Club Statement
Bury Football Club has been informed by Manchester FA that an independent committee has decided that due to the offensive comments made by two supporters during our game against West Didsbury and Chorlton in September, we should be forced to play our next two home games behind closed doors. We reported the incident at the time, and provided video and other evidence to the police to assist their enquiries at some considerable cost to the club. We have not disputed the claims made. The individuals have not yet had their case heard by the law enforcement authorities and have been prevented from entering the stadium indefinitely whilst we await the outcome. Our grounds for appeal are limited. We have accepted the facts of the incident, and do not believe that we acted in a way which was anything other than responsible and measured. We accept that the two individuals involved could have been removed from the stadium immediately but the stewards took a view at the time to stop any further problems and review the situation afterwards. We paid additional money to a CCTV specialist to review footage and provided this to the police. Our stewarding costs are £3-4,000 per game, it is not something we take lightly. The basis of our appeal is that the punishment is excessive. We have seen multiple incidents over recent years of groups of supporters collectively issuing racist, misogynistic and homophobic abuse, as well as tragedy chanting. These have gone unpunished or have been dealt with by fines. We acted on the day. We are unable to completely control the words of two people in a crowd of 3,838 on that particular occasion. We accept there should be a punishment, but excluding every well-behaved football supporter from a stadium which has already excluded those who perpetrated the offences, does nothing to promote inclusion. The loss of revenue is extremely damaging and our belief is that it would be far better to use that revenue to fund a campaign intended to positively promote diversity and inclusion. Football needs to change, this would help make that change. A stadium closure throws this opportunity away and is likely to ignite a more divisive and polarised debate on these important issues. We have taken huge strides to actively promote diversity and inclusion since forming the club and have raised money and awareness throughout the borough through the hard work of our volunteers, many of whom will be deeply dismayed by this judgement as it punishes them despite their efforts. For this reason we intend to appeal. It is not because we are in any way dismissive of the issues involved. The appeal process will take a number of weeks and we will continue to play in front of supporters during this period, and we will keep supporters updated as to any progress made as it happens. We are also concerned that this specific judgment has been published publicly whilst matters are still being considered by the relevant law enforcement authorities. View the full article

New Signing: Ollie Kilner
Bury Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of Ollie Kilner on loan from Oldham Athletic, subject to league approval. Ollie Kilner – Image courtesy of Oldham Athletic The highly-sought after 19-year-old defender joins the club on a deal until the end of the season. Kilner started his career as an 8-year-old at Manchester United where he captained his age groups through until Under 16s. Following a broken leg, he signed a scholarship with the Red Devils before joining Oldham in July 2021. Kilner said: “I am very happy to be joining Bury and looking forward to getting games under my belt and helping the team. “Having watched the game at the weekend I am really looking forward to playing at Gigg Lane in front of the fans.” Manager Dave McNabb says Kilner offers another option across the defence and midfield positions. “Really excited to get this one over the line. Oliver is a lad I’ve tracked for a while. He was very highly thought of coming through the academy at Manchester United. Unfortunately, Oliver has been a little unlucky with a couple of injuries at key moments in his career. “He’s a great lad, can play anywhere across the defensive line as well as in midfield so gives us lots of flexibility. Extremely competent on the ball with a great engine and I’m sure he will fit in perfectly.” Ollie is expected to be involved in the matchday squad for Saturday’s trip to Litherland REMYCA. Tickets can be purchased here. Welcome to Bury, Ollie! #ShakersTogether | #BuryFC | #PartofIt View the full article

Match Info: Litherland REMYCA (A), Sat 13th Jan, 3pm KO
The Shakers chalked up another three points this past Saturday in front of a bumper Gigg Lane crowd of 3304, putting on a sensational attacking display in the second half and putting Irlam to the sword to jump back to the top of the North West Counties Premier Division. Goals came from all three available strikers; with Dec Daniels slotting home a penalty past his former club, Andy Briggs taking advantage of a wayward back pass to power through and smash home, and finally Joe Hobson with a proper poachers effort in the 98th minute. Dec Daniels was awarded his 5th Man Of The Match award in a row which is definitely a Shaker’s non-league-era record but we will have to check the record books to see if it’s been done by any other player previously. We now move on to Saturday and a trip to Litherland Sports Park to face Litherland REMYCA, a side currently sitting 12th in the table with a record of 12 wins, 12 defeats, and 4 draws. You can watch the highlights from Saturday’s victory over Irlam and the latest episode of Playing Away below. Playing Away Episode Five Opponents The club was established in 1959 as St Thomas Football Club and were initially based in Seaforth. They were later renamed Bootle Church Lads Brigade, with Bootle YMCA becoming the club’s base. In 1967 they became REM Social after a local working men’s club started financing the club, before being renamed REMYCA United the following year, the name reflecting links with the REM social club and the Bootle YMCA. Under the new name the club joined Division Three of the I Zingari Alliance, winning it at the first attempt. After winning higher divisions in successive seasons, the club entered the I Zingari League. The 1975–76 season saw REMYCA win the league’s Challenge Cup, and the club were league champions in 1987–88. In 1990–91 they won the Lancashire Amateur Cup. The mid-1990s were a highly-successful period for the club as they won both the league title and the Challenge Cup in three successive seasons between 1993–94 and 1995–96, before winning the Challenge Cup again in 1998–99. In 2001 they joined the newly re-established Division Two of the Liverpool County Combination. The two divisions merged into one the following season, but the club withdrew from the league midway through the 2002–03 season. REMYCA returned to the I Zingari League and were Division Two champions in 2005–06. The league then merged with the Liverpool County Combination to form the Liverpool County Premier League, with the club placed in Division Two. They won the division in the league’s inaugural season and were promoted to Division One. After a third-place finish in 2009–10 the club were promoted to the Premier Division. In 2013 they were renamed Litherland REMYCA. A fifth-place finish in the Premier Division in 2013–14 was enough to earn promotion to Division One of the North West Counties League. In 2016–17 Litherland finished third in Division One, qualifying for the promotion play-offs; after beating Sandbach United 1–0 in the semi-finals, they lost 3–0 at home to City of Liverpool in the final in front of a record crowd of 1,303. Match Info: Irlam FC (H), Sat 6th Jan, 3pm KO
With the weather seemingly calming down since Tuesday’s game fell victim to days of endless rain, we shift our focus to this coming Saturday and the visit of Irlam FC. After going through the whole of December unbeaten in the North West Counties Premier League, Dave McNabb’s charges have eighteen games left in the hunt for the League title and promotion. With us currently sitting in second place, two points behind Wythenshawe who we have a game in on hand following Tuesday’s postponement. The promotion hunt will continue and keep our current momentum going against an Irlam side who have struggled to get a game on in recent weeks and currently sit in 18th after playing only 20 games so far this season, eight less than the Shakers. Former Irlam man, Dec Daniels will be loooking to keep his run of great form going against his old club. The forward has scored three goals and has picked up the oppositions Man Of The Match Award in his first four starts in blue and white. You can see Dec’s third goal in the highlights from our last outing, away at AFC Liverpool below. In Opposition – Irlam IRLAM FOOTBALL CLUB began life as Mitchell Shackleton Football Club, founded in October 1969 by a group of employees working for Mitchell Shackleton Limited, a well established engineering company based in Eccles, which manufactured marine and diesel crankshafts. The founding members of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club were Bob Cowlishaw (Chairman), Bill Russell (Secretary) and Charlie Flynn (Treasurer, who served the Club also served as Secretary with distinction from 1981 until his death in 1994). They were ably supported by a Committee comprising of Alf Johnson (now Club President), Ged Moore (Kit Manager) and Stan Catlin (Team Manager). Although the Cub has been in existence for over 30 years, Mitchell Shackleton FC can trace teams playing under the Company’s banner as far back as 1935. Initially, the Football Club was financially supported through the Company’s active Sports and Social Club, however the recession of the late 1970’s led to the Company restructuring its business interests, and unfortunately a reduction in the workforce. These events inevitably led to the dissolution of the Sports and Social Club, and a splintering of the various sporting sections with each individual group becoming self-financing. The Club initially entered the Eccles Amateur league before moving in 1972 to the Manchester Amateur league where there reputation began to grow. Third Division (1973-74) and Second Division (1974-75) Championships were won consecutively, and a reserve section was created as the Clubs profile grew. During this period, a re-structuring of the League saw Mitchells competing in the Industrial ‘B’ Division, in which the Club were runners-up in 1979-80. In season 1983-84, Mitchells finished Industrial ‘A’ Division runners-up, but ended the season on a high by winning the Gosling Cup. Industrial ‘A’ Division runners-up once again in season 1985-86, and defeated finalists in the Gosling Cup of 1988-89 signalled the end of the Club’s 17 year association with the Manchester Amateur League with Mitchells again progressing upwards by joining the Manchester League in 1989. In their second season, the Club was promoted as Runners Up to take their place in the Premier Division for season 1990/91 under the guidance of Paul Traynor and Kenny Davies. In 1993, Mitchells reached the Gilchrist Cup Final, only to lose out to Woodley Sports in the Final. In 1994 Paul Traynor departed due to work commitments and Kenny Davies assumed control, ably assisted by Billy Hall. This management team took Mitchells to their highest ever league position in the Premier Division, runners-up to Abbey Hey in season 1994/95. The Club was rocked prior to the commencement of 1997-98 season when Kenny Davies walked out; taking with him several first team players to a local, at the time rival Club Monton. Dave Rowan and Craig Woodley, who had forged a successful partnership with the reserves, were promoted and asked to rebuild the side. A difficult season was to follow, but after being adrift at the bottom of the Division for most of the season, a dramatic win against fellow strugglers Wythenshawe Town and mid-table Monton Amateurs saw the Club stave of relegation. After such a close call, Mitchells would never go below sixth position in their subsequent seasons i Mitchell Shackleton were proud winners of the Albert Booth Sportsmanship Trophy in 1998-99, a testament to the spirit in which the Club plays the game. In June 2000, Club Secretary Ian Street was named Premier Divison Secretary of the Year at the AGM of the Manchester League. A major change at the Club occurred in 2002 when Mitchells were informed that Salteye Park, their existing ground at Barton was to be purchased and subsequently used for what has now to become the new Salford Reds rugby League stadium. The hunt was on for a new ground, and with compensation from their move, plus football foundation assistance, Silver St in Irlam, once home to Irlam Town became an obvious choice. The start of the 2001-02 season saw the Club change its title to Irlam MS in anticipation of a proposed move to Silver St, the site of the then defunct Irlam Town FC. The new ground at Silver St was officially opened in 2003 with a visit from Brian McClair’s Milk Cup winning, Manchester United youth team. A further name change saw Irlam MS become Irlam FC, and the appointment of Warren Dodd as secretary of the Club, from Irlam Rangers Junior Club saw development increase at the ground. The Club made the decision in 2006 that they would pursue a place in The North West Counties football League, and entry via ground improvements at Silver St meant that the Club entered their highest level of competition in their history in readiness for the 2008/2009 season. That inaugural season, under the guidance of manager Dave Mann was a tremendous success, finishing in 8th position on 52 points in our first campaign. The Clubs performances over following seasons fluctuated in the NWCFL as the Club adjusted to the higher level of competition. Previous managers Dave Mann, Ryan Gilligan and Nick Parker have all poured their effort and commitment into the Club, culminating in the appointment, Steve Nixon, a local manager with an impeccable coaching CV in readiness for season 2014/15 after taking over mid-way through the previous season With manager Steve Nixon at the helm for his 3rd campaign for the 2015/2016 season, the future began to look bright both on and off the pitch at Silver St. The opening of a brand new Clubhouse at the ground again pushed the Club to greater heights, creating a real non-league footballing set up at Silver St. Season 2015/16 season proved to be a watershed moment for the Club. Since joining the league in 2008/2009 the focus has been on youth and development of the ground, and it was 2015/2016 season when all the efforts and sacrifices made came to fruition. Irlam manager Steve Nixon shaped a fantastic group of maturing young players as they put together a magnificent run of results to take second spot and gain automatic promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history. Season 2016/2017 proved to be the most successful in the Clubs long history, an eighth place finish in the Premier Division showed the growing strength of the Club, whilst a treble winning U21’s development side swept all before them in the Cheshire U21’s league. Point deductions for our U18’s were all that stood between them and a possible title win as they finished 4th, just six points adrift of Nelson FC. For season 2017/2018 a restructuring of positions at the Club has seen new faces take control of on the field matters. 1st team manager Steve Nixon and asst Chris Boardman have moved out of the hot seats in order to take over the commercial side of the Club, with Steve Nixon taking over from Ron Parker as chairman of the Club. New manager Michael Dodd, and asst Matty Kay, both part of the 1st team backroom staff last season were chosen to take control for the new campaign. They have assembled a strong backroom staff around them and we wish them well for future campaigns. The 2018/2019 season was arguably the most successful season the Club has embarked upon since its entry into the national league system in 2008/2009. Although league position remarkably remained the same as season 2017/2018 (13th), it was in the national competitions where the young Irlam squad gave a glimpse of things to come in the future. An unprecedented FA Cup, surpassed only by an even greater campaign in the FA Vase, saw the side mentioned in dispatches up and down the country. A three match winning streak in the FA Cup, including a 2-1 victory away at Prescot Cables set the side up for an away trip to Gateshead Club Dunston UTS, a match that saw Irlam’s campaign end with a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of the North East side who would go on to a famous victory over Chester FC in the next round. The FA Vase would capture the imagination of all at the Club as the team confidently pushed into the fifth round of the FA Vase, a five match winning run , beating Clubs from up and down the region as they saw of Burscough , Yorkshire sides Handsworth and Hemsworth, Hull based Winterton and Midlands based Cadbury’s Athletic. The fifth round however would prove to be a bridge too far for IRLAM. Welcoming Surrey based Chertsey Town FC to the Ambitek Stadium, a rearranged fixture after snow put paid to the original date, the Southern based side just had the edge on the day, a 2-0 victory moving the Curfews in to the quarter finals and ultimately into the Final itself where the eventually lifted the Famous Trophy at Wembley Stadium. An excellent season, built on solid foundations gives the Club renewed confidence going into the new season, and with manager Michael Dodd retained with his backroom staff, the omens are good for 2019/2020. Match Info: Barnoldswick Town (H), Tue 2nd Jan, 7:45pm KO
With Christmas and New Year behind us, The Shakers enter 2024 sitting atop the North West Counties Premier Division table after a month that saw Dave McNabb’s men go unbeaten in the league. With the only mark on what would have been a perfect month being our Macron Cup exit to Charnock Richard which saw us fall to a narrow defeat at Gigg Lane. Wins on the road at Longridge and AFC Liverpool, a draw against a plucky Burscough side and a solid home win against promotion chasers Prestwich Heys were enough to make sure we saw the New Year in sitting at number one. We now head into a packed January schedule with seven fixtures on the calendar starting on Tuesday evening at home to Barnoldswick, a team we put to the sword at The Silent Night Stadium in a rip-roaring seven-nil epic. Our visitors sit mid-table in 13th position but have only managed to play 21 league fixtures so far this season and haven’t played in the league since their away trip to the Isle Of Man on the 9th of December after having four consecutive games postponed. Dave McNabb’s men will be keen to capitalise on the momentum of two excellent two-nil wins against Prestwich on Boxing Day and AFC Liverpool on the 30th. Highlights of the AFC Liverpool match as well as Dave McNabbs post match interview can be seen below. In Opposition – Barnoldswick Town Formed in 1972 and named Barnoldswick United(1972) – so-called due to being canny Yorkshiremen- had there been a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would have been liable for them. The field started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch they play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League, in the early 1990’s and they joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. In the late 1990’s they had 3 teams and their 1st & 2nd team teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, our 3rds staying in The East Lancashire League. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United (1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and they changed their name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. It has always been in the club’s constitution to get the ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw them accepted into The North West Counties Football League. Alongside the main pitch they have a floodlit training pitch. Barlicks club house can hold up to 100 people and be hired out for functions. The club’s main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Stadium. In 2009/2010 their first season in The NWCFL saw them finish runners up in Division 1 and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as Town only expected to hold their own and try to make sure they didn’t end up at the bottom of the league. Following on from their success in the 2009/2010 season Barlick went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/2011 to astound themselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league. In March 2012 they achieved The FA Grade E, enabling the club to enter The Evo-Stik League when finishing in a promotion position. The 2012/2013 season saw them finish 9th in the Premier Division and reaching a round further in The FA Vase and the Reserves finishing 4th in their respective league, with players being selected for the first team squad showing strength and depth in the club. The 2013/14 season was a little bit traumatic for the club, players leaving or not being available, unrest in the dressing room which led to poor performances on the field. In June of 2014 the club achieved Charter Standard Development Club at both Senior and Junior level, which was an excellent achievement by both Senior & Junior Committees. The season had ended on a knife edge, if results on the last day of the season had gone a different way we would have been relegated For the 2017/2018 Barnoldswick Town have one team in the Hallmark Security League and one team in The Lancashire Football League Western Division (Galaxy League). The Junior section has 21 teams in The East Lancashire League from U7’s -U18’s, plus one U12’s girls team playing in The West Riding League. They also have a Tiny Town Junior Academy for 4 – 6 year olds. Tickets & Admission General sale tickets are available online HERE, which includes hospitality tickets in the Main Stand. Match Info: AFC Liverpool (A), Sat 30th Dec, 3pm KO
The festive football continues in Merseyside this Saturday, as we head to The Marine Travel Arena to take on AFC Liverpool. The boys got the result an expectant Boxing Day crowd were wanting, by overcoming Prestwich Heys on Tuesday. Two goals from captain Tom Moore sent home the majority of the 4,833 inside Gigg Lane happy with three points as a late Christmas present. Highlights of that victory are available at our YouTube channel below. The win put some breathing space between us and Heys, who sat in third ahead of the game. Wythenshawe Town beating league-leaders Wythenshawe in the big derby game brought the summit into sight again, but brings Town closer to the top too. Every game matters, with points at a premium. AFC Liverpool sit in 19th with 32 points, and two wins in the last six. One of those was against Wythenshawe at the Marine Travel Arena, and are therefore not to be taken lightly. A win takes us top as we head into 2024. Get down to the game, the lads need your support. All your match information is below. This week in ‘Playing Away’ – placing the spotlight on the NWCFL, we caught up with AFC Liverpool stalwart and matchday PA Announcer Alan Harrison, to discuss all things “Affordable Football Club” Liverpool ahead of our clash this weekend. You can watch the episode below. Opponents AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008 by 1,000 Liverpool FC fans who had become increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for Premier League matches. The mooted ‘39th game’, in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world, proved to be the final straw as it clearly highlighted that those who ran top flight football were more concerned with money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008, AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the contentious ownership issue at Anfield or as a protest against Liverpool Football Club. It was a response to issues at the top end of football in general. Originally ground-sharing with Prescot Cables, and accepted into the North West Counties, they won 10 of their opening 11 games, consolidating their position in the league for the first three seasons. AFC Liverpool benefitted from clubs being demoted and expelled from the league in 2011, accepting their position in the Premier Division for the 2011-12 season. They stayed in the First Division North again until 2021, when the results of the two curtailed COVID seasons were used to re-structure the leagues. AFC Liverpool again benefitted from a strong set of results and resumed in the Premier Division from the 2021-22 season. Tickets Advance tickets for this game are now offsale but AFC Liverpool are offering a pay on the gate facility with both cash and card available. Prices are listed below. Adults – £10 Concessions – £5 (Over 65s) Juniors – £5 (Under 18s) Travel & Parking Address: The Marine Travel Arena, College Rd, Liverpool L23 3AS Driving: M57/M58 take the A5036 signposted Bootle & Docks, at the roundabout under the flyover turn right onto the A565 following signs for Crosby and Marine AFC. After passing Tesco Express on the right, turn left at the traffic lights (by Merchants Taylors School) into College Road, ground is approx ½ mile on the left. Nearest Railway: Blundellsands & Crosby (11 minutes walk, 0.6 miles) Nearest Bus Route to Ground: Arriva Bus 53, 54, 63 to Brompton Bus Stop, the nearest bus stop to the ground, located on College Road, Parking Facilities: There is a small car park at the Marine Travel Arena but this is unavailable to the public on match days. Parking is available on the streets around the ground, some of which is Pay and Display. Ground Facilities: The Marine Travel Arena is one of the best maintained grounds in the NWCFL. It boasts a tea bar that serves hot pies and burgers as well as the usual range of hot drinks. The bar in the Graham Lounge is also open on matchdays and both Skysports and BT Sport are available. There is a large covered stand behind the goal, covered standing along one side of the ground and open standing behind the other goal. There are clean and modern men’s and ladies toilets underneath the stand. Match Coverage & Live Stream If you are unable to make the game, we’ll have all the live coverage across our media platforms. Live Stream: For this game, we will have no live stream. Keep up-to-date with all our video content via the club’s YouTube Channel. Jimmy Holmes Joins As Head of Recruitment
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Jimmy Holmes as the club’s new Head of Recruitment. The arrival of Jimmy to a newly-created role is another significant development in implementing a new player recruitment strategy for the club. Having enjoyed previous roles at Manchester City, Morecambe and most recently Macclesfield, Jimmy is vastly experienced and together with his contacts in the game and his track record in recruitment he is a valuable addition as we look to move forward as a club. Working alongside manager Dave McNabb and his management team, Jimmy will oversee the structure for the identification of new players, including a regional and national scouting system. Jimmy admitted that he was excited to be working for such an historic club: “I’m delighted to be here. Bury is a massive club especially for the level that they currently find themselves at. Having spoken to the management and directors over the past few weeks, their vision and plans for the future made this opportunity something I just couldn’t turn down. It’s a similar project to what I took on 2/3 years ago when I was approached by Macclesfield to go in and build them a squad from scratch. With the help of some fantastic people at the club we went on to win back-to-back leagues and that is something that we aim to do again this time for Bury. We’ve got to make sure we get the recruitment right moving forward. Players who can develop, and become sellable assets or move up the leagues with Bury. We were very successful at my previous clubs with this model. I’ll take a look at players who fit the remit of the club and then pass them onto the Manager, who will get the final say. It is, afterall, down to a Manager on team selection so it’s vital that they want that player moving forward.” Welcome to Bury Football Club, Jimmy! #ShakersTogether | #BuryFC | #PartofIt View the full article
