Reaction: Tim Lees Post AFC Liverpool (A)
After two goals in either half from DJ Pedro against AFC Liverpool this afternoon, Tim Lees reflected on the game. “A turbulent week, turbulent few days with everything that’s gone on. Our job as staff and as players is just to focus on the pitch and that started on Thursday with us, so there was no talk of anything outside of the club. It was purely football, how we’re going to get better, how we’re going to keep improving and I thought the lads were excellent, particularly first half. We’ve been working a lot on the defensive side, so how we press the game, how we’re organised and that’s one goal we conceded now in five games in a league, so another clean sheet, another 2-0, really pleased with it.” Tim then further expanded on how important getting clean sheets and praised goalkeeper Mitch Allen for it. Tim Lees: “Mitch is outstanding. We’ve known for a while that, in our opinion, Mitch is probably the best keeper, certainly in this league and the league above as well. Yeah, it’s come from the lads’ hard work on the training pitch and when we get more time on the training pitch, we’ll get better. So, when we can get down to one game a week, which we’re not far off now, I think that’s when you really see the best of this group. Collectively, individually, there’s so much improvement. The average age is just over 23 in the squad.” Further adding “I think last time we looked we had 10 out of the 20 who were 23 or under. So that shows to us how much this group can improve once we can get the time of them. Recently we’ve started getting some sessions in where we can really work on that defensive side. We know how much quality we’ve got in possession and the patterns in which we work. We’ve got the ultimate belief with the ball that we can take teams apart. But I think to win a league, you’ve got to be able to keep consistent, clean sheets. So that’s what we’ve been focusing on recently. I think it’s not just the backline for us, it’s how the front four press, how are the areas where they shell them. It’s the understanding of the two pivots in front, what they do, and then obviously it’s the box defending with the backline. So, it’s the whole team. I think defensively we’ve seen a massive improvement in the last four or five games. I’m pretty sure it’s four out of five games now, kept a clean sheet and conceded one goal in that time. So, the group are really improving and that’s the area we needed to get better. We’re going to really push and win this league.” Tim then spoke about today’s starting eleven with Ruben Jerome returning to the side from injury and Connor Pye playing slightly further forward. “I think because we’ve got depth in the squad, a part of the recruitment was we wanted lads who could play in different positions and could fill in and you wouldn’t have a drop in terms of the quality. That’s the biggest thing we learned from the league last year. We’ve got lads who can contribute in different areas. We’ve got a certain way of playing that the idea is they can play in these different areas, and they know exactly what’s required from them. Connor did great play further forward. He’s done that before when he was younger as well. In terms of Ruben, he’s been pushing. He’s had an injury that we didn’t want to push too early. The last time he played 90 minutes was the Radcliffe game, which feels like so long ago now. Great to have him back.” Tim then spoke on DJ Pedro performance after the striker scored another 2 goals to extend his scoring run to 4 in 4 games. “I think you can see in him the raw attributes he’s got, which is the work rate, the desire, the tracking back. That’s what you can’t really teach people when he’s got it in abundance. His athleticism, his change of direction, his power. It’d be horrible to play against for opposition. His performances have been excellent since he’s come in. He holds the ball up for us well. He makes forward runs. He adds what we call verticality to the game. When he was playing the 10 today, everything’s not to feet. He runs off, and he runs off Ruben. Really pleased that he’s getting the goals. He’s scored in every game he’s played. He’s technical, and we’re hoping with the time we have, we can do that, when I say technical, in terms of his clean striking and his finishing. He’s another one that when we get down to two sessions a week, he’ll really kick on.” Tim than spoke on Tuesday’s game against Charnock Richard. Tim Lees: “I think it’ll be a different game. I think when it was 11 v 11, before the sending off, it was a good game, it was close. I think we were starting to get control of it, but their physical side, we know them very well. They caused us problems last year. You know when you play Charnock exactly what you’re going to get. One of the toughest games that you’ll have, I think, Charnock. But the idea from our point of view, even though we’ve not got a session in between, is more of what we’re doing. We’re playing really, really well with the ball.” Further adding “I’m not necessarily saying it’s going to be Tuesday, but I think with the chances that we’re having, in terms of the number, there’s going to be a team that we’re going to put several goals past in one game at some point soon. So yeah, we’re going to have to be tight defence. We’ve got to have the same organisation against Charnock and yeah, we’re going to every game. At the moment, we’re confident in every single game.” Tim than finished the interview praising the fans for their continued support. “Yeah, they’re the best. When you come to Bury, they’re the first thing that you sell to every player when you’re trying to recruit them. It’s the fans. They’re unbelievable. They come out every single week. Like we always say, the away games feel like home games. I think in terms of the stuff that’s going off off the field at the minute, it’s so important that they stick together and that everybody’s positive. I think obviously our job on the field is to make sure we give them something to be positive about.” View the full article

Match Info: Charnock Richard (A), Tue 12th Nov, 7:45pm KO
The Shakers go into this game against Charnock Richard lying second in the league. That’s largely thanks to four goals in four games from loanee DJ Pedro – and the fact that the top two were playing in the Isuzu FA Vase at the weekend. We beat Charnock Richard 2-0 on their own ground barely three weeks ago, and this game is the second in a run of three against sides we have faced in the reverse fixture already, with Longridge the visitors to Gigg this Saturday. DJ made his debut four days later when we beat Colne away by the same score. He didn’t score in that match, but has made up for it by scoring four in the next three – the 2-0 home win against Pilkington; the 1-1 home draw with St Helens; and one in each half in our 2-0 weekend victory at AFC Liverpool. He was just what was needed as the Shakers of late have struggled to turn the number of chances created into goals. So the message is…more of the same against the Villagers, please. This is due to be the last league game under lights for 2024, with the under-23s likely to feature heavily next Monday night in the Macron Cup, come on down and make a noise. Come on you Shakers!!! You can relive all the action from Saturday and hear post match reaction from Tim Lees and Gaz Peet below. In Opposition – Charnock Richard Charnock Richard lost 3-1 away to North Shields in their weekend Isuzu FA Vase match, following a 3-1 home win against Barnoldswick Town in the league last Tuesday. They’re currently 13th in the table – two places lower than when we beat them at Mossie Park three weeks ago. They’ve won just nine of their 23 matches and lost the same number. The Villagers won promotion to the Premier Division in 2017, just a year after joining the NWCFL. Message from Dave McNabb
Dave McNabb has released the following message to supporters: Good evening Shakers, I know it’s been a turbulent time over the last couple of days with the events that have unfolded but I wanted to reach out to you all and ask that we all continue to focus on the football, keep driving the team on and try to remain positive. I’d like to place on record my thanks to Phil and Marcel who brought me into the club. The pair have worked tirelessly in the background and have been a driving force in getting us to where we are today. As we enter a transition period for the club there will be lots of opinions and thoughts about how we move forward, we must support the board behind the scenes to navigate us though this challenging time and trust the upcoming electoral process will deliver us the right people and structure to continue to propel the club forward. In the meantime, let’s all do our bit to ensure we achieve our goals and objectives on the pitch this year. Whether that is picking the team, coaching the team, playing staff, volunteers or fans, we all have our roles to play to ensure this season is a success. We have had a very positive start and we couldn’t have achieved what we have so far without you, the fans. The team now needs you more than ever, in your numbers and as loud and proud as ever. See you tomorrow, Dave View the full article

Board Statement: Resignations Confirmed
The club has today received the resignations of both Phil Young (FSSB Chair) and Marcel De Matas (FSSB Board Member & Football Chair). Phil will not stand for re-election in the upcoming Football Supporters Society of Bury (FSSB) elections and will depart the club after over four years as chair, of first Shakers Community, and then FSSB from 2023. In his time, the club has evolved from the very bottom of the football pyramid and he was the driving force behind the financial sustainability and reporting that is in place today. He led the club’s commitment to the merger process, working with the stakeholders securing the ground which enabled the return to Gigg Lane last year. Most recently, his work to secure over £750,000 funding has transformed the stadium into the new era, with the installation of the 3G pitch over the summer of 2024 and soon to be installed LED floodlighting. He leaves with the club in a healthy financial position to move onto the next stage. Marcel has indicated he will be standing down with immediate effect from both his role on the FSSB board, which he was duly elected upon in 2023, and as Chair of the Football Club. As football chair, a role which he began in 2021, Marcel has led diligently on football-related matters, covering various roles that make the operations side of the club tick. From chairing the football board meetings, all the way through the club to liaising with and assisting managing the large group of matchday volunteers. Marcel has always been on hand to offer support and guidance to supporters and his optimistic energy will be missed from the day-to-day running of the club. We wish to place on record our thanks to both for their commitment to the cause and playing a pivotal role in the re-emergence of Bury Football Club following the events of 2019. The FSSB board will take time to reflect on these decisions in the coming days before looking to make the decisions around the next steps for the club. View the full article

Club Statement: Volunteer Roles
We wish to provide an update and inform all supporters following a review of volunteering practices within the club this week. Firstly, and understandably, the club has received a lot of feedback from supporters about the role of one of our volunteers John Raftery on Wednesday. We have been in regular contact with John since Wednesday, both offering apologies for the upset caused and working on the solution to move forward. A conversation was had between a member of the board and CEO Neil Sears regarding John’s role. This led to confusion, miscommunication and caused unnecessary stress on a volunteer. We greatly regret this action. In line with current structure at the club, Football Chair Marcel De Matas has taken responsibility in trying to bring about a resolution to this unfortunate situation. We can confirm that John Raftery is welcome to continue in his current role as a volunteer, both during the week at Gigg Lane and on our hospitality reception on matchdays. John will come back to us on this, once he has had chance to consider the offer. What happened on Wednesday was a mistake, and a function of poor communication and decision making within the club. It was the result of too much pressure, too little time and not enough clarity on who should be deciding what. We will do more to ensure this does not happen again. Secondly, as part of this work and where some of the confusion on this issue has stemmed from, we are in the process of reviewing all of our volunteer roles. Our primary concern is always safety and security in the stadium. There are occasions where we have staff and volunteers going beyond what we expect of them, and this enthusiasm can sometimes cause problems. We are trying to find a balance, but on occasions we need to reduce the responsibilities people take on for the good of the club or those individuals. This will sometimes cause frustration but it is always done with the right intent. We do not want, for example, volunteers engaging with people who have become aggressive or threatening. We would prefer them not to do this online but have no control over social media. We certainly do not want people to do this in person. We want to provide more clarity on what is expected and will work on this over the forthcoming weeks. Equally, we have had incidents where staff have been threatened or abused by supporters. Supporters will always have opinions and criticism is part of any job in football. There is a line that should not be crossed however, and we will continue to take action where that happens. We welcome supporters working with the club to achieve an environment which helps it prosper and thank all for their patience whilst we have dealt with any club matters both privately, and as promptly as possible. Match Info: AFC Liverpool (A), Sat 9th Nov, 1pm KO
Hopes were high for a match against St Helens that could have sent the Shakers like a rocket into second position in the league. But, despite the impressive fireworks display in the air around Gigg Lane and plenty of cracking chances for both sides going begging, the Bonfire Night game ended with honours even. Nevertheless, the 1-1 scoreline in a tough game against resolute opponents stretches our unbeaten record to 18 and moves us up into third place. Highlights and post match media is available below. Next up: AFC Liverpool. We’re still the ‘Mighty Shakers’ and on the back of three away wins on the trot, so we head for Merseyside with momentum on the road. We hope there are still many Shakers fans still able to reach Crosby for the now earlier kick-off at 1pm this Saturday. We will be hoping to follow up a 2-0 victory against AFC Liverpool at home in August to complete the double for a second successive season. But it will be anything but easy. So come on you Shakers fans, let’s shake off the disappointment of Bonfire Night and have lots of noise as we get behind our lads at the Marine Travel Arena in Crosby. Get all your match information below. In Opposition – AFC Liverpool AFC Liverpool has been having a solid season so far in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division. After 21 games, they’ve won 12, drawn once, and lost eight. Sitting 7th in the league, they’ve scored 50 goals but have let in 46, so they’ve seen their fair share of action at both ends of the pitch. Their recent form is a bit of a mixed bag – three wins and three losses in their last six games. Most recently, they pulled off an exciting 4-3 away win against West Didsbury & Chorlton, showing they’ve got plenty of fight. With Phil Stafford at the helm, they’re looking to keep climbing the league ladder and make a strong finish to the season and jump into the play-offs come April.
