We are delighted to announce that Harry Wright has been named NWCFL Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Month for October 2023. Harry made his debut for the club last month, in a 4-0 victory against Wythenshawe Town. The month continued, with a 1-0 victory against Squires Gate and a second consecutive clean sheet for the son of former Manchester City & Ipswich goalkeeper Richard Wright. October concluded with a third consecutive clean sheet and a penalty save for Wright in a tough away test at West Didsbury & Chorlton. His penalty save at 1-0 to Bury (see below), allowed the side to go on and win 3-0 and there for complete the month in style. In the six league games played in October, the Shakers have kept four clean sheets, three of which were kept by Wright. We return to Gigg Lane for the only home game of the month tomorrow night, and we will be conducting our remembrance service ahead of kick-off so please arrive early. Full details on the night’s service, can be found here. We maintained our position at the top of the table following our exploits in the FA Vase over the weekend. Wins for both Wythenshawe and Kendal closed the gap on us below, which means we will need to be back at it following a lacklustre performance in the north-east against Whickham on Saturday. Catch the highlights here and the manager’s thoughts below After a strong start to life in the NWCFL Premier Division following promotion from the Division One North as champions last term, Pilkington have struggled in recent weeks with four losses in five outings. A 4-3 win at the Acroframe Stadium against Skelmersdale being the only victory in that spell, Pilks were defeated by FC Isle of Man in Douglas over the weekend by a single Frank Jones goal. They sit 13th going into the game, on 28 points from 20 games. The full match information pack can be found below. In Opposition – Pilkington The club was established in 1938 and joined both the Liverpool Business Houses League and the St Helens Combination. The name originates from the Pilkington glass factory in St. Helens. They later became members of the Liverpool County Football Combination. In 1980 the club joined Division Two of the Mid-Cheshire League. When Division Two was abolished in 1983, they became part of the league’s single division. The club finished bottom of the league in 1986–87. A new second division of the Mid-Cheshire League was formed in 1987 and Pilkington became members of Division One. However, after finishing bottom of the league in 1988–89 and 1990–91, they were relegated to Division Two. The club were Division Two runners-up in 1997–98, resulting in promotion to Division One. They finished bottom of the division in 1999–2000, but were reprieved from relegation after another team left the league. The following season saw the club win the Liverpool Junior Cup, a trophy the club won again in 2004–05. In 2010–11 Pilkington were runners-up in Division One, missing out on the title on goal difference. The division was renamed the Premier Division in 2014. The club finished bottom of the Premier Division in 2014–15 and were relegated to Division One. They won the league’s Presidents Cup in 2016–17, and after finishing as runners-up in Division One in 2017–18, the club were promoted back to the Premier Division. The following season saw them win the Premier Division title, resulting in promotion to Division One North of the North West Counties League. They were Division One North champions in 2022–23 and were promoted to the Premier Division. The club originally played at Crossley Road, before moving to Ruskin Drive at the beginning of the 1948–49 season. Their home ever since, the complex was redeveloped from 2016 to incorporate an astro-turf pitch amongst additional upgraded facilites to cater for all sports including space for other local football clubs, as well as rugby, cricket and tennis. There is on-street parking in the residential areas surrounding Gigg Lane, with supporters reminded to be respectful and considerate of the local residents at all times, as well as being mindful of and adhering to the parking permit measures in place in close proximity to the ground. Stadium Entry: Gates will open at 6:30pm. Our matchday volunteers will be on hand, both outside the turnstiles and inside the ground, to guide supporters to where they need to be. Sellers accept cash or card, with 40% of the total pot going to the winning ticket with results announced over the PA system and on the scoreboard. Food / Drink: Our new catering partner, Quirky Catering, will be operating the kiosks this weekend and throughout the season, and are accessible for supporters under the stands. A selection of hot and cold snacks will be available. Alcohol will be sold, and can be consumed anywhere in the stand. Please respect the advice from stewards on managing this process on the day. Keep #GiggGleaming: With so much work gone into Gigg Lane to get us to this point, we want to keep it that way and a lot of work goes into turning the ground around between games each weekend. We have a team of volunteers lined up to clean the stands following the game. With this in mind, we urge all supporters to make sure any rubbish is processed in the correct manner, using the available bins where necessary, or if possible please take any rubbish away with you. Designated Smoking Areas: Supporters are not allowed to smoke / vape anywhere within the stands at Gigg Lane. Designated areas are set aside to do this, follow guidance from stewards on this and only smoke / vape within these areas. #NonLeagueDogs: For now, dogs are NOT permitted in the ground. Despite the disappointing postponement of our last fixture, this weekend the team attention turns to the FA Women’s Challenge cup quarter-final. Bury’s last fixture in this competition against Manchester Laces was awarded as a home walkover. Rochdale gained their place in the quarter final by beating Mancunian Unity Reserves 7-0 last month. As for form coming into the game, our last fixture was an emphatic 5-1 win against Blackpool FC in the North West Women’s Regional League, with goals coming from Chloe Greenall, Sinead Nugent, Shelby Wolstencroft and Isobel Dooley. The team look to maintain this momentum and progress further in the Cup. The team look to get back-to-back wins in all competitions and make it through to the semi-final of the FA Womens Challenge cup. Our opposition play in GMWFL, after reforming this season. The Fixture is to be played on Sunday 12th November at 2.30pm, at Manchester College (Openshaw Campus). With another week of heavy rain predicted, forward planning has enabled us to book this 3G pitch to ensure the game is played. This is also where our mens u23s play their fixtures. It is a modern astro facility with a very good viewing platform, so make sure you get down to support the team. Dave McNabb, who is no stranger to FA Vase success after winning it at Wembley with Warrington Rylands back in 2021, won’t be taking the trip lightly as he knows how tough these trips to the North East can be. Dave McNabb and his team will look to make it four wins on the bounce this weekend as we travel North into Cumbria to take on Kendal Town in a top-of-the-table clash. This will be our second meeting with The Mintcakes this season and The Shakers will be looking to avenge a 3-2 loss in the reverse fixture back in August, a game in which Andy Briggs bagged a brace. Briggs was back among the goals last weekend as were Connor Comber and Anton Smith as we put a good West Didsbury & Chorlton side to the sword in a match fraught with action including sin bins, red cards and penalties (both saved and scored) You can see the highlights of that game below. Following this week’s announcement of the points deduction, as well as the opening game of the season against Glossop is to be voided and replayed, it is now more important that ever that you get behind YOUR club. Images courtesy of Jake Horrocks In Opposition – Kendal Town The present Club was originally formed as Netherfield AFC in 1919 when employees at K Shoes Netherfield factory were encouraged to form a football team. They were provided with land near the factory at Parkside and began to compete in local leagues. In 1925 the team achieved its first notable success winning the Westmorland County Cup. The club then played in the local leagues like the North Lancashire and West Lancashire league before the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1945 the club joined the semi-professional ranks becoming a member of the Lancashire Combination League. Two Championship Titles came their way in 1949 and 1965. FA Cup success was quickly becoming a tradition having five appearances in eight years in the 1st Round of the FA Cup with the club’s best run in 1963/64 reaching the 2nd Round against Football League side Chesterfield. In 1968 the club accepted the challenge of becoming a founder member of the Northern Premier League. However, the 1970s were not kind to Netherfield as they languished around the bottom of the Northern Premier League for most of the decade. The Club moved in the North West Counties Division One for four seasons before returning to the Northern Premier League in 1987 for the next 10 years the club’s highest position was fifth in the 1993/94 season. The club changed its name to Netherfield Kendal in 1998 and changed its name to Kendal Town in 2000. In the 2004/05 season, the club lost in the NPL Division One play-off final against AFC Telford. The season after was one of the most successful in the club’s history beating Gresley Rovers in the playoff final and the first ever promotion in the club’s history to the NPL Premier. The club’s best two seasons in the NPL Premier where they secured two playoff places losing both semi-finals each time. In the 2012/13 season the club where relegated back to the NPL Division 1. For the next 10 seasons, the club’s average position was 16th. In that time the club could only manage its highest position of 10th in the 2013/14 season. The 2021/22 season was one of the worst in the club’s history. The club finished on 12 points and finished 19th and were relegated to the North West Counties Premier. 2022-23 saw the club return to the North West Counties league for the first time in over 30 years, the season was a season for the club to Stabilize finishing 12th, the highlight was taking over 100 fans to the Isle of Man and also reaching the Macron Cup semi-final. Tickets – SOLD-OUT Kendal Town processed ticket sales online and these are now all SOLD-OUT. If you do not have a ticket, it is strongly recommended that you do not travel to the game. We were unable to manage the process of distribution of these tickets to season ticket holders / members as we normally do as our hosts managed the ticketing process. We endeavour to manage this process wherever possible, but were unable to do so on this occassion. This facility has limited availability, so arrive early to avoid disappointment. Travelodge at the end of Parkside Road is open to the public and costs around £5. Other public parking can be found in the town centre. When parking locally to the ground, supporters attending the game are requested to be mindful of local residents. Please leave space for residents to access properties at all times. Ground Facilities: There will be a food truck in the club’s car park. People leaving the stadium to access food will be stamped by private security and allowed back in. They will also be serving basic food within the stadium from the hut at the bottom of the ground. Alcohol and soft drinks will be available from the club house. A can bar will be open to the left of the pitch, along with a limited amount of drinks from the hut at the bottom of the ground. Fans can use both cash and card in all areas of the stadium. Dog-friendly stadium. Common sense should be used at all times, as they will be exceptionally busy. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in our appeal to overturn the three point deduction, and £100 fine, for fielding an ineligible player at the start of the season. Glossop North End have also launched their own appeal and as a result we will replay the fixture at a future date to be confirmed, in addition to the three point deduction. The rules do not allow the three points we lose to be awarded to them, so this is their only opportunity to benefit from the situation. We do not intend to charge season ticket holders to attend this rearranged fixture, subject to league approval. Despite another great result on the road this weekend, it was not without problems. Particularly those of anti-social behaviour which the club take very seriously and which all of us need to tackle to make the environment on matchdays welcoming for all. Any observations of disorder of any kind are reported to the league and to the County FA. Such reports will inevitably bring charges against the club for which there is a risk of large financial penalties. Continued indiscretions also risk the club being penalised, the most severe being the playing of games behind closed doors. This would be catastrophic for the club. Whilst many fans see this as just a game of football and a release from the day-to-day stresses of life, the football authorities and the club will not tolerate such behaviour. We have put in place a disciplinary procedure and clear sanctions for any unacceptable behaviour. These are displayed at the turnstiles, alongside the ground regulations. The club will not fail to take action against individuals where necessary. All fans should remember that this is our club and we are judged on the behaviour of even the smallest minority of supporters. Should we wish to continue to grow and at some stage return professional football to the town, we can only do so by removing such behaviour from our matches. Please therefore do not turn a blind eye and bring any reports of disorder to the club’s attention. The best way to do this is by reporting any incidents on the day, at the game, to the stewards in attendance around the ground who can deal with any issues in line with ground regulations. If this is not possible, supporters are requested to contact the club direct via email by clicking below and enclosing any supporting information to assist the club in dealing with the matter. What a way to follow up a bad result: two wins and two clean sheets, in-front of two bumper crowds at Gigg Lane in the past week, which put us clear at the top of the league as we head to another play-off chasing side this Saturday. The Step Places Stadium is the venue for a sell-out clash, as fifth placed West Didsbury & Chorlton welcome the top-of-the-table Shakers to South Manchester. West’s form of two wins in seven league games will no doubt be a concern to manager Chris Rowley, but if the reverse fixture from early September is anything to go by – we are in for some fireworks. Benito Lowe’s return from early season injury was timed perfectly, as he swiveled past his marker with added time almost up to place the ball into the top corner and send the majority of the 3,838 crowd home delighted following a pulsating 4-3 win. The game saw Lowe grab his 11th of the season and become the difference between the two sides. He left the field with strapping on his thigh, and of equal concern to manager Dave McNabb, Andy Scarisbrick left the field hobbling in the second half following a nasty challenge. McNabb hope will pull up in time for the trip to West, otherwise their will no doubt be a scrap for the starting number nine shirt, with Dan Cockerline (right) joining Andy Briggs on the subs bench just before kick-off on Tuesday. Both will be vying to be on the teamsheet come Saturday at 3pm. With a current record of seven wins from the last 10 is impressive, the manager admitted to a questioning of the squad’s mentality at points on Tuesday night. He will be pleased no doubt that whilst struggling at stages against Gate, the side still came away with the win – the sign of a good side in development. Tom Moore has been confirmed as the new club captain of Bury Football Club. Manager Dave McNabb hosted a vote amongst the players and staff, to choose the new captain with Tom selected to lead the team in this new era. Moore joined from Bootle only a matter of weeks ago, but has impressed as a towering presence in defence, as well as showing skills with the ball at his feet. Being able to offer either cross-field diagonals or quick balls into our forwards with precision has formed an important part of the new manager’s tactical plans. Charlie Doyle will be vice-captain with Oliver Jepson as third choice. Senior players, Andy Scarisbrick and Chris Rowney will make up the leadership group of five. The manager gave buryfc.co.uk his thoughts on the decision: “Being a fan-owned club, we see the responsibility placed on the members to chose who they feel is right to lead and represent them. With this in mind, I felt it was right for the players to pick their own leader. A player who would represent them and the football club going forward. “I’m over the moon for Tom who has shown tremendous leadership qualities since coming into the club. He dedicates himself to being the best he can be with his tireless work ethic and commitment.
