  3. In our last outing Dave McNabbs men put Skelmersdale United to the sword in an emphatic 10 – 1 victory. A result that is a new league record for The Shakers surpassing the 8 – 0 set against Huddersfield Town way back in January 1970. Goals for; Andy Briggs, Connor Comber, Andy Scarisbrick, Dec Daniels, Arthur Lomax-Jones, Benito Lowe, Sam Burns and a debut hattrick for local lad Jacob Holland-Wilkinson left the Gigg Lane faithful in no doubt that the team has their eyes fully set on the task ahead of them in the next fifteen games. Our next outing see’s us travel to St Helens to face another Merseyside team, Pilkington Football Club. The last time the two sides met it was a closely contested affair until the final 10 minutes with Bury putting the foot on the pedal, piling on the pressure to come away with a 3-1 win. We will be facing a much changed and very youthful Pilks side as manager Ste Palfrey stepped back following the November fixture at Gigg, making way for Matt Potter and Kev Langley to take the Glass’ reigns sparking a transformation of the playing squad, as is often the case at this level. Get down to the Arcoframe on Saturday and help us bring the three points back to Bury as we continue our push for promotion. You can view the highlights from our last outing and the latest episode of Playing Away below. ‘Playing Away’ – Episode Seven Opponents – Pilkington Football Club Pilkington Football Club, officially founded in 1938, boasts a rich history rooted in the Pilkington glass factory in St Helens. Originating from workers’ teams in the 19th century, the club officially formed in 1938 after the amalgamation of St Helens’ works teams. The early years were marked by participation in various leagues, with the club joining the Mid-Cheshire League in 1983/84. Over the decades, managerial changes and league challenges characterized the club’s journey. Notably, the 1992/93 season marked a shift in focus towards youth development under Dave Burrows. The late 1990s witnessed the 1st Team’s ascent, securing promotion in 1997/98. The early 2000s saw a rejuvenation led by managers Dave Burrows and Andy Hockenhull, achieving success in the Liverpool Junior Cup. The 2010s brought managerial changes and a renewed emphasis on professionalism. The club experienced both relegation and promotion, with Ste Palfrey taking over in 2015/16. The 2017/18 season marked a turning point, with Pilkington FC achieving promotion to the Cheshire League Premier Division and expanding its junior and women’s teams. The 2019/20 season saw the club enter the North West Counties Football League, Division One North. Managerial changes occurred in 2020/21, with Ste Palfrey returning for his third spell. In the 2022/23 season, Pilkington FC triumphed as North West Counties First Division North Champions, culminating in their third promotion in five seasons. The club’s growth extends beyond the men’s senior team, now fielding multiple women’s and junior teams, showcasing a flourishing community presence. 6. There was a short delay in the game restarting towards the end of the 90 minutes on Saturday due to three people attempting to enter the playing area. They were stopped from getting onto the pitch by stewards. Two of them did not co-operate and took some time to be restrained and removed. We have a number of eye witness statements, as well as video evidence, and are conducting our own investigation. We will act to protect the club and everyone working at the club from this behaviour. Where there are possible criminal offences, we will hand over evidence to the police to review. We have also made a number of policy decisions to further protect the club. These include: We will suspend the sale of alcohol in the stands during the game as a minimum and consider an outright ban. Starkies Bar will remain open before and after games, and the 1885 Suite will operate as usual for those ticket holders. We will release more information on this once a decision has been made. We will enforce stricter stewarding to prevent any potential encroachment of the pitch, including stopping anyone standing near the pitch during the game. We will ask players to be mindful where they celebrate goals and avoid areas where people are congregating. We know people have historically congregated in the corner of the South and West (Manchester Road End) Stands at the end of games for decades, as they have looked for a quick exit from the ground. Nowadays matches last for an additional five or ten minutes and it’s hard to know when the final whistle will be. Please stay in your seats until the final whistle where you can use any of three exits to leave the South Stand. These are behind the the Manchester Road End, in front of the Manchester Road End or through the Cemetery End. There is no need for anyone to stand before the final whistle other than to leave the stadium or go to the lavatory. We all recognise that an incredibly small percentage of Bury supporters are responsible for the problems we’ve faced in recent weeks, and it is bitterly disappointing that two or three people in a crowd of well over 3,000 can ruin the enjoyment of football for us all. However, we have to act now in the belief that we can then return to a more relaxed atmosphere in the future. We are concerned that the consumption of excessive alcohol is an enabler to anti-social behaviour. Today we should be talking about football, not crowd behaviour, but we will continue to punish and prevent anti-social behaviour where we find it. View the full article

  10. January comes to a close (we can’t believe it either), and we hope beyond hope that we can get a game on in what has felt like too long! The Shakers last took to the field almost two weeks ago when we dispatched Litherland REMYCA (highlights below) and in doing so, keeping up with those at the top of the league in the process. Due to the weather playing havoc with fixtures across the league, there has not been much change since with Wythenshawe Town remaining top by a point, with Wythenshawe, Chadderton and Prestwich close behind. Skelmersdale arrive in BL9 in a spot of bother at the foot of the division, but were the last side to take full points off Dave McNabb’s side back in November. During an out-of-sorts first half performance, the Shakers fell behind to a Mark Bollongino header just before half-time. A rejuvenated Bury side were just getting to grips with forcing a way back into the game at the start of the second half, when a mix-up at the back gifted the home side a two-goal lead. This was ultimately the tale of the game and despite Skem being reduced to 10-men, only a late Sam Burns’ consolation penalty was to show for the visiting sides efforts on the day. The lads will be looking to put this right this weekend, and they need you there to do just that. Get behind the team by being ‘Part of It’ at Gigg Lane this weekend – get all your match information below! In Opposition – Skelmersdale United In its initial 75 years, Skelmersdale United emerged from the Skelmersdale Wesleyan Day School’s team, evolving through various name changes, finally settling as Skelmersdale United. Joining the Lancashire Combination in 1891, they navigated challenges, winning their first major trophy in 1908. Noteworthy figures like Tom Tinsley and a move to White Moss Park marked this era. The club underwent a significant transformation in 1961 when Skelmersdale became a designated new town. Under Wesley Bridge’s management, the team restructured, achieving success in the FA Amateur Cup and entering the Northern Premier League in 1971. However, by 1976, United faced a decline, eventually finding themselves in the North West Counties League. The club experienced highs and lows over subsequent years, including financial struggles and a temporary homelessness episode. Under Tommy Lawson’s management, Skelmersdale ascended to the Northern Premier League Premier Division in the 2012–2013 season, marking their highest position in non-league football. The following years brought both success and challenges, with notable events such as relegation in 2017. Despite a rollercoaster journey, Skelmersdale United achieved promotion in the 2021/22 season under manager Paul McNally, only to face relegation in 2022/23 due to ground grading issues. In October 2023, former Premier League defender Pascal Chimbonda took on the role of manager, steering the club into a new chapter. This season so far, the club sits at the foot of the table with just six wins from their 31 games. And with their win over landlords Burscough on Boxing Day declared null and void following an ineligable player being included in the team, they are nine points behind the Linnets in their quest to avoid relegation. However, there has been a bit of a renaissance since the turn of the year with two wins out of three. 11. Once again, the weather has beaten us and this has resulted in a postponement of tonight’s fixture against Ramsbottom United at Gigg Lane. After last week’s freezing temperatures and increased levels in rainfall, with first Storm Isha over the weekend and the incoming Storm Jocelyn from today, has left large volumes of water sat on top of the Gigg Lane turf, after being in good condition only this morning following a dry spell on Monday. An early afternoon inspection was called when there was no sign that the water was draining away and rain continued to fall. A new date will be confirmed in due course, and tickets will be valid for the rearranged fixture. Next Up: Skelmersdale United (H) We hope to back at Gigg Lane in quick time when Skelmersdale head into town this Saturday for the next game in the NWCFL Premier Division. Tickets, as always, are available below: Match Tickets View the full article
  12. As we all sat at home twiddling our thumbs this weekend after another cancellation, we watched the thaw slowly take hold and pitches across the north-west started to breathe again. Hopefully that is the end of the freezing conditions as we rocket towards the end of January and look to resume battle in the league. We will be keeping a watchful eye however, over the incoming weather in the hours leading up to the game. Head to social media ( X / Facebook ) or right here at buryfc.co.uk for all the latest updates. If it is ‘GAME ON’, what better way to pick matters up than in a local derby, as we welcome Ramsbottom United for their first competitive fixture at Gigg Lane. A Macron Cup fixture at The Harry Williams Riverside Stadium last November being the only previous meeting between the two sides, with late goals from both sides leading to a dramatic 2-2 draw and equally dramatic penalty shoot-out. The Shakers came out on top thanks to a Gaz Peet top corner finish as we headed into sudden death. Highlights of that game can be found below. For all the details of this big local derby as we finally meet in the league, can be found below in the full match information pack. Head down for opposition details, tickets, parking and live match coverage. In Opposition – Ramsbottom United Beginning life in 1966, Ramsbottom United began life as a local amateur side building a junior setup that remains an integral part of the club over 50 years later. You can’t say Ramsbottom United without immediately thinking of current (and forever!) Chairman Harry Williams. Involved from the start, you can still find Harry behind the scenes on a matchday, whether it be in the ticket booth, or dishing out pies in the food hut. A stalwart of the club and ex-manager of the first team (1966-1985), who’s name adorns the stadium that the Rams have been based at since 1980. We continue to wish him well after a recent fall has meant some time in recovery. We certainly hope he is well enough to visit Gigg Lane for this special local fixture. Following success in both Bury Amateur and Bolton Combination leagues through the late 60s and 70s, the club made the step up into the Manchester League in 1989 before applying to join the NWCFL in the mid-90s. The ground received its grading, with the club gaining promotion from Division Two in 1997, at the same point as they acquired floodlights from local rugby side, Oldham Rugby League Club. The Rams remained competitive until tradegy struck in 2001 when manager of the time, Ken Bridge, collapsed and died following a game against Cheadle Town. This stunted some of the club’s progress, before in 2009, Harry handed the reins to players at the time – Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson, for their first tilt at management. They made their name in fine style, earning promotion for the first time to the NPL in 2012. Further progression and development of both the ground and playing squad occurred and after just two seasons at the elevated level, they achieved a further promotion following a play-off campaign which first overcame favourites Darlington and then Bamber Bridge to reach the third tier for the first time. Bernard and Jonno left for the ‘Class of ’92’ and Salford City later that year, sending the club in a spin which they were unable to turn around until ex-player Chris Wilcox was appointed in October 2018. An FA Trophy run into the last-16, defeated only by high-flying AFC Fylde, was a highlight for the Willcock’s tenure which without the onset of Covid-19 would no doubt have earned the club a further promotion in that period. Willcock moved on in 2021 to Workington and the club’s results faltered afterwards, with Lee Donafee struggling to maintain a position in the top half of the league and being replaced, with incumbant David Chadwick unable to keep the Rams in the NPL, with the side slipping back into the NWCFL last summer. Former Northwich Victoria manager Steve Wilkes took over the reins for this season, and has the team sat in 15th, with nine wins and seven draws from 27 games so far. The side head into the game with only one point in the last five, losing last time out to Skelmersdale United. 13. Bury FC are delighted to confirm the signing of Arthur Lomax-Jones from Bootle for an undisclosed fee. The 19-year-old started at Tranmere’s youth setup before moving to Wigan in 2009 where he played through the ranks until Under 18s, where he then made the move back to Prenton Park. Lomax joined Bootle from Tranmere last summer and has made 38 appearances for the Bucks, a number at the start of the season under Dave McNabb. He was recalled from his loan at NPL West side, Widnes to be able to sign for the Shakers. Manager Dave McNabb commented on his latest addition: “Arthur is an exciting player who can play left back, in midfield or as a winger. “A pro last season at Tranmere he has a great pedigree and a ton of potential to keep pushing up the leagues.” Lomax-Jones added: “I’m made up to finally get this over the line. “Bury is a massive club and I like the direction the club is heading. I’m looking forward to linking back up with the manager and making my debut at Gigg Lane very soon.” Arthur will be eligible to face Ramsbottom United on Tuesday evening. 15. After the weather put paid to a mid-week top-of-the-table clash against Wythenshawe, attention turned to Park Road this weekend as we take on Cheadle Town this Saturday. And a repeat of last Saturday’s performance, will do nicely if Dave McNabb’s charges can put another show for the travelling faithful. Two goals each from Andy Briggs and newly-crowned league player of the month, Dec Daniels, alongside a return to the goalscoring charts for Andy Scarisbrick and another goal for youngster Joe Hobson resulted in a 6-0 hammering at Litherland Sports Park. Highlights can be found below. The win kept up the pace in the league, with both Wythenshawe’s winning also, the race for top spot continues to hot up. The increase in the temperature for the league can be directly linked to the drop off in air temperature nationwide, with many games impacted by the freezing conditions over weekend and then the snow that came in to follow. The low temperatures are set to continue until Friday, with a hope of improvement in time for the game. Keep across our social media profiles in the run up to kick-off for the latest up-to-date information. For your all matchday details, we spoke to Cheadle Town Social Media Manager, Jamie Lynch about what supporters can expect as we make our first competitive visit to Park Road, in this week’s ‘Playing Away’ episode on YouTube. A link to that is below. ‘Playing Away’ – Episode Six Opponents – Cheadle Town The club was established in 1961 (as Grasmere Rovers), playing U16s Sunday league football in the Manchester & District League, developing up to U21s and winning their first championship in 1968, with a Premier Division title two seasons later. The club made the step up into Saturday football by entering the Manchester League in 1972, moving in Park Road Stadium ten years later. A year later and now known by its current name, the club joined the newly-formed NWCFL. One promotion to the top tier of the leagues was achieved in 1996, which they relinquished in 2001. With hopes high for a return to the top flight last season, the club achieved that under the stewardship of current manager Paul Marshall with a 3-1 play-off win against Sandbach United last summer. Town have had a tough start to life back in the Premier Division and lie in 20th going into the weekend, with nine wins and four draws from 27 games so far. A run of four losses at the end of December has been improved upon with back-to-back wins as we’ve entered 2024, winning 5-0 and 3-1 respectively at Barlick and AFC Liverpool. Follow this road (the A560) and go straight ahead at the next set of lights, taking you through Cheadle village with The White Hart pub and St Mary’s Church on the left. 18. Bury Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of Jacob Holland-Wilkinson from Lancaster City, subject to league approval. Jacob Holland-Wilkinson joins the Shakers Manager Dave McNabb swooped in to bring the talented attacking midfielder to Gigg Lane to bolster the engine room as we head into the business end of the season. Bury-born Jacob, 21, is a Preston North End academy graduate, leaving Deepdale after reserve team appearances for the Lilywhites and in search of first team football. That search resulted in a move to Stoke City in 2022. Appearences for the Under-21 side followed, as well as two loan stints with the Dolly Blues where he racked up a total of 10 appearances and two goals. Following release from Stoke, Lancaster signed him up permenantly in the summer of 2023. So far this term, Jacob has scored three goals in 21 appearances in the Northern Premier League. Manager Dave McNabb states Holland-Wilkinson offers another attacking midfield option: “Jacob is a player I’ve tracked for a while now since watching him play for Preston’s youth team. “As an attacking midfielder who can play through the centre or from the side, he’s very intelligent and is excellent technically. A welcome addition to the group and we look forward to working with him and developing his game.” Jacob is expected to be involved in the matchday squad for Saturday’s trip to Cheadle Town. Tickets can be purchased here. Welcome to Bury, Jacob! #ShakersTogether | #BuryFC | #PartofIt View the full article
  19. We are delighted to announce that Declan Daniels has been named NWCFL Premier Division Player of the Month for Decemeber 2023. Following his move from Irlam in early December, the striker has won Man of the Match from the opponents in each game, scoring three goals in the process, making him the easy choice for the league award last month. His form has continued into 2024 so far also, taking his tally to six goals in total, as well as adding a further Man of the Match award against his old club the first game of 2024 – bagging a penalty in the process. This is our second league recognised award of the season, after Harry Wright’s goalkeeper award in October. Well done Dec, keep it up! You can relive Dec’s first goal for the club on his debut, away at Longridge Town, below: #ShakersTogether | #BuryFC | #PartofIt View the full article

  22. We can confirm that the FA have agreed to a stay of the sanction requiring us to close Gigg Lane to supporters whilst the appeal is heard. There will be no sanctions until the appeal process concludes. This means that our game against Wythenshawe will be open for supporters of both sides to attend. We are, however, mindful of the weather and potential for a postponement due to a frozen pitch so continue to advise supporters not to purchase tickets in advance at this stage purely for that reason.
