  1. After Saturday’s disappointment in the FA Cup, league action returns to Gigg Lane on Tuesday night as Kendal Town are the visitors for our first competitive game under the lights. Charnock Richard were the victors at the weekend. Goals from Connor Comber and Jack Tinning gave Bury a two-nil lead, scoring at the beginning of each half. Injuries to both centre-backs, Niall Battersby and Jack Tinning, early in the second-half led to a defensive re-shuffle before Greens top-scorer Jordan Darr scored just before the hour mark to peg a goal back for the hosts. Luke Power slammed home a second with eight minutes remaining, and with the tie looking to be heading to a replay, the aforementioned Power slotted home the winner with a back-post header in the fifth minute of added time to send Charnock into today’s draw. We caught up with gaffer, Andy Welsh after a disappointing afternoon at Mossie Park – watch below: Onto Tuesday night, the visiting Mintcakes have started the season like a train after finishing their first year back down in the Counties in 12th last season. The only blot on the card in the league so far was an amazing 4-4 draw at Barnoldswick last week, with Town leading both 3-0 and 4-1 before being pegged back by a remarkable second half effort from Barlick. Other than that, it has been a clean sweep of league wins for the Cumbria-based outfit, dispatching AFC Liverpool, Longridge, Padiham, Litherland and lately against Pilkington on Saturday. They sit top going into the game, and who doesn’t love an early-season top-of-the-table clash? Get on down to Gigg Lane this week and experience a night under the Gigg Lane lights. Full information available below. In Opposition – Kendal Town The present Club was originally formed as Netherfield AFC in 1919 when employees at K Shoes Netherfield factory were encouraged to form a football team. They were provided with land near the factory at Parkside and began to compete in local leagues. In 1925 the team achieved its first notable success winning the Westmorland County Cup. The club then played in the local leagues like the North Lancashire and West Lancashire league before the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1945 the club joined the semi-professional ranks becoming a member of the Lancashire Combination League. Two Championship Titles came their way in 1949 and 1965. FA Cup success was quickly becoming a tradition having five appearances in eight years in the 1st Round of the FA Cup with the club’s best run in 1963/64 reaching the 2nd Round against Football League side Chesterfield. In 1968 the club accepted the challenge of becoming a founder member of the Northern Premier League. However, the 1970s were not kind to Netherfield as they languished around the bottom of the Northern Premier League for most of the decade. The Club moved in the North West Counties Division One for four seasons before returning to the Northern Premier League in 1987 for the next 10 years the club’s highest position was fifth in the 1993/94 season. The club changed its name to Netherfield Kendal in 1998 and changed its name to Kendal Town in 2000. In the 2004/05 season, the club lost in the NPL Division One play-off final against AFC Telford. The season after was one of the most successful in the club’s history beating Gresley Rovers in the playoff final and the first ever promotion in the club’s history to the NPL Premier. The club’s best two seasons in the NPL Premier where they secured two playoff places losing both semi-finals each time. In the 2012/13 season the club where relegated back to the NPL Division 1. For the next 10 seasons, the club’s average position was 16th. In that time the club could only manage its highest position of 10th in the 2013/14 season. The 2021/22 season was one of the worst in the club’s history. The club finished on 12 points and finished 19th and were relegated to the North West Counties Premier. 2022-23 saw the club return to the North West Counties league for the first time in over 30 years, the season was a season for the club to Stabilize finishing 12th, the highlight was taking over 100 fans to the Isle of Man and also reaching the Macron Cup semi-final. 3. Our Women’s first team get their competitive season underway on Wednesday evening, with the visit of Salford City to Unsworth Cricket Club. Jason Jarrett’s side have had a positive pre-season campaign, with a good set of performances against a range of opposition. 16 players have been retained from the previous management team last season, whilst new signings have included Mia Holden, Shellby Wolstencroft & Beth Powney. In Opposition – Salford City The team was formed in the summer of 2018 and started life in the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League, the seventh tier of the women’s pyramid, winning the treble along the way. The league title was secured with an unbeaten campaign, as well as the GMWFL League Cup and the Division 1 Cup. Unfortunately, the only defeat of the season came in the last game, the Final of the Manchester FA Women’s Challenge Cup, when FC United of Manchester triumphed 4-0. In the 2019/20 season, they gained their second promotion in two years, to the North West Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division, the division they currently play in. Last season, the team finished 2nd place falling just eight points behind league leaders, FC United of Manchester, losing three games all season. In their opening game of the season on Sunday, they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Darwen. On the Day & In the Ground Admission: It will be free to attend this fixture. 4. Our FA Cup journey continues as head over to Charnock Richard this weekend for the first preliminary round tie at Mossie Park. We overcame Uttoxeter Town in the last round, with a 4-1 win at Gigg Lane. Uttoxeter took the lead early in the first half from a deflected effort, before Lowe and Higgins took us into the break with a 2-1 lead. Further goals from Lowe (again) and a late Connor Comber penalty was enough to take us through in front of 2,900 supporters. Catch up with the highlights below: This first round tie was already drawn prior to the extra preliminary round, with either Charnock or Squires Gate awaiting the winners of the Gigg Lane tie. Charnock comprehensively dispatched Gate, smacking seven unanswered second half goals to set up this weekend’s tie. We head back to Charnock in just 10 days time for our league fixture, with the Lancashire-based side sat in 7th and remain unbeaten so far with two wins and three draws from the opening five games. Last time out, they took the honours in the local derby at Burscough with a 2-0 win. All your pre-match information is available below. In Opposition – Charnock Richard In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. Charnock progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season and won promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCL in the first season when finishing runners up in Division 1. In the 21-22 season the club won the North West Counties League, League Challenge Cup. Last season, Charnock finished 11th in NWCFL Premier Division. 10. The process to elect the new board of the Football Supporters’ Society of Bury was opened on the 8th August 2023. Independent election scrutineers Mi-Voice were appointed to run this process. We have been notified by Mi-Voice that on Monday 14th August, information about the FSSB's election relating to specific members was posted online to an anonymous Twitter account. Issues relating to these individuals had already been identified and were being dealt with as part of establishing the electoral roll for the election. The post represents a breach in the process that needs to be investigated further. It also calls into question the integrity of the election and any result that would have been declared. As a consequence, Mi-Voice have temporarily suspended the elections process, pending an internal investigation into how the leak occurred. A further statement will be issued once more information becomes available.
  11. We are pleased to announce Leon Mike and Stephen ‘Sas’ Sheil as joint managers of the newly formed U23 team who will play in the Lancashire Football League West Division this season. Joint Manager – Leon Mike Leon (pictured right), 41, has had a career in football, playing both at professional level and non-league, before moving into coaching. Sas, 42, was a teammate of Leon at Mossley AFC in the mid-2000s and has a proven track record of success managing junior teams and development squads. Together they bring a wealth of experience in local football and were selected from a highly qualified and experienced list of applicants for the position. We are delighted to welcome them to the club as they build a playing squad for the season ahead and the first game next month. Games will be played on weekday evenings (typically kicking off at 7.45pm). Home games will be played at the all-weather facility at the Manchester College (Openshaw Campus) and our preferred evening for home games is Monday. Fixtures are due to begin in early September, with full details available via the FA Full-Time website accessed HERE. Welcome Leon and Sas and we wish you the very best for the coming season with this new team for the club. #ShakersTogether | #BuryFC | #PartofIt View the full article
  12. This past Saturday The Shakers had their first taste of defeat in competitive action since returning to Gigg Lane in a 1-3 defeat to Chadderton. An amazing crowd of 4115 were present and in fine voice as Andy Welsh’s charges went ahead after 25 minutes courtesy of a Darius Palma penalty. Bury defended their lead well, with both sides having chances but neither capitalising until the 86th minute when Chadderton grabbed an equaliser in the form of a wonder strike from their skipper Jordan Schofield. Goals from Kgwakgwa and Knight came deep into injury time as Bury pushed men forward to try and restore their lead sealing the win for the visitors. Following the game speaking to match reporter Adam Clark, Andy Welsh said, “We can never be sore losers and well done to Chadderton for winning the game, as for us as a football club, i’ve said it time and time again that one game isn’t going to define us and it shouldn’t” (interview available below) We now switch our focus to this Tuesday’s trip to the Ruby Civil Arena to face Padiham FC. Tickets are already on sale for this game, and you can grab yours here. Watch the highlights from the weekends game below and please make sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel to help us grow on that platform In Opposition – Padiham FC It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the `Caldersiders` as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire`s soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England. The Padiham Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879, reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 – 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters. Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.`s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall. At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham`s initial decade of success. Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham`s progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues. The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club`s involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915 – 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant until after the end of World War Two when they were reformed. The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the `Arbories` Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1,777 spectators turned up to see the Club`s opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949 – 50 football season. In 1982, Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League, however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons. Padiham returned to the North West Counties Football League for the 2000/2001 season, winning the Premier Division Title in 2012/13 to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League, where they spent two seasons before being relegated back to the North West Counties Football League for the 2015/16 season. Since 1999 the club has spent in the region of £600,000 upgrading their ground. 16. Newly promoted Chadderton are the visitors to Gigg Lane this Saturday, as Andy Welsh’s side look to continue their 100% record in all competitions. Sajjad Elhassan’s penalty was the winning goal in Tuesday’s victory away at Wythenshawe Town. The Shakers were two-nil down at half-time, before two goals from Andy Briggs in the opening ten minutes of the second half brought us level. Lewis Gilboy was felled in the area for Saj’s penalty with around 15 minutes to go, and the calmest man in the ground was able to slot home past experienced goalkeeper Greg Hall. Check out the highlights below and while you are there, make sure you subscribe to never miss out on all the action as the season progresses! In Opposition – Chadderton The club was established in 1946 as Burnley Lane Estate Juniors and initially played in the Middleton Youth League. The following year the club moved to Mill Brow, started an adult team and were renamed Millbrow Football Club. After moving again the club was renamed North Chadderton Amateurs. At the time, the club played in the Oldham Amateur League, winning its Challenge Cup in 1954–55. They moved up to the Manchester Amateur League, winning the North division in 1955–56 and adopting their current name in 1957. At the end of the 1958–59 season Chadderton were promoted to Division One. They were Division One champions in 1962–63, and also started playing in Division Two of the Manchester League. They were runners-up in Division Two in both 1962–63 and 1963–64, before winning the division in 1964–65. However, they were not promoted.[5] The division was renamed Division One in 1966 and Chadderton were champions again in 1966–67, after which they were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1980 Chadderton moved up to the Lancashire Combination. When the league merged with the Cheshire County League in 1982 to form the North West Counties League, Chadderton were founder members of Division Two. A third-place finish in 1988–89 saw them promoted to Division One. However, they finished bottom of Division One the following season and were relegated back to Division Two. Despite only finishing eleventh in 1991–92, the club were promoted to Division One again. They played in Division One until being demoted at the end of the 1997–98 season due to failing ground grading requirements. Division Two was renamed Division One in 2008. 17. The Shakers stand proud at the top of the North West Counties Premier Division, continuing their unbeaten run. However, last season's promotion rivals Wythenshawe Town didn't make it easy for them. Bury emerged victorious with a 3-2 win but faced a daunting two-goal deficit at the break, courtesy of penalties by Luke Nock and Danny Byrnes. In a thrilling match that encapsulated the essence of football, Bury staged a comeback that their fans will cherish. Andy Briggs quickly pulled one back and added a second in the 56th minute. Sajjad Elhassan then capped off the turnaround with a cool penalty in the 77th minute following a foul on Lewis Gilboy. Twelve yellow cards were shown in this hotly contested battle, but remarkably, no players were sent off. Bury's winning streak remains intact, and the excitement for what's next in their campaign continues to build. Keeping An Eye on the Competition Bury's closest rivals, Kendal Town, are keeping the pressure on and could match Bury's 100% record with their next win. The Mintcakes dominated Padiham in a 3-0 victory, leaving their scoring until late in the game. The Cumbrians' defence has been impressive, as they have yet to concede a goal this season. Other Notable Matches Litherland REMYCA clinched a 4-1 win over Squires Gate, with Oliver Nugent and Elliot Taylor playing key roles. Colin McDonald's side now sits in third place. Colne finally secured a league win, defeating Glossop North End 2-1 in a replay of their FA Cup triumph. In a spirited display, Cheadle Town rallied from 2-0 down to snatch a point against Pilkington. Late heroics from Pat Davin and Kyle McGonigle salvaged a draw. Prestwich Heys and Charnock Richard played to a goalless stalemate in the other match of the week. Looking Forward As Bury continues to impress and lead the division, fans will be eager to see if their beloved Shakers can maintain their form in the coming fixtures. With the team showing resilience, flair, and a winning mentality, the season ahead promises to be exciting for everyone connected with Bury Football Club. Stay tuned for all the latest updates, match reports, and exclusive fan content.
