CEO Neil Sears has made the following response following Saturday’s play-off final Big Screen event at Gigg Lane: We have now had a couple of days digest the result of Saturday, and we have seen the many comments posted around the live stream broadcast on the Big Screen Gigg Lane on Saturday. I think its important that we as a club provide some background and add some context around getting the event on. After our victory in Tuesday’s semi-final, it soon became apparent that many fans would be unable to get a ticket for the game on Saturday. We didn’t want supporters to miss out and after seeing many suggestions calling for the club to do something, we decided to look into hiring a big screen to show the event at Gigg Lane. This was not easy with only 48 hours notice and was organised at the same time as arranging a ballot for tickets. In order to execute this, we had a number of things to consider: Our security for any such event, catering options, liaising with the police and also getting the opposition’s permission to stream. We also needed to consider the size of the screen and also how many fans could realistically attend and see such a screen. As many of you will know, we don’t normally stream away matches, but due to the enormity of the game we decided to try. We hired the biggest screen that we could source within the timescales we were working within. Research indicated that a strong 4G data signal was available in the area of Ericstan Park, but we made a calculated gamble that it was worth the risk. If we hadn’t had done this, supporters would rightly have asked why we had not tried to do something. However, on arrival at the ground, the signal whilst strong for downloading, was relatively poor for uploading data. This aspect is necessary for broadcasting a live stream, and on this occasion the systems did not have the capability to operate at the level the team requierd. We were aware that the steam kept buffering as a result, and this must have been very frustrating. Whilst the team attempted reducing the quality of the picture to keep the stream live and consistent, this was only so successful and resulted in large parts of the game being unwatchable. The team, both at the game in Wythenshawe and back at Gigg Lane, did all they could in trying circumstances. As a club when we put this event on, we were not doing it to make money. This event was delivered to be ‘cost neutral’ to ensure that the supporters could watch the game, so we are as disappointed as you when we ran into problems. However, by all account the atmosphere was fantastic and the food and drink seemed to go down well, we also ensured that the players came back to thank you for the support you gave them for the season. We thank you for supporting and interacting with this event, and drawing from this experience will enable us to hold more events like this in future. We also thank those dedicated volunteers who again gave up their time to help make the event run smoothly, in some cases foregoing an actual ticket for the game to make this happen. We literally would not be able to get these events on for supporters without this assistance – a big thank you! We have postponed the next CEO Q&A session until ahead of the new season in July, as there is a lot to get through in the next few weeks to prepare for this. Bury Football Club wishes to condemn some of the supporter behaviour at our Play-Off Final at Ericstan Park on Saturday afternoon. We are a community club, and some of the scenes experienced in both the stands and again unfortunately on the pitch, are not acceptable. It cannot be stressed enough that any poor behaviour reflects on the club in a negative way and has led to severe punishment already during the season. We have received the following note from Wythenshawe Town ahead of today’s play off final at Ericstan Park. “Can all Bury fans enter the ground via the Altrincham Road turnstile. We obviously are aware Bury fans have purchased tickets in Wythenshawe end and we have no problem them entering through the same entrance and enjoying the day with their own supporters. We have allocated the North side of the ground for your supporters and have allowed ample space for fans who have purchased tickets direct from Wythenshawe. Extra security will be on duty to keep all supporters safe. Wythenshawe Town representatives will be on hand throughout the day to help with any queries. We have extra toilets, food outlets and outside bars for Bury supporters. Please can you make sure all supporters are aware that no back packs will be allowed in ground, handbags are ok as are plastic bags if any fans want to bring their own food in. No cans, glass bottles or alcohol will be permitted to be brought into the ground. Bag searches will take place by licensed security. Soft drink bottles tops will be taken off on entry to the stadium. Outside bars will be be strictly cash only strictly no card payments. Goes without saying we have a strictly no pyrotechnic policy and abuse of any form will not be tolerated in the ground. Any supporter found breaching these rules will be reported to the police. We ask all supporters from both teams to stay off the pitch. We have local grassroots cup finals coming up and as a club we rely on this income. It was elation for Shakers fans at Gigg Lane on Tuesday evening as we beat a strong Charnock side and booked our place, courtesy of a Tanaka Cherera SCREAMER, in the North West Counties Premier Division Play Off Final for an encounter that will see us take on Wythenshawe Town at their Ericstan Park Ground. The Shakers have been given an allocation of 350 tickets for this crunch game so we need all those that are lucky enough in the ballot to get hold of a ticket to get behind the lads from kick off until the final whistle and hopefully push the boys onto promotion to the Northern Premier League. The upcoming final has all the makings of a goal fest with there being plenty of goals in both of the previous encounters. Earlier this season Bury won 4-0 at Gigg Lane and 3-2 in the reverse fixture at Ericstan Park. We must reinforce the message that fans without a ticket should not travel to or attempt to gain entry to Ericstan Park under any circumstances. We have also been made aware of potential scam tickets available online, please only purchase a ticket if successful in the ballot. The action won’t only be taking place in Wythenshawe with a large screen being erected on the pitch at Gigg Lane as we welcome Shakers fans to watch the game together in the South Stand, this has now sold out – please don’t travel to Gigg Lane for the screening without a ticket. In Opposition – Wythenshawe Town Early Days: The club was founded in 1946 as the North Withington Amateur Football Club and was the idea of some young men who attended St. Crispin’s Church on Hart Road in Fallowfield. The club first played in the South Manchester & Wythenshawe League (1946 – 1958) and were subsequently transferred to the Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur league (1958 – 1972). Manchester League & Timpson Road: It was in 1972 the club applied and were accepted into the Manchester League, when up until 1974 all games of football were played at Hough End Field, Princess Road, Withington. In June 1974, under the helm of Chairman Billy Moore, the club’s headquarters were moved from the Princess Hotel in Withington to the newly acquired ground at Timpson Road, Baguley, M23 9LL where three pre-fabricated houses were purchased and turned into a clubhouse with a bar, kitchen and changing facilities. After numerous discussions, it was decided to name the ground after the residing Chairman (Stan Hahn) and the Club Secretary (Eric Renard) out of respect, honouring them as founding members, hence the name Ericstan Park. And it was at this point, the club decided to design a new badge incorporating a cockerel and a fox; the cockerel related to founding member Stanley Hahn (the German for cockerel is Hähnchen) and the fox to founding member Eric Renard (the French for fox is Renard), to forever recognise the club’s founding members. Cheshire League & The Invincibles: In 2014 and under new Chairman Kenny Hope, the club transferred to the Cheshire League Division 2 and went on to become history-makers, making national headlines as they won every single league and Cup game, 39 games in total, earning the side the title, ‘The Invincibles.’ Back to back promotions on their debut in the Cheshire League, and with a working partnership in place with professional football club Fleetwood Town, the club set their sights firmly on bringing semi-professional football to the club for the first time in history. The North-West Counties Football League & Semi-Pro Football: That ambition came to realisation at the end of the 2017/18 season after two seasons in the Cheshire Premier League when the club secured promotion to Step 6 and the Hallmark Security North West Counties League South Division, heralding a new era at the club. There were further changes at the beginning of 2019 when Chris Eaton took over as Chairman with a promise to put the club on a sound business footing. Promotion was narrowly missed at the end of the season but with Manager James Kinsey and his coaching team in charge, the club looked forward to the new campaign with optimism. The optimism proved well-founded as the club showed its confidence in the players and management team was justified with some remarkable highlights and a run in the league that left them in third place and looking forward to a future in the next level. Their greatest run of success was in the FA Vase where a series of victories against Goole Town, Nostell Miners Welfare, Skelmersdale United, and Northwich Victoria saw them matched against competition favourites big-spending Consett Town. A draw at home saw Wythenshawe visit the North-East for the replay but the FA’s experimental rule-change for the competition saw the team short of six players while their opponents had a full squad to choose from. Even so it was a narrow one-nil defeat that saw their visions of Wembley come to an end. The highlight of the season was a remarkable two-one away victory over high flying National League North stars Curzon Ashton in the Frank Hannah Manchester Senior Cup and their last game before the season was ended by COVID-19 was in the semi-final of the Division One Cup against Sandbach United. The decision to declare the season null and void robbed the club of what looked to be a certain promotion. Seven out of Seven and then COVID: Season 2020-21 saw a remarkable start to the campaign with seven straight wins and 29 goals scored against just 3 in return. Once again, the season was ended by COVID, and it looked as if once again frustration was the order of the day. However, the club got the news it so richly deserved when the FA made the decision to base promotion on the records of the two curtailed seasons and Wythenshawe Town found themselves starting the new campaign in the Premier Division. There was progress off the field as well at the beginning of 2021, when Chairman Chris Eaton, with the unanimous backing of the members, turned the club into a limited company with a promise of great things to come. Success and Reward: The 2021-22 season proved to be an outstanding campaign with a run in the FA Vase and a close finish in the League. Victories against Litherland REMYCA, Bacup Borough, Seaham Red Star, Holker OB, Billingham Synthonia, red-hot favourites Consett AFC and Anstey Nomads saw them reach the dizzy heights of an FA Vase Quarter Final at Loughborough Students. However, it proved one hurdle too far and the visions of Wembley were dashed. After the first few weeks Town were never out of the top three places in the league and it went right up to the final day when they were pipped by just a single point. Wythenshawe Town’s achievements didn’t go unrecognised, and they received two great honours at the League Presentation Evening. Manager James Kinsey was rewarded for three years of hard work and dedication when he received the Manager of The Year Award for the Premier Division and the club’s attitude to discipline on the field saw them received the Fair Play Award. The Summer of 2023 saw Manager James Kinsey depart for Stalybridge Celtic and a new regime at Ericstan Park was announced with the appointment of Rory Fallon and his Management Team. Travel by public bus: For all buses, the best stop to get off at is on Altrincham Road near Tesco Baguley. The ground is around 3-5 minutes walk from there. From Cheadle, Gatley & Stockport and in the opposite direction, Timperley and Altrincham, take the 11 or 11a and get off anywhere near Tesco Baguley or Baguley Retail Park. If you’re travelling from anywhere in Wythenshawe, the 11 or 109 is the easiest bus to get. If you are travelling from Manchester City Centre take the 109. Driving: From the M56 Junction 3, follow the sign for Wythenshawe Hospital. After 1 mile, after passing the Shell garage, turn left at the traffic lights then right at the next set of traffic lights. The ground is at the end of this road. From the M60 (Counterclockwise), come off at Junction 5 and join the M56. Come off at the first exit which is Junction 3 and follow signs as above. From the M60 (Clockwise), head towards the M56 at Junction 4 and come off at the first exit, Junction 2 towards Wythenshawe. At the roundabout go straight ahead towards Altrincham, and at the second roundabout take the second exit, again towards Altrincham. This will bring you to M56 Junction 3, go straight ahead at the roundabout and follow the directions above. Unfortunately, due to the change in circumstances of accommodating the Big Screen event at Gigg Lane this weekend for the Play-Off Final screening, the club have had to make the tough decision to postpone the Awards Day this coming Sunday. The event preparations have been underway for some time and we are very sad to have to make this decision at such short notice. However, the logistics of putting on a large additional event this Saturday, has diverted resource which would have knock-on effects for the following day. We have been given permission to Live Stream this Saturday’s Play-Off Final from Ericstan Park and this will be broadcast inside Gigg Lane, via a large 22sq metre screen positioned on the pitch. It includes a built in sound system. We can accommodate 1,100 people in the South Stand for this event, with tickets priced at £6 adults and £2 U16s. We head to Ericstan Park this weekend to take on Wythenshawe Town in the Play-Off Final of the NWCFL Premier Division. The winner takes their place in the Northern Premier League next season. Capacity is limited to 1,400, with only a small number of these tickets being made available to Bury supporters as we are receiving the minimum away allocation allowed. The ballot will give preference to those who hold both a society membership and season ticket, so we are asking for you to claim the ballot ticket using the email address used for your membership and also enter information about your season ticket. It is one entry per person. Should we not receive enough ballots from that group we will move to the next on the priority list, but this is unlikely to happen. If anything changes and we receive more tickets we will work through the list and advise the next people drawn out of the ballot that they can get a ticket. To be included in the ballot for a ticket to this game, please enter your details for a free ticket here before Thursday 2nd May at 6pm. Those putting their name in this ballot will need to be able to travel to Gigg Lane on Friday 3rd May between either 10am-2pm or 4-7pm to pick up their ticket. To claim it you must bring proof of ID and your season ticket (either card or on your phone), plus card or cash for payment on collection. Supporters will receive physical tickets and the ballot tickets are not valid for entry. We are yet to be advised of the ticket prices. We will use a digital balloting system to randomly select the numbers. The ballot will be drawn on Thursday evening, with the lucky ticket holders being informed afterwards. The play-offs it is, and after a long wait, it is Charnock Richard we face on Tuesday night for a place in Saturday’s final against either Wythenshawe Town or Padiham. With over 3,500 tickets gone and the South Stand almost sold out, it is going to be a cracker under the mid-Spring lights at Gigg Lane. Get on down to cheer the lads on, you can be the difference. It has been a long old wait since our game at Ramsbottom on the final game of the season, however tonight’s visitors have fitted in an extra four games in seven days, winning all four and seizing a place in the end of season showdown in the process. No doubt the Greens will be heading to Gigg Lane full of confidence, on the back of a good run and having been undefeated against the Shakers in all four encounters this season so far. The last game was in a completely different setting however, with Charnock visiting an empty Gigg Lane and left with a 2-2 draw as we saw out the second game of a two-game stadium ban. But we can expect a fiery atmosphere, as manager Dave McNabb is looking for a fast start and explaining that the lads go into the game in good spirits in his pre-match video which can be found below. In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, we go straight to penalties this evening! We have all four-sides of the ground open for the first time since 2019 for this clash, with no availability in the Main Stand, and South Stand set to be ticket only. Pre-Match Interview – Dave McNabb In Opposition – Charnock Richard In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. Charnock progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season and won promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCL in the first season when finishing runners up in Division 1. In the 21-22 season the club won the North West Counties League, League Challenge Cup. Last season, Charnock finished 11th in NWCFL Premier Division, making the play-offs this season with six straight wins, scoring 18 and conceding only two. Starkies bar Starkies: For those with tickets in the Main Stand, access to Starkies will be available from when the gates open. The bar is limited to a set number and this will be managed by stewards through the day. After the game, supporters from other areas of the ground can gain access to Starkies via the ground floor entrance in that corner of the ground – subject to the maximum capacity not being exceeded. Keep #GiggGleaming: With so much work gone into Gigg Lane to get us to this point, we want to keep it that way and a lot of work goes into turning the ground around between games each weekend. We have a team of volunteers lined up to clean the stands following the game. With this in mind, we urge all supporters to make sure any rubbish is processed in the correct manner, using the available bins where necessary, or if possible please take any rubbish away with you. Designated Smoking Areas: Supporters are not allowed to smoke / vape anywhere within the stands at Gigg Lane. Designated areas are set aside to do this, follow guidance from stewards on this and only smoke / vape within these areas. #NonLeagueDogs: For now, dogs are NOT permitted in the ground. It’s been a long hard season for all concerned at Bury Football Club and at the time of writing, we have two critical games remaining before the end of the 2023/24 season. However, regardless of the outcome of the promotion play-offs, it is essential that we celebrate the successes of all of our teams within the Bury Football Club family as we complete our first season back at Gigg Lane. Bury FC in the Isle Of Man In this regard, we would like to invite all of our supporters to join us on Sunday 5th May at Gigg Lane to be part of our end of season celebrations, where we plan to recognise the efforts and achievements of all of our teams. The gates open at 12 noon, with the awards being given out from 1pm. Women’s First Team This event will include the men’s first team, women’s first team, men’s U23s, women’s development, women’s reserves and our junior team (U12s). Bury FC Under 12’s Entry is through the Cemetery End turnstiles by pre-purchased ticket only, there being no pay on the day entry. Tickets are priced at £3 for adults, with children under 16 entering for free with a paying adult. Men’s U23s Part of the afternoon’s entertainment will include live music by “The Giggers” band. Food will be available from Owen’s Grill with the kiosks being open for refreshments including alcoholic beverages. Ahead of Gigg Lane’s biggest fixture for five years, we are delighted to be able to confirm that the Manchester Road End will be also be open for the first time since 2019. Works to the Main Stand and documentation around spectator safety will require further review, and despite the best endeavours, this now cannot take place until after next week’s game. Keen to maximse the number of seats Gigg Lane has to offer for the Play-off Semi-Final, the stadium team in recent weeks were able to turnaround the required improvements in the Manchester Road End and after a thorough clean, it is ready to go and has been given the all-clear from the visiting safety officer this week. The opening of the Manchester Road End does provide the club with the ability to increase the overall stadium capacity to 8,724. Now comes the task of filling it, and this comes down to you! With over 2,000 pre-sale tickets already sold, tickets for the Cemetery End will become available shortly. Tickets for away supporters in the Manchester Road End will become available later on Saturday, once our opponents are confirmed. Details on the ability to provide pay-on-the-gate turnstiles will be made closer to the game and subject to a review on tickets sold ahead of the game. The North West Counties Football League have released updated dates for the playoffs following Charnock Richard’s continuing progress in the playoff hunt. These are now: Play-off Semi-Finals 2nd v 5th and 3rd v 4th, Tuesday 30th April Play-off Final Winners of each Semi-Final, Saturday 4th May Ties are to be played at the home venue of the higher ranking side. As it stands, we are due to take on Padiham at Gigg Lane in our play-off semi final. Should Charnock proceed to win both tomorrow night at Colne and against Pilkington on Saturday, we will take on the Greens at Gigg Lane and Padiham will take on Wythenshawe Town. Kendal Town would fall out of the play-off picture in this case. Ahead of the works to lay the 3G pitch this summer, a commemoration service will be held in honour of fans of the past, who’s ashes are present at Gigg Lane. All are welcome to pay their respects, with the service taking place from 3pm, lead by the Rector of Bury Parish Church. We will also be joined by soloist, Sean Ruane from Rawtenstall (pictured left at Trent Bridge) who adds Gigg Lane to his many performance venues, which includes following England’s sporting sides around the world. The choir will be directed by Dan McDwyer, drawing singers from the Greater Manchester area for this special event.
