the Second Division, Tony also played in the game in which Brian Clough sustained his career-ending injury. Years later, the two met again after a game at Blackburn Rovers at which Clough had been managing Nottingham Forest. Clough’s broad smile in the photographic evidence of the meeting is testament to how you couldn’t help be captivated by Tony’s simple joy in life. Spells at Oldham and Chesterfield followed before a move across the Irish Sea to Sligo Rovers as player-manager, but it was always Bury that remained his true footballing love. The emotional video interview he gave to the club during the COVID-19 lockdown highlighted how upset he was at the club’s fate, and also how fondly remembered he was by supporters. It was incredible to be able to welcome Tony back to the ground he loved for the game against Wythenshawe in March 2024. His daughter Lisa remembers how his breath was taken away when he got out of the car and saw the Main Stand before he shouted his familiar cry of ‘Up the Shakers!’ It was, she says, a day of which he enjoyed every second. Devoted to his family, Tony is survived by his wife Sybil whom he married while a Shaker in the 1960 close season, Lisa and her brothers Anthony and John, his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. We recently launched our Junior Shakers scheme for our youngest fans. This weekend we proudly welcomed some of our first members to the stadium to receive their gift pack, meet our mascot, Peeler, and take up the opportunity to be mascots for our Men’s and Women’s teams. Meanwhile we continue to offer local grassroots football teams the opportunity to be flag-bearers at our matches and you may well have seen them taking penalty kicks at half time on the pitch – a great experience for these local youngsters. Soon you will also be seeing our own Bury FC Juniors and community teams at match days as our club ‘Team of the Day’. As well as enjoying a match day experience, they will be doing a lap of honour at half time and we would encourage our fans to give them a warm reception on their way around the pitch as we show our appreciation for the children and adults who represent our club at all ages and levels. Additionally, our community officer Casey Lynchey alongside stadium volunteer and lifelong Bury fan, John Raftery, will be visiting local schools to celebrate all we are doing at Gigg Lane. John will be sharing his wisdom of the club in assemblies and Casey will be offering free coaching sessions. Alongside this offering we will be inviting schools down to watch a match at Gigg Lane and giving out free tickets for families. In the future, we are also planning school tournaments and opportunities for local school children to play on the pitch for free. Shakers go into their midweek home game against Stockport cock-a-hoop after Saturday’s convincing 3-0 Isuzu FA Vase victory over Burscough. The result never looked in doubt after Reuben Jerome opened the scoring in the seventh minute. There were elements of luck in the goal, but it was reward for shrewd use of the long ball against a shaky defence. It was all over bar the shouting by half-time. Defender Ben Hockenhull notched the second from close range following a free kick in the 31st minute and Rustam Stepans grabbed the third goal and his ninth of the season four minutes later. The victory sees us through to the first round proper of the competition on October 19, when we face Chadderton. It takes our encouraging unbeaten start to the season to 16 matches. There were several changes in the Shakers line-up on Saturday, and expect more against Stockport Town as we look ahead to our massive FA Cup game at Radcliffe Borough on Saturday. In Opposition – Stockport Town This is Stockport Town’s first season in the NWCFL Premier Division following their promotion as Division One South runners-up for the second year running. They’ve made a decent start, winning six and losing five of their 13 matches and at the moment are in 10th position in the league table. After losing three games on the bounce to Abbey Hey (H) Burscough (H) and Chadderton (A), Town won their last three – at home to FC St Helens and Prestwich Heys and away at AFC Liverpool. The club was created in 2014, and after a season of matches against some decent sides was accepted into the NWCFL Division One South a year later. A new era began five years ago, when Town was bought by national coaching organisation the Pro Football Academy, which aims to nurture the talent of children aged 5-14. We have been informed this morning, that an extra 200 tickets have been made available to Bury fans ahead of this Saturday’s FA Cup fixture vs Radcliffe. Following feedback on the earlier two phases of the ticket release, we will distribute these 200 tickets to those who are season ticket holders AND members at 7pm tonight (Monday). We expect this allocation to be sold within this distribution. As identified on the ticket receipt, a digital ticket is required to be presented in exchange for an admission ticket supplied by Radcliffe. These tickets can be collected from Gigg Lane across the below time periods this week: Between 6.30 – 7.30pm on Tuesday evening (24th Sept) at our pop-up canopy in the car park, ahead of the Stockport Town game On reception 1.00 – 7.00pm on Thursday (26th Sept) On reception 1.00 – 5.00pm on Friday (27th Sept) We’ve been made aware by several supporters regarding the request for carer tickets. For those who require a carers ticket, you will not be able to collect your ticket on Tuesday, and we request you attend one of the later slots in the week to collect. Please make sure you bring relevant documentation to collect a carers ticket. Due to our hosts not having a carers ticket category, these tickets will be chargeable at £15. Gigg Lane will be closed on Wednesday for works to the electrical systems, so no collections can be made on that day. We have several fixture updates to update you on following our progression in recent cup competitions. Our originally scheduled league game for Saturday 24th August away at Litherland REMYCA, which had to be moved due to both teams being in FA Vase action, will now take place on Wednesday 30th October. On Saturday 31st August, we were due to travel to Charnock Richard but our FA Cup tie at Garforth saw this postponed, this game will now take place on Tuesday 22nd October. Next Saturday (28th September) we had a scheduled league game against FC St Helens which was postponed due to our FA Cup tie with Radcliffe. This has been re-arranged for Saturday 5th November. Following yesterday’s FA Vase win against Burscough – our game against Charnock Richard at Gigg Lane on Saturday 19th October will now be postponed. A new date will be announced in due course. We can confirm Alex Cherera has been called up for the Zimbabwe National U20’s Team. Alex has begun travelling today (Sunday) to meet up with the squad, and as a result will miss the next four games: Tuesday 24th Sept vs Stockport Town (H) Saturday 28th Sept vs Radcliffe (A) Tuesday 1st Oct vs Chadderton (H) Saturday 5th Oct vs Longridge Town (A) He will take part in three games in COSAFA U20 Challenge Cup, a trophy his country have won six times. They will play Botswana on Thursday, Eswatini on Saturday and Mozambique the following Monday. It’s back to knock-out football as the Shakers face NWCFL rivals Burscough in the Isuzu FA Vase second qualifying round (kick-off 3.00pm). This follows hard on the heels of Tuesday’s thrilling 1-1 away NWCFL draw with league leaders and local rivals Ramsbottom United and last Saturday’s thumping 3-0 FA Cup away victory over Blyth Spartans. The games keep coming as we progress in two cup competitions and try to catch up with an early season deficit in league games played. Rustam Stepans scored the spectacular equaliser against the Rams. Facing away from goal and with his marker at his back, Stepans flicked the ball over his head with his right foot and turned to volley it into the net with his left. The goals at Blyth came from Alex Cherera, Bebeto Gomes and Connor Pye – his first for the club. And what a game they set up! The draw on Monday paired the Shakers with ultimate local rivals Radcliffe Borough in the third qualifying round. The Isuzu FA Vase is the leading knock-out competition for tiers 9 and 10 of the English football league system. We’d like to provide an update on our hospitality processes. A number of supporters have attempted to buy hospitality tickets after the catering deadlines. Our deadline for Saturday matches is Wednesday at 12 noon, and for Tuesday matches, it is Saturday at 12 noon. It’s important for us to stick to these deadlines so our caterers can prepare the correct amount of food, avoiding excess waste. A reminder that tickets for our Sponsors Lounge is £55 + VAT, whilst 1885 Suite is £35 including VAT. Our 2024 Bury Football Club Golf Day took place last Friday, and another successful event was laid on with the golfing experts (& some novices!) taking to the course for a day of competition and fun. Fore! The team including the ex-Bury legends tee-off on the Bury Football Club Golf Day 2024 The event raised over £2,500 for the club on a sunny day at Pike Fold Golf Club. The course was in superb condition, matching the tremendous autumnal weather and had guests from 360 Vehicle Management Ltd taking the main prize, with a Stableford score of 99 after 18-holes. We were delighted to welcome ex-Shakers Dean West, David Lee and Mark Patterson (shown right, l-r) on the event. In addition to the club funds raised, a kindly donated prize from Ageas for a box at the Royal Albert Hall to watch Cirque du Soleil raised a magnificent £1,000 which was donated to the Len Johnrose Trust. The club wishes to place on record its thanks to the organising commitee, led by Mike Bailey, who worked so hard to put this event on. We also wish to thank all of our generous sponsors and raffle prize donors who contributed to the success of the day. We can’t wait to invite everyone back in 2025. Radcliffe FC have informed us that they intend to make 600 tickets available for Bury supporters for our Third Round Qualifying clash on Saturday 28th September. We will follow our ticketing process of issuing access to tickets online over the coming weekend to the following brackets of supporters: – those who are both Members AND Season Ticket Holders – those who are either Members OR Season Ticket Holders – where tickets remain then on General Sale As has become standard practice when processing tickets to away games where the ticket availability is limited, supporters will receive email communication from the club when tickets become available. Supporters who are successful in purchasing a ticket, will be required to collect a ticket from Gigg Lane prior to the game to gain admission on the day. Our online issued tickets will not be accepted on the gate on the day. The timeline around ticket availability and pick-up times at Gigg Lane will follow later in the week.
