  4. Dave McNabb has added a two players to his squad ahead of the deadline for registering players in the NWCFL, which comes into force after Sunday. We are delighted to announce the additions of Brazilian shot stopper Andre Mendes and experienced defender Joe Maguire. Andre Mendes Brazilian Goalkeeper Andre da Silva Mendes has joined the club from NPL side Lancaster City. The Portuguese shot-stopper spent time on loan at NPL West side Colne before playing 10 games at the end of last season for Ashton United and has appeared 33 times for the Dolly Blues this term. Born in Brazil, Andre moved to Portugal aged six and was part of the Benfica Academy before moving to England aged 13. We asked Dave McNabb about his new signing and he said: “Andre is a young goalkeeper with a fantastic pedigree having previously played at SL Benfica, Morecambe and most recently at Lancaster City. Andre with provide competition in the goalkeeping department as we head into the final few weeks of the season” Joe Maguire We are pleased to announce the signing of defender Joe Maguire. The left sided defender, who was most recently at Tranmere started his career at Liverpool and has also played for Fleetwood, Crawley Town and Accrington Stanley. Speaking about his new recruit, manager Dave McNabb said the following: “Joe is a player I’ve tried to sign a couple of times previously. He has an outstanding pedigree having played for Liverpool first team, Fleetwood, Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers. A very experienced defender who can play centre back or at left back.” Please make sure you give them a proper Bury welcome and get behind Dave and the team as we continue our promotion charge. Both signings are subject to league approval. #BuryFC | #PartOfIt View the full article
  5. We will hold an early pitch inspection on Saturday morning to review the pitch after what we expect will be further spells of rain due across tonight and through Friday. More details are provided below. Following the recent postponements at Gigg Lane of both the initial Wythenshawe fixture (twice), and our game against Ramsbottom United last week (for the third time), the grounds staff started urgent remedial works to the pitch in an attempt to improve its condition. Across several large parts of the playing surface, water has been gathering and not draining owing to an impermeable layer which is preventing passage of surface water. This is impossible to fix without removing the turf. Continuous spells of rain, which we have had for months now, have inevitably left the surface unfit for play. Over the past week, the ground has been dug up in the worst areas and replacement turf has been laid to bring the pitch up to a standard suitable to play the final games of the season. Further heavy downpours since weekend, when the new turf was delivered, have hampered progress. The ground staff have worked around the clock to prepare the pitch in the best way possible. We will have the pitch inspected ahead of Saturday as early as possible to assess if the game can be played, given the continuing bad weather. Tickets for the South Stand and the Main Stand have sold out, and we have taken advance tickets for the Cemetery End off sale as a precaution given the risk of the game not being played. Should the game take place, we can put the tickets back on sale, with cash / card turnstiles also available for supporters looking to pay on the gate. We will update further on this following the results of the inspection. 6. Today marks the deadline for signings for clubs in the Northern Premier League (Steps 3 & 4) before the end of the season. Benito Lowe, Sam Burns and Jordan Butterworth have moved on to gain some much needed game time, ahead of this window closing. Jordan Butterworth Sam Burns Benito Lowe Benito has joined NPL side Stalybridge Celtic on a 28-day loan to get some minutes and regain fitness, joining up with his former manager James Kinsey as Stalybridge continue their push for the NPL playoffs. Forward Sam Burns has joins Warrington Rylands, also of the NPL, and midfielder Jordan Butterworth also joins up with Benito at Stalybridge. Both players will continue to be signed on dual-registration terms. Manager Dave McNabb gave us his thoughts on the players moving on: “Benito is an instrumental player and a big character in the group. Unfortunately, he and us have been frustrated with a number of injuries that prevented his excellent run of form continuing from earlier in the season. “As we head into the final run-in, a number of clubs made contact about Benito who expressed a wish to go and get some consistent game time. The short term move allows Benito to get that game time with the plan that he will return to the club in the summer. We have discussed an outline for Benito in the summer to get him back in peak physical condition to hit the ground running next season.” “Sam is an outstanding young player who dropped into non-league following his release by Blackburn Rovers having played multiple games in League 2 during a loan spell with S¿¿¿¿horpe. Sam has always been clear in his ambition to play full-time football and this opportunity for Sam to play Step 3 football is a huge opportunity for him. I’m sure Sam will help Rylands in their promotion push.” “Jordan has been a very important player for us this season. He has often had to play out of position and has always given his all, every time he’s pulled on a Bury shirt. His attitude and application has been first class. Jordan has moved to Stalybridge in order to play more regularly and wish him well.” We would like to wish all three the best of luck for the remainder of the season. The deadline for signings in the NWCFL is Sunday 31st March, so keep it here for more details as we get them. 7. In an inspiring demonstration of community and charity, fans of Bury Football Club have come together to support an exceptional cause, Team 1C, in memory of Isla Hutton. In this year’s event, led by Ryan Jackson-Fogg and Warren Stone and including many others, the group are embarking on a dual-event fundraiser with high hopes of making a significant contribution to the charity. The fundraising activities will kick off on Easter Monday, 1st April, with a sponsored walk from Gigg Lane to Adie Moran Park, home of Prestwich Heys. All are due to arrive ahead of our game that day. Continuing the momentum, a second event on Saturday 13th April, sees Ryan run all 17.3 miles from Chorley to Gigg Lane for this season’s last home game against Padiham. A shirt auction and raffle will also be taking place, contact Ryan direct to place your bids and buy your raffle tickets HERE. Isla, the daughter of fellow Bury fan and Team1C founding member David Hutton, tragically lost her life in October 2022 to cardiac issues at the age of just six years old. David has since dedicated himself to ensuring his daughter’s legacy endures through the work of Team1C. This charity, which became a registered entity in 2022, operates entirely on the goodwill and effort of volunteers, aiming to support families and children affected by cardiac conditions. Team1C is renowned for its comprehensive support system, collaborating closely with notable children’s hospitals like Alder Hey, Ronald McDonald House, and Whiston Hospital. Their work is vital, offering much-needed support to both parents and children navigating the challenges of cardiac conditions. For those looking to contribute or learn more about the fundraising events and Team1C, your support can make a world of difference. Let’s come together to support this incredible cause and make a positive impact in the memory of Isla. Donate HERE View the full article
  8. In response to the devastating gas explosion on Nelson Street close to Gigg Lane, FGRS Community Hub is stepping up to bring the community together in support of those impacted. A testament to the resilience and solidarity within our community, a fundraiser has been organised with the goal of offering relief and support to the victims of this unfortunate incident. The main event is scheduled for Sunday 14th April at the Fishpool Liberal Club, an occasion that not only aims to raise funds but also to strengthen community bonds during this difficult time. This gathering is an opportunity for community members to show their support, offer donations, and stand in solidarity with those facing the aftermath of the explosion. The explosion on Nelson St. has left many of our neighbors in dire need of assistance, with damages that go beyond physical property to the very heart of our community. In these trying times, it’s the collective support and compassion of the community that can make the most significant difference in the lives of those impacted. Understanding the power of collective effort, the FGRS Community Hub has also established a Just Giving page to facilitate donations from those who are unable to attend the event in person but still wish to contribute to the cause – aiming for £3,500. This online fundraising platform allows for easy and secure donations, ensuring that every penny goes directly to aiding the affected residents of Nelson St. Donate here to support the victims of the Nelson St. gas explosion. For more information on the event and how you can help, please visit the FGRS Community Hub’s official channels – HERE. Your support can make a significant difference in providing the much-needed relief and support for our neighbors during this challenging time. View the full article

  10. The Shakers will be back in action for the first time in 14 days following our 2 – 2 draw with Charnock Richard behind closed doors at Gigg Lane. We are excited to welcome supporters back into the stadium in time for what is billed to be one of the most crucial games in our promotion bid as we host follow promotion chasers Wythenshawe. A home win would see the two teams go level on points making for an extremely exciting final four weeks of the North West Counties Premier Division campaign. An away win gives the visitors the breathing space they lost at home to Cheadle Town last weekend. Leading with 15 to go, Cheadle smashed two late goals to leave with the points and Wythenshawe suffered their first loss in nine. It really is all to play for this Easter weekend. We look forward to a two new faces joining Dave McNabb’s squad in recent weeks, with right-back Keenan Ferguson joining from Spennymoor and former Shaker Max Harrop, returning to Gigg Lane from Northern Prem Side Avro. The additions add reinforcement as we go into the final six games of the season. Watch the highlights of our last run out and Dave McNabb’s post match reaction below. In Opposition – Wythenshawe Originally founded in 1946 as Wythenshawe Lads’ Club by Reg Gauntlet, a local window cleaner, gathering together a group of kids kicking a ball about in the street. They started playing friendlies, held meetings with parents in a wooden hut in the grounds of Cringlewood House, Yew Tree Lane. They then set up home by hiring a room in an old farmhouse in Daine Avenue, Rackhouse. A couple of years later Noel Timpson, of Timpson Shoes, purchased two ex-WW2 Nissen huts and sited them within the farmhouse grounds. Promotion was gained in May 2018 when the FA allocated the first team to a restructured North West Counties Football League. This meant that the club was competing at semi-professional level for the first time, they finished a creditable fourth in the First Division South in their first season. In 2019 the first team returned to the national stage when they re-entered the FA Vase. The following season 2020-21, they made their debut in the FA Cup, in the Extra Preliminary Round beat Shelley at home 4-2 in a memorable penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in 90 mins, exited in the Preliminary Round v. Trafford at home 1-4. The first full season, 2021-22, following two coronavirus pandemic hit seasons, they reached the NWCFL Division One South play-offs, losing to FC Isle of Man in the semi-finals. They improved on that the following season, 2022-23, arguably the club’s most successful, with a first team double, winning automatic promotion to the Premier Division by becoming champions (their first ever semi-professional title), then adding the First Division Champions Cup. Sacha Lord, co-founder of the music festival Parklife and The Warehouse Project, in April 2023 joined the Board and installed as Chair in June. Barratt, appointed as Chair in 2019, remained on the Board as Vice-Chair. In June 2023, the club changed its name, dropping ‘Amateurs’, becoming Wythenshawe Football Club, with the playing name Wythenshawe. 11. Last month our members voted yellow and navy as the colours for next season’s away kit. We now want you to choose the design. Our current policy is to rotate kits every two years, to reward supporters for buying replica kits and keep them up-to-date for longer. As we started the season with two new kits, home and away, we need to break this rule just once so that home and away kits are changed in alternate years. The current away kit will be kept as a third kit. The vote will allow you to make your selection in order of preference which improves the accuracy of the results. Vote emails will go out to all members over the next few days. If you aren’t a member please sign up on this site asap to get involved. 12. Women’s First Team player, Jasmine Dawkes Bury Football Club is proud to support this initiative, along with our friends at the FGRS Community Hub to help grassroots and school sports. We will be collecting pre loved football boots, trainers and astro boots in useable condition at our home game against AFC Liverpool on Saturday 6th April. These will then be distributed to local schools and grass roots clubs for children and families who need them. If you are unable to bring them to the game, the FGRS Community Hub (also based at Gigg Lane) will be collecting donations from the 8th April until Friday 19th April. The Hub’s opening hours are Monday 12.30-2.30pm, and Wednesday and Friday 9.30am-2.30pm. Members of the Men’s Recreational Side Your preloved boots and trainers could make a huge difference to children and young people as they are often a big expense to families. Both Bury FC and FGRS Community Hub firmly believe that nobody should be prevented from taking part in sport for want of the right footwear. It also helps us do our bit for the environment by keeping the boots out of landfill when they could be out to good use. Our squads across the whole club have been taking part by enthusiastically collecting with the Men’s and Women’s First Teams, Under 23s, Women’s Reserves, Women’s and Men’s Recreational and Development, Futsol and U12s all organising their own collections. Boys U12s Men’s First Team Women’s Futsal Women’s Recreational Women’s First Team Men’s U23s A real club and community effort! 17. We have set in motion the process to refund single tickets bought for the games played behind closed doors, as we have an existing process via our ticketing company for this. Season tickets do not have an equivalent process. Unfortunately, on a practical level it is impossible for us to offer a straight forward refund for season ticket holders. It would require us to gather and hold everyone’s bank details and take many months to process, as we do not hold bank or card details for supporters. We don’t have the resources to pay refunds promptly, and it poses a security risk if we hold bank details for a significant period of time. This is another reason why we would have preferred a fine, rather than a stadium closure. For this reason our preferred options are: A large number of supporters have told us they want us to keep the money. We are obviously grateful for this and hope the ability to live stream both games behind closed doors offered some value in return. We have also been asked about donations to compensate for loss of revenue. We would prefer supporters to waive form of credit than donate money at this stage. There is a possibility we may need to navigate our way through the play-offs. This would give us at least one additional home game and maybe other tickets which we could add into the season ticket in lieu of the games missed. If the above options are not taken, we will offer a ‘gift card’ which supporters can use to offset the cost of next season ticket or against any other single tickets including friendlies and cup games. This also allows us to spread the financial burden over a number of months, and we are able to administer it, as it offers credit and doesn’t require a bank transfer. We appreciate some supporters may prefer a straight forward refund but on a practical level we cannot manage this process en masse. Clearly the options above require an assessment of the situation at the end of the season, so are not immediate. We have a member vote coming soon on the away kit design for next season and will include an advisory vote on this matter to allow members to approve or reject the broad policy stated above. Thank you for your continued support. Neil Sears General Manager & CEO View the full article
  18. The Gigg Lane pitch today We are sad to report that following heavy down pours overnight, our game with Ramsbottom United due to take place this evening, has once again succumbed to the weather. A local referee was called in this afternoon when concerns were raised about the surface when reviewed this morning, despite clearer weather forecast. It has been no secret that the pitch at Gigg Lane has suffered considerably through the wet winter period. There have been regular postponements within this time, with water often sat on the surface and the pitch struggling to drain without the benefit of a long period to dry out. The effort to get games on has been considerable, with ground staff working up against it on many occassions. Playing two home games over the last Tuesday and Saturday, has led to significant deterioration. The rain falling during the game on Saturday, as well as the significant down pours overnight have left the surface unplayable. Works to improve the surface between now and our next game on Easter Saturday are ongoing. We are all praying for less rain at the same time! Another new date for this fixture will be confirmed in due course, and tickets will be valid for the rearranged fixture. View the full article
  19. As we head into the final few games of the season Dave McNabb has added two players to bolster his squad in the push for promotion. Max Harrop Firstly we would like to welcome back to Gigg Lane, midfielder Max Harrop, who signs from Avro. Max Harrop is a name that will be familiar to Shakers fans as he played in the Bury Youth system going on to make first-team appearances in the Football League between 2010 – 2013. Max has gone on to play at several clubs around non-league spending a considerable spell at Altrincham in the National League. Max will no doubt add another level of technical skill and ability to Dave McNabb’s midfield. Keenan Ferguson The talented 22-year-old spent time in the Academies at Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur in his younger days before joining Boston after starring during a pre-season trial in 2021, he moved on to Spennymoor in June of 2023. Ferguson went on to become a mainstay in The Pilgrims’ line-up during his debut campaign, operating on the right and the left as they made it to the National League North Promotion Final. A hard-working defender with the ability to get forward and supply crosses into the box, Ferguson will no doubt be a great addition down the right. We hope that you will give them both a massive Bury welcome. The signings are subject to league approval and we hope to have them available to face Ramsbottom as we continue our push for promotion. We would like to thank both of the player’s former clubs for assisting in getting the signings over the line. On another note, we say goodbye to Harry Brockbank who departs back to Radcliffe, following the end of his 28-day loan. We thank Harry for all his efforts whilst turning out for the Shakers. #BuryFC | #PartOfIt View the full article

  22. We go again! And we try again, for the third time in fact, as we have the visit of Ramsbottom United this Tuesday under the Gigg Lane lights. Dave McNabb’s squad will be keen to put matters right after a disappointing week which only yielded a single point from our three games, and set us up against it in the battle for top spot. But battle they must, and with fans returning to the stands, the players won’t be short of encouragement following the frustration of having to miss out on two big games on the run-in. Dec Daniels hobbled off and will be a doubt for this Bury derby game, but the return of Andy Briggs as a second half substitute this weekend would have brought smiles to the Shakers faithful. The manager mentioned Briggs’ impact in his post-match interview, available below. You can also catch up with our first competitive match-up with the Rams earlier this season, with our highlights of the penalty win in the Macron Cup also below. Post-Match with Dave McNabb Last Time Out – Ramsbottom United (a) For all the details of this big local derby as we finally meet in the league, can be found below in the full match information pack. Head down for opposition details, tickets, parking and live match coverage. In Opposition – Ramsbottom United Beginning life in 1966, Ramsbottom United began life as a local amateur side building a junior setup that remains an integral part of the club over 50 years later. You can’t say Ramsbottom United without immediately thinking of current (and forever!) Chairman Harry Williams. Involved from the start, you can still find Harry behind the scenes on a matchday, whether it be in the ticket booth, or dishing out pies in the food hut. A stalwart of the club and ex-manager of the first team (1966-1985), who’s name adorns the stadium that the Rams have been based at since 1980. We continue to wish him well after a recent fall has meant some time in recovery. We certainly hope he is well enough to visit Gigg Lane for this special local fixture. Following success in both Bury Amateur and Bolton Combination leagues through the late 60s and 70s, the club made the step up into the Manchester League in 1989 before applying to join the NWCFL in the mid-90s. The ground received its grading, with the club gaining promotion from Division Two in 1997, at the same point as they acquired floodlights from local rugby side, Oldham Rugby League Club. The Rams remained competitive until tradegy struck in 2001 when manager of the time, Ken Bridge, collapsed and died following a game against Cheadle Town. This stunted some of the club’s progress, before in 2009, Harry handed the reins to players at the time – Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson, for their first tilt at management. They made their name in fine style, earning promotion for the first time to the NPL in 2012. Further progression and development of both the ground and playing squad occurred and after just two seasons at the elevated level, they achieved a further promotion following a play-off campaign which first overcame favourites Darlington and then Bamber Bridge to reach the third tier for the first time. Bernard and Jonno left for the ‘Class of ’92’ and Salford City later that year, sending the club in a spin which they were unable to turn around until ex-player Chris Wilcox was appointed in October 2018. An FA Trophy run into the last-16, defeated only by high-flying AFC Fylde, was a highlight for the Willcock’s tenure which without the onset of Covid-19 would no doubt have earned the club a further promotion in that period. Willcock moved on in 2021 to Workington and the club’s results faltered afterwards, with Lee Donafee struggling to maintain a position in the top half of the league and being replaced, with incumbant David Chadwick unable to keep the Rams in the NPL, with the side slipping back into the NWCFL last summer. Former Northwich Victoria manager Steve Wilkes took over the reins for this season, and has the team sat in 18th, with 11 wins and 8 draws from 35 games so far. They have struggled of late, with a single point in the last five games coming courtesy of a 3-3 draw on Saturday away at Burscough. However, it was a game that they were leading 3-0 at the break. 23. We’re back at Gigg Lane on Saturday, but again not as we know it, for an early Saturday clash against Charnock Richard. This game will once again be played out in front of empty stands at Gigg Lane as the second game of our stadium bans comes into force this week after the appeal against the sanctions, was rejected earlier this month. Dave McNabb and his team will be looking to get back to winning ways after our last outing in which we fell to a second defeat in a row to Barnoldswick. Despite having over 70% of the possession, and shots on target being in double digits, The Shakers failed to capitalise on a late onslaught of Barlick’s goal with the visitors managing to find the net twice, leaving Gigg Lane with all three points and inflict the first home league loss under McNabb’s tenure. With Charnock have seemingly been a bit of a bogey team for The Shakers this season. After we led twice in away fixtures in the league and FA Cup, we only gained a point following a late equaliser, and worst still a last minute winner knocked us out of the cup. Compound this with being beaten at Gigg Lane in the Macron Cup 1-0, the team will be focused on a big performance and getting back to the form that saw us go unbeaten in the league between December and March. We are once again gutted that you can’t be with us again for this fixture but know that you will be with us in spirit! Wherever you are we ask you to show your support and tag us in your #ShakersSelfies across social media! Post-Match: Dave McNabb Last Time Out – Charnock Richard (A) In Opposition – Charnock Richard In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. Charnock progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season and won promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCL in the first season when finishing runners up in Division 1. In the 21-22 season the club won the North West Counties League, League Challenge Cup. Last season, Charnock finished 11th in NWCFL Premier Division. They currently sit in 9th, with 14 wins and 11 draws from only 31 games played so far. They recorded an emphatic 6-1 win against Squires Gate last weekend, before a draw in mid-week against West Didsbury. 24. We are sad to report the passing of long-time Bury fan, Kenny Hindle. Following the club for over 70 years, Kenny became synonymous with the club's plight in 2019. We are so glad he saw his beloved Bury back at Gigg Lane. Once A Shaker, Always A Shaker. RIP Kenny pic.twitter.com/CaA1vewzcc — Bury Football Club (@buryfcofficial) March 4, 2024 Last week, the club were sad to bring news of the passing of long-term supporter Kenny Hindle. Over 70 years a follower of Bury Football Club and a familiar figure in the stands to many. Kenny was like all of us back in 2019. Heart-broken. And at a loss as to how to move forward with such a big piece of his life being taken away. His comments to media outlets that visited Gigg Lane at the time, resonated with the wider public who had been drawn to the subject of the club’s battle for survival. Such was his link to the situation, he was chosen to lead out the team’s of Bury FC Legends to raptourous applause at a charity fixture in October 2019. He was back at Gigg Lane for the early stages of this campaign as football returned after a four-season hiatus. We were all delighted that he was able to re-take his seat and watch the football team that had been a mainstay of his life. The club will be holding a minutes applause at our game against Ramsbottom United, on Tuesday 19th March. Kenny’s funeral will take place on Monday 18th March. The funeral cortege will stop at Gigg Lane from 10am on the way to Radcliffe Crematorium, for anyone wishing to pay their respects. Full details on the service can be found HERE. Supporters are advised that only family flowers have been requested and anyone wishing to make donations can do so to Bury Hospice at the below link. Bury Hospice Donations View the full article
