  10. We are pleased to confirm that we have now signed the contract to install a 3G pitch at Gigg Lane this summer. We understand the frustration supporters feel around frequent match postponements due to the poor condition of the grass pitch this season. It is important that we maintain a focus on the long term success of the club. An artificial surface means that we can grow the reach of the club by bringing the wider community into Gigg Lane, make the stadium more financially sustainable, and build a base from which all of our teams can train and play, giving players the consistency and familiarity they need to succeed. Payment will be made in phases as the work progresses. The initial payment will be met by the Society reserves and we will receive matched funding of £300,000 from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. This will utilise the full £1m available from their Community Ownership Fund. We will also draw down funding from Bury Council who are contributing £450,000, as approved by their Cabinet recently. We are finalising a Community Development Plan with Bury Council which will commit us to a programme of work in the borough designed to maximise community usage of the stadium through a diverse number of initiatives, not just football. Our objective for the new season is to retain a strong balance sheet and drive greater revenue through pitch hire, which will be limited to 50 hours per week to protect the surface over the next 8 years. As highlighted in our previous statement, a significant amount of this revenue will be allocated to a sinking fund to replace the pitch when required, be it another artificial surface or a return to grass. At this stage of the season we know there is a focus on results with the ultimate aim of promotion. Football provides us with an opportunity to live in the moment, and we don’t want to dampen the joy that those moments bring to our supporters. Off the pitch, however, we remain relentless in our pursuit of a bigger, longer term objective to maximise the potential of the club in all areas. We also recognise that the grass pitch has a specific place in many supporters’ hearts. Not least those who have the ashes of their loved ones scattered there. With this in mind we would like to confirm the following: We will hold a ceremony at Gigg Lane for anyone who has had the ashes of a the friends or relatives scattered there, to allow them to say a farewell once more. Details of the ceremony will be announced as soon as we have the date. We will sell up to 500 pieces of turf from the Gigg Lane pitch, presented in seed boxes, to raise funds for the club and allow supporters to own a little piece of history. The dimensions will be 344mm x 214mm x 52mm and the first pieces bought will also receive a free copy of James Bentley’s book on Bury Football Club ‘Things Can Only Get Better: Bury’s Mid-90s Rise Under Stan Ternent’. We are grateful to James for this donation. There will also be a raffle for the two penalty spots. Further details will follow. Artificial grass is not as environmentally friendly as real grass. We believe the good we can do throughout the community outweighs the cost overall, but we do recognise our responsibilities to the environment. We are grateful to our shirt sleeve sponsors, Redfox Countryside Services, specialists in ecological management and restoration services, who have offered their services to help develop Starkies Wood, next to Gigg Lane, in a way which will contribute towards eventually making this project carbon neutral. The stadium is one of the oldest in Britain, and it would be wrong to pretend that carbon neutrality is easily achievable, but this is one step in that direction and we are extremely grateful for the thoughtful and unprompted offer of support from Redfox Countryside Services on this matter. It would require Council approval. There is also an early stage idea around a commemorative garden using the centre spot. The sight and smell of a grass pitch is something we all have imprinted in our footballing DNA. Our move to an artificial surface is a rational one, supported by an overwhelming 92% majority of our members. That doesn’t mean we don’t recognise the past and our emotional connection to it through places such as Gigg Lane. We hope this note shows an acknowledgment of that. It is just the start of many ideas and initiatives for the forthcoming months. As always, keep across the latest from the club on the website, X / Twitter & Facebook. 11. We are delighted to confirm the deadline day signings of Aaron Morris and Tanaka Cherera. Defender Morris joins the club from FC United of Manchester. His first taste of non-league football was in for St Helens Town before moving to Runcorn Linnets in 2016 and then FC United, three years later. Aaron was a fans favourite at Linnets as he was awarded the Supporters Club Player of the Year on two occasions. In July 2022, Dave McNabb signed Aaron at Warrington Rylands where he made seven appearances, before returning to FC United where’s he’s not made an appearance this season due to injury. Forward Cherera joins the club from AFC Liverpool. The 19-year-old has made nine appearances for AFC Liverpool, scoring six goals. He can play either out wide or as a striker, who offers pace and an eye for goal. Prior to signing in Crosby, he played for Roma (not the Italian side) & Pex Hill in the Liverpool local leagues. Both signings are subject to NWCFL approval. View the full article

  13. We head into the final five games following an agonising finale to our Good Friday battle with Wythenshawe at Gigg Lane. Saturdays game saw us draw with our promotion rivals after a penalty given in the dying seconds of eight additional added minutes handed Wythenshawe a point and a boost in the race for the title. We now turn to Easter Monday and a trip to Adie Moran park where we will take on playoff chasers Prestwich Heys. Heys have won four of their last six and will be looking to put pressure on fellow playoff contenders Padiham and Chadderton who sit just above them in the Premier Division table. Dave McNabb’s charges will be looking to reverse the trend set in the last four games and get back to winning ways on the road after run which has seen us fall to two defeats and draw tow in our last six. The away allocation for this game is sold out and our volunteers will be on the gates helping scan fans in on the day. We advise fans to please not travel to Adie Moran park without a valid ticket. As always Roch valley Radio will be with us to provide commentary on the day and you will be able to keep up with all the action on our social media pages across the afternoon. Highlights and post match interviews from Gaz Peet and Max Harrop are available below. Last Time Out – Prestwich (h) Opponents – Prestwich Heys The origins of Prestwich Heys AFC can be traced back to 9th February 1938 when a meeting was called at the Music Room of the Heys Road Boys’ School at which Elgar Lumsden put forward the idea of forming an Old Boys’ Association. Despite the onset of the Second World War a year later, the Association flourished under the Chairmanship of Proctor Bell, who also acted as Secretary of the football arm, known as Heys Old Boys AFC, and was acknowledged as one of the region’s best. The team gradually progressed through the Bury Amateur League and in to the South East Lancashire League claiming Championships in 1960, 1961 and 1964. Under the guidance of Peter Gilmore in the sixties, Heys won the prestigious Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1967 followed by the one and only Lancashire Combination Grand Slam in the 1970/71 season with Heys bringing all four trophies available back to Grimshaws. The club also changed its name in 1964 to Prestwich Heys AFC, an acknowledgement of the fame achieved by the club as they proved one of the nation’s top amateur clubs. Thousands flocked to see Heys play, and beat, the likes of Sutton United, Ferryhill Athletic, Finchley and Highgate United in the FA Amateur Cup with the club’s best run taking Hey’s to the last 16. The victory over Sutton United in 1969 ranks as one of Heys most famous moments, attracting nationwide coverage, coming a week before their opponents were due to meet Leeds United in the FA Cup. The above has been taken from the history section of the Prestwich Heys website, read more here. In more recent seasons, Heys re-entered the NWCFL in 2017 (following a stint in the divisions in the early-80s) before gaining promotion to the Premier Division during the covid league re-shuffle in 2021. The side finished 7th last season, and are looking to improve on that this season, comfortably sitting inside the play-off positions going into the festive period. 17. Dave McNabb has added a two players to his squad ahead of the deadline for registering players in the NWCFL, which comes into force after Sunday. We are delighted to announce the additions of Brazilian shot stopper Andre Mendes and experienced defender Joe Maguire. Andre Mendes Brazilian Goalkeeper Andre da Silva Mendes has joined the club from NPL side Lancaster City. The Portuguese shot-stopper spent time on loan at NPL West side Colne before playing 10 games at the end of last season for Ashton United and has appeared 33 times for the Dolly Blues this term. Born in Brazil, Andre moved to Portugal aged six and was part of the Benfica Academy before moving to England aged 13. We asked Dave McNabb about his new signing and he said: “Andre is a young goalkeeper with a fantastic pedigree having previously played at SL Benfica, Morecambe and most recently at Lancaster City. Andre with provide competition in the goalkeeping department as we head into the final few weeks of the season” Joe Maguire We are pleased to announce the signing of defender Joe Maguire. The left sided defender, who was most recently at Tranmere started his career at Liverpool and has also played for Fleetwood, Crawley Town and Accrington Stanley. Speaking about his new recruit, manager Dave McNabb said the following: “Joe is a player I’ve tried to sign a couple of times previously. He has an outstanding pedigree having played for Liverpool first team, Fleetwood, Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers. A very experienced defender who can play centre back or at left back.” Please make sure you give them a proper Bury welcome and get behind Dave and the team as we continue our promotion charge. Both signings are subject to league approval. #BuryFC | #PartOfIt View the full article
  18. We will hold an early pitch inspection on Saturday morning to review the pitch after what we expect will be further spells of rain due across tonight and through Friday. More details are provided below. Following the recent postponements at Gigg Lane of both the initial Wythenshawe fixture (twice), and our game against Ramsbottom United last week (for the third time), the grounds staff started urgent remedial works to the pitch in an attempt to improve its condition. Across several large parts of the playing surface, water has been gathering and not draining owing to an impermeable layer which is preventing passage of surface water. This is impossible to fix without removing the turf. Continuous spells of rain, which we have had for months now, have inevitably left the surface unfit for play. Over the past week, the ground has been dug up in the worst areas and replacement turf has been laid to bring the pitch up to a standard suitable to play the final games of the season. Further heavy downpours since weekend, when the new turf was delivered, have hampered progress. The ground staff have worked around the clock to prepare the pitch in the best way possible. We will have the pitch inspected ahead of Saturday as early as possible to assess if the game can be played, given the continuing bad weather. Tickets for the South Stand and the Main Stand have sold out, and we have taken advance tickets for the Cemetery End off sale as a precaution given the risk of the game not being played. Should the game take place, we can put the tickets back on sale, with cash / card turnstiles also available for supporters looking to pay on the gate. We will update further on this following the results of the inspection. 19. Today marks the deadline for signings for clubs in the Northern Premier League (Steps 3 & 4) before the end of the season. Benito Lowe, Sam Burns and Jordan Butterworth have moved on to gain some much needed game time, ahead of this window closing. Jordan Butterworth Sam Burns Benito Lowe Benito has joined NPL side Stalybridge Celtic on a 28-day loan to get some minutes and regain fitness, joining up with his former manager James Kinsey as Stalybridge continue their push for the NPL playoffs. Forward Sam Burns has joins Warrington Rylands, also of the NPL, and midfielder Jordan Butterworth also joins up with Benito at Stalybridge. Both players will continue to be signed on dual-registration terms. Manager Dave McNabb gave us his thoughts on the players moving on: “Benito is an instrumental player and a big character in the group. Unfortunately, he and us have been frustrated with a number of injuries that prevented his excellent run of form continuing from earlier in the season. “As we head into the final run-in, a number of clubs made contact about Benito who expressed a wish to go and get some consistent game time. The short term move allows Benito to get that game time with the plan that he will return to the club in the summer. We have discussed an outline for Benito in the summer to get him back in peak physical condition to hit the ground running next season.” “Sam is an outstanding young player who dropped into non-league following his release by Blackburn Rovers having played multiple games in League 2 during a loan spell with S¿¿¿¿horpe. Sam has always been clear in his ambition to play full-time football and this opportunity for Sam to play Step 3 football is a huge opportunity for him. I’m sure Sam will help Rylands in their promotion push.” “Jordan has been a very important player for us this season. He has often had to play out of position and has always given his all, every time he’s pulled on a Bury shirt. His attitude and application has been first class. Jordan has moved to Stalybridge in order to play more regularly and wish him well.” We would like to wish all three the best of luck for the remainder of the season. The deadline for signings in the NWCFL is Sunday 31st March, so keep it here for more details as we get them. 20. In an inspiring demonstration of community and charity, fans of Bury Football Club have come together to support an exceptional cause, Team 1C, in memory of Isla Hutton. In this year’s event, led by Ryan Jackson-Fogg and Warren Stone and including many others, the group are embarking on a dual-event fundraiser with high hopes of making a significant contribution to the charity. The fundraising activities will kick off on Easter Monday, 1st April, with a sponsored walk from Gigg Lane to Adie Moran Park, home of Prestwich Heys. All are due to arrive ahead of our game that day. Continuing the momentum, a second event on Saturday 13th April, sees Ryan run all 17.3 miles from Chorley to Gigg Lane for this season’s last home game against Padiham. A shirt auction and raffle will also be taking place, contact Ryan direct to place your bids and buy your raffle tickets HERE. Isla, the daughter of fellow Bury fan and Team1C founding member David Hutton, tragically lost her life in October 2022 to cardiac issues at the age of just six years old. David has since dedicated himself to ensuring his daughter’s legacy endures through the work of Team1C. This charity, which became a registered entity in 2022, operates entirely on the goodwill and effort of volunteers, aiming to support families and children affected by cardiac conditions. Team1C is renowned for its comprehensive support system, collaborating closely with notable children’s hospitals like Alder Hey, Ronald McDonald House, and Whiston Hospital. Their work is vital, offering much-needed support to both parents and children navigating the challenges of cardiac conditions. For those looking to contribute or learn more about the fundraising events and Team1C, your support can make a world of difference. 21. In response to the devastating gas explosion on Nelson Street close to Gigg Lane, FGRS Community Hub is stepping up to bring the community together in support of those impacted. A testament to the resilience and solidarity within our community, a fundraiser has been organised with the goal of offering relief and support to the victims of this unfortunate incident. The main event is scheduled for Sunday 14th April at the Fishpool Liberal Club, an occasion that not only aims to raise funds but also to strengthen community bonds during this difficult time. This gathering is an opportunity for community members to show their support, offer donations, and stand in solidarity with those facing the aftermath of the explosion. The explosion on Nelson St. has left many of our neighbors in dire need of assistance, with damages that go beyond physical property to the very heart of our community. 23. The Shakers will be back in action for the first time in 14 days following our 2 – 2 draw with Charnock Richard behind closed doors at Gigg Lane. We are excited to welcome supporters back into the stadium in time for what is billed to be one of the most crucial games in our promotion bid as we host follow promotion chasers Wythenshawe. A home win would see the two teams go level on points making for an extremely exciting final four weeks of the North West Counties Premier Division campaign. An away win gives the visitors the breathing space they lost at home to Cheadle Town last weekend. Leading with 15 to go, Cheadle smashed two late goals to leave with the points and Wythenshawe suffered their first loss in nine. It really is all to play for this Easter weekend. We look forward to a two new faces joining Dave McNabb’s squad in recent weeks, with right-back Keenan Ferguson joining from Spennymoor and former Shaker Max Harrop, returning to Gigg Lane from Northern Prem Side Avro. The additions add reinforcement as we go into the final six games of the season. Watch the highlights of our last run out and Dave McNabb’s post match reaction below. In Opposition – Wythenshawe Originally founded in 1946 as Wythenshawe Lads’ Club by Reg Gauntlet, a local window cleaner, gathering together a group of kids kicking a ball about in the street. They started playing friendlies, held meetings with parents in a wooden hut in the grounds of Cringlewood House, Yew Tree Lane. They then set up home by hiring a room in an old farmhouse in Daine Avenue, Rackhouse. A couple of years later Noel Timpson, of Timpson Shoes, purchased two ex-WW2 Nissen huts and sited them within the farmhouse grounds. Promotion was gained in May 2018 when the FA allocated the first team to a restructured North West Counties Football League. This meant that the club was competing at semi-professional level for the first time, they finished a creditable fourth in the First Division South in their first season. In 2019 the first team returned to the national stage when they re-entered the FA Vase. The following season 2020-21, they made their debut in the FA Cup, in the Extra Preliminary Round beat Shelley at home 4-2 in a memorable penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in 90 mins, exited in the Preliminary Round v. Trafford at home 1-4. The first full season, 2021-22, following two coronavirus pandemic hit seasons, they reached the NWCFL Division One South play-offs, losing to FC Isle of Man in the semi-finals. They improved on that the following season, 2022-23, arguably the club’s most successful, with a first team double, winning automatic promotion to the Premier Division by becoming champions (their first ever semi-professional title), then adding the First Division Champions Cup. Sacha Lord, co-founder of the music festival Parklife and The Warehouse Project, in April 2023 joined the Board and installed as Chair in June. Barratt, appointed as Chair in 2019, remained on the Board as Vice-Chair. In June 2023, the club changed its name, dropping ‘Amateurs’, becoming Wythenshawe Football Club, with the playing name Wythenshawe. 24. Last month our members voted yellow and navy as the colours for next season’s away kit. We now want you to choose the design. Our current policy is to rotate kits every two years, to reward supporters for buying replica kits and keep them up-to-date for longer. As we started the season with two new kits, home and away, we need to break this rule just once so that home and away kits are changed in alternate years. The current away kit will be kept as a third kit. The vote will allow you to make your selection in order of preference which improves the accuracy of the results. Vote emails will go out to all members over the next few days. If you aren’t a member please sign up on this site asap to get involved.
