Former Bury defender Joe Skarz will be a part of the Golcar United squad that visits Gigg Lane on Saturday, he’s been a player-coach at the club since 2020. The West Yorkshire-based club play their football in the Northern Counties East Football League, the NWCFL equivalent in that region. It will be their second season in that division after being promoted from the Counties in 2022. In Opposition – Golcar United Founded in 1904, the club initially played in the Huddersfield & District League. They joined the West Riding County Amateur League in 1934 and were runners-up in their first season in the league. After finishing bottom of the table in 1937–38, the club left the league. Golcar won the West Riding County Challenge Cup in 2000–01 and were Premier Division runners-up in 2003–04. The following season saw them win the West Riding County Amateur League title. They were runners-up in 2014–15, and champions in 2017–18. They retained the league title the following season and were promoted to Division One North of the North West Counties League. In 2021–22 they finished third in the league, qualifying for the promotion play-offs. After beating AFC Blackpool 4–2 on penalties in the semi-finals (after a 2–2 draw), they defeated Holker Old Boys 2–1 in the final to earn promotion to the Premier Division. With 10 days to go until the season begins, we can confirm our full fixture list for the 2023/24 season. The first month’s fixtures were published at the start of July, which sees us host Glossop North End on the season’s opening day (29th July). August sees us take on Colne (A), Wythenshawe Town (A), Chadderton (H), Padiham (A), Kendal Town (H), Cheadle Town (H) & Charnock Richard (A) on Bank Holiday Monday. September begins with us hosting West Didsbury & Chorlton before a midweek trip to Wythenshawe. We then host Longridge Town before back-to-back away fixtures at Lower Breck & Squires Gate. Our first fixture against near-neighbours Ramsbottom United is on December 9th at Gigg Lane. Over the festive period, we host Prestwich Heys on Boxing Day before a trip to AFC Liverpool on December 30th. 2024 begins at home to Irlam on January 6th. February 17th 2024 is the date everyone is looking for when we hop over the Irish Sea to take on FC Isle of Man. We have just one fixture over the Easter Weekend, away at Prestwich Heys on Easter Monday (1st April 2024). Our final three fixtures see us host AFC Liverpool on April 6th and Padiham 13th April, before a trip to Ramsbottom United on April 20th to complete the season. Andy Welsh’s side come into Tuesday’s game against Stockport Town, off the back of a 5-2 loss away at Macclesfield on Saturday. Benito Lowe was on the scoresheet once again in the first half whilst Dan Lafferty scored in the second half. Saturday was another opportunity for Welsh and his coaches to assess trialists ahead of the league campaign beginning in less than two weeks’ time. In Opposition – Stockport Town Tuesday’s visitors play their football in the NWCFL Division One South and could have been playing alongside the Shakers in the Premier Division, they fell one point short of the league leaders Wythenshawe FC. They were beaten by-eventual play off final winners Cheadle Town in the semi-final 2-0. The club have been in the Counties since the 2015/16 season, a year after they were founded. Manager Paul Turnbull came through the ranks at Stockport County before moving to Macclesfield, Barrow & Chester before he returned to Edgeley Park in 2018. Saturday sees us make the trip to Macclesfield for our 6th fixture of pre-season, and we have some silverware on the line! It’s the inaugural edition of the Reborn Cup, bringing together two historic clubs, each with their own rich heritage and passionate fanbase. The Reborn Cup marks a significant moment in the revival of both clubs, symbolizing their resurgence after facing challenges in recent years. It represents a celebration of their enduring spirit and determination to reclaim their places in the footballing world. Looking back to Tuesday it was another good test for Andy Welsh’s side against 1874 Northwich. Sajjad Elhassan opened the scoring, with the first Men’s goal at Gigg Lane since 4th May 2019. Benito Lowe, Sam Unwin and Connor Comber were also on the scoresheet. In Opposition – Macclesfield Macclesfield will be looking for another successful season on the pitch, after claiming back-to-back promotions over the last two seasons. Mark Duffy will be taking charge of the Silkmen for the first time this season, he took the job back in May after former Bury midfielder Neil Danns left the Head Coach position to take up an opportunity at Tranmere Rovers. Duffy was Assistant Head Coach to Danns last season. Duffy has been busy in the transfer market so far this summer, retaining key players like top scorer James Berry and bringing in goalkeeper Max Johnstone & defender Sam Heathcote to name a couple. They have played one pre-season fixture so far, it was a 1-0 defeat against The New Saints at the Leasing.com stadium last Saturday. Bury Football Club are delighted to confirm that Jason Jarrett has been appointed manager of our Women’s first team. Jarrett was appointed interim manager last month but has now taken the role on a permanent basis. Speaking to buryfc.co.uk about the appointment he said: “It was quite an easy decision. I thought I would give myself a bit of time to think about it because it’s a big commitment, but just being in and around the girls and working with Gaz & Dave who are going to be my assistants and working with Casey as well it just felt right. I’m really excited to get going. Dave Heaney & Gary Pratt will join Jason’s coaching staff as his assistant managers, with Kelly Boag continuing in her role as goalkeeper coach. Dave had a brief spell as a youth player at Bury in the early 1990s and featured in a fixture against Manchester City. He’s also been involved in local grassroots football in Bury over the last 30 years as a player, coach, manager & chairman. Gary played alongside Jason during his grassroots football days at Roach Dynamos Juniors and is a lifelong Bury fan. He’s been involved in the Women’s game for the last eight years with Manchester Football Dreams in which he’s seen treble-winning success last season. Both Dave and Gary are excited to get started. “We’re both proud and super excited to get the opportunity to work alongside local Bury legend Jason Jarrett and hopefully together we can help Bury FC Women continue with their success.” Head of Women’s Football, Casey Lynchey added: “We have a really strong management team in place, who are already making an impact with the team. “We know this season is going to be more challenging than the previous two, but we have a strong team to further build upon and we have had some really exciting trialists down in pre-season too. After a busy weekend with friendlies against Bradford City & Preston North End, we’ll do it all again tomorrow evening as we welcome 1874 Northwich to Gigg Lane. It was the first time we’ve seen Men’s football at Gigg Lane in over four years on Saturday, as Mark Hughes’ Bradford City won by six goals to nil, but the result wasn’t the important part it was that football was back! Sunday saw us welcome back a Bury legend Ryan Lowe, as he brought a youthful Preston side to face Andy Welsh’s side. There was more in the way of goal opportunities for our forward line, but North End went away with a 2-0 victory. Returning to their home ground of Gigg Lane after a four-year hiatus, Bury FC faced a tough test against Mark Hughes' Bantams. The match kicked off the 2023/24 pre-season campaign but ended in a difficult 6-0 defeat for the hosts. From the start, Bury faced an uphill battle. Emmanuel Osadebe's incisive run and assist to Alex Pattison for the first goal just seven minutes into the game set the tone for the encounter. Bury's defensive solidity was further tested when Andy Cook, last season's top scorer, doubled the visitors' lead five minutes later. Despite an early onslaught, the Shakers showed resilience. A disallowed goal for Tyler Smith due to a foul brought a brief respite for the hosts, only for City to find the net twice more before half time, with goals from Osadebe and Luke Ridehalgh. Bury displayed flashes of attacking threat with a promising move that resulted in the ball being in the back of the net, but their joy was short-lived as the offside flag was raised against Benito Lowe, denying what would have been a moral-boosting goal. After the break, Hughes' side continued their offensive as Bury faced a refreshed City XI. The Shakers' defense was breached again by Matt Derbyshire, bringing the scoreline to 5-0. Despite this, Bury didn't relent. They nearly rewarded their home fans with a goal, only to be denied by a smart save from City's Heath Richardson. The final nail came in the form of Jamie Walker's goal, rounding off a tough day for the hosts. Although the result was far from ideal, Bury FC took away valuable lessons from this match and the return to Gigg Lane marked a significant milestone in the club's history, offering a stepping stone towards regrouping and focusing on the rest of the pre-season campaign.

The visiting team demonstrated their individual prowess early on, as Taylor broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, weaving his way through the Bury defence before slotting home. Skipper Leigh echoed this sentiment as he added to the tally early in the second half. Nelson concluded the Preston onslaught in the 72nd minute, signifying a solid performance by the young Preston outfit. Despite the result, the atmosphere at Gigg Lane was buoyant, as the hosts marked their weekend with festivities to commemorate their return to their home ground after a four-year absence. Facing a Preston team filled with upcoming professionals and scholars, directed by ex-Bury player and manager Ryan Lowe, the Shakers demonstrated promising moments. Mikey O’Neill kicked off proceedings in the 15th minute with an ambitious effort from the edge of the box that soared over the bar. Bury FC's Jacob Slater produced a crucial intervention a few minutes later, denying Tom Kilifin’s cross from reaching Andy Briggs, who otherwise would have had a clear chance on goal. The Shakers came close again at the 20-minute mark, when Sam Unwin's powerful strike skimmed off the crossbar into the spectators behind the goal. Preston managed to seize the advantage, as Taylor danced through the Bury backline, firing the visitors into the lead. Bury FC’s James Pradic made two noteworthy saves in quick succession towards the end of the first half, denying both Jack Tinning’s free-kick and a quick shot from Briggs. Felipe Rodriguez-Gentile, a key player in the early exchanges of the second half, set up Kitt Nelson whose shot missed the target, before his own effort was saved. The visitors added a second goal as Leigh navigated his way through Bury's defensive line and clinically finished in the 54th minute. Nelson added a third for the visitors in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on Kaedyn Kamara's excellent work on the left flank, spinning and slotting past the Bury keeper. Kamara's attempt at a spectacular long-range goal was thwarted by Jack Atkinson's diving save to his left. Late in the game, Connor Comber tested Pradic as the rain began to pour at Gigg Lane, but the Preston shot-stopper ensured his side maintained a clean sheet.

Bury Football Club is run by volunteers and owned by its supporters. Even if you aren’t one of the many volunteers who are assisting with our matchday operations this weekend, you can play a part in its success. Here are just a few things that you can do which make more of a difference than you might realise. 1. Don’t turn up if you don’t have a ticket. Both games are ticket only. Bradford is already sold out. Nobody will be admitted without a ticket and we are under some extremely strict rules to enforce this for these fixtures. 2. Park considerately. The car park in front of the stadium is not available this weekend for supporter use, other than for people with blue disability badges. Volunteers will be helping manage the car park. Off street parking is available but be mindful or the streets closest to Gigg Lane which have parking restrictions on a matchday, and be considerate to residents when you park in residential areas. 3. Go to the right turnstile. Home supporters will be in the South Stand and away supporters in the East Stand (as below). Please look out for signs and volunteers who are there to help to ensure you go to the right place and help anyone struggling. 4. Have your ticket ready showing the QR code. You can present your QR code on your mobile phone or print it off at home, both will work as long as it is clear. You can only use it once on the day so if you share it with someone else who goes in first it won’t allow you in. 5. Behave responsibly. Despite being a friendly, this is a high profile game with a significant security presence. Help us succeed by following the rules around alcohol consumption, be patient with volunteers and stewards and don’t engage in anti-social behaviour described below. 6. Don’t litter. Every piece of litter needs to be cleaned up afterwards. If you leave litter behind that means extra work for a volunteer. Please use the bins provided or even better take your litter home with you so others don’t have to. 7. Help if you can. You will see people staying behind after each game to work on the stadium. Join in if you can. Even five minutes spent cleaning the area around where you sit makes a difference. There are still tickets for Sunday’s game against Preston North End, get yours HERE! Spectator Management Whilst these games are both friendlies, more stringent rules for spectator management will apply as our opponents are EFL teams. This means that alcohol cannot be served or consumed in view of the pitch and the police will be in attendance. We will have enhanced stewarding on the day which will hopefully support us in delivering a safe environment. We hope to be able to relax these requirements for the three remaining home friendlies against non-league opposition, and open up more of the ground for the start of the season proper. However we need your support and co-operation to do this. We are required to demonstrate that we are able to safely and competently run matches out of Gigg Lane to open up more of the ground increase our capacity. Please help us achieve this over the next few weeks. So, this is it. Gigg Lane. Back from it’s slumber and ready to stage men’s footballing contests again after a four-year hiatus. A lot can, and has, been said about the situation Bury fans found themselves in the summer of 2019, when the home of football in this great town was left dormant and silent. Fingers were pointed, blame was apportioned and tears were shed. Lots of tears were shed. Blood, sweat and even more of those tears have led us back home and just in time for the start of the 2023-24 season. And aren’t we just pleased as punch to be able to shout that from the top of the Lenny Johnrose Stand this weekend, as we welcome some familiar names to help us pick up where we left off. First up, the Bantams of Bradford City hop down the M62 this Saturday to be the first side to take to the Gigg Lane turf as we continue our pre-season schedule which is already two-games old. Mark Hughes (pictured left) brings his League Two play-off semi-final side from last season, down to Gigg and such has been the anticipation within the fan base, all of the 2,275 available tickets (reduced capacity) have been snapped up well ahead of game day. Then, within 24 hours, the lads return to the field to take on Ryan Lowe’s Preston North End who tip into town on Sunday and complete an EFL double-header which will really celebrate our return home after such a long-time away. Lowe (15), seals promotion to League One at Chesterfield in 2011 ‘Lowey’ is no stranger to the Bury faithful, having played over 160 games in three spells for the Shakers, scoring 66 goals along the way and securing three promotions for the club. Twice as a player in 2011 and 2015, before seizing the helm as manager permanently in 2018 and guiding the club back into League One at the first attempt during the ill-fated 2018-19 season. A 1-1 draw at home to Port Vale in May 2019 led to celebrations on the pitch, but desolation for the fans across the remainder of the summer and ultimately expulsion and an exodus of players, as the entire squad left for pastures new when promises for the new season could not be fulfiled. Lowe has forged a successful managerial career since, at first Plymouth Argyle with another promotion in his first season, and now in the Championship at Deepdale where he has been at the helm since December 2021. We wish to place on record our thanks to both clubs for including us as part of their pre-season schedule and being accommodating in staging such a special set of fixtures as our first games back at Gigg Lane. Andy Welsh’s side have shown promising signs in the first two pre-season encounters, away at Thackley last Saturday winning 3-0 and taking the lead twice at Ewan Fields on Tuesday night before sharing the spoils against Northern Premier League side, Hyde United. Bury fans are becoming accustomed to another ‘Lowe’ of their own, with former-Wythenshawe Town forward Benito Lowe breaking his Bury duck on Tuesday night when he slotted home coolly from close range midway through the first-half. This was after striking both post and bar during the early exchanges. Former Bury player & manager Ryan Lowe will bring his North End side to Gigg on Sunday, for their second pre-season game on British soil after they beat Bamber Bridge 7-0 on July 1st. His side finished 12th in the Championship last season, despite only being six points off the play-offs. December 2012 was the last time PNE travelled to Gigg Lane for an EFL Trophy tie, in which they won 5-4 on penalties after it was level at 3-3 after 90 minutes. The session will take place on Thursday 13th July at Gigg Lane, doors will open from 6pm, with the session taking place from 6:30pm on the pitch, with the session due to last for approximately an hour. We can confirm that the FCA have approved the amalgamation of the two Community Benefit Societies and the process will now begin to elect a new board to run the Football Supporters’ Society of Bury. The timescale for nominations and voting will be issued soon, but we expect the process to conclude and a new board to be in place at some point in August. A formal calling notice for the Special General Meeting to announce the results will be issued with the nomination forms. Voting will all take place electronically as the new society is permitted to use electronic voting. Anyone considering putting their name forward for the board elections should read the election policy, code of conduct for board members and conflict of interests policy. They will need to have been a member of either Bury FC Supporters’ Society or Shakers Community Society for the past six months. They will be required to agree to the board conduct policy and undertake DBS checks if elected, and will not take their position if they fail abide by these requirements. These can be viewed below. We are pleased to announce our initial batch of North West Counties Football League (NWCFL) Premier Division fixtures for the 2023-24 season. Today’s release covers the first month of the season, with the full fixture list to follow once the Northern Premier League have announced their fixtures, to allow for ground-sharing teams to avoid clashes. In the opening four weeks of the season, we face nine games with a possible tenth should we progress in the FA Cup. Our season begins at home against recently relegated Glossop North end on Saturday 29th July, before a midweek fixture away at Colne. The following weekend, Saturday 5th August will see us take part in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup, the draw for which is expected on Friday (7th July). After the FA Cup, we’ll be travelling to last year’s promotion rivals Wythenshawe Town at Ericstan Park, where Benito Lowe & Darius Palma will face their former club. We are back at Gigg Lane on Saturday 12th August, as we host newly promoted Chadderton, and then on Tuesday 15th August we make the trip up the M66 to face Padiham. The weekend of the 19th September is currently free for the Shakers as it’s the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. A win on the 5th would see us land a fixture on this date. Our first-midweek fixture at Gigg Lane will be on Tuesday 22nd August as we host Tom Kilifin’s former side Kendal Town. Due to a bye in the FA Vase, we see ourselves in league action against Cheadle Town on Saturday 26th August at Gigg Lane. Andy Welsh’s side come into Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly at Hyde United, off the back of a 3-0 win against Thackley on Saturday afternoon. He named two separate elevens in the first & second halves yesterday to build up the player’s match minutes before the league campaign starts on July 29th. Lewis Gilboy opened the scoring before half-time, whilst Sajjad Elhassan bagged a second-half brace. In Opposition Northern Premier League side Hyde United are our second pre-season opponent ahead of the 2023/24 season. They finished just outside the playoffs in the Premier Division, missing out by just two points. The team are managed by the former Bolton & Leigh RMI player Nick Spooner, he was appointed in February 2022 after the departure of Jim Gannon. Ewen Fields has been the home of Hyde United for over 100 years and previously hosted Manchester City EDS fixtures. The stadium holds up to 4,250 spectators – 530 seated – in 5 covered stands, all of which are covered and raised, offering excellent views of the pitch. Club History Hyde FC will always be remembered for the record 26-0 FA Cup defeat suffered at the hands of Preston North End in 1887. But the club, founded two years earlier, was anything but a collection of cotton-town bumpkins. It was a highly ambitious outfit which wanted to compete with the best sides in the North. In the 1887-88 season, Hyde had a successful run and even played a match against Newton Heath (now Manchester United) dubbed the unofficial championship of Manchester. During the early 20th century, Hyde experienced a productive period, winning four league titles. They merged with Hyde St George’s and moved to Ewen Fields in 1906, joining the Lancashire Combination. However, in 1917, the club folded temporarily due to war-related reasons but was re-established in 1919 as Hyde United. The inter-war years were a successful period, with Hyde winning five Manchester League championships in the 1920s. This led to their election to the Cheshire County League in 1930, and they lifted the league cup by defeating Stockport County Reserves in 1934. In 1945-46, Hyde won the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time and reached round one of the FA Cup in 1954. In the following years, they clinched back-to-back Cheshire League titles. During the late 1960s, Hyde became known as the Tigers when they joined the Northern Premier League. Despite initial expectations of struggle, they finished seventh and eleventh in their first two seasons. Financial constraints led them to return to the Cheshire League in 1970. After a decade, Hyde resurfaced as a competitive force, winning the Cheshire League in 1981-82 and gaining promotion back to the Northern Premier League. They reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1983 and made it to the FA Trophy semi-finals in 1989. In 1986, Hyde sold Ewen Fields and laid a synthetic Baspograss pitch. They achieved success, winning trophies, and returning to the first round of the FA Cup in 1994. However, as the 21st century arrived, Hyde began to struggle, experiencing back-to-back relegations. In 2010, Hyde struck a deal for Manchester City’s elite development squad to use Ewen Fields, securing financial stability. The decision to revert to the name Hyde FC and change the team colors divided fans. Under Gary Lowe’s management, Hyde amazed everyone by winning the Conference North in 2011-12 and securing promotion. Despite their initial success, Hyde couldn’t sustain their performance and suffered relegations, ultimately returning to the Northern Premier League. In 2015, they returned to the name Hyde United and planned to become a supporters’ trust. The 2016/17 season started poorly, but significant signings in late December turned their fortunes around, and they finished 10th in the table. The 2017/18 season was one of the best in recent years, with Hyde gaining automatic promotion to the EvoStik Premier Division. The 2019/20 season began with a new manager and showed promise before being null and voided due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the gap between seasons, the club refurbished the ground and made additions to the squad. Last season, was a positive one for the club after finishing just outside the play-offs, after finishing 17th & 10th in the last two seasons, respectively. Pass Morrisons store on your left and at the first set of lights turn right onto Lumn Road. At the top of the road there is a T-junction where you turn left onto Walker Lane. The ground entrance is just past Hyde Leisure Pool. A residents-only parking scheme operates in the vicinity of the ground, so street parking has to be away from the stadium. By Bus: The nearest bus service to the ground is the 201, which runs from Manchester City Centre. By Train: The nearest railway station is Newton for Hyde, which is around half a mile away from the ground. It is served by regular trains from Manchester Piccadilly. The FA have given notice today, that Bury FC will compete in both the FA Cup & FA Vase during the 2023/24 season. As a two-time FA Cup winning club in 1900 & 1903, we will enter the competition at the Extra Preliminary Round stage on Saturday 5th August. The draw for which will be announced next Friday (7th July). The FA Vase is the competition played between all the teams at Step 5 and Step 6 of the National League System. Ticket sales for the first sightings of Bury at Gigg Lane on the 8th and 9th July, against Bradford City and Preston North End respectively, have gone well. This has allowed us to prepare in advance and discuss our requirements with the various agencies concerned with supporter safety. As there is currently building work going on in the North (Main) Stand this will be closed other than for players and match officials for the friendly games, with work due to be complete for the start of the league season. We will open the South and East (Cemetery End) Stands for friendlies and cap attendance levels at 2,275. With this in mind, we have agreed that the Bradford and Preston games will be advance ticket-only games. There is still good ticket availability for Preston but for the Bradford game, we have only a small number of tickets left available and expect both home and away allocation to reach their maximum in advance of the game. Please do not attend these games without a ticket which can be purchased here. We have now limited these to single-match tickets and removed the ticket covering both games.
