We are delighted to confirm two of our volunteers have been nominated at the Manchester FA Grassroots Awards. Sam Harman has been nominated in the category of the Manchester FA Bobby Moore Award whilst Casey Lynchey has been nominated in the category of the Manchester FA Lioness Award. The prestigious Bobby Moore Award is reserved for the volunteer who best represents the heart and soul of volunteering in grassroots football, whilst the Lioness Award recognises an individual or group who has created new opportunities in the female game and has had a big impact in their community, on and off the pitch. Sam is the club’s Volunteer Co-Ordinator, she manages our large and growing band of volunteers to help out in various roles in fundraising and administration as well as various roles on Matchdays. She has taken responsibility for ensuring that we have sufficient volunteers for such roles as security, merchandising, half-time draw ticket sales, programme sales. Sam has also taken on a role of encouraging new volunteers and retaining our valuable existing volunteers. Whilst Casey has been an active member as the Head of Women’s Football on the Football Board of Bury FC. She has taken responsibility for the creation and administration of up to seven Bury FC Women’s Team (including our promotion-winning Bury FC Women’s First Team) leads in the club’s participation in #HerGameToo and has taken responsibility for ensuring a positive matchday experience for numerous excited mascots. She’s recently been appointed as the club’s Community Development Officer, a new role in which she looks after all community aspects of the club including the new artificial pitch. CEO, Neil Sears commented on the nominations: “We are delighted to have Bury FC represented by Sam and Casey at these prestigious awards. To reach the final 3 in each category is a tremendous accomplishment and fully deserved achievement by both women. “Sam and Casey embody everything that Bury FC is about, Casey recently was appointed as our community development officer as well as her continued work being Head of Women’s football. Casey has worked tirelessly and also commits many hours of volunteering to the football club. “Matchdays simply wouldn’t happen without Sam Harman, she is passionate and leads a large team on a matchday and is always there for many volunteers providing support whenever it’s needed. “We as a club will be in attendance at the awards hopefully watching Sam and Casey bring home the awards.” The ceremony will be held at the Sheridan Suite in Manchester on November 15th. This weekend our U10 boys team are travelling over to the Isle of Man to represent our great town and club at the same time as the Men’s first team. A massive thank you to the boots on the ground in Isle of Man, Gary McAuley for helping to organise the fixtures and Lee Dixon of FC Isle of Man for making the lads weekend even more special by allowing them to be Mascots for the game on Saturday, a penalty shootout at half time and tickets for the hospitality lounge, its going to be a weekend to remember for them! The boys will be playing four games across the weekend, one on the Saturday & a mini tournament on the Sunday. Ahead of our upcoming trip to the Isle of Man, please see below our guidance notes for supporters wishing to get the most out of their time on the island around our game against FC Isle of Man on Saturday. The Bowl FC Isle of Man play their home games at the The Bowl, a 3,500 all-seater multi-purpose sports ground which was redeveloped suitable to hold the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games. The game will be played on an artificial surface and tickets for the game are to be purchased ahead of the game from the FC Isle of Man website. Hospitality tickets are also available for £45, with full details on the left. Home and visiting supporters will be segregated into two separate areas within the Bowl. Bury fans are directed to Gate B at the north end of the ground as indicated on the image to the right. Food / drink kiosks will be available, but alcohol will NOT be available inside the ground and is not permitted to be brought into the stadium. Mark Carter is our guest for tonight’s fixture with South Liverpool, Pete Cullen looks back on his career. It was surely one of the best ever £6,000 that Bury Football Club spent when they paid that modest amount to bring Mark Carter north to Gigg Lane in September 1993. Spike was already approaching 33 at the time but having been introduced to the professional ranks relatively late in his career, he certainly grasped his perhaps unexpected chance. Starting out on the books of Liverpool as a teenager, he moved into the local non-league scene with today’s visitors South Liverpool, Bangor City and most prolifically at Runcorn. Barry Fry then took Spike to Underhill in February 1991 and he helped Barnet gain promotion into the Football League the following May. He scored 34 league and cup goals in his first full season there and 14 in his second, which prompted Mike Walsh to secure the striker’s services. He was an immediate success with the Shakers and bagged 20 goals in his debut season. The following year he claimed 15 goals as the Shakers earned a Play-off place, and he played in that heartbreaking 2-0 play-off final defeat at Wembley in May 1995. He remained an immediate choice in the team once Stan Ternent took over as Bury boss and scored 18 goals as the Shakers were promoted from Division Three in 1996. The goals kept coming too as Bury made it back-to-back promotions and Spike played in 30 league games as Ternent’s boys claimed the Division Two Championship and a shot in what is now the Championship. Playing colleagues used to relate stories about how laid-back Spike was before a game, just sitting doing a crossword in the corner of the dressing room right up to kick-off time, but he always delivered and contributed greatly in what was one of the most successful periods in the club’s more recent history. 62 league goals in 134 games is a fantastic ratio by anyone’s standards. We return to league action tomorrow evening, with the visit of South Liverpool to Gigg Lane. Dave McNabb’s side made it 10 games unbeaten in all competitions, with a 2-0 win away at Garforth Town, booking in our place in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Alex Cherera & Lewis Alessandra scored on either side of the break. Cherera now has five FA Cup goals this season. The draw has just been made for the next round, and we head to either Campion or Blyth Spartans in the next round on Saturday 14th September. They replay this Wednesday, following a 1-1 draw at the weekend. Focusing back on the league and ahead of Tuesday’s game, we sit five points off the league leaders Ramsbottom United, with three games in hand created by our cup exploits in both the FA Cup and FA Vase this season so far. This was courtesy of a play-off final win on penalities against Ashton Town in April. Manager Martin Ryman has been at the helm of the club since 2001 and is South’s longest ever serving manager and also played for South between 1992 and 2000. Ryman’s side have won one from their opening seven league games and sit in 21st in the table. Our women’s first team hosts Mancunian Unity FC on Sunday, following a second consecutive win at Gigg Lane, with the Shakers looking to make it nine points in three games. Following their promotion from Division One North, Mancunian Unity currently sit seventh in the table. Out of four games played so far this season, Unity have experienced a turbulent campaign, losing 6-1 to Darwen Women and 4-0 to Wythenshawe Women. They have drawn 2-2 against FC United of Manchester, but their most recent match saw them achieve their first win of the 2024-25 season, in an 8-0 victory over Curzon Ashton. Dave McNabb has offered a status update on the players currently on the injured list at Gigg Lane below ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup tie with Garforth Town. Macauley Wilson – Macauley limped out of Monday’s match with Cheadle Town late on with a knee injury. It’s still too early to assess how severe the injury is at the moment due to the swelling but we’re hopeful it will only be a week or two. Ben Hockenhull – Ben has a very minor knock to his knee that kept him out last weekend and he returned to full training this week. He is however cup-tied for the FA Cup, so will be unavailable on Saturday. Brad Carroll – Brad continues his recovery and is working through the early stages of his rehabilitation with the medical team. Sam Coughlan – Sam missed Monday’s match with Cheadle Town with a small knock. He has returned to training this week and is available for selection at the weekend. Morgan Homson Smith – Morgan continues to struggle with an ankle injury picked up during pre-season. He has taken the opportunity to take an extended break in Dubai with his family whilst he recovers from the injury with the medical team working with him remotely on his rehabilitation. Jack Dunn – Unfortunately, Jack has had another small setback with a minor hamstring strain. He has been working so hard to get back available for selection and has been very unlucky with further injuries. This is to be expected as he returns following a very serious knee injury that kept him out for over 18 months. Andy Briggs – Andy had a very minor operation on his left leg last week, but has returned to training this week and is available for selection at the weekend. We can confirm the departure of forward Connor Comber. We have been informed by another club that Connor has agreed to sign for them. We haven’t had any contact with him for a number of weeks. Numerous attempts have been made to contact him with no response. Connor had been struggling with a knee injury sustained towards the end of pre-season, which left him out the squad in initial weeks. The 23-year-old made 85 appearances for the club scoring 29 goals and making 22 assists. We would like to wish him all the best for the future. View the full article

Our women’s first team hosts Fleetwood Town Wrens following a successful first home game at Gigg Lane, with the Shakers looking to build on the strength they delivered over the bank holiday weekend.
 Fleetwood Town Wrens finished eighth in the table last season, just one place above Bury. Out of two games played so far in the 2024-25 season, the Wrens drew 3-3 against FC United of Manchester, and lost 4-3 against Crewe Alexandra, currently sitting eight in the table compared to Bury’s third place seat. In the most recent meeting between the sides we saw a level draw with each team scoring a goal, back in March. Earlier in the season, in Bury’s home fixture, the Shakers came out on top in what was an impressive 3-1 win. It’s the final game in our Gigg Lane triple header this week, as we host Cheadle Town on Bank Holiday Monday. Saturday saw us book our place into the next round of the FA Vase, with a 3-1 win over Maghull. After a goalless first half. Iyrwah Gooden got the first goal inside five second half minutes, before Bebeto Gomes poked home from close range on 73 minutes. Maghull’s Adam Hammill grabbed a goal back with an amazing free kick, whilst Alik Babayan sealed the victory in stoppage time. We return to the league action in sixth position, five points off league leaders Ramsbottom who picked up another league victory on Saturday, in one of the five league games played whilst the Shakers were in cup action.
